unpopular (?) opinion: despite the excellence of both the production and the recording cast, jeffrey cirio’s hilarion absolutely outshined james streeter’s albrecht as a male lead (even more unpopular, everyone in the principal cast outshined james streeter). also idk if it’s james streeter or albrecht’s character, but he’s so flavourless and bland compared to jeffrey cirio. i still love everything about akram khan’s giselle though.

Bows from last night’s Nutcracker with Boston Ballet! Feat. Chisako Oga as the Sugar Plum Fairy, John Lam as the Nutcracker prince, Daniel Rubin as Drosselmeyer, Ji Young Chae and Jeffrey Cirio as Snow Queen & King, and Viktorina Kapitonova as Dew Drop.
I am very biased since this version of Nutcracker is the very first full ballet I ever saw live - on my 18th birthday, almost exactly 10 years ago, and with Ashley Ellis and Yury Yanowsky in the lead roles. But it’s still my favorite. The giant bear is iconic. The costumes and sets are beautiful. Drosselmeyer is a DILF in this version. I only wish the stage (and the company itself) were bigger so we could have a much larger corps during the snow scene and waltz of the flowers.

Misty Copeland and Jeffrey Cirio in Don Quixote, American Ballet Theatre, May 2017. © Rosalie O’Connor.
Copeland was impeccably prepared; every aspect of her dancing and presentation was polished, nothing left to chance. Her phrasing, perfectly timed to the music, was particularly impressive. In the first act, when Kitri bangs her fan on the floor repeatedly as she circle the stage with jumps, each smack was strong and right on the beat. No pretend smacks for her. Nor was anything exaggerated in her interpretation. Her Kitri was down to earth, self-assured, charming and funny, though not terribly impetuous.

I hate to complain about high quality Cojocaru videos but GOD she and Cirio are the only redeeming parts of that performance and production...
