Okay this thought just popped into my brain and I kinda wanna write a fic about it and kinda want to just put it out in the ether.
So, Buck is going to have to go around and tell everyone in his life that he’s in now and dating Tommy. I could see one of the last people he tells being Christopher. So imagine, he takes Christopher out for the day so he can build up to coming out to him.
When he does, he says something like, “I’ve learned some thing about myself lately that I want to share with you” and then drops he’s bisexual. He goes to explain, but Chris already knows that it means he likes both girls and guys. The Buck tells him he’s seeing someone, a guy specifically, but doesn’t mention a name just yet.
Christopher starts to get excited and says, “Wait? It’s the guy you’re seeing my dad? Oh my god it’s finally happening!” And he starts going on about how he’s been waiting for this forever, and that he knew it was coming after Eddie and Marisol broke up, and that he’s so happy that the three of them can finally be an official family now and that he and Eddie can get married and Buck would get to be his dad, too.
Buck, in shock, has to back track and correct him that no he’s not dating Eddie, but he’s dating Tommy. Christopher is so confused, “Dad’s friend Tommy? You’re not dating dad? Why, but you’re in love with each other?”
Once again, Buck is bewildered by that statement, and asks him why he thinks that. Christopher starts listing reasons left and right, things he’s seen about how they react when they’re hurt, domestic things at Eddie’s house, talking about how they look at each other, Buck’s jealousy over Eddie and Tommy hanging out (which he overheard in a conversation between Eddie and Tommy), etc. Buck just can’t believe it, but he’s starting to think about all these instances Chris is talking about.
The Chris hits him with how devastated he is that it’s not happening. “I like Tommy, and he’s great but It’s supposed to be the three of us. Now you’re telling me it’s never going to happen?” Buck tries comforting him, but Chris is too upset and just asks Buck to take him home.
When they get back to Eddie’s Chris, still sad, but tells Buck anyway, “I’m happy you found out your bi. I love you, Buck.” They hug and briefly, but Chris goes off to his room and closes the door, leaving Buck on the couch to think about what the hell just happened.

but when i tried to love him i loved at the wrong time
this is a two for one spec inspired by this post and my long lost love trapped dads
any complaints about this fic can and should be directed to @evankinard who bullied me into writing this for her after i ruined her day with a single dm. love you bby <3
Eddie breaks apart a little the moment Buck disappears from view, lets himself feel the wound in his side as an excuse not to feel the big unwieldy thing unfolding in his chest like a colonising panic. He hadn't wanted to leave him, not after half an hour trapped in that smoky room clinging to each other to ground themselves in the reality they were trapped in, but Buck had made several stubborn and convincing arguments about Christopher before announcing he wouldn't move if Eddie didn't. Eddie had tried, had tried to get Buck out first, Buck who had just found happiness with—with Tommy, Buck who has always deserved to live. But Hen and Chim had come in with the clinical wisdom of paramedics and said a rebar through the abdomen was always going to take priority over a fractured leg.
Now, Eddie is rolled out of a collapsing building, leaving behind Buck—a bird with a broken wing, incapable of moving.
God, the noises Buck had made when he'd dragged himself over to Eddie's side. They'll be haunting him for years, for whatever lifetime he has left. Worse somehow than the first time with an entire engine on top of him. Except this time, Eddie couldn't hold his hand. Not now, but not before either because... Because that was someone else's job now. And like a laugh from the universe, Tommy appears just as Eddie reaches down to put the brakes on the gurney before Hen and Chim can get him into the ambulance.
"Kinard?" Bobby greets him with a grim-faced nod. "What are you doing here?"
"Heard you might need an assist from air support." He shrugs, but the breathlessness in the voice and the way his eyes keep jumping around the gathered 118 like he's only counting the one man not there reveals his nonchalance as the act it is. "Thought I'd swing by."
"Isn't that a conflict of interest?" Chimney asks.
"Fine, so I stole a helicopter again. Sue me for wanting to offer a hand." Tommy's face draws as soon as he stops speaking, and he glances back at the building waiting to swallow Eddie's heart whole. "How is he?"
"Holding in there," Eddie answers, voice tight enough to have Tommy really seeing him for the first time. "Think his bad leg is fractured."
"Shit," Tommy hisses, clenching his fists at his side.
"Yeah," Eddie breathes out. "Can't get himself out because of it. I wouldn't have left him, but—"
"He insisted," Tommy says, something entirely too knowing in his voice and his eyes. Eddie swallows thickly.
"And, well..." He gestures weakly to the rebar in his side, Buck's undershirt, now soaked through with Eddie's blood, wrapped around it as a makeshift bandage.
"Shit, Diaz." Tommy grimaces. "Shouldn't you be getting to the hospital?"
"He's refusing care until Buck is out too," Hen deadpans, pressing a new pad of gauze to his wound a little too firmly for it not to be intentional. Eddie just grits his teeth.
"Of course he is," Tommy murmurs. Eddie is too much of a coward to face up to whatever expression is on Tommy's face when he says it, so instead he focuses on the Incident Commander approaching Bobby.
"Site's been deemed too unstable," he announces. "No more personnel are to enter until we've found a way to stabilise it."
"My..." Bobby calms himself when his voice comes out in a growl. "My man is in there."
"And sending another man in there would be a suicide mission." The Incident Commander grimaces apologetically. "Sorry, Captain. That's an order."
Bobby turns his gaze back to the building, something so tightly drawn in him that it makes Eddie hurt all the worse. He knows without a shadow of a doubt what Bobby's thinking. He can't lose another son to a burning building.
And here, maybe this would be where Eddie runs back into the building and drags Buck out all on his own, maybe this would be where he finally gets to repay the favour for the gravel burn on his back, maybe this is where he'd get to redeem himself from the helplessness he'd felt just lowering Buck down to the ground. Except. There's a rebar in his side. Even with the adrenaline, even with the love... Eddie doesn't think he'd make it three steps before falling to his knees—a prayer in and of itself.
Instead, Eddie turns to look at Tommy. Tommy who is already looking at him, something determined and understanding and loving trapped behind the wildness of his eyes. A beat passes between them, silence saying more than they ever could.
"Bring him back to—" Me. But. Not to me.
Because that's not Eddie's place anymore. Eddie doesn't get to ask that of Buck's boyfriend. Eddie doesn't get to ask that at all. He's no longer the person that will be shaking Buck's pain pills into his hand and fetching him a bottle of water. He's no longer the person that will be wrapping Buck's cast in a bin bag for a shower and listening to him lament about the indignity of it. He's no longer the person that will be pulling Buck out of bed on his worst days to remind him that he's real and valued and loved. No, that's not his job anymore. But, fuck, Tommy's the only better man for the job.
"Bring him back to us," Eddie tells him then, and it feels like he's finally let go of the baton in the relay race, sure Tommy's got a hold of it now. And Tommy looks as wrongfooted by this as Eddie feels, but he nods anyway and grabs Eddie's discarded helmet from his lap, strapping it on.
"Kinard, no one goes in," Bobby warns him. "That's an order."
"You're not my captain anymore." Tommy only smiles and shrugs before sprinting towards the doors.
Bobby curses, but there's relief in it. Hen and Chim just watch him go with something hopeful on their faces. And Eddie. Eddie's eyes start to droop.
"Hey, hey, Eddie." Chim snaps his fingers in front of his face, jolting Eddie back into semi-consciousness.
"Eddie, we need to get you to a hospital," Hen says calmly, reaching for the brakes.
"Move me an inch and I rip this rebar out of my side," he says lowly.
"Jesus, anyone ever tell you you're a drama queen?" Chim huffs.
"Yeah." Eddie chokes on his next breath a little. "The man trapped in that building."
A solemn silence settles over them then. They redirect their attention to the doors Tommy had disappeared into, and Hen lays a grounding hand on his shoulder as they wait.
It's not long before Tommy comes stumbling out of the building, looking every bit the action hero Eddie has never gotten to be for Buck what with his soot-stained face and Buck himself slung over his shoulder, splinted leg bouncing against his sternum. Hen and Bobby spring into action immediately, racing to meet them. Chim just unlocks Eddie's gurney and loads him into the ambulance, raising him up just enough to catch a perfect view of Tommy lowering Buck onto his own stretcher with a kiss to his forehead. The ambulance doors close, Chim knocks twice, the sirens begin to whine, and they lurch into motion.
"Did you draw the drama queen straw?" Eddie asks to distract himself from the tenderness of Tommy's kiss.
"Higher ups are a little more serious about conflicts of interest now Buck is officially my brother-in-law," Chim mumbles as he works on getting Eddie's IV in. "But also I'm better acquainted with rebars than Hen, so..."
Eddie huffs a weak laugh as his eyes drift to the ceiling, the clean white of it stinging his eyes.
"Chim?"
"Yeah?"
"Tomorrow isn't promised to anyone, right?" he chokes out. He doesn't take his eyes off the ceiling, but the sudden silence in the ambulance is as deafening as the siren overhead.
"No," Chim says eventually. "No, it's not."
"But what happens if the person you love..." Here, his voice breaks. An almighty crack right through the middle. It sounds like the building behind them just came crumbling down in his throat. "What happens if someone told them first?" He turns to face Chim's wide eyes. "Should you still tell them?"
"I-I don't know..." Chim opens his mouth a few times, a fish out of water, before he makes a decision. He takes a deep breath and squares his shoulders. "But what I do know is." He clears his throat. "If you let a wound like that fester... It'll kill you, Eddie."
"Yeah." Eddie lets his eyes fall shut.
I can feel it already.

Strictly Angst with a teeny tiny bit of Fluff
Eddie Diaz x Paramedic! Reader
Tumblr media
Later that night at home, Chris and I stood by the door and watched as Eddie fiddled with the couch pillows. Carla was coming back tonight, and Eddie was only slightly excited about her return. He had been fussing over intricate details since we had gotten home from work.
