I always view Mortimer views himself as a machine, if he join's a society he thought he would be useful or even important but he got rejected multiple times. At this point, He views himself as nothing but a broken machine, an abandonned tool, waiting for nothing to be biting the dust slowly for the next millenia. Until Howard came into his life; said it's okay to be broken as long as he is with him, and his friends. It's okay to be flawed, it's okay to be "himself" once in a while and it's okay to cry. His real emotions came pouring in from a Summer day as he feels Howards love warms his Heart. I recomend to gave a listen to this song and look at the translated lyrics. Another interesting thing this song does is showcase the distinction between 心 (kokoro) and 心臓 (shinzou), a concept that doesn't really translate that well into English. They both mean "heart," but 心臓 is the physical heart while 心 is the emotional/mental heart. When the lyrics say "I only have one heart," they are referring to 心臓. You may notice that the title has "kokoro" in it. The kanji it uses, 心做し, means "somehow" or "somewhat," but, interestingly, 心無し (without a heart) is pronounced the same way!
