Chris: Dad… is Buck ok?

Eddie: Chris, I can’t be honest about that and still stay here in El Paso.

Everytime I remember that Eddie motherfucking Diaz decided to make this guy who he’s known for less than two years the LEGAL GUARDIAN TO HIS CHILD, and THEN doesn’t say a word to him about it for another year, and only does when said guy says it should’ve been him who was shot in Eddie’s place, and has been entirely reckless ever since Eddie was shot repeatedly risking his life so he doesn’t lose the people he cares about, JUST SO THAT HE MAKES SURE THE GUY DOESNT DO SOMETHING STUPID AND RECKLESS AGAIN … well I’m entirely normal about that.

The saddest part of this ending is that Christopher became exactly like his parents: a person who runs away from his problems.

Eddie and Shannon did it in their own ways (the army and Los Angeles) and they had to deal with the consequences of their actions for the rest of their lives and they wanted to prevent Christopher from going through that at all costs and they didn't succeed.

Now Christopher is just like his parents, a person who runs away from his problems and doesn't want to talk about them, who breaks things when he gets angry and tries to hurt the person who hurt him even when he loves him.

And the worst of all is that Christopher is also like his other dad.

Christopher just wants to be loved, just like Buck, he just wants people to stop leaving, but people always leave.

So now we have Christopher Diaz, following in the same footsteps as his three parents, running away because he's angry and he's angry because people always leave him.

The difference between Christopher and all of them? It's just that Chris is loved either way.

Christopher has something that neither Eddie, nor Shannon, nor Buck had and it is a home that loves him, where Buck and Eddie are waiting for him to come back, and that even if he doesn't come back, even if he can never forgive his father, his two dads are going to love him for the rest of their lives. Because Christopher is worth being loved, and being waited for as long as necessary.

Guys this may sound crazy, but what if one of the reasons that Christopher was sent to live with his grandparents was to show that Buck and Eddie’s relationship didn’t revolve solely on their connection with him. Like they obviously both love and care for Chris, but it’s a testament to their bond with one another— even if Chris is gone their connection doesn’t falter… I also think that for Eddie, Christopher may play a role in his feeling realization. Imagine Eddie finally confronting his parents and having the ability to talk with Chris face to face for the first time since the incident. Then, Chris is like “well what about Buck” and Eddie is like “what do you mean?” And Chris is like “he’s family, we can’t just abandon him”.

What if this time, at the end of the episode... Chris reaches out to Eddie via Zoom, and instead of being behind the sofa hiding, Buck is sat there with Eddie this time, wide smiles and happy at seeing his little (no so little anymore) buddy?!

i feel like, in a daily, chris rushes into any room and screams "buck, the floor is lava!" and buck instantly jumps (and with instantly i mean chris screams floor and he's already standing) and picks him up and throws him into the couch or any soft surface.

this "tradition" started when he was a little younger and he did scream the floor is lava thinking buck would jump to save himself, but instead buck crossed the whole room to grab him and put both of them on the sofa, looking around scared like there actually was lava. chris laughed and told him he was too slow and his feet were burned by now and buck scoffed and said "i had to get you to safety first. how are we supposed to sail through the lava without our captain?" and chris absolutely loved it.

eddie loved it too but was too busy laying down crying on the lava to say anything.

edit: twenty years later, during christmas, Christopher crouches next to his son and softly whispers "tell grandpa the floor is lava". his son is confused but he does anyway, and buck jumps from his place, a big smile on his face as he grabs his two grandchildren and carries them to the couch, ignoring Eddie's screams of "you're not thirty anymore, evan, stop it!"