“What do you think? That looks better right?” Eddie asks, still fussing over the same two pillows he has been playing with for the last 5 minutes.
“I think it looks exactly the same.” Chris laughs as we watch Eddie continue to fluff the pillows.
“I just want everything to be perfect. It’s been over a year” Eddie finally turns around to look at Christopher and me.
“It’s going to be awesome!” Chris says. He had missed Carla more than anything in the world. With Eddie obviously in the number 1 spot, there was no doubt in my mind that Carla was number 2 on his list of favorite people. She had always been a steady female presence in his life that I knew that he needed. Whether he knew it or not. My thoughts are quickly interrupted by the knocking at the door that Chris excitedly moves towards. Opening the door, Chris all but screams Carla’s name before she laughs and wraps him up in a giant hug. The smiles on Christopher and Eddie’s faces are bright enough to light all of California with. Letting Christopher have the first hug, Eddie and I move slowly towards Carla before joining in the hug. If Carla didn’t feel missed based off of the giant hug, I don’t know how else we could have shown her.
Sitting around the table just like old times, eating and laughing together brought back a lot of great memories. Christopher had just gotten done telling Carla one of his crazy stories from school. “I’m sure your teacher was thrilled.” Carla laughs in return at his story. Noticing that the plates are empty, Eddie leans forward to grab them up as I quickly jump up to grab them for him.
“No, no, no let me grab those” I say, hurriedly moving to gather up the plates.
Carla tries to offer her help with Chris jumping in to stop her, “You can’t go in the kitchen!” Chris exclaims.
Carla gives him a funny look while I try to cover out tracks, it’s a secret that Christopher is very adamant on.
“That’s right,” I start as Eddie smiles and nods is head in agreeance, “we have some business to take care of." Carla chuckles as Christopher and I head off towards the kitchen.
We dump the dirty plates into the sink before I grab both of the cakes we made out of the oven, where we left them to sit until the right moment.
“Can we yell surprise when we come out of the kitchen?” Chris asked.
I laughed and before responding, “Well of course, how else would we surprise her.”
Christoper had begged us to make Carla two cakes, one for each birthday we had missed with her while she was away. He had chosen the colors of the cake, pink and blue. He had explained to Eddie and me that we needed both colors to split between the two boys and two girls. Opening the kitchen door and stepping out, we both yelled surprise, catching Carla off guard. Christopher walked up to Carla and wished her a Happy Birthday; we all knew her birthday is in March, but it felt right to celebrate the ones we missed together. Plus, who didn’t love extra cake.
“Light the candles dad.” Chris says to Eddie with Eddie magically pulling out candles from thin air. Carla looks over the two cakes, quickly counting the number of candles that were scattered across both tops.
“Okay that is a disturbing number of candles.” She laughs as Chrisopher moves to stand next to me.
“Thank goodness there’s a firefighter and paramedic in the house.” I smile up at Christopher, loving the way he had absolutely lit up with Carla back around. I know he had missed her and had certainly taken it hard when she had to leave to be with her dad. He was sad but also understood that she needed to be with her dad just like he needed to be with his. Looking back towards the table, I couldn’t help but notice the way that Eddie was already smiling at me. He looked at me the way that every girl wanted to be looked at. The smile that he gave me made it hard for me to not smile back. He and Christoher were my entire world and there was nothing that I wouldn’t do to keep them with me.
————
The next shift was exactly like the last one, busy and filled with paperwork. I was at the station for maybe thirty minutes in total, all day. And somehow not once did I run calls with the 118. Which meant that I did not get to see or talk to any of them, excluding Hen who had called to get advice about a call they were on, until it was time to pack up and go home for the day. Luckily, my relief had shown up early, meaning that I was able to shower and change before I normally was able to. Walking out of the dorms, I find Eddie standing at the bay door, a contemplative look on his face.
I make my over to him before asking, “What’s got you thinking so hard my love?” He looks up, startled, as if I had completely snuck up on him. He gives me one of his dazzling smiles before shaking his head.
“Just a call we went on today, something seems off but I’m not sure what it is.” he replies.
That’s understandable. I feel like most of the calls we run nowadays are just off. I had honestly chalked most of it up to being my paranoia from the crazy Covid calls we received.
“Do you want to talk about it on the way home? Maybe I can help you work it out.” I ask him.
He smiles and shakes his had before saying, “We’ve both had a hell of a day, work is going to stay at work. It’s my time to have you all to myself.”
He bumps his shoulder into mine before grabbing my hand and leading us to the car. After the shift we had, it was nice to know that no one needed us. At least for the next 9 hours that was.
At home, I had opted to start the laundry while Eddie moved into the kitchen to start dinner. Carla and Christopher were in the living room reading together when we got home. After receiving a huge hug from Chris, I started into the bedroom to collect our laundry basket. Once laundry was started, and I was in much more comfortable clothes, I made my way into the living room. Only to find it empty with voices being heard in Christophers room. Inside, Christopher, Carla and Eddie seemed to be sorting through old toys of Chris.’
“Wow, someone’s feeling generous.” I comment after finding the trio, moving to sit down on the floor near Chris’ bed.
“I got to talk to a boy that Dad met at work, he’s sick and can’t go out much. I want to give him some of my old toys.” Christopher replies. He hands over an old police car and book that I know he hasn’t played with in a while. Looking up at Eddie, he notices the hint of confusion on my face. I know we hadn’t talked much, but I hadn’t heard of his new friend he seemed to have made today.
“Did you happen to see the structural collapse call were on around lunch time?” He questions. I shake my head ‘no’ as I lean over to help go though toys.
Eddie continues on after seeing my answer, “This boy’s mom semi-fell through her balcony and her son, who’s around Chris’ age, called it in. He has an auto-immune disorder and isn’t able to leave the house much. I ended up staying with her son while she went to the hospital.”
The story quickly catches my attention. My head shoots up and can I tell my face is giving away my thoughts. It so often does as Eddie continuously points out to me.
“Would this call happened to have occurred at The Regal Point Apartments?”
Eddie looks up at me and nods, “Yeah it was, I thought you didn’t see the call? Well anyways the mom was telling me that since she has to stay home and take her of her son, people have been generous enough to donate to them through online donation sites. Chris here had the great idea of donating some of his toys to the son.”
There it is again.
There’s that red flag, waving now at the forefront of my mind. This has to be Shiela and Charlie. I think it over before standing up and telling Chris how proud I am of his generosity. “I’ll be right back.” I state to the group before exiting the room. Eddie gives me a questioning look as I leave.
————
Making my way into the kitchen, I sit down at the kitchen table, open my laptop, and begin doing some research on Sheila and Charlie Leute on a local Fund Me page. Although I began my search locally, I quickly find multiple Fund Me pages scattered across the West coast. The most interesting detail is the fact that each account with their first name ends up coming back with a different last name. The red flag initially waving in my brain is now the size of a football field. I knew it. Jumping up from the kitchen table, I walk back towards where I know the trio still sat. Leaning up against the door frame, I look over to Eddie, knowing that this would hurt his feelings.
“Hey Eddie, can I talk to you for a second?” I ask, starting to walk back towards the kitchen.
Eddie glances up at me before he stands up and starts making his way towards me. He stops short of the doorway and turns back to Carla and Chris.
“Don’t let him give away the whole house while I’m gone!” Eddie continues behind me where we start back towards the kitchen. I can hear Carla laughing at Eddie’s comment, she knows that Christopher is just that generous to do so.
“What’s going on?” Eddie questions.
“I was thinking about what you said, how that family supports themselves through their Fund Me page, so I started looking around.” I sit back down at the laptop while Eddie chooses to lean up against the cabinets. It was hard to stay focused on the task at hand when he did things like that. Something about him leaning against things had an unnecessary affect on me.
“You went snooping?” I can feel the questioning look aimed towards the back at my head. I swivel in my seat so he can see the serious look on my face. Although the hint of a smile on my face certainly doesn’t help my case. I begin fiddling with my ring finger, where my actual engagement ring sits on full display. Being able to see it and feel it helps me relax, my body already knowing how important this situation is.
“The family and story just seemed really familiar to a call I had the other night. At the same address. I was hoping for it be a coincidence but that’s unfortunately not the case. Alicia and I went out there the other night for the son and something just didn’t seem right then. I thought I was just being overdramatic, so I let it go. But I think there is something wrong with this woman. I think she lied to us”
Eddie gives me yet another confused look before pulling out the chair beside me and sitting down. He throws his arm over my shoulder and slides the chair closer to me. I can tell that he understands how strongly I feel about this just by the look he is giving me.
“Well,” He starts “you know I trust your instincts so what do you have?”

Summary: Chris is invited with the 118 to Denny's birthday party and he has a great time, until things start to overwhelm him. Then a meltdown ensues.
Enjoy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tumblr media
A smile lit up Christopher's face and he reached his arms out towards his dad, pointing up at the present that Eddie was just about to get out the boot of the truck.
"Be careful then," Eddie handed the present down to Chris, guessing that he wasn't going to be using his crutches today by the look of things.
He grinned madly and took the rather light box that rattled whenever it moved. Chris had taken the liberty to pick some dinosaur wrapping paper and he had stuck the large green bow on top of the present after he watched his mum expertly wrap it up ready for Denny. And Chris wanted to be the one to carry it in and give it to his friend on his birthday.
Hen had asked all of the team if they wanted to come over for Denny's birthday party today. She knew Chris would panic if there were a lot of other kids here who he didn't know and because Denny was very set on Chris coming along, they only invited two of his close friends from school. Chris knew everyone at the squad so he was comfortable around them and he knew Athena's son Harry who he was also comfortable around.
It was a close knit party which is just what everybody wanted and needed and Chris had been excited about this for the past three days since he found out they were coming here.
"Remember, don't tell him what the present is," (Y/n) kissed the top of Chris's head as the three of them set on a slow walk up the drive towards Hen's house. The last time Chris went to a friend's birthday, he had been very excited to give the present over but he accidentally told his friend Andrew what they had bought him. Andrew didn't care, he had laughed and still looked surprised when he opened the gift, but it was a gift and it was always nice to have a surprise present.
