Just natural. It happened so slowly without either of us realizing it.

Recently finished watching Reply 1988 for the third time and had a few thoughts -

1. Jung Hwan is a well written nuanced character. Hence, when I came on Tumblr and saw people characterise Duk Seon and Taek's relationship as sibling like, I was slightly annoyed. Actually, no, VERY annoyed because have we watched the same show? The thing w JH is that he's a character who loves quietly. He has been show to care for all the people he holds dear. From helping Taek open his chopsticks to writing his mother's name in English on her passport, to even checking on his friends (unlike Sun Woo who only cared about one thing at a time whenever the plot needed him to) - Jung Hwan cares deeply. He showed a genuinely sensitivity. Which is why it sucks even more that that didn't come through for Duk Seon. We as the viewers were familiarised with his love for DS. He stayed up late waiting for her, used himself as a shield in the crowded bus, got her the gloves, and gave her his umbrella. Sweet. Really is. There's no doubt he loved her. However, when you love someone, loving them loudly, openly, and making them feel that love is just as important as loving them quietly. Jung Hwan never openly celebrated DS. When him and Sun Woo are discussing girls and DS crops up, Jung Hwan is quick to describe her as a pretty girl among the uglies. Whenever she asks him for an opinion on her appearance (esp after her friends tell her that he likes her), he dismisses her or slights her, before giving a small smile visible only to us, the viewers. Even when Duk Seon develops feelings for him or reciprocates it, he holds back. Yes, by this time, Taek has revealed his feelings for DS before their friends. However, between Taek and JH, JH had the most access to Duk Seon. He literally lived above her house. And even before Taek's admission, Jung Hwan continued to pine and hold back, esp after the concert or when they were in Taek's room cleaning up. And in the six year time skip, Taek is quick to drive to the theatre where Duk Seon is waiting and shivering in the cold (because her date is a cheating shmuck) even though he knew Jung Hwan had feelings for her. Take cared for Duk Seon in a way that didn't hinge on her reciprocation. He always complimented her, doted over her, and was the happiest around her. At that point, when he met DS, his focus was just seeing this girl happy (he forfeited his match, for god's sake. Choi Taek, passionate baduk player forfeited his match just to be w Duk Seon). Jung Hwan, for all this positives and softness of heart, cared too much about being perceived a certain way by his friends. His loyalty to Taek came before him falling his heart. And nothing wrong with that I guess. But when it comes to love, hesitating over displaying affection is often a sign that maybe the love wasn't quite all there, especially considering Duk Seon at one point reciprocated. The birthday shirt fiasco was a case in point (the one w the pink shirt where she thought JH gave her gift for him to Jung Bong but that wasn't the case but JH didn't clarify the misunderstanding - though that level of silence feels more like the writers fumbling w JH's character).

Jung Hwan loved and cared deeply. But Duk Seon deserved someone who loved and cared for her deeply and let her know about it. And not just knowing, but also doesn't hesitate to make her feel it. She, like everyone else, deserves a love that's obvious.

My heart goes out to all the second leads in every K-drama I see, who are perfect and almost always liked by everyone, but end up heartbroken and have to live with the pain.

Sometimes, the circumstances to move on becomes even complicated when the persons concerned have a close-knit relationship besides the romantic angle.

One such classic example was Kim Jung Hwan - Sung Deok Sun - Choi Taek. In my opinion, the three of them were lovely people in their own ways and there is not even a competition between the two guys, or who deserves her. I believe (and quote Jung Hwan) that the timing and the hesitation of our shy boy Jung Hwan led to Choi Taek getting ahead of him. And at that time, Deok Sun also developed feelings for Taek.

But that does not justify or compensate for the pain Jung Hwan went through (probably goes through) because he loved her. Always. As long as he could remember. And the worst part is, he probably loves and cherishes Taek even more. Which is why the heartbreak is painful.

It would take a long time for him to move on because he has to watch his friends being happy with their lives whilst hiding the pain inside him. Of course, he is happy for them. I felt, in a way, the "confession/proposal" he did to Deok Sun in front of their friends was at least a way to provide some respite for his pain. I believe Deok Sun understood that he was telling the truth.

I hope Jung Hwan finds his own happiness, peace and lots of love in his life ♥️😊💕💘.

Como esperado dos Choi, a família estava metida no pior do que Incheon poderia oferecer e ainda tinham muito orgulho disso, sendo  leais demais aos negócios sujos, desde o início e até os dias de hoje. Mesmo quando os gêmeos da família nasceram, ainda faziam questão de frequentar os mesmos lugares e deixar que pessoas de completa má influência estivessem ao redor dos pequenos, esses que coitados, eram tão inocentes.

Mas esse último detalhe é uma memória distante, já que aqueles que conhecem verdadeiramente os Choi consideram Taek o exato espelho dos genitores. Foi no início da pré-adolescência que começou a se mostrar rebelde e em seguida na adolescência que o hábito e modo de ver a vida se tornou ainda mais obscuro. Mas quem ligava? Filho de peixe, peixinho é. 

Nunca esteve tão interessado nos estudos já que aparentemente era inteligente sem ter que se esforçar, ou na implacável busca por uma profissão, sempre soube o que queria ser e fazer: mostrar sua competência e orgulhar sua família. Desde cedo e até os dias atuais, Taek tem se dedicado a viver livremente e dar continuidade aos negócios dos pais, isso inclui a mudança para Seul a fim de expandir os negócios, onde vende as drogas que a família produz, inclusive costuma trazer novidades que poucos traficantes conseguem na cidade e é o que acaba chamando atenção. 

Embora tenha esse lado delinquente e que para os civis comuns não seja perceptível, é bastante calmo e não costuma brigar tanto quanto antes. É bem solícito com quem precisa e esbanja educação por onde passa. Para sustentar a boa imagem, mantém um emprego de fachada como promotor de eventos, aproveitando a noite balada de Seul e os vários clientes que têm acesso por isso. Todavia tudo tem um limite e quando o limite de Taek é ultrapassado, a serenidade que costumava demonstrar pode sumir em uma fração de segundos.

Got reminded of why i hold the character of Choi Taek so close to my heart.

Episode sixteen of Reply 1988. Taek finally mustered up the courage of asking out the love of his life,only to realize that his best friend is also in love with the one he loves. He saw the way Junghwan looked at her, saw the photo of them he kept in his wallet. Yet he handed the wallet to Deoksun and asked her to return it to Junghwan. He had to win that match to confess to her and he did it. He was in a whole different country yet he made plans with her just so he can finally confess. Just to delay it all. He simply chose not to confess even when he had it all figured out. Just to help out a friend. He wanted his best friend to try and get the girl he loves. EVEN WHEN HE LOVES THE SAME GIRL SO BAD THAT BRO EVEN CRIED. WHAT IS THIS. There’s a reason why men like that only exist in fictional worlds i suppose. Or maybe that's just male friendship, if that's true, it'd be a reason to have faith in humanity.
