Cici Arthur presents: Cartwheels for Coins

New music from Joseph Shabason, Chris A. Cummings, Thom Gill

Cici Arthur is the new project featuring Toronto artists Joseph Shabason, Chris A. Cummings, Thom Gill who are releasing the new album Way Through for a February 21st release date via Western Vinyl. The album features guests and frequent collaborators Owen Pallet, Nicholas Krgovich, Phil Melanson, and Dorothea Paas. 

Seeking to create large-scale set pieces to showcase Cummings’ vocals and writing (he was previously known as Mantler on the Tomlab label), producer-instrumentalists Shabason and Gill have parked their brand of smartly subverted adult contemporary aesthetics near the mid-century slink of Antonio Carlos Jobim, or the romantic opulence of Frank Sinatra.

The resulting outsize backdrop sits in poetic contrast to Cummings’ comparatively discreet delivery and intimate lyricism. Steering the Shabason-Gill cruise liner with delicate intonation and quiet introspection, Cummings paints a picture of city lights gleaming in rain puddles, mapping subtle emotional territories within the urban gloom while resigning in a kind of joyous ennui. “If I could be all that once looked so great and grand, I would have died for an occasion to rise to,” he sings through the horn section of ‘Cartwheels for Coins’, “but it’s a gray sky, nothing to say, mixed emotions always get in the way”. Lines like these epitomize Cici Arthur’s music; when the bandstand empties out and the singer finds himself alone on a darkened soundstage, the emotional complexities of life still lie waiting to be confronted. Cummings lends a literary counterweight to Shabason and Gill’s sonic splendor, and in doing so spotlights the inherent tension between pragmatism and ambition

The album takes the communal spirit of Shabason’s previous jazz ventures to panoramic heights -- as heard here on the new single "Cartwheels for Coins" -- with the previously mentioned guests, with the result akin to so much music in Joseph Shabason’s orbit; spinning around a centerpoint of humanness and vulnerability, placing even its most colossal elements comfortingly within arm’s reach. Cummings' ground realism gives the track a vocal identity that, when intertwined, is hard to forget.

Charlie Chips! A biography-

Charlie was born from retired pet variants, Cici and Clyde. Though their interaction with their offspring begins and ends with the birthing of their litter. The caregivers take over, sometimes volunteers, taking up the task of raising the pups until they begin to gestate around age 6.

Charlie was then put into the PAWS adoption system, some pets wait a long time before they are chosen. Others run off and try to escape into the wild where they can only hope to be snatched by a catcher. Pets in custody last longer, basic needs are met by the specially designed PAWS products and a master figure helps establish healthy habits and behaviors.

This particular pup was obedient and loyal to a fault and stayed for a good 2 years before he was adopted by Arthur Moran, future founder of Golden Calf.--

In honor of spooky month, have some more necromancer Sydney (Spoilers for Scream 3)

Sydney looked at Roman in sheer disbelief as he went through the hows and why of everything he'd done, how he'd destroyed her life and the lives of everyone around her.

She shook her head. "You made three mistakes, Roman."

"Oh?" He smiled in a way she recognized as someone pretending they weren't angry. "And what would those be?"

"Your first mistake is you gave up when Mom slammed the door in her face. All you had to do was talk to Dad. He would have taken you in in a heartbeat, and I would have loved having a cool Hollywood big brother. You could have stolen her family out from under her."

Roman's face did a small twist and Sydney felt a bit of vindictive glee that he was thwarted in having what he'd claimed to want and only had himself to blame.

"The second is you've miscast me. 'Sydney the Star'? Please." She rolled her eyes. "Stars play their role. I've refused every part anyone's tried to cast me in. The third was killing Milton in front of me."

"Seriously?" He asked in disbelief, gesturing with his knife to the body on the floor. "You're upset over that piece of shit?"

"No." Sydney shook her head. "But you really shouldn't have filled this room with blood."

She made a yanking motion and blood exploded out the slice in Milton's neck towards her. It didn't touch her, but spread to each side, solidifying into three forms.

Roman's eyes widened at the sight of Tatum Riley, Randy Meeks, and Derek Feldman.

"Don't bother trying to find the special effects." Blood swirled around her as more hands seemed to materialize through the floor.

Soon faces joined them. Casey Becker. Steven Orth. Arthur Himbry. Kenny Jones. Maureen Evans. Phil Stevens. Cici Cooper. Steven Stone. More and more of those who he killed or he inspired to be killed. Roman tried to scramble back as the hands clawed at him. One managed to slash his leg and he could feel his blood get suctioned out toward the mass swirling around Sydney.

"I could have brought Billy, his mom, Stu, and Mickey. I'm sure they all wanted a piece of you too. But after what they pulled, they don't get to play. Here's the truth Roman, I'm not the Star. I'm the Editor. I change the script and right now," Sydney smiled, her eyes turning black. "I'm changing the genre."

I Want Some Pizza

Eventually, they had to stop for food.

“Here!” declared Vivi, stopping at a Cici’s pizza.

“Huh, wonder if they have seafood,” wondered Arthur.

Vivi turned back to look at Lewis and Mystery.  “Would you mind feeding Mystery?”

Lewis nodded. “Sure, it’s no problem.  Would you mind putting on some sort of music before you leave?”

“Sure.”  Arthur fiddled with his computer and put on one of his Indie tracks.  “There we go.”

“We’ll try not to take too long,” said Vivi as the two living humans got out of the van.

“No need to hurry on my account,” said Lewis.  “I want to do some thinking anyway.”