She felt Eddie's arm loop around her waist as they approached the door and he gently grabbed Chris's shoulder after he knocked on the door. Chris had a tendancy to try and walk in houses without or straight after knocking, he didn't quite grasp the part about waiting to be invited in. He thought it was like with his own home or his grandparents house, he could go straight in and the door would be unlocked and people would welcome him in.
"Hi! Denny will be thrilled you're all here, come in." Karen opened the door, a wide smile on her face as she ushered them inside. "Everyone's out in the garden."
They followed Karen down to the kitchen and out the back door where the noise level raised and the chaos ensued.
There were a lot of balloons tied around the fence, to the few tables outside and placed around the garden with weights to keep them from floating off into space. A banner of Happy Birthday was pinned against the fence on the right side of the garden above the buffet table.
(Y/n) could see something that would grab Chris's attention towards the back of the garden. A paddling pool. Chris was very sensory and he loved the swimming pool, if they weren't careful he would be straight in there in his clothes and they wouldn't be able to get him out. And next to the pool was a sandbox that was usually closed up but today was wide open with spades and buckets and a signpost that (Y/n) couldn't read from this far away.
They didn't get very far before Denny spotted them and it was heartwarming to see his bright smile when he realised Chris had finally arrived. Chris was the person he was desperate to be around and play with.
"You're here!" He bounded over to them, almost stumbling when Chris pushed the present out towards him with a cheesy grin and his eyes almost closed.
"Happy birthday,"
"Thank you," Denny carefully took the present and looked up at his mum who nodded and took it from him so it could be put with the rest of the presents inside for him to open later.
"It's lego."
"Chris!" Eddie tilted his head back and brought his hand up to rub his eyes, trying to smother his groan with a laugh. He knew it. He just knew Chris wouldn't be able to contain the excitement and keep the surprise. When it was his own birthday, Chris loved surprises and opening presents but for anyone else, he had a fixation on telling them what it was.
Leaning back, Chris pushed his shoulders back into Eddie's legs and tilted his head back, giggling up at his dad as he bit down on his thumb.
"Come on, mum's gonna open the scavenger hunt," Denny took Chris's hand and walked slow enough so they could trot side by side towards Hen, Harry and two other friends from school. They were all stood near the sandbox that made Chris's eyes light up.
"Scavenger hunt?" Eddie tucked his free hand into his back pocket as he and (Y/n) followed Karen over to where Athena, Bobby, Chimney and Maddie were all sat with drinks and the radio blasting music.
"Hen's buried sweets and little fidget toys in the sandbox. They'll have to dig around for buried treasure. And Buck, being the big kid that he is, has decided to help supervise them." Karen gestured to the drinks table near the rest of the team so they could help themselves to something. All of them knew that Buck would be the one to join in the games and the fun with the kids. He was a child at heart, a kid trapped in an adult's body. It was why all the kids were drawn to him and loved him playing around with them.
"One sec," Leaning over, Eddie kissed (Y/n)'s temple before he jogged towards the sand box where the kids were all eagerly looking round. They were waiting to be told when they could get in and start digging as Hen was going through the rules of the treasure hunt. "Buck,"
"Yeah?"
"Can you keep an eye on Chris while he's in there?" He pointed towards the sand, already feeling the unease washing through him.
"Don't worry, I know where all the treasure is," Buck winked and clapped his hands, he wasn't getting what Eddie meant.
"No… he's got pica and sand is sensory, he'll try and eat it if you don't watch him. It's a different texture."
Chris had been diagnosed with Pica when he was three, it was a condition that meant he would try and taste, eat or just put random things in his mouth that weren't food. He understood he couldn't eat things like sand or mud or paper but they were so sensory that he couldn't help putting them in his mouth. Chris did it for the texture, not to try and eat them or because he was hungry or desperate. It was a fixation, a sensory feeling, putting things in his mouth was Chris's way of getting a sensory fix and feeling textures.
Eddie had had a lot of arguments with Chris's last school when they didn't watch him closely and Chris started to eat the sand and either made himself sick or it came out in his nappies as a child. It wasn't safe or nice for him and he had to be watched.
When he was five (Y/n) had been doing the washing and Chris came up behind her and stuffed a handful of wash powder in his mouth because it felt grainy and fluffy and itchy. It was a bi sensory feel in his hand and he automatically put it in his mouth, then threw it up.
"I'll watch him." Buck grinned and nodded as if it was no big deal or nothing new and it made Eddie relax. The team never seemed surprised or shocked or put off when they learned about Chris's conditions, especially Buck. He took it all in his stride and he strived to make Chris comfortable and understood and help him however he could.
When Hen said the boys could start digging, Buck reached down and picked Chris up and sat him down in the left corner of the sandbox, right near a bag of sweets he knew Hen had buried there. She had planted enough so that each kid could get at least two mini bags of sweets or a little fidget toy.
"Find me some treasure," He whispered to Chris as he kneeled down on the grass beside him with Hen a few feet away, watching the other four kids.
With a smile, Chris tucked his left hand down into the sand and spread his fingers, curling his fingers to his palm and spreading them again to move the sand and get the sensory feel. He held the dark blue plastic spade tight in his other hand and started to pat and scrape at the sand until a mini pack of Haribos was uncovered.
"Uncle Buck's treasure," He giggled and tossed the pack onto Buck's lap, grinning when he turned to look over at his parents.
He could see Eddie giving him a thumbs up and (Y/n) smiled at him from where she was sat on Eddie's lap.
Tilting forward, Chris dropped the spade and rolled until he was laid on his stomach on the sand with his legs kicking out behind him. He burrowed his hands down into the sand, grabbed fistfuls and pulled his hands back up. He watched, fascinated, as the sand fell through his fingers like droplets of rain.
He grabbed some more sand and tipped his head down until his chin was perched on a mountain of sand. His lips parted in a cheeky smile and he locked eyes with Buck just as he poked his tongue over his lower lip towards the sand.
"Ah-ah, your dad told me what you're like. If you wanna try something, try a sweet." Buck held a sweet out towards Chris who kept laughing but took the bribe anyway.
(Y/n) tilted her head back on Eddie's shoulder, nuzzling her face into his neck as she looped an arm around the back of his neck while her free hand held her cup of juice. She crossed one leg over the other, trying hard to focus on the conversation but she couldn't keep track. All she could focus on was Eddie's hand that had drifted up beneath the hem of her dress and kept gliding higher and higher up her thigh.
And when she looked over his shoulder every now and then, she could see Buck laughing at Chris who was spraying sand everywhere along with Harry. It looked like all the boys had found the buried treasure they had been digging for.
"Alright, who's up for musical statues?" Hen gave a sceptical look around the team who were all sat chatting and watching the kids have their fun in the sand box.
"I'll control the music," Bobby tapped the radio that was sat next to him and caught the CD that Hen expertly tossed over to him. He wasn't so good at musical statues but he could be fair and impartial with the music and turn it on and off for the kids.
"Up, up up you lot. You can all join in,"
A few groans rumbled past their lips but all of them got up and moved towards the centre of the garden as the boys hurried over. Chris stood so he was facing both parents, stood near to Denny who was clapping and smiling in anticipation. And (Y/n) shared a look with Eddie, they both knew Chris wasn't very good at this game and he probably wouldn't try to play, he would just go along with the music.
"Okay, when the music stops, you all freeze. Anyone still moving when it stops is out. Off you go," Karen stood in front of them all, playing the role of referee as Bobby started the music.
As predicted, Chris seemed to switch off to the rules and what was happening and he went into his zone with the music.
The CD was a new pop chart with all the latest music and it was Chris's sort of thing. He held his arms out at his sides and started to shake his hands, a new stimming technique he had picked up recently. He didn't exactly move his legs or his feet but he swayed and rocked back and forth very rapidly like he was being blown about by the wind.
Every few seconds, Chris did a quick round of clapping before he went back to shaking his hands and laughing. This was his sort of party game. It wasn't often that other people danced with him and when he looked up and saw his mum and dad dancing, it made him squeal. Whenever he clapped, his mum rose her hands in the air and clapped with him and he could see his dad mumbling along to the lyrics while his hands were on (Y/n)'s hips.
Maddie and Chimney stood near them, waving their arms up and down and bending down to shimmy and sway along to the beat like they were doing a new dance routine they had memorised.
Buck was dancing with the boys and Hen, and Athena and Harry were towards the back clapping and swaying about to the beat.
As soon as Bobby paused the music, almost everyone stopped.
(Y/n) kept her arms high in the air and tried to tense her elbows so she didn't move or waver. She could feel Eddie's chest pressed up into her back and his fingertips squeezed into her hips as he tried to stay perfectly still behind her. But when both their eyes moved to lock onto their son, they grinned.
Chris was still rocking. He had his eyes snapped closed, his thumb between his teeth morphing his grin and he was almost violently going back and forth as his other hand was stimming and shaking at his side. He didn't quite grasp the rules and he didn't want to stop, he just wanted to dance and move about and have everyone laughing and dancing along with him.
"Chim, you're arm moved. You're out."
"Damn," He stomped his foot into the ground before he moved over towards Bobby to sit with a drink and watch the game plan out.
Karen looked between Chris and his parents for a second, a bright smile on her lips as she turned to check everyone else before Bobby pressed play. They couldn't tell Chris to stop dancing and sit out, he was having too much fun and he wasn't trying to play a game or win the game. He could keep dancing away and rocking in the corner, they would continue the game around him.
The music continued for a little while, Bobby timed it just right to stop the music when Harry and Athena were in the middle of their jam session and both of them wobbled on their feet before stumbling two or three paces.
They were out.
