Do you think Ino only ended up with Sai was because she couldn't have the real Sasuke?

I think Sai was created as a consolation prize for Ino. She fell for him because he fit her type of guy, looking similarly to Sasuke (whom she had always referred to as a "positive love.). Now I wish I could believe she fell for him organically, but it just felt so off. I never read the Shippuden manga, so I don't know if there's more development for them there, but as it sticks to anime canon, I barely saw anything that indicated that Sai felt the same way for her. (Still hate that the compliment he gave her when they first met, was meant as the opposite of what he thought.) (I know Blank Period gave more SaiIno moments, but ehhh... Most “[media] critical” forums have lost the plot, and it’s disappointing to see. Especially with media like arcane which, unlike most animated series, is adult media - a fact that needs to be considered when critiquing it.

Ciritical analysis refers to things like how s2 abandoned the s1 idea that “technology isn’t inherently corrupt, the people controlling it are” for the arcane corruption arc, or how Ekko is regulated to almost a “model minority” character despite being portrayed as an activist, or how the portrayal of mental health is complex and yet chooses very specific aspects to fall back into stereotypes with, and so on, and so on..

It is media intake that points out the bias of the writers and the motives behind why things were done.

This is even more necessary because of how well Arcane handles most of its other political aspects, even if from a neutral view. They’re fine showing and discussing things like police brutality, so let’s think about WHY they drew the line at placing blame on tech giants. What are the motivations behind that. Who pays a videogame studio’s bills at the end of the day. How does this influence the art they produce.

That is what the basis of critical analysis is.

Critical analysis is not “this character choice was Bad and OOC because well I just didn’t like it” when it makes textual sense for that character, or “this arc’s ending was bad because it made me feel upset” even if it sends the message they were aiming for with that entire arc, or “guys this character got a good/bad ending when they didn’t deserve it this is horrible writing” when.. what. Bad things happen to good people and vice versa I cannot believe I have to point that out.

That’s actually what we call a lack of critical thinking, because you cannot critique a media if you didn’t even pay attention to surface level themes. That is you confusing the emotions caused by a piece of art for the message behind the art. Which is upsetting because it’s a sign we’ve become disconnected from art as a concept

A story is meant to elicit emotions, you are supposed to form your own opinions on if you like it or not, but a piece of art making you feel sad or frustrated or angry isn’t a failing of the art. It doesn’t mean it’s poor writing. Dare I say that was the goal of any artist and is an effect of skilled writing.

Trying to align your emotions and a characters actions to an author’s moral purity and if the work is “good media” under the guise of critical media analysis is just.. sad. I love critical analysis but that’s not what half of yall are doing anymore.

When Jaskier stepped into the classroom, the noise was incredible. It didn’t get better with the arrival of the teacher, either.

Not that Jaskier had expected any different. It was the last day of school before winter break, and the students were giddy with the prospect of two whole weeks without school. Hell, Jaskier was looking forward to it almost as much, even if he couldn’t let it show without losing all semblance of control.

And his last assessment had rather pointedly mentioned the cacophony of his class as a symptom of inadequate classroom control. Never mind that it was music class, and a lack of noise would have meant that no learning was happening.

Still, he didn’t need another black mark on his record. He slung his usual guitar and picked up a trumpet instead, blowing a sharp, high-pitched blast to override all the noise. The students winced, clapped their hands over their ears, and otherwise finally shut up.

“Good,” Jaskier said brightly. “I know vacation’s almost here, but if we have to make that much noise, let’s at least be melodic about it. Now, the Spring Concert is still several months away, but let’s talk about--”

Someone was knocking on the classroom door. “Hold that thought,” Jaskier said. “Normally I’d say you can talk amongst yourselves, but I’m not sure you can be trusted with that today.” He ducked around his desk to open the door.

“It’s fine,” Geralt said. “They’re watching a movie and Yenn said she’d look in on them. But I, mm.” He ground to a halt, lips twisting as he searched for words. “Ciri said,” he started, and stopped again.

Cirit was Geralt’s own daughter. School rules forbade her being in Geralt’s class, but she was in a class with both Yennefer and Jaskier. Jaskier immediately started wracking his brain, trying to remember if he’d said anything in front of her that would be embarrassing if passed along to her father, the man that Jaskier had been crushing on for at least the last three years. Nothing came to mind, which was not necessarily comforting. He waited a moment, then gently prompted, “Ciri said?”

Geralt grimaced. “She said you were going to be alone for the holidays.”

Oh, that. Jaskier almost drooped in relief. That wasn’t embarrassing, aside from the certainty -- already common knowledge -- that Jaskier didn’t have a partner to spend it with. “Yeah,” he agreed easily. “My family’s all pretty far from here, and if I’m honest, not really worth the effort.”

“Mm,” Geralt agreed. “She thought-- that is, we thought. That you might like to join us for. Dinner. Or something.”

Something lurched painfully in Jaskier’s midsection. “You don’t have to do that,” he said. “I’ve been alone for a lot of holidays, it’ll be fine.”