That was good enough, and Vivi and Arthur walked into the restaurant.

Once they’d gotten some food (an obscene amount in Vivi’s case) and found a table, Vivi decided to ask Arthur something important.  “So what do you think of the ghost?”

Arthur blinked. “Uh, I, uh, I guess he’s okay.  We only met him yesterday.  He acts more or less like a normal person though, which is nice.”

Vivi nodded between bites.  “Yeah, I can’t say for sure since we didn’t know him, but I think that he’s acting the same as he did when he was alive.”

Arthur frowned. “It’s just…He acted like he knew us, but he doesn’t really seem familiar.  Did he seem familiar to you at all?”

Vivi shook her head. “Nope.”  She grinned at Arthur.  “Maybe he had a crush on one of us in high school.”

Arthur blushed. “I, uh, maybe.”  He huffed in frustration.  “I wouldn’t be the best person to notice that sort of thing.”

“Yeah, you’re really oblivious with flirting,” agreed Vivi.  “Oh!  Maybe your uncle or my parents know something!”

“Well, maybe if he had to have his car looked at,” admitted Arthur.

Since Vivi was busy eating her huge meal, it was up to him to check this potential lead.  He took out his cellphone and hit his uncle’s contact information.

It took a few minutes for Lance to pick up, but considering how busy he was, it wasn’t surprising.  “Hey Arthur? You two okay?”

“Yeah, we’re fine. Great.  Actually, came across a ghost last night.”

“…What kind of ghost?” questioned Lance.

“A surprisingly friendly ghost,” admitted Arthur.  “He acted like he knew us, but neither of us recognized him.”

Lance was silent for a moment.  “And what did this ghost look like?”

“Uh, good question. He’s got a floating skull with no jaw…or face.  The rest looks…normal-ish.  He tried doing some sort of glamour to show us what he used to look like, but he seems to be under some sort of curse that makes his glamours all…pixelated-smoky-distorted-unpleasant to look at.  He tried telling us his name, but it made us pass out for some reason.  Really the only definitive things I can tell you about his appearance is that he’s like seven feet tall, really muscular, and has an actual pompadour.”

“And he can cook,” added Vivi.

“Oh, yeah, thanks for reminding me,” said Arthur.  “And he said he was a professional chef…and went to our high school.  Does it ring a bell?”

Lance was silent for a moment.  “No.”

“Huh. Weird…”  Arthur thought for a moment.  This meant the ghost was either lying or the curse was affecting the whole town, possibly others.  “Think you could ask around and see if anyone recognizes him?”

“Sure.”

“Okay, thanks. Talk to you soon.”  Arthur hung up.  “Lance doesn’t know him.”

Vivi swallowed.  “Okay, I’ll call my dad once we’re back on the road.  Maybe he knows something.”

First Weekend With the Boys

This is the first time I’ve ever actually had them on my own. It’s a good thing, I think. We’ve had some time to reconnect. The boys know me as Daddy. Their best friend. They can tell me anything. They can ask for anything, and if I say yes, I mean it. Of course I spoiled them a bit. I went up to pick them up. I got there about 45 minutes early, so I hit my old casino. I made $35 at Blackjack in about 7 minutes. Decided to leave. Went and the boys were just getting there. They were ecstatic to see me.

From there we had to stop at an auto parts store. My check engine light had come on during the trip. I needed to find out if it was anything serious. It wasn’t. But my younger son, Arthur, saw the toys in front of the register. The ones that are marked up anywhere from 60 to 700%. So they talked me out of $4.

From there we went to Cici’s for dinner. Lady had an issue with me giving her a $100 bill. I had an issue with her having an issue, so she just used it, finally, giving me a bit of a dirty look. Weird since they’re pretty close to the casino. Maybe I wasn’t the first one that night. You do need small bills in retail, I understand.

Boys ate three rounds of pizza. They were so psyched. They noticed the arcade. We checked it out. It used tokens. I bought $20 worth, then $10 more. We dominated the wave runner game or whatever it was. Hank was killing it. I was really proud of how fast he picked it up. Arthur gave away like $8 in tokens to the claw machines. He gradually learned how to play, but you really  never win on those. Always cheaper to just buy the item. In any case, we tired of that and hit the road. We made two stops on the way to my house. The second was a bathroom stop. Arthur decided to take all his clothes off in order to potty. It was a serious poop he needed to lay. So I had to help get redressed while Hank ran the aisles. It was a weird little store, kind of like a bodega. it had three gambling machines. I also have three gambling machines. My guess is that his business is truly gambling, beer, and gas. Anyway I bought an overpriced coffee from him, so he wasn’t mad about the amount of time and energy we spent for everyone to go potty. Then we got to my town and went to Walmart. The boys immediately talked me into more toys. Arthur had earlier lost his car, so I bought him a pack of cars. We got a garage. Some other stuff. Plus milk and cereal and other things I don’t eat by nature, but they do eat by nature. Then we finally got home. They love their room, they love it here, and they don’t want to leave tomorrow. I explained it won’t be much longer. This will be their home all the time. Along with their younger brother and sister. And we’ll get a dog. Mommy’s just sick right now. She won’t be much longer. Before long she’ll be back in that stage where she is sorry for all the crap she pulled. I look forward to that, but I hope she never relapses again. Schizophrenia is worse than cheating or drug addiction. Often it includes both. She cheated many times this time around, maybe more than 10 different guys. I really don’t care anymore. It doesn’t matter in the end. I just need my family back together. So here I am. The boys are still up, but they’re finally winding down. I could do this on my own if I had to.