Right as the music stopped for a third time, Buck was in the middle of his dance, one leg up in the air and his arms out at his sides. (Y/n) gasped, holding her arms out when he stumbled on his back foot and fell towards her. His arms swung out, grabbing (Y/n)'s shoulder and taking her down like a domino. She slipped and felt her back knock into Eddie's legs, swiping them from under him so that he went down with them.
"I'm afraid you're all out now," Karen leaned over them with a grin and (Y/n) sighed dramatically, flopping her head onto her husband's chest.
With a manic laugh, Chris finally stopped dancing and trotted forwards until he could slump down onto Buck's chest.
"You lost Buck,"
"Have you had enough, baby?" (Y/n) tilted her head to the side as she looked up at Chris when he walked over to them.
All the boys had been sat very close to the buffet table in case they wanted seconds. They had been sat in a big circle on the grass to have their dinner while the rest of the 118 were in the chairs near the radio, finishing off their food.
(Y/n) knew Chris was a fussy eater and if he looked at the buffet, there would be too much choice for him and he wouldn't be able to choose anything, it would overwhelm him. So she had gone along the table, picking out a few tiny bits that she knew he would definitely eat and grabbed the pack of crisps from her bag she brought. He was particular on what kind and brand he would eat.
"Finished," He whispered quietly, handing over the plate so she could see he had eaten at least half of what she had put on the plate, and all the crisps she gave him.
"Good boy," (Y/n) put the plate down on the grass next to her and opened her arms so he could sit between her legs. She was sat down between Eddie's legs, her head resting on his thigh and his legs squeezing her sides lovingly. Every now and then he kept leaning down to kiss her head or card his fingers through her hair.
She curved her arms around his middle and pressed her lips to the top of Chris's head, swaying them side to side between Eddie's legs.
"You okay?" (Y/n) whispered quietly into his hair when she noticed his hands that had come up to hold her arm were twitching. He was trying to stim, he didn't usually do that when he was having a cuddle.
"Hm,"
"Mum said we can go in the pool, are you coming?" Denny hovered by the side of them, a hopeful look on his face that brightened even more when Chris grinned. He had been waiting for them to say he could jump in the pool ever since he noticed it.
"Yeah… mummy?"
Chris turned around in (Y/n)'s arms and lifted his arms towards her so she got the silent message. She smiled down at him and gently lifted his top over his head and put it down next to her bag that had all of his things in.
"You can go in your shorts baby, I've got spare clothes in the bag," (Y/n) didn't see the point in Chris taking off his shorts and sitting in his underwear when he could just get them wet and change into the spare outfit she had packed for emergencies or food disasters.
With a lasting look towards his parents, Chris swiped off his glasses and dropped them onto Eddie's lap before Denny took his hand and they headed towards the paddling pool. Eddie rolled his eyes and hung the glasses around his neck to keep them safe. The last time Chris had put them down and forgot about them, Eddie had sat on them and broke them. He wasn't making that mistake again.
Chris flopped into the water like a penguin sliding off the ice and the moment he was sat up in the water, he threw his arms out and splashed the water until it was spraying around him and bubbles started to appear between his fingers. He wasn't expecting it to be so cold but the shivers it caused and the way it made his legs jerk had him in fits of giggles.
When one of the other boys jumped into the pool rather close to him, Chris shuffled back until he was in his own little corner of the pool. He smiled when Denny handed him one of the spades from the sandbox so he could splash properly and flick the water up.
He shovelled up the water and started to stim, flicking his wrist so the water sprinkled slowly over the edges of the shovel and rained down onto his legs.
As soon as another boy started to skid and jump around the pool, Chris turned to the left so his side was pressed up into the plastic edge of the pool and he was facing away from them.
They were starting to become rowdy.
They were laughing and babbling too fast for Chris to understand what they were talking about and he didn't really want to know either. He wanted to listen to the CD playing over near his parents but even the songs sounded much too fast. It sounded like they had been sped up and the volume wasn't loud enough, he wanted it louder to drown out the sound of everything else.
He could hear beer bottles clinking together and a lot of gruff laughter and one of the boys he didn't know was shouting along to the music, ruining the song for Chris.
Chris tipped his head down and started to rock back and forth, trying to concentrate on the music he could barely hear over the loudness of everything else. His fingers tightened around the spade and his blurry eyes moved until he could see a bright green balloon a few feet from the pool.
Hen had blown up some normal balloons and put them around the garden in case the boys wanted to play with them or play throw and catch or kick them around. Chris liked balloons, he liked it when his dad would play don't let the balloon touch the floor with him and they would jump up on the sofa to hit the balloons around.
Someone popped one.
Lurching forward, (Y/n) felt Eddie's hand tighten on her shoulder and she turned around between his legs. She leaned her arms up on his thigh and pushed up between his thighs as his arm moved around her shoulders as he turned to look behind him over at the pool.
Chris didn't like loud bangs, especially not balloons popping.
"Boys, be careful please-"
"Christopher no!" (Y/n) thrust her drink out towards Buck who was sat next to Eddie before she stumbled to get up and hurry over to the pool.
As soon as another balloon popped, Chris screamed. He started to slam the spade down into the water causing waves to roll around his legs and water to sprinkle up around him. He whacked the spade down so fast and repeatedly that he started to hit himself in the knee and the thigh but he didn't care. Another scream left his lips as his eyes screwed shut and he bashed back and forth, waving his hands out at his sides.
"Baby I'm here, mummy's here it's alright. Give it to me," Reaching the pool, (Y/n) knelt down beside the edge and reached over to try and grab the spade off him, he was making his legs blotchy red and sore.
His scream pierced through her ears and when she grabbed his hand, he jerked his arm back and accidentally smacked the spade against her neck. (Y/n) leaned back, swallowing a hiss because she knew Chris didn't realise he had caught her, his eyes were still shut tight.
She pulled it out of his hand and tossed it out the way on the grass before she tried to wrap her arms around him and calm him down. She didn't want him to have a full meltdown here, not when he'd been having such a good day so far and enjoying himself. He rested his forehead against her shoulder, but only for a second before he started to thrash his head into her arm and moved his hands to scratch his nails up and down his arms.
"Come on,"
"NO!" He kept rocking back and forth and moved to kick his legs out when (Y/n) tried to pick him up.
He couldn't keep having a meltdown in the pool, (Y/n) had to get him inside so he was somewhere quieter, safer and secluded so no one could see. It wasn't fair for everyone to see him like this and it was Denny's party. But (Y/n) could already hear the music had been turned off and everyone was as quiet as a mouse. No one moved closer and all the boys got out the pool but stayed close in case there was something they could do to help.
None of the boys, or even the team, had ever seen Chris get overstimulated and go into a meltdown before.
"Eddie…" (Y/n) looked up at him with pleading eyes as her husband hurried over beside her and leaned over the pool.
"One, two, three." They carefully took an arm each and stood up, pulling Chris out of the pool and lowered him down onto the grass. "Good lad," Eddie muttered when Denny silently handed him a towel.
Eddie knelt down beside Chris and held both Chris's wrists out in front of him with one hand while he draped the towel around him with the other. Once it was tight around his body, he let go of Chris's hands so he couldn't scratch himself anymore. As soon as it was around him, (Y/n) picked him up and got to her feet. She shivered at feeling Chris scream into her neck and she could feel his nails puncturing into her back from how tightly he was clinging to her but she didn't care.
Her eyes stayed on the ground as she tried to be quick, rushing from the pool towards the house to get him inside and away from the party.
"I'm sorry, I think it's an overload, he's had too much stimulation," Eddie looked at Hen with an apologetic smile while he leaned down to grab (Y/n)'s bag so he could take it to her.
"Don't be sorry, he's not done anything wrong."
"You can turn the music back on and carry on, don't let this spoil their fun. Once he's calmed down he'll be fine." It wouldn't be fair on Denny and the boys if they kept the music off and effectively stopped the party. They were all having fun and the party wasn't over yet, they could go back to their games.
This was normal for Chris and it didn't mean anyone had done anything wrong. He had too much stimulation with the sand, the games and the water and then all the different noises and music. He needed a quiet zone to calm back down and go to normal again.
Slinging the bag on his shoulder, Eddie tried to smile at them all and waited for Bobby to turn the radio back on before he headed over to go in the kitchen where (Y/n) had gone.
"Shh, alright baby, mummy's here."
(Y/n) leaned her back up against the kitchen cupboard and bent her knees out to the sides to accomodate Chris who was curled up between her thighs. He burrowed his face into her stomach and kept his hands pressed tightly over his ears. His knees were bunched up to his stomach, the towel was wrapped around around him and (Y/n) was slowly swaying them from side to side.
"Daddy's back, look," Her hand rubbed up and down Chris's arm and she tried to nudge him to look over at Eddie who knelt down in front of them.
He rummaged around in the bag until he managed to find the dark green headphones tucked away in there. They were large oval headphones that were noise-cancelling for emergencies like this. If they were out in public and the music or the voices were too loud and overwhelming, they could slip these on Chris and he would calm down and wouldn't have to leave.
Eddie carefully nudged Chris's hands away and put the headphones on him before he tilted his chin up so he could kiss his forehead.
He dug back into the bag and found the purple dinosaur crammed at the bottom. The moment he held it out towards Chris, his eyes stopped darting from side to side and he gingerly took the teddy, pulling it into his slightly damp chest and binding his arms around it.
"There we go, all better." Eddie shuffled around from his knees to sit down on the floor just in front of them.
He spread his legs out around either side of (Y/n), caging her thighs between his and he looped his hands under her legs and lifted them up. He gave a small tug and pulled her closer until her legs were hooked around his waist and Chris was curled up between them. Chris moved down so his head was on (Y/n)'s thigh, arms still bound to his teddy and his legs splayed out over Eddie's thigh.
The shaking subsided quickly with (Y/n)'s fingers running through his hair and Eddie's hand smoothing up and down his arm, coaxing him into a rather sleepy state. He had exhausted himself.
Reaching out, (Y/n) curled her fingers around Eddie's hand, smiling up at him until he closed the gap between them and pecked her lips.
