They Do Not Exist (1974) by Mustafa Abu Ali (watch)
from PalestineCinema.com:
Salvaged from the ruins of Beirut after 1982, Abu Ali's early film has only recently been made available. Shooting under extraordinary conditions, the director, who worked with Godard on his Ici et Ailleurs (Here and Elsewhere), and founded the PLO's film division, covers conditions in Lebanon's refugee camps, the effects of Israeli bombardments, and the lives of guerrillas in training camps. They Do Not Exist is a stylistically unique work which demonstrates the intersection between the political and the aesthetic. Now recognised as a cornerstone in the development of Palestinian cinema, the film only received its Palestine premiere in 2003, when a group of Palestinian artists "smuggled" the director to a makeshift cinema in his hometown of Jerusalem (into which Israel bars his entry). Abu Ali, who saw his film for the first time in 20 years at this clandestine event noted: "We used to say 'Art for the Struggle', now it's 'Struggle for the Art'"

Home is where I want to be, but I guess I'm already there
I come home, she lifted up her wings. I guess that this must be the place
I can't tell one from another—Did I find you, or you find me?
There was a time before we were born
If someone asks, this where I'll be
Where I'll be

Leave The City was "One day I'll leave this place, but right now, I can't. In the meanwhile I'll fight to stay alive and not lose hope about making the final escape. We're in this together."
Paladin Strait is "I'm risking death to return to the very place they battered my soul in to dismantle the whole system and thus make the final escape. We're in this together."

TIL that The Silence of the Lambs (1991) was designed by a woman named Dawn Baillie. She isn't even mentioned in the movie's Wikipedia page and her individual Wikipedia page doesn't contain any images of her work. This iconic poster is characteristic of Baillie's signature simplicity, subtlety and cleverly hidden symbolism within her design, giving just enough to intrigue the viewer and entice them to watch the film. Her work for The Silence of the Lambs received numerous awards, most notably named "best film poster of the last 35 years" at the 2006 Key Art Awards. Her work also includes other iconic posters, including Dirty Dancing, Little Miss Sunshine and Isle of Dogs.
When asked to choose her favorite poster she's designed she said, "As a mother, I love all of my children. Each poster has its own story of love, challenges, tears, and triumphs. I love the first one, for “Dirty Dancing,” because it gave me confidence, and I love the last because it proves I’m still capable."

The Forgotten (Don't Look in the Basement, 1973)
"Perhaps I shouldn't have come here at all."
"I don't think there's any point in our talking about your leaving, Miss Beale. You forget, you were very anxious to take this job. I made special provisions for you to be here."
"I realise that, but I don't know what to do!"
"I'm the doctor and you're the nurse, and what I do decides what you will do!"

🏳‍🌈🌈Movie Recommendation 13
Edward II (1991) 💖💖💖
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Edward II (1991) by Dereck Jarman ( a very modern adaptation of Christopher Marlowe's play), is one of my favourite movies; it may not be perhaps to everyone's taste.
I always wanted to do a video of Edward and Piers' tragic love story. It took a while but I finally did it, I hope some of you will like it. You can see it on my fanvid YT channel.
Here is a scene of Edward II and Piers with Annie Lennox singing a Cole Porter song in the background...💖💔🎵

I said this over a month ago, not expecting to deliver on my threat promise, but here we are I guess! My first Maude/Vivian fic to add to the painfully small amount on ao3 (and I get it now, because damn, those two are hard to write!)
It's a capital C character study, so don't expect too much plot lol
Summary
When they go to the cinema, Maude finds herself watching Vivian rather than the movie, reminiscing. Maude has always been aware that the way she feels when she touches Vivian — or looks at her, or even so much as thinks about her — is different from the way she does when she touches (or looks at, or thinks about) other women. And, judging from the way her friend looks at her, and the frequency with which she reaches out to her, Maude’s pretty sure Viv feels the same.
