I think Sai was created as a consolation prize for Ino. She fell for him because he fit her type of guy, looking similarly to Sasuke (whom she had always referred to as a "positive love.). Now I wish I could believe she fell for him organically, but it just felt so off. I never read the Shippuden manga, so I don't know if there's more development for them there, but as it sticks to anime canon, I barely saw anything that indicated that Sai felt the same way for her. When Jaskier stepped into the classroom, the noise was incredible. It didn’t get better with the arrival of the teacher, either.

Not that Jaskier had expected any different. It was the last day of school before winter break, and the students were giddy with the prospect of two whole weeks without school. Hell, Jaskier was looking forward to it almost as much, even if he couldn’t let it show without losing all semblance of control.

And his last assessment had rather pointedly mentioned the cacophony of his class as a symptom of inadequate classroom control. Never mind that it was music class, and a lack of noise would have meant that no learning was happening.

Still, he didn’t need another black mark on his record. He slung his usual guitar and picked up a trumpet instead, blowing a sharp, high-pitched blast to override all the noise. The students winced, clapped their hands over their ears, and otherwise finally shut up.

“Good,” Jaskier said brightly. “I know vacation’s almost here, but if we have to make that much noise, let’s at least be melodic about it. Now, the Spring Concert is still several months away, but let’s talk about--”

Someone was knocking on the classroom door. “Hold that thought,” Jaskier said. “Normally I’d say you can talk amongst yourselves, but I’m not sure you can be trusted with that today.” He ducked around his desk to open the door.

Geralt was standing in the hallway, looking weirdly uncertain. Jaskier took a firm grip on his suddenly-pounding heart and managed to sound mostly polite and detached. “Mr. Rivia, what can I do for you?”

Geralt looked over Jaskier’s shoulder at the music class, who hadn’t yet managed to work themselves back up to a dull roar, and jerked his head to indicate that Jaskier should follow him into the hallway. Intrigued, Jaskier followed him, closing the door carefully at his back.

“Did you leave your pack of wolves unattended?” Jaskier asked, widening his eyes in false panic. Well, mostly false. High school students could generally manage to behave for a few unsupervised minutes, but it was the last day before vacation, and all bets were off.

“It’s fine,” Geralt said. “They’re watching a movie and Yenn said she’d look in on them. But I, mm.” He ground to a halt, lips twisting as he searched for words. “Ciri said,” he started, and stopped again.

Cirit was Geralt’s own daughter. School rules forbade her being in Geralt’s class, but she was in a class with both Yennefer and Jaskier. Jaskier immediately started wracking his brain, trying to remember if he’d said anything in front of her that would be embarrassing if passed along to her father, the man that Jaskier had been crushing on for at least the last three years. Nothing came to mind, which was not necessarily comforting. He waited a moment, then gently prompted, “Ciri said?”

Geralt grimaced. “She said you were going to be alone for the holidays.”

Oh, that. Jaskier almost drooped in relief. That wasn’t embarrassing, aside from the certainty -- already common knowledge -- that Jaskier didn’t have a partner to spend it with. “Yeah,” he agreed easily. “My family’s all pretty far from here, and if I’m honest, not really worth the effort.”

“Mm,” Geralt agreed. “She thought-- that is, we thought. That you might like to join us for. Dinner. Or something.”

Something lurched painfully in Jaskier’s midsection. “You don’t have to do that,” he said. “I’ve been alone for a lot of holidays, it’ll be fine.”

“I know I don’t have to,” Geralt said. “But I’ll.” He swallowed, then squared his shoulders. “I’ll miss you. Over the break.”

“You would? I mean, of course you would. I’m a delight!”

Geralt rolled his eyes but said, “Tonight? Six?”

“I’ll bring the wine,” Jaskier promised.

Geralt nodded, then turned to go back to his class. Jaskier stayed in the hall, watching, until he’d turned the corner.

Only then did he realize that the room behind him was suspiciously quiet. He carefully put his hand on the handle and then pushed the door open all at once, knocking several students to the floor who’d been leaning against it with various instruments pressed against it to listen in.

“Ooooooooh, Mr. Pankratz!” cooed one of them, not even bothering to get up off the floor.

Evil Malware

Welcome back to another episode of An Actual Post. As usual, no prior computer science education needed. Today I'm going to talk about the worst of the worst malware. A lot of things has happened since what the general population consider to be viruses; annoying and maybe steals some money or logins. Unfortunately it's nowadays way way way worse than that so prepare for some uncomfortable reading!