"Hey, how we doin' in here?" Hen held the door halfway open and leaned in, smiling gently down at the couple. When she peered her head a bit closer, she could see that Chris had his eyes closed and his thumb pressed between his lips. He was falling asleep.
"We're good, looks like we'll be heading home though." Eddie hadn't expected them to stay for hours today, he knew at some point Chris would either be too tired to stay or he would get fidgety and irritated and want to go home. They hadn't been expecting a meltdown, but at least it was over and he had tired himself out. They would have to suffer another bad mood later when they woke him up for his tea and bath but he would certainly be in bed earlier tonight.
"Are the boys okay?" (Y/n) tilted her head back and looked up at Hen, she felt bad for them, especially Denny, it was his party and he had to see Chris have a meltdown for the first time.
"Please, they're hyped up on cake sliding in and out of the pool. Everything's fine as long as Chris is alright. Denny's really enjoyed spending time with him."
Chris had had a good day, they would just have to be a bit more cautious next time.
PLS PLS PLS GET INTO HOW WOULD CHRIS REACT I find it so interesting, because most of the times is Chris just going "Great ! Im happy!" which valid, but honestly? I really like when it's more complex than that, like in the fic Pinky Promise by rainbow_nerds, that explores a bit the fact that Chris does in fact has abandoment issues, like I don't doubt that Chris (even angry) wants his dad to be happy, but c'moooon, his mother was his primary caretaker (because his dad left for the military, though it always hard for me to get the Diaz Timeline), then she left him, then she came back, then she died, his dad almost died at least twice (that he is aware of), Buck in the hospital, etc. Chris is going to have many complicated emotions ! I love him ! And I just wished people explored more all that potencial, you know?
i vividly remember making a diaz boys timeline back before the s7 finale but i just spent thirty minutes looking for it and i'm pretty sure i never posted it so... oops. maybe i'll make one later with the references but (apologies for the mess this is i tried to make it organized but i’m sick so there’s only so much i can do lmao):
when you look at it, buck has been consistently in christopher's life longer than shannon ever was, even if you restart after the lawsuit. shannon was him primary caregiver until he was about three, and then for a year it was eddieandshannon, after which she left. after that, it was consistently eddie. even if he wasn't around that often because he was working, he was still there, and that's what chris remembers. she came back for about half a year when he was seven, but then she died.
not counting the lawsuit, buck has been in christopher's life since he was eight. but the lawsuit wasn't that long, it was a few weeks at most, so the real answer is he's been in his life since he was seven. that's seven years at this point. to chris, buckandeddie has been a constant, more so than eddieandshannon, even if it's not the same type of partnership. and that's just a fact. sure, he'd known shannon for seven years, same as he's known buck, but technically she wasn't there for all of it. that's what he remembers.
but the same way eddie thought he needed to be with shannon romantically so as not to ruin the relationship, chris probably thinks eddie and buck need to keep the status quo not to ruin the relationship. especially when you take into his warped view of romantic relationships. shannon, ana, marisol, they all ended terribly for eddie. and buck? i'm not sure what he's told chris about his relationships, but he doesn't have a much better track record. abby ghosted him, ali left at the first sign of trouble, there was the whole jonah scenario with taylor (who actually was in christopher's life, so that definitely messed with chris a bit), tommy broke up with him seemingly out of nowhere...
it makes the most sense that chris wouldn't want them to date. if chris was home when they told him, i can imagine him calling pepa or carla, kind of a parallel to him running away to buck in s4 (which he can't do now for obvious reason). i don't think the arc would last long, i think whoever he ran to would start the conversation and tell him about an ex that they're still friends with, and then eddie would come to pick him up and they'd talk it out, there'd be a buckley-diaz scene, end of ep.
but if he was still in texas? he'd probably yell at them over the video call and then refuse to answer any calls or texts afterwards. buck and eddie would probably "break up" for an ep or two, and be absolutely miserable. this probably culminates in eddie taking a trip to texas (alone, maybe not even telling buck) and talking it out with chris, addressing their mutual fears about the relationship and eddie explaining that even if it doesn't work out, they'd still be friends, and even if that doesn't work out, buck would still be in his life, that it wouldn't be like when his mom left. there's definitely a video call to buck in this, after eddie and chris have talked their feelings out, and then chris would ask to come back home, effective immediately.
but there's also the question of how chris would react if eddie tells chris about his feelings for buck (pre-relationship). he'd probably tell eddie he can never act on it, then tell buck the same thing (without telling eddie) and then there's a few eps of buck and eddie acting distant from each other before chris snaps and says "you weren't supposed to act like you're already divorced!". of course that's if he's in la. if he's in texas it would probably play out the same way it would've if they were already together after they stopped avoiding each other and finally talked it out.
of course, they could go the easy route and have chris say "it's about time" but this is 911 we're talking about, they probably won't do that
129 for Switcheroo!
---
Eddie gapes at him.
“You retired?” He asks.
“Yes,” Ramon replies.
“Willingly?”
“Yes, Edmundo. Willingly.”
Eddie huffs out a heavy breath.
“Well,” he says after a moment. “I’m sure you must be going crazy.”
“It just happened. Two weeks ago,” his father explains. “And now I’m here.”
Now he’s here. He almost died. Eddie almost died. The world almost ended, and Ramon Diaz decided, hey, time to retire and try to fix things with his son. Eddie doesn’t know what to think. Part of him is moved, honestly. The part that always sought his father’s approval. That tried so hard to be the boy he wanted him to be. That then, spurned, tried to be anything but that man. That lost little kid in him wants to take this at face value. The father in him? Less happy. The son says, finally. The father says, how could you ever have waited this long?
“Please, son,” Ramon replies when Eddie is silent for too long. “All I’m looking for is a chance not to miss any more of your life. Or my grandson’s.”
This last comment lights a fire in Eddie.
“But you would have never known Christopher at all,” Eddie accuses. “If I hadn’t run into my son, a total stranger, in a grocery store, none of us would have ever known him. And that was a choice.”
“I know, I don’t deserve-”
“Do you?” Eddie cuts him off. “Do you have any idea? Because you missed most of your own kids’ lives, so I can see why it wouldn’t seem like a big deal.”
Ramon flinches. But he takes a steeling breath and looks Eddie in the eye.
“I… I have an excuse for one, but not the other.”
Eddie tightens his jaw and waits. Fine. He’ll listen. But he’s not going to pretend he’s happy about it.
Another deep breath from Ramon.
“For Christopher… It’s going to sound like a lie, but really, I didn’t have the same information.”
“What do you mean?” Eddie asks.
“I… I didn’t… I supported your mother, you know? That’s what you do when you’re married.”
Eddie tightens his mouth. He doesn’t need a lecture on duty.
“But I was away on business, she got the call from Shannon. When she heard about the baby. By the time she got back, all I heard was that Shannon girl got pregnant. Moved on from Eddie fast. I didn’t question it.”
Eddie can actually believe this, which  is the problem. It might be easier to know how to feel about it if he thought his dad was lying. He could just stay angry. It’s easier to just stay angry.
“Okay,” Eddie replies cautiously. “I can see that.”
“I should have behaved much differently when I found out the truth,” Ramon continues. “I shouldn’t have backed her up. I love your mother, but she was wrong in what she did. I know that. I’m sorry.”
Eddie swallows. The admission has more impact than he would have thought.
“Thank you,” Eddie says. “I appreciate you saying that.”
If he expects Eddie to apologize in return, for sending them away, for preventing them access to Chris, he won’t, though. He was right to do that. He knows that.
“I don’t have an excuse for not being there for you growing up,” Ramon says. “Or for the way I reacted when you came out to us. All I can say is that I felt… I felt like there was a certain way to do things right, and was very scared of veering off course. I’m sorry.”
Eddie’s throat feels very tight. He doesn’t really know how to reply. He knows the compulsion his father is talking about. Knows what it feels like to walk away from it. He knows it’s something he inherited. Did it just take Ramon decades longer to turn his back on it? Or is this all a charade?
“Thank you,” Eddie says again, voice hoarse.
“If there is anything I can do to make it better between us, please tell me, Eddie,” Ramon practically begs. “I’m just looking for a chance.”
Eddie takes a deep breath. “Um… I want… I want to give you a chance, I think. I just… Honestly, Dad, I don’t know how. I don’t know how to trust you.”
Ramon’s eyes flicker down to the table. He nods shallowly.
“I suppose that’s fair.”
The thing is, though… Eddie doesn’t want to be angry. He’d love for this not to be a gaping wound in him. He’s never wanted to hate them. He has always loved them, and found himself missing being loved in return. He doesn’t want to set refusal to forgive as an example to his son, in case god forbid he ever fucks up so badly it’s a question. Not that he would ever fuck up quite like his parents have. Never.
Eddie would like time and space to process this a bit better than he can right now. But that’s not the scenario he’s presented with. His father has come to apologize and ask if there’s any chance to move forward. Without his mother. Something Eddie wouldn’t have, in a million years, anticipated. So… So, it’s an opportunity. One to accept cautiously. One to measure the benefits and the risks of analytically, rather than from a place of anger. He can do that.
“I’m open to figuring it out,” Eddie says finally.
Ramon looks back up at him, hopeful.
“You are?”
Eddie nods. “It’s… It’ll take me time.”
Ramon sighs, relieved. “Thank you, Eddie. I understand.”
@eowon @rogerzsteven @devirnis and @thewolvesof1998 all tagged me in temptation Tuesday! Let's see do I have any new temptations...
Well this fic is me giving into temptation instead of writing like any of the longer more pressing fic ideas I have going ahshsh
This scene popped into my mind and I feel like I should find someplace to put it. Maybe it could go in proposal fic?
