"O mais importante santuário à Nossa Senhora de Nazaré está em Belém do Pará. Seu início remonta à uma imagem encontrada por um certo Plácido, na virada da segunda metade do século XVIII, em uma área de floresta nas proximidades da Estrada do Utinga. A origem dessa pequena imagem esteve até há pouco envolvida em mistério. Indubitavelmente é um trabalho do entalhador Hans Xaver Treyer, de Brixen, Tirol do Sul. Ele veio à Belém em 1703 e montou sua oficina no colégio dos missionários jesuítas [Igreja de Santo Alexandre]. Dela vieram várias imagens para as igrejas das missões nas margens dos rios do norte do Brasil, como aquelas no Murtigura [no município de Barcarena], Iburajuba [no município do Moju], Jaguarari​ [município do Acará], Chibrié, Sauma, Itacuruçá [muncípio de Abaetetuba] e Piraveri [no município de Altamira].

Na busca por madeiras adequadas para seu ofício, irmão Treyer vagava pelas matas e, conforme com o costume, fez um nicho em uma árvore onde colocou uma imagem de Maria - um local para relaxamento e restauração religiosa após o trabalho.

Treyer pereceu em um naufrágio no alto rio Maracanã, na comunidade indígena de São Miguel. O nicho com a imagem permaneceu esquecido, até que 13 anos depois o nativo Plácido a encontrou. E assim ela aparece sob a denominação de Nossa Senhora de Nazaré na história religiosa do Pará e Amazonas. No seu aspecto, as características faciais da imagem denunciam a mão do entalhador tirolês e se diferenciam bastante das imagens portuguesas de Nossa Senhora. A veneração a Maria ganhou novo impulso no Pará quando a esplêndida basílica do Padre Afonso Georgi, da ordem dos barnabitas, foi construída. A festividade de Nossa Senhora de Nazaré organizada anualmente em Belém pode talvez ser considerada a maior celebração religiosa vista no Brasil".