Since the dawn of Stuxnet (which I wrote about here), malware has gotten increasingly more real-life, with real-life complications. It could be the Pegasus spyware, that targets political activists in authoritarian regimes, or disruptive infections that put a stop to Copenhagens metro trains for a few hours. But we're merely in the beginning, because in the last few years, some nasty shit has been going down. I'm going to write about two (technically three but I'll group the first two together for obvious reasons) of the worst incidents we've seen today.

BlackEnergy and CrashOverride

This piece of malware has been around since early 2000's, for the intention of creating DDoS attacks (which I wrote about here) from infected computers. It has since then branched out in its usage, particularly into targeting infrastructure environments. Most notable is the 2015 Ukrainian powergrid incident, which occured when the Russian hacking group known as "Sandworm", infected three Ukrainian energy companies, wiping out systems and causing a power outage for over 250 000 households during winter. The attack began with just one infected document being opened in the affected companies. When BlackEnergy infected their systems, it opened up a remote connection to the attackers, making them able to control the entire powergrid opreation from inside Russia, and thereby switching it off.

That was not enough though, as the attackers also implanted another piece of malicious software known as KillDisk, which wiped out many of the ciritical operation systems, as well as cutting off the connection to the UPS units, which are backup generators in case of system outage. To add a cherry on top, BlackEnergy did what it was originally intended to do - DDoS attacks - towards the energy companies call-centers, so that customers were not able to call and ask what was happening.

The Ukrainian powergrid is quite outdated, which made the attack easier, but it was also the saving grace, as they still had manual power-switches (as opposed to purely digital, which were under the attackers control), so power was eventually restored before they had to rebuild all of their digital systems. This is more concerning for countries with modern powergrids, as manual switches have all been replaced by only digital, meaning power restoration could take weeks or months in case of a similar attack.

Besides the energy companies, three other critical Ukrainian infrastructure organisations were hit by BlackEnergy, but did not result in any operational outages.

But it didn't stop there. Just one year later, in December 2016, a similar attack struck Kiev, successfully taking down one-fifth of the countrys electrical power. Like with the BlackEnergy incident, it was quite quickly restored, but there was a far more horrifying infection this time. Named CrashOverride, the malware was much more sophisticated than BlackEnergy, did more things automatically without the need of input from a remote attacker. It was also modular, meaning that functionalities could just be added to it like lego-pieces, adapting it to whatever kind of electrical grid it was entering. This meant that it wouldn't just be able to infect only Ukranian electrical grids, but just about any country's. Furthermore, evidence points to the 2016 CrashOverride infection only being a test-run.

Triton

Last but definitely not least - Triton, the first (known) malware designed to kill.

But before we talk about it, we need to look at what happened in Bhopal, India in 1984 when what has since been considered the worst industrial disaster of all time occured. At the Union Carbide India Limited pesticide plant in December 2nd, one of the gas tanks had a fatal malfunction, creating a massive gas leak of methyl isocyanate, which is extremely toxic. The leak spread to the surrounding city of Bhopal, resulting in almost 600 000 injured people, 40 000 temporary injuries, 4 000 permanent or severe injuries and over 8 000 people died within the first two weeks, with an estimated additional 8 000 deaths following due to injuries in the time after.

This was of course not caused by Triton, but it became the inspiration for the creation of the malware In 2017, a new piece of malware was discovered in Schneider Electrics industrial control system (called Triconex) at a Saudi Arabian petrochemical facility, which unravelled a horrible and complex secret. The infection chain for Triton contains many steps, so let's start with a brief overview of what the Triconex ICS and SIS is. ICS (Industrial Control System) are computers that handles all the industrial processes, computers that are programmed to do one thing and one specific thing only, unlike our regular PCs which you can play games or surf the internet and whatever. ICS will be computers who control valves, releases chemicals into vats, spins stuff around, or whatever automated processes may happen at an industrial facility.

SIS (Safety Instrumented System) are a kind of ICS that are responsible to check that everything is going alright and, if needed, will take over the process in case some ICS is failing and may result in damage, fire, injury or other disasters. So a SIS are monitoring failsafes, meant to prevent what happened in Bhopal.

Unless, of course, you program a malware intended to make the SIS malfunction.