“Dad?”  Buck’s head does a little swivel around the room at Christopher’s voice. “Think he’s in the backyard, kid.”  “No-“ Chris frowns a little, coming close enough to tug on Buck’s sleeve. “I mean… Dad. Buck, Dad.” Buck blinks, once and then several times very rapidly. This morning Eddie had told him Christopher wanted to try something, smiling a mischievous little smile as he’d given him the mysterious heads up, but Buck hadn’t expected this. He swallows and tries to play it cool even as tears are forming in his eyes. “Oh- uh- Yeah?” “Can I go play Minecraft? Dennis and Leah said they were going to be online.” Chris’ face is so open and innocent, like he maybe just forgot its chore day in the Diaz house and last Buck checked he hadn’t even really started on his room yet. “Please, Dad?”  Buck’s still watery eyes narrow. “You’re a little bit evil,” he says, pointing at him. Chris just keeps smiling serenely like he’s never even heard of the concept of weaseling out of responsibilities, never even thought about emotionally bribing his poor old Buck. “Dad?" Biiiig eyes. "Can I?”  “… No?” It comes out warbly and high pitched and completely unsure.  "No to what?" Eddie comes down the hallway, wiping dirty hands on his old worn chore day jeans.  "Nothing," Chris says, innocently, beginning to giggle. He full on cackles as Buck loops an arm around him and gives him a gentle noogie. "You gremlin," Buck grins, holding the kid as he squirms. He looks up at Eddie, who's smiling down at the two of them so fondly. Dad? Buck mouths, feeling once again the sort of freefall swoop he gets in his stomach whenever he finds a new way the Diaz family have seamlessly fit him into their lives. Eddie does a little head tilt nod, smile even warmer. Then his eyebrows scrunch up and he points to Chris. What did he do? Buck shakes his head with an eye roll that does nothing to dim how happy he's sure he looks. "You gotta clean your room, child o' mine, video games later."  "Fine," Chris says, voice still laced with laughter. Buck loosens his hold to let him go get on with it, but pulls him into something more like a hug before he does. "Hey," he says, overwhelmed for a moment by how big this kid has grown. He'd been so small, a million years ago in a school parking lot after an earthquake. "I love you so much." Buck feels Chris' smile where he presses it into Buck's shoulder. "Love you too, Dad."
And then I guess every current wip is kind of tempting me from every other one... I should list 'em out and find some writing game to reblog to make you guys bully me into working on them.
summary:
Eddie shrugs. “We can just order in, it's fine.” He turns to look at Buck, mirrors his position from his spot next to the sink. “You do know you don’t have to cook every night, Buck.”
“I feel bad.” Buck admits. “I’m staying over, you buy groceries, you do laundry, you drive us to work. I wanna repay you somehow.”
Eddie shakes his head. “You’re staying over because I asked you to. I do those things because you’re my best friend and I want you to be comfortable. You don’t have to do anything to repay me.” He pauses, looks right at Buck. “You do enough by just existing by my side.”
(or, buck offers his apartment to bobby and athena, and living with eddie is easy.)
This is for my Buddie friends. My buddies, if you will.
I'm recently super in love with Eddie and Buck are already married when Buck joins the 118 and it just never comes up. Or they don't believe him. Or I don't know. It doesn't matter. Whatever the reason, the 118 fam and friends don't know that Buck is married. I've been reading fics like this recently. They're fun.
But there also aren't very many of them. So, first of all, if you have any recs, please send them to me.
Second of all, I had to come up with my own idea for something like this so keep reading to see what it is.
Trigger Warnings: canon typical violence and abuse (Maddie and Doug plus Buck), life threatening situations typical and atypical to the show, witness protection, Eddie potentially thinking Buck is dead so maybe tempory character death, and I think I'm going to make it where the Buckley parents are killed in a car accident or something. I would tag more things if I actually wrote this or anything.
So. Let's start at the beginning. Evan and Maddie Buckley are living with their parents when Doug comes into the picture. Maddie is so in love with him, it's a little concerning. At least, according to her parents. They are very adamant that she needs to stop seeing him.
She doesn't. She fights them tooth and nail to be with Doug. Her little brother Evan is torn between supporting her and agreeing with their parents. But he's young. He doesn't understand.
Sadly, their parents are killed in a car accident. Maddie fights to keep Buck and she's able to become his legal guardian. Doug becomes the dad Buck always wanted. For a while, it's good. It's great even. They're a small little family, but they're so, so happy. It's amazing.
Until it isn't. Until Doug shows his true colors. He gets so angry so fast. And might be young but he's not stupid. He knows that Maddie is hurting. So he starts acting out. When Doug is mad at him, he leaves Maddie alone. That's all that Evan cares about. If only he could do more. But for Maddie, he can at least be the one who ends up in the ER. Not her.
But Maddie can't let him keep doing this. She has to protect her little brother. They live in this horrible limbo for a few years until Evan is 18. He crashed his new bike that Doug bought for him. He's going to be so mad. He has to warn Maddie. Or maybe... maybe he can convince her to leave with him.
"You and me, Maddie. Come on. Let's go. Just the two of us."
And she wants to leave. She does. But she knows that Doug won't let them. Won't let her. But she agrees. She knows what she has to do. The next day, she watches him leave in the Jeep. She's battered and bruised, but watching him leave actually feels like a weight lifting off her chest.
Evan travels. He goes everywhere he can, trying to find somewhere he belongs. He worries about Maddie every day and sends post cards to her work so she knows he's okay. She holds onto them like a lifeline.
Evan eventually ends up in Texas. That's where he meets Eddie. Helping out on a ranch. It's hard work, harder than anything else he's done up to this point. But being there with Eddie actually makes it fun. He never wants to leave. He even gets invited over to the Diaz house where he meets a tiny little Christopher. The Diaz family is the one he always wanted. So warm and fill of love. They take him in, teach him Spanish, teach him how to make the best food. Teach him about family.
It's no surprise to anyone when he and Eddie start dating. He keeps Maddie updated through his post cards until one day he gets one in return. He recognizes her hand writing. She says she's so happy for him. And how she wishes she could meet Eddie and his son. But she also says that Buck shouldn't send her anymore cards. How Doug found one and how he had wanted to go to that place and bring Evan back home.
And, well, Evan can't do that. He needs to let Maddie know that he's okay. So every so often him and Eddie take a little road trip to send a postcard to Maddie from somewhere else. Just to let her know he's okay. Plus, him and Eddie are going to get married and she has to be there.
But on the day they're supposed to get married there's no sign of her. He's disappointed but he doesn't let it get him down. He's marrying his best friend. He's adopting a son. His life couldn't get any better.
And then, of course, it all comes crashing down. Maddie's friend at the hospital, her only friend there, calls Evan.
"Maddie hasn't been to work in a couple days. She hasn't called or anything. I'm worried about her."
Evan has to leave. Eddie wants to come with him, but Evan won't have his family anywhere near Doug. And he's coming back with his sister this time.
Long story, short, Evan goes back home to check on Maddie. She's hurt when he finds her and he's already called 9-1-1 when Doug finds them. It's ugly. And they watch Doug kill someone. One of their neighbour's I guess. And the police show up. And they're all rushed to the hospital. And they're met with even more police. And the FBI. Turns out Doug wasn't just the bad guy. He was A bad guy. A bad guy in a whole family of bad guys.
And so Buck and Maddie have to go into Witness Protection until Doug and his family are taken care of for good. Evan doesn't even get to say goodbye to Eddie and Christopher. He just gets carried away to a new place to start a new life.
Alone.
He ends up in Los Angeles, CA. He's going crazy. He can't talk to Maddie or Eddie or Christopher. He can talk to his agent. That's about it. Despite his agents better judgement, he goes out for the fire department. He's too restless to do anything else. He has to help someone. He needs to do something useful. Meaningful.
And that's how Kyle "Buck" Jones joined the 118. How'd he get his nickname? No one knows.
Title: "-you left the yarn out for sex?"
Pairing: Evan "Buck" Buckley/Eddie Diaz
Flufftober Day 19 Yarn
Tags: Established Evan "Buck" Buckley/Eddie Diaz, Implied Sexual Content, Eddie Diaz Loves Evan "Buck" Buckley, Christopher Diaz Has Two Dads, Domestic Evan "Buck" Buckley/Eddie Diaz
===========================
Eddie finds himself regretting one of his most recent decisions.
It seemed like a good idea at the time alright? Christopher was in Texas, Buck was with his ex, and Eddie was lonely (not that it didn't take everything in him to admit it).
So, he got a companion.
A cat.
That, in and of itself, wasn't bad. He just had to make sure the litter box was cleaned, get a cat tree, get cat toys, make sure food was out, and have someone drop in to take care of it if he was on a 48.
Easy, right?
No, because there's a lot more that goes into raising a cat than he thought, but it was doable, especially when his son got back and his best friend came around more often after breaking up with Tommy.
What made the whole situation bad was another recent decision being added to the mix.
Agreeing to homemade scarves.
Look, he admits he didn't quite think it through. All he knew at the time was that his newly identified feelings were reciprocated and his son was back, spurring in the best time of his life.
It's not an exaggeration either.
He's never felt so much happiness. Buck has always been like sunshine, but now that he's Eddie's sunshine, that sunshine has permeated through every nook and cranny of his life, lighting up all the shadows and dark, dusty corners that have followed him for so long.
It doesn't even matter what they're doing. They could be on a date at a fancy restaurant or even just eating takeout at home. They could be comforting each other after a hard shift or cuddling on the couch with Eddie listening to the latest information hole Buck fell into.
Anything with Buck reminds him time and time again what love and happiness really is.
(Of course, there's the sex too. He’s always enjoyed sex, but having sex with someone who he trusts with everything and can let go around of?
It's out of this world.)
Needless to say, it's been absolute bliss.
So when his boyfriend/partner/lover (he still hasn't quite settled on one term - nothing is really enough to describe who Buck is to him) brought up attempting to make them matching winter scarves?
Eddie was all for it. He doesn't even wear scarves, but if Buck makes it, he'll wear it.
…He let the bliss get to him.
“At least Ginger had the time of her life?”
