TIL that The Silence of the Lambs (1991) was designed by a woman named Dawn Baillie. She isn't even mentioned in the movie's Wikipedia page and her individual Wikipedia page doesn't contain any images of her work. This iconic poster is characteristic of Baillie's signature simplicity, subtlety and cleverly hidden symbolism within her design, giving just enough to intrigue the viewer and entice them to watch the film. Her work for The Silence of the Lambs received numerous awards, most notably named "best film poster of the last 35 years" at the 2006 Key Art Awards. Her work also includes other iconic posters, including Dirty Dancing, Little Miss Sunshine and Isle of Dogs.
When asked to choose her favorite poster she's designed she said, "As a mother, I love all of my children. Each poster has its own story of love, challenges, tears, and triumphs. I love the first one, for “Dirty Dancing,” because it gave me confidence, and I love the last because it proves I’m still capable."
#i stumbled onto this because i'm making a pres on different ways illustration is used and was struggling to find artist who were not men...#finding out she designed both sotl AND little miss sunshine means EVERYTHING to me#learning so much and consuming so much art preparing for the upcoming class i'll be teaching#lest we forget the lamb#silence of the lambs#the silence of the lambs#dawn baillie#poster design#movie poster#film#cinema#design
