I would like to say thank you for Christine Wada for deciding Ed Teach's signature look would include cute lil crop tops. She didn't have to do that but she did and now we are ✨blessed✨. Thank you for sharing your vision with us, queen.

hannahgreenecostumes: This time 2 years ago we were wrapping out @ourflagonmax Season 1! We made SO MANY costumes, and with block shooting/last minute casting there wasn't never a down moment because we were always rushing to catch up. It was the hardest show I've worked on, but here is an upbeat throwback reel where everything looks easy and fun! 🐈💔🏴☠️

the wigs and costumes in s1 were already great, but they stepped it up even more in s2, not only by quantity. we have multiple close up photos of edward and you absolutely cannot tell that taika is wearing a lace front. the wee john drag look? slay. stede's little sparkly red number - fabulous. ed's and stede's new piercing? gay. everything about anne bonny? even more gay.
izzy's fucking unicorn leg? completely feral and i love them for it.
Christine Wada does a phenomenal job of bringing both historical fashion, leather badassery and the queerest looks imaginable on the high sea
(and apparently Gypsy Taylor is involved/takes over in s2 which is additionally exciting)

Everyone should look up Jean-Pierre Dorleac, he was the costumer for the original Battlestar Galactica, Quantum Leap and a bunch of other stuff. Look up interviews, podcasts, check out his book The Naked Truth. He worked very hard for Quantum Leap, remember that when shows had 20 episodes and he had to dress everyone. He was sure to be accurate and get vintage pieces. And of course he made Dean Stockwell's Al a fashion icon.
I'm still not impressed with Christine Wada. Loki's new suit and tie is not anything unique to Loki. It's a beige-y brown button up and jacket. Anyone could wear that. Someone could walk down the street in that and no one would look twice. For a character like Loki who was recognizable by his silhouette to have him put in such bland clothes is so disheartening. Loki is not allowed to have any personal touches.
I don't think the final outfit is necessarily bad, but it still feels boring. They can say it's meant to be "humble" but results of that is that is it looks bland and boring.
Mayes C. Rubeo doesn't always hit but she always tries. Remember she also had to get costume from several decades when she worked on WandaVision and at least she got red clothes for Wanda wardrobe.
‘Loki’ Costumes season 2 – review (critical)
Accidentally bumped into information that the ‘Loki’ series are nominated for Costume Designers Guild Award 2024. Then watched an official Marvel Studios video about hidden details in Loki’s costumes season 2. And – WTF?
In general, the impression is like the creators thought ‘this fine actor will make even this shit work’. I mean, ‘Loki’ designer Christine Wada announces ‘a new tie and a new coat’ in season 2 as smth really great and unexpected. Well, after a prison jumpsuit and a torn and bloodied shirt of the 1st season, yes – this is really new!
She brags about authentic costumes from 1970s and 1890s, but I think there’s not much to boast about. I mean, the designers of ‘Thor’ 2011 had much more work to do – to create Norse-fantasy-styled costumes based on ridiculous comic pajamas from scratch. And they nailed it! And they won the award – absolutely deservedly! Here… well, some suits. Yes, some work is done, but still – they’re just suits (not even that pretty). Nothing award-worthy. The frilly 70’s-styled shirt he’s wearing is outright ugly. If you’ve seen ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’, maybe you remember a second-hand robe Ron’s wearing to the Yule Ball. Same shit.
I was surprised to learn about gold embroidery on Loki’s final drapes costume. In shitty lighting of the scene I failed to notice any details. ‘Loki’s final transformation reimagines his godly form with a new humility’ – why doesn’t Thor get to wear drapes in ‘Thor’ 2011 after becoming worthy and humble? Odin wears a gold armour – why isn’t he humbled with plain drapes? Huh? Why is only Loki… ah, yes, it’s Loki. Silly me, I forgot. Everyone deserves a beautiful costume, but not him. Also, why horns are not gold??? They’re always gold!
In general, his new costume is dull – no interesting eye-catching little embellishments, no distinct colours. I mean, look at Wanda’s new costume, at Sam’s. Heck, even Thor’s. Loki’s new costume is just for any other character – nothing speaks about Loki here. Nothing Norse, just simple and plain. And ‘simple and plain’ isn’t supposed to be about Loki – any kind of Loki, myth, comic or MCU.

The Widow Bonnet and Annie Hall
(a repost of my 5-15-22 Reddit post for posterity)
So, the first time we see Mary as The Widow Bonnet, her wardrobe has changed significantly. While living with Stede, she dressed in fairly conventional, vaguely 18th century clothing. After her emancipation, we see her wearing clothing that leans very heavily toward a more modern menswear aesthetic: darker, textured suiting fabrics, plain shirts, and ties. Her looks immediately made me think of Diane Keaton's iconic style, which is so famously highlighted in the movie Annie Hall. After a long search through the snippets of showrunner interviews and the costume department Instagram posts/comments and failing to find any reference to inspiration for Mary's costumes, I decided to make the case myself.
After tracking down a number of screenshots of Mary and Keaton, I am more convinced than ever that Christine Wada was inspired by Keaton and Annie Hall in particular. It makes sense as a source of inspiration: Annie starts out the movie uncertain, lacking confidence, allowing herself to be steered by the man she is dating, following a path chosen by someone else. Later, she gains confidence, independence, and thrives on her own while pursuing a career as an artist (singer). Diane Keaton famously styled her own character for that film and has maintained a signature look incorporating a lot of the same cues throughout her life: menswear in a neutral palette, often slightly oversized or loosely tailored pieces, including ties, waistcoats, and blazers. Mary seems to have a very similar aesthetic in her post-Stede life, which tracks with her journey--coming into her own ON her own and reveling in her independence. Mary is absolutely thriving when Stede returns, and like Annie, she isn't going to be drawn backward and subsumed into her old relationship or patterns.
The vest and tie signature look:
You cannot possibly argue that anything about this is coincidental:
These looks are less direct, but there's an obvious through line:

Sad thing is Loki's costume really aren't that dramatic. At least not when compared to the intentional silly costume that Classic Loki is in.
"ffs this is so obviously a lie to retroactively try to justify how the show was made in bad faith and stripped Loki of everything ~"
Definitely seems like an excuse made up after the fact. Looking at parts of the art book I find myself questioning that because some pictures really seem like they weren't made until after the show wrapped. They are so obsessed with putting Loki in that awful suit the apparent new costume he'd get at the end they wanted to take elements of the TVA suit, it's crazy.
See that,Loki fans? You never cared about Loki according to series costume designer. You were for years distracted by his costume.
Sorry I cant see his emotions.
Armour is all I see.
