Chongqing Monorail, China: The Chongqing Rail Transit (Branded as CRT) is the rapid transit system in the city of Chongqing, China. In operation since 2005, it serves the transportation needs of the city's main business and entertainment downtown areas and inner suburbs. The Chongqing Rail Transit is a unique transit system in China. Two lines use heavy-monorail technology, leveraging the ability to negotiate steep grades and tight curves and rapid transit capacity. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liziba_station
Liziba is a monorail station on Line 2 of Chongqing Rail Transit in Chongqing municipality, China. It is located in Yuzhong District and opened in 2005. The station is located on the sixth to eighth floors of a 19-story residential building. It uses specialized noise reduction equipment to isolate station noise from the surrounding residences. Contrary to some misreporting, the station and building were constructed together as one whole structure. The monorail was not retrofitted through the middle of an existing structure.

Worldbuilding | More on Lagoon City
Geography
Lagoon City, is built on an artificial foundation roughly on the northern area of the Negombo Lagoon, which leaves the Southern part of the lagoon out of the City's boundaries.
Since this is a coastal city, and Night City's geography is centered on the californian coast, I want to draw parallels here.
Firstly, the Lagoon City is a coastal metropolis, if I haven't already stated this before. Given its location right below Negombo's fishery harbor, the city had usurped/seized access to this major harbor.
Lagoon city being built on reclaimed land shares a similarity with Cyberpunk's Night City, where it also expands over Del Coronado Bay. Both their foundations rely heavily on man-made land, which could make them vulnerable to rising sea levels and putting them at lethal range of environmental degradation
Environmental Challenges
Being built on reclaimed land, Lagoon City faces coastal erosion, flooding risks, and pollution. It will additionally will come to deal with acid rain, given its carbon footprint.
Corporate greed and flimsy environmental regulations are what will define Lagoon City, so it suffers from industrial waste dumping, water contamination, and artificial land instability.
Economic Power & Tax Haven Status
Lagoon City's operation as an independant entity in Negombo, and its tax haven status means it has a level of autonomy from Sri Lanka's government and jurisdiction.
Vertical Expansion & Urban Density
Lagoon City was built to structurally be as efficient as possible, making use of vertical expansion. Densely built, and its towering skyscrapers defining the skyline, Lagoon City has opted to prioritise vertical urbanisation due to its limited space.
Port & Trade Influence
Lagoon City is a growing trade hub, using its harbor and industrial zones for shipping, and potentially leveraging its lagoon and maritime access for commerce and smuggling.
Infrastructure
Since Lagoon City was built roughly after the 2040's, I plan on taking inspiration for the city's infrastructure design from the architecture present in Cyberpunk 2077's Night City - A multitude of different aesthetics, namely: Megabuildings & Corporate monoliths, Neo-Kitsch, Kitsch, Entropism, and Neomilitarism.
The megabuildings: These are massive self-contained skyscrapers functioning as entire communities. They're imposing, ultra modern and sleek. Often houses corporate offices and high-end designer residences. These will be found in clusters at the North and South of the city, all interconnected by a high-speed monorail. Neo-Kitsch: Very flashy and excessive. They include colorful designs equipped/made possible by neon-lighting and holograms. These types of buildings will be common place in Lagoon City. Kitsch: They're bright and flashy, and often times DIY-styled architecture polluted by graffiti and advertisement boards. Since Lagoon City is made for the elite, I would like to keep this style of buildings to a minimum, to reinforce the fact that it is a high class area. Entropism: They're brutalist, function-over-form, decaying buildings made temporarily and abandoned after the city neared its completion. They're structures built with necessity in mind over aesthetics and have housed the investors in the City's conception days. These buildings will be kept to a minimum. Neomilitarism: Dark and glass heavy, intimidating structures reflecting corporate power. They will be present in and around zones where corporates have more leverage like the outskirts of the city center
One thing I want to add is that Lagoon City's design is quite vertical and layered, much like the vertical, bustling city of Chongqing in China, where the city has levels upon levels, making it easy for a visitor to easily get lost without proper guidance.
I want Lagoon City's status to reflect that of the chaotic city in Cyberpunk 2077, being a bustling metropolis where the super-rich and impoverished somewhat coexist, though what I had in mind was that the populace consists mostly of the elite class rather than the impoverished. I want to keep the impoverished to a minimum to show that this city was meant solely for the rich to frolick.

Chongqing is an expanding municipality located at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers in southwestern China. The city has a population of 33 million, and there is a metro that passes through an apartment building.
Since the city is surrounded by mountains and hills, engineers had to come up with a transportation solution, and they built a metro station (named Liziba Station) inside an apartment block.
Contrary to other reports, the monorail was not built into the structure after the fact; both projects were designed in parallel.

monorails have their uses such as in areas with steep grades (ex. chongqing metro) but outside of a few specific use cases they fall flat pretty fast
Should there be more monorails/is it feasible to build more monorails?
It's feasible but in no way a good idea, light rail is just more versatile and cheaper to build
#i also have my opinions about light rail but that’s neither here nor there#my relationship with light rail is very complicated

So something like this:

Apartment buildings poised over the lip, with elevator down to the steep incline. Neighbourhoods built on said incline (see: San Francisco). Villages around the outer area, with woods around the edge. A city at the centre built up on a few levels (see: Chongqing), with cable cars on the ground level and monorail above for the higher levels. Tunnels for cars and trains to leave, and a *lot* of drainage, which still doesn't help the flooding problem in the residential area at the centre, which is a shame because it's colder down there.
Dimensions: at least 10k diameter and at least 700m deep, creating a kind of poppy shape.
RIP me, I just remembered the time (about a decade ago, now, for reference!) when I tried to write a whole story about what would happen if my hilly hometown rebuilt after being bombed into a crater, and I had to put it away because I couldn't make the worldbuilding work 😭
#writing#original writing#sheer vale#cosmic horror#gothic horror#this crater should not be a city#let it be a mass grave like nature intended#sketch not to scale
