One thing that's bugged me a bit about a lot of discourse I've seen following the assassination of the United Healthcare CEO is how people talk about coverage denials, step therapies, etc. like they were personal failings of UHC, as though the solution is "United Healthcare should be more benevolent" instead of "healthcare should not depend on corporate benevolence". Like yes, UHC denies more claims than most insurers, and that is terrible and people who choose to work for them should be ashamed of this, but also we should all want to live in a world where if you have an expensive-to-treat medical situation you aren't relying on a for-profit corporation agreeing to pay tens of thousands of dollars for it.

For the longest time I thought the concept of "DIY HRT" was like. synthesizing and compounding your own testosterone in your basement. and not just simply going and buying it online w/o a script. dosages are pretty standardized and if you have the money to get your own labs done it's not complicated at all. AND you're not beholden to doctors and insurance companies putting caveats and limits on how and where you can access your own hrt. Obviously people don't like telling others it's okay to diy your own medical treatments but when it comes to medical treatments needing close monitoring by a medical professional, HRT is actually fairly simple. Just take thought about your dose and test your levels at least enough to know nothing is seriously wrong or imbalanced. If it's between DIY and not getting hormones at all, imo the risks don't outweigh delaying or stopping your transition against your will. It's your body, it's your transition. The only person who will be living with the consequences of your transition will be you and you deserve to have full control of how and when it happens, not insurance companies, not your doctor, and not your pharmacy.