What happened in the Saudi Arabian petrochemical facility started as follows:

The attackers successfully implanted a remote access trojan, which just like in the BlackEnergy case, makes the attackers able to control infected machines remotely. However, you can't infect a ICS or SIS this way, you need to enter a regular computer with internet access first, which is what they did. The initial machine was an engineering station, on which ICS and SIS computers are controlled. From there, the attackers wanted to plant their own software on the ICS and SIS machines, but there was a problem; the software can't be installed without someone turning a physical key on the Triconex devices, as a security measure. A second problem is that every time new software changes are made to a Triconex device, the old software will be deleted and replaced entirely by the new, which meant that the malware was at risk of being deleted if any engineer made any software changes.

So a second piece of Triton malware was made to overcome those hurdles. Instead of being save where the software should be saved in the Triconex devices, it saved itself where the firmware was installed (the piece of software that's made to have the Triconex work as opposed to where the software that tells the Triconex what to do), this not only gave Triton persistence even if new software was loaded, but also overrides the physical key as firmware always has administrator privileges. With all this in place, the attacker could execute any commands at the comfort of their home to both the ICS and SIS systems in the facility.

As luck would have it, before the attackers were able to cause any harm, the facility experienced a safety incident, prompting shutdown of the whole operation, and an investigation later uncovered the malware in the systems. Had Triton not been discovered in time, it would have been able to cause catastrophic failures similar to what happened in Bhopal. But just because it was thwarted this time, doesn't mean it's gone for good. There will always be some actor who is willing to try again.

Coming from someone who likes II neg, I feel like the biggest issue many active communtiy members have is not having nuance

Like okay II is bad(or certian parts yadada), so why is it bad well that's because the writers are bad at writing, why are they bad at writing? Well they may just be uneducated- Clearly their all bad people because as we know good people would write a better show which means they must all be bad horrible cis het white straight man queerbaiting children

Like I've seen people say that, and coming from someone critical of the II team and the show. That's a VERY odd thing to assume right off the bat, it feels like you don't want to be critcial of the actual people but rather whar you think they are. It's like we as a communtiy feel the need to give a reason on why we dislike these people so we make them the worst possible thing to exist(to us). II isn't disney, their not cishetmen in suits, they've writeen bad shit but when you look at the current potical views of the team it's clear they are more leftleaning than anything.

The og ask was made when justin still used he/they, but I always found it soo werid how many people who are II neg seemed to ignore the fact Justin is Nonbianry/isn't cis. Honeslty I think 3 months in most the critism I started seeing felt like a flanderazation of what I had seen in the past. It felt like there was a said narrative I had to follow to post and if my cirtism wasn't just the same rycelded take I'd be shot on the spot (and also if it didn't accuse the writers and writiing of being bigoted) which it is! (AT certian points, but I feel like the II neg tag will take things they subjectivly don't like and put that label on them because their of said miniority and feel like their being discrimanted againts because that exprience didn't line up with theirs 1:1). Honestly when it comes to neg some of you guys are just as mindless as the fans you rant on but that a issue in all neg tags so meh.

Not to baby the crew memebers their all adults their not dumbasses. But honeslty to fellow II neg?? People? Fans? Whatever, sometimes I feel like we gave up cirtizing II a long time ago. I feel like it's a competetion to see who can find the "bigoted" moment in the newest episode. Which is important to do! II has a bunch of bad rep/shitty parts. But it feels like were scared the critism we have won't stand if we don't link it to the crew being bigots in someway, so we basically make these serious issues into buzzwords we throw around to shit on the II cast.

Again mabye I'm misunderstanding points, or anything I'm not saying everyone who thinks any of the II crew are bad/shit idfk even queer baiters is wrong mabye I'm the one giving the white guys too much lesiure and mabye I should see them as the dark vators of the osc who the hell knows. But sometimes it's like you guys are misconsudring their actions to fit your vision for them.

I can't say I still like II, I'm not a fan of most of the crew members (Only Sam since I like his tpot writing lol) and I'm thankful I found the tag (I love analazying shit in a critcal and none critical way), and it was a great place to be to vent my issues with the ladder part of III, and the show in genral). I do agree a lot of II fans are unciritcal of the show and I do agree we shpuld normalize ciritism in the osc since it only servers to imporves the work we make.

(Also some of you guys Glaze really shit critism I'm sorry you need better tastse) alsoo I feel like people who are very agreesivly on the tag need to chill (ESPICALLY to the tweens on there, I see you and I know what it feels like to be a loser sucked into online discourse it's not worth it broski I was once like you broski) but that could be another ask lmao