He rolls his eyes, feeling a rush of affection flow through him despite the mess he’s looking at. The cat in question is napping in the cat tree in the corner of the living room, paw twitching like it's still playing. “You just had to leave your project in the living room where she could get it.”
They are well aware that cats can get into a lot of things, but Ginger, the…ginger cat, was born with a birth defect that makes it less agile and unable to get to things that normal cats would be able to get to (which is partially why Eddie loved it at first sight). Since that was the case, they just usually make sure that they put things they don’t want her to get into out of her reach.
Until this.
“As I recall, I was distracted by a very handsome man in his good jeans,” Buck says, wrapping his arms around Eddie's middle from behind him and resting his chin on his shoulder.
“Should I be worried about this handsome man?” he asks while preening on the inside, easily falling into the flirting that’s been a new staple of their relationship.
“Well, he is the most attractive, sexiest man alive who is also a very competent firefighter and a great father. He's also-
Eddie can't take it anymore, turning his head to press a kiss on Buck's cheek. “Shut up. I don't think I can go again even if I tried. Besides, you left the yarn out for sex?”
Said yarn is everywhere, strewn around by Ginger either last night after he and Buck locked themselves in the bedroom or before they finished their morning activities. It's on the couch, on the floor, near the door, dragged into the kitchen…
He sees knots too. A lot of knots.
“It was phenomenal sex, and I didn't hear you complaining when I-”
“Christopher will be back any moment now,” he reminds his partner. While they both love the flirting, sex references, and sex not-so-references, they both agreed to keep the brunt of it from Christopher, and they agreed not to start something where Christopher could see them.
The idea of his son catching them in the middle of having sex is horrifying and not something he ever wants to become a reality.
Buck huffs but straightens out at the reminder, ”I guess we should clean this up before he walks in and trips himself on accident.”
“Yeah,” he agrees, moving to see if the yarn is salvageable. “You might have to restart your project, love. I don't think you're getting anything out of this anymore.”
His best friend pouts, picking up a strand of tangled yarn on the sofa. “I was doing so well too. It was only a little lumpy!”
Eddie loves this man so much and would wear a hundred lumpy scarves for him, but a little is an understatement. Buck sometimes can't sit still long enough to finish a row and will end up forgetting what he was doing. He also (according to Buck) somehow added, subtracted, or entirely skipped loops.
He's not going to say that, of course, but, instead of lying because he'd never lie to Buck just to make the blonde feel better, he says, “A second try just means it'll be even better.”
“I guess. Or maybe this is a sign telling me to do something else for us so I can work on my knitting skills for next year.”
Eddie thinks about it. “We could. Did you have something else in mind?”
There really is a lot of yarn, he thinks as he starts gathering up the carcass of the skein (at least that's what Buck called it). He would never have imagined so much from that thing.
Buck hums, “A blanket? There are some DIY ones. We could do it together too. If you want, of course.”
Blanket huh? That reminds him of something Adriana brought up the other day when he called her.
“I wouldn't mind, but we can also order one,” he suggests. “A photo blanket.”
Surprised, blue eyes whip around towards him, “You want to do a photo blanket with me?”
“Why not?” He moves to stand in front of Buck, both of them still holding the yarn they gathered. “I'm sure about us, Buck. A photo blanket is the least of the things I'd do with you.”
The happiness shining in Buck's eyes is worth a thousand photo blankets. “Yeah. Let's do a photo blanket.”
They end up kissing in the middle of the living room, yarn forgotten and so lost in their little bubble that they don't hear Christopher coming home.
“You two are gross,” the teen says, deadpan, interrupting them. Then, unimpressed eyes wander around, taking in the mess still around them. “Buck left the yarn out.”
“Your dad’s distracting,” Buck defends himself, a reply that deserves the light smack Eddie gives him and the nose wrinkle from Christopher.
“I did not need to know that.”
“Yes, you didn't need to know that,” Eddie says, giving Buck a look. “So, guess what? Buck won't be getting to pick the photos for the blanket we're doing.”
Buck gapes at him. “Eds!”
Christopher gives them a judging brow that Buck would say is all Eddie. “A photo blanket? Lame. But I guess it's better than having yarn around for Ginger.”
Like the sound of its name from Christopher's lips is a siren (it might be considering how much Ginger adores the teen), the cat meows as it wakes up, drawing their attention.
“Ginger, let's go pick some photos,” Christopher tells it. “Before these two pick the worse ones.”
He’s not even surprised that their son is excluding him, too, even as Buck sputters, “Chris!”
The teen rolls his eyes, amending, “Or it'll be a blanket of just me and Dad.”
That shuts Buck up even as Ginger saunters over to Christopher as they start heading to his room, carefully navigating through the yarn on the floor.
“Oh,” his partner breathes when the door to the teen's bedroom shuts. “This is so much better than the scarves.”
Eddie grins, pressing a quick kiss to Buck's lips. “And it doesn't come with yarn carnage.”
“Yeah. No yarn carnage. We should get a blanket every year instead.”
They will. They will get one that year. They will get one next year when they get engaged and married, having the only proper wedding the 118 has had despite it being a small affair. They will get it the year Christopher first leads his high school robotics club to a championship. They will get it the year surrogacy succeeds and they have their first baby. They will get it for many many years to come.
For now, though, they really have to clean up this disaster caused by a cat and yarn.
Several Sentence Sunday
Tagged by the lovelies @anewkindofme and @im-overstimulated-and-im-sad
This is from my upcoming 9-1-1 early 2010s Alternative Universe Fan-Fiction.
It is going to be called "don't have to be sorry for leaving and growing up" from the song Matilda by Harry Styles
Where Buck, Eddie, Shannon and baby Christopher runaway from home to California. Buck and Eddie join the fire academy and soon after the 118, Shannon is studying to be a therapist and they are all roommates barely, adults at eighteen years old and raising Chistopher and coming into adulthood together.
There will be bi Buck, demisexual Eddie and bi Shannon and yes I will being making them neurodivergent .
--
don’t have to be sorry for leaving and growing up
Made a mood-board too, look how cute teen Buck, Eddie and Shannon and baby Christopher are.
Tumblr media
It is June of 2011. Public schools across the nation of The United States are all out for summer vacation from Hershey, Pennsylvania to El Paso, Texas.
Evan Buckley, Buck is the blonde, blue eyed rascal. He is always getting himself hurt and in trouble. He was on the football team and got straight As. He made a lot of friends but never got close enough to let his walls down. He is the baby of the family but the only person who ever pays attention to him is his big sister Madeline, Maddie Buckley. He does not know what he wants. He just wants to be happy and be loved and find his passion and stability.
Edmundo Diaz, Eddie is the young teen dad who got his best friend turned girlfriend pregnant. He is the middle child and is the only boy in his family. He was the sanest compared to his sisters which, pulled away the attention of the fact he struggled a lot in school. He excelled in other areas like sports and arts and a lot of hands-on things until this past year. He just wants to be left alone in peace with his best friend and baby boy.
“Edmundo, how could you let this happen? You and Shannon are still kids. You cannot even take care of yourselves. How are you supposed to take care of a baby?”
Shannon Macdonald is the young teen mom and upcoming psychology major freshman at University of California, Los Angeles. She wants to be therapist when she grows up and hang out with her best friend and baby and start a new life and make new friends and find new interest away from all this chaos and stress. She is the best friend of Eddie Diaz and mother of Christopher Diaz and in another state for college orientation. When she gets back to Texas, Eddie and she are going to try to talk like mature grown adults about what they are going to do without his insane overbearing family. She thought maybe she bring them with her. They can stay with her mom until they can afford a cheap apartment.
They say if you want to be treated like an adult act like an adult. How are supposed to act like an adult at eighteen years old, haven’t been out of high school even a month, being dragged home by the cops and being scolded at the front door or being at by your parents yelled in your childhood bedroom to the point of tears and clutching your clutching your worn-out stuffed animal dog or getting into screaming contest with two middle aged adults to the point your voice gives out and wanting your mom to make it better.
“You’re too soft! You need to grow up!”
“You’re too soft! You need to grow up!”
“You’re too soft! You need to grow up!”
Sometimes this makes you want to run away.
Fic Writing review 2023!
I was tagged by: @just-my-latest-hyperfixation @aidaronan @exhuastedpigeon @jamespearce9-1-1 @theotherbuckley @aspecbuddie @thewolvesof1998 @daffi-990 (And possibly others, i may have missed one or two, sorry if i did!)
I can't believe 2023 is over, honestly. This year has had some ups and downs for sure but overall I'm so proud of what I've achieved. I started the year mainly writing Stranger Things fics, and while I still love that fandom and all of the wonderful people I met there, my inspiration for writing it was beginning to fade.
And along came 9-1-1. I am so happy with where I've ended up, and for all the new friends I've made since I found this show back in April!
Here's an overview of my year in fic:
Words posted to ao3: 235,060
Words written: 250,465
Works posted: 38
Fandoms posted for: 3 (Stranger Things, 9-1-1, MCU/Captain America)
Specifics and tags are under the cut!
Longest fic:
Crawling on Back to You 109k words, 30 chapters Stranger Things, Steve/Eddie, Rated E
Shortest fic:
Keep on Walkin' and don't look back 521 words Stranger Things, Steve/Eddie, Rated T
Top 5 by kudos:
1. Right in front of your eyes
9-1-1, Buddie, 15k
He and Chris, and Buck. They work, they’re a unit. Why should it matter that he’s single? Buck is watching him, like he’s reading every thought on his face. “You’re already planning to lie about the date. Why don’t you just tell her you met someone yourself?” Eddie shrugs and tilts his head to the side, squinting in thought. “She won’t set me up on dates if she thinks I’ve got someone,” he muses. “But she’ll want to meet whoever it is.” “So... Introduce them?” Or: Buck offers to fake-date Eddie so Pepa will stop setting him up on dates.
2. Pinky Promise
9-1-1, Buddie, 1k
Christopher Diaz doesn't mind that his dad's dating someone new. He's not dumb, he knows there's someone. The way his dad has been smiling lately, the way Chris catches him staring at his coffee, daydreaming like he isn't a grown man. The sleepovers Chris is suddenly allowed to go to on almost a weekly basis. Chris is happy for him, really he is. He’s just not planning to let himself get attached to whoever it turns out to be, just in case. He doesn't need a step-parent, because he has Dad, and he has Buck, and that’s enough. Whoever his dad dates, well. They'll probably leave, eventually. Chris doesn’t need to worry about them. Or: Eddie and Buck come to Chris with some news, and he doesn't take it very well at all.
3. Peek-A-Boo
Stranger Things, Steddie, 1k
Eddie tried not to stare. He really tried. He didn't notice at first, too preoccupied with the tub of pringles he'd been making his way through while talking about Corroded Coffin's last gig. Sure, he'd noticed the shorts. The ridiculous amount of leg Steve was showing, the way they hugged his ass, but it wasn't until Steve moved, lifted one foot to rest on the cushion, knees spread, that Eddie noticed another feature of the shorts. Or: Steve puts on a bit of an accidental show.
4. Definition
9-1-1, Buddie, 2k
It keeps happening, time and time again. People get it wrong. Whatever people say, it feels wrong and they don't know how to set the record straight, until Chris takes it into his own hands. or: 5 times people get Buck's role in Chris's life wrong, and 1 time they set the record straight
5. take my hand (knot your fingers through mine)
9-1-1, Buddie, 4k, written with @pock-o-pea
At least Buck’s okay. He’s outside, safe, doing his job. Buck’s okay, which means no matter what happens inside this van, If the crushing weight of the fridge takes him before Buck can get to him, if the van pancakes or flips or any number of likely disasters occur, if Eddie dies in here, alone, and in pain, then… He thinks of Mallory, of Jo. How they’d called out for each other. His eyes shut briefly as Mallory’s words echo in his head. “She’s not my daughter. Jo’s mother was my best friend… she saved me so many times.” Or: what 6x18 could've been
Sunday Tease - watermark
It's a snow day, so the most I've accomplished today is playing a video game, reading a book and shoveling. Happy Sunday, loves. 😊 hopefully this will tide you all over until Friday
*-*-*-*-*
“Mom, dad,” she called their attention. “This is Eddie, he’s Bu-Evan’s partner.”
She felt like she was sitting between two prey animals, offering up another in hopes that it would quell their aggression. Her parents had always been about keeping up appearances, they wouldn’t do anything too crazy with Chimney, Albert and Eddie there. It wasn’t like they had just her and Buck locked in a room. It wasn’t like she was facing them alone, head on, with her chin in the air. Take that attitude down a peg, Maddie, her mother would say, it’s not like we’ve ever hurt you. Not physically at least. Never intentionally. “Eddie.” Philip hummed and held out his hand for Eddie to shake with his own. “Is that short for something?”
Maddie had a moment to think that Eddie wasn’t going to shake it at all. He merely stared at it, stared at her father, and then slowly reached up to grasp it with his own with an awfully polite and short, “I don’t see why that’s important.”
Margaret’s eyes widened in what was either insult or delight. Maddie wanted to smack herself in the face. She should have told Eddie what to do and what not to do with them, the right things to say, the right ways to go about things. They were like sharks and Eddie had just bled in their water. “Well, a name’s a gift.” Margaret responded brightly, her arm reaching out to link with Buck’s and pull it tightly into her chest. He winced and rubbed at his birthmark (Maddie hadn’t seen that particular display of nerves since she had been in LA), sharing a look with her through his lashes. “Your parents gave it to you for a reason, you might as well use it.”
“With all due respect, ma’am, I wouldn’t presume to know why my parents did anything.” It was funny, when Eddie had been angry with Maddie, he had been coldly blunt. He had still sounded like the Eddie Diaz she had first met in Buck’s old apartment, flirting with her brother with Christopher at the kitchen table. She forgot, sometimes, that he was from Texas at all - his accent wasn’t thick, and Eddie had manners but they weren’t the stereotypical Southern Charm manners her parents had taught her to expect. But, apparently, his accent came out when he was tense because it was more drawl than she had ever heard from him, particularly on the ma’am.
“It’s, uhm,” Buck stammered. “He just goes by Eddie.” He finished lamely.
Margaret let him go with a huff. “I just think it’s a little silly,” she laughed. “Imagine being so pressed about a name.”
“Imagine.” The meaning wasn’t lost on Maddie, she was pretty sure it wasn’t lost on anyone and she didn’t know if Eddie was being intentionally confrontational or if he was doing it just because he would have responded the same in any manner to anyone trying to pry information out of him. She had never considered him a particularly forthcoming man, but he apparently had never bothered to keep her out to the degree he was holding her parents away from him.
Eddie was playing a game he wasn't going to win and Maddie didn't have the breath in her lungs anymore to warn him. Their father smiled like a shark, all teeth. “I see your son isn't with you. How did the custody case rule?”
Eddie froze, his smile a crack against his face. Maddie could hear ringing loud in her ears. Buck breathed in a deliberately slow breath and Chimney blinked, shocked, at the implication in Philip’s tone. “Chris is at a friend's house tonight.” Buck supplied seamlessly when it became obvious that Eddie couldn't answer. Wouldn't answer. Maddie wasn't sure. “We made plans for him before we knew you were coming.” He rubbed at the back of his neck. “Sorry.” He tacked on unhelpfully to the end in a mumble.
Note
i really loved how pepa was all "marriage, who said anything about marriage?" when that was immediately where eddie's head went about one fix-up. and pepa was basically like "i just want you to have someone to run errands with on your saturdays". lol (i wonder who that could be eddie)
anyway, i love hearing your thoughts so i was wondering what you thought about eddie immediately connecting dating to marriage and kind of panicking about it? where's his head at with that?
Oh, I love this question, I'm kissing you on the forehead for asking this, nonny.
So, as with all things Eddie Diaz, because he is a funny funny repressed queer little man who should be studied under a microscope, the answer is: it's complicated, and there are Layers.
On the absolute most surface level, I don't think it's an unreasonable logical leap in cultural context to assume if your family is setting you up it's not so you can have a casual fling, it's with an end goal of getting you married off.
Diving a little deeper, I think he also jumps to marriage because Serial Monogamist Eddie Diaz simply has zero conception of or experience with casual dating and non-serious relationships. And also, I think in his heart of hearts, what he wants (but is afraid of having) is a serious relationship. He wants a great grand forever love with a real romantic life partner! And "marriage" is the state that's traditionally emblematic of that, a serious, legally-binding commitment to share your life with someone. (And his heart already knows there's a specific person he wants as his partner, even if it's a little unclear what his head knows at the moment, so at least some of the kneejerk reaction against letting in anyone new is that he's taken).
But. Again, it's complicated. Because "marriage" for Eddie is...fraught.
On a still deeper level, that leap for me ties back to Christopher. It has to. Because all of the what-ifs of Eddie's life, the FOMO, the unanswered questions about who he is or could be...they all lead back to him. (Catch me screaming forever about Christopher's "the things that make you sad, am I one of them?"). And it's pointed that we know so very little about Eddie's life before Christopher, about his hopes and dreams, the kind of life he wanted for himself, the kind of man he wanted to be, but at the same time the little we do know, especially in the context of this arc is loud.
Because the only thing we know about Eddie and relationships pre-Christopher is Shannon. And while we don't know how Eddie and Shannon's relationship was before everything fell apart, while we never got to see it, it's implied at least that before she got pregnant, before they got married too young and too soon, their relationship worked, they were happy, they were in love. One of the few things Eddie says explicitly, unequivocally, about her/them/his feelings from back then, is "I knew I loved her, but I didn't think I was ready to get married." But he did. Because of Christopher.
For Eddie, being a husband and being a father are two sides of the same coin. They're states that were inherently connected in his early life, they're roles that carry so much weight, so many responsibilities, expectations, pressure to perform. They're roles that he was forced to take on before he was ready, and his fear of failure, his performance anxiety, became a self-fulfilling prophecy.
There's really something to the idea that Eddie and Shannon both lost themselves when she got pregnant. That both of them fell into the trap of letting the people they were be erased, so that he could no longer be Eddie, but Christopher's dad and Shannon's husband, and she became Christopher's mom and Eddie's wife, and because they lost themselves, they also lost what they had together before, and hurt each other. He ran away, and then she did, and where once they had uncomplicated young love, they were left with broken hearts, broken trust, guilt, shame, grief...and all of that is connected with Marriage. Doubly-so for Eddie, because he came back and learned how to be a father, how to get comfortable with that so he was no longer just playing a role he wasn't ready for, but when he decided that he was ready to step in and open himself up again and be a husband for real...Shannon was the one who asked for a divorce. And her entire point was that she needed to do exactly what he did, she needed to get comfortable with being a mother before she could also be a wife, lest she risk failing at both, but all Eddie took away from that was that she was rejecting him as a romantic partner, as a husband specifically, that there was something wrong with him, and because she died so soon after that, he never got the chance to get clarification, to realize that he was capable.
Eddie + Fear is the big theme swirling around his development in general, but his love life in particular (similar to Buck + Death). He's allowed fear to control his whole life. Fear of not fitting what he thought he had to be leading him to smother his individuality when he became a husband and father. Fear of failure leading him to join the military and run to the other side of the world. Fear of being hurt again leading him to keep Shannon at arm's length. Fear of not giving Christopher what he needed leading him to get involved with Ana even though he knew he wasn't ready (and literally said as much!). And now fear of the unknown and also fear of the same rejection and heartbreak and pain he felt with Shannon (both within their relationship and because of her death) keeping him from admitting what and who his heart really wants now...
Anyway, this massively got away from me, but...yeah...Eddie + Love, Eddie + Fear, Eddie + Marriage, all tying together in one lovely journey of queer adult self-discovery. It's Something.
