Relieve Jaw Pain Naturally: How Chiropractic Care Can Help TMJ Dysfunction at BRAIN TO BODY®
If you’ve ever experienced persistent jaw pain, difficulty chewing, or a popping sound when you open your mouth, you may be dealing with TMJ dysfunction. This common condition can affect your ability to eat, speak, and even smile comfortably. At BRAIN TO BODY®, we specialize in holistic chiropractic care that targets the root cause of TMJ dysfunction, offering a natural and effective path to relief.
What is TMJ Dysfunction?
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) acts as a hinge connecting your jaw to your skull, enabling movement when you talk, chew, or yawn. TMJ dysfunction occurs when this joint becomes misaligned or inflamed, leading to a range of uncomfortable symptoms. It can develop due to various factors, including poor posture, stress, teeth grinding, or even previous injuries.
Recognizing the Symptoms of TMJ Dysfunction
TMJ dysfunction manifests in several ways, often making daily activities challenging or painful. Some of the most common symptoms include:
Jaw pain or soreness: Discomfort that worsens with chewing, speaking, or yawning.
Popping or clicking sounds: Noises in the jaw joint when you open or close your mouth.
Headaches or migraines: Frequent headaches that may radiate from the jaw to the temples or forehead.
Difficulty opening your mouth fully: A restricted range of motion, making it hard to open or close the mouth.
Earaches or tinnitus: Pain or ringing in the ears, often mistaken for ear infections.
Neck and shoulder tension: Pain radiating from the jaw into the neck and upper back.
If you’ve noticed any of these symptoms, it could indicate TMJ dysfunction, and chiropractic care can help alleviate the underlying causes.
The Chiropractic Approach to TMJ Relief
At BRAIN TO BODY®, we take a holistic view of TMJ dysfunction, understanding that the jaw’s function is closely tied to the alignment of the spine and nervous system. Misalignments in the neck and upper back can place additional strain on the jaw, causing TMJ issues.
Our chiropractic care focuses on three key aspects:
Correcting Misalignments: Gentle chiropractic adjustments help realign the spine and jaw, reducing pressure on the TMJ and allowing it to move freely without pain or discomfort.
Relieving Tension: By releasing tension in the muscles around the neck and jaw, we help reduce inflammation, allowing the joint to heal naturally.
Improving Function: With the spine and nervous system properly aligned, your body can function more efficiently, reducing the risk of TMJ flare-ups in the future.
Why TMJ Dysfunction Shouldn’t Be Ignored
It’s easy to overlook jaw pain, especially if it comes and goes. However, chronic TMJ dysfunction can lead to more significant problems if left untreated. Untreated TMJ issues can result in:
Worsening jaw pain and stiffness
Chronic headaches or migraines
Increased stress on the teeth, leading to dental issues
Ongoing neck, shoulder, or upper back pain
Addressing the root cause early with chiropractic care ensures that your symptoms don’t escalate, and you can return to a pain-free lifestyle.
Holistic Care for Long-Lasting Relief
At BRAIN TO BODY®, we don’t believe in temporary fixes. Our approach to TMJ dysfunction is rooted in treating the entire body, not just the jaw. Many cases of TMJ dysfunction are connected to poor posture or stress, both of which impact the nervous system’s ability to function properly. By addressing these issues through chiropractic adjustments, we provide long-lasting relief that goes beyond masking symptoms.
What to Expect from Your First Visit
If you’ve never visited a chiropractor before, you might be curious about what to expect. At BRAINTO BODY®, we begin with a complimentary consultation to get to know your medical history and understand the nature of your jaw pain. During this consultation, we’ll evaluate your symptoms and discuss how chiropractic care can help.
Our personalized treatment plans are designed to relieve TMJ dysfunction by restoring balance to your body, focusing on gentle, effective adjustments to improve jaw function and reduce tension.
Ready to Say Goodbye to Jaw Pain?
Jaw pain doesn’t have to be part of your daily life. If TMJ dysfunction is keeping you from enjoying your meals, speaking comfortably, or sleeping soundly, it’s time to explore a natural solution that addresses the root of the problem. At BRAIN TO BODY®, we’re committed to helping you find relief through personalized chiropractic care that supports your body’s healing process.
Visit us at Retail 5/6 Central Park Ave, Chippendale NSW 2008, or reach out today to schedule your complimentary consultation. Let us help you live pain-free and restore balance to your nervous system, so you can enjoy life without the constant distraction of jaw pain.
It’s time to take control of your health and get back to living your best life, free from the discomfort of TMJ dysfunction.

My chiropractor regularly has to work on knots in this little muscle, I'm so tense - but keep in mind that this muscle is just one of many! If there's a refrain I know well by now, it's that where it hurts is not always (and often isn't) the root of your pain. The root cause could be in your traps, or lats - one muscle freaks out and it triggers all the muscle it holds onto! If you sit at your desk a lot, look into exercises/yoga stretches for your upper back/traps - my traps are often the true culprit when I have a tension headache/migraine, and they're pissing off my neck muscles and it's just a huge domino effect.
youtube
This is a technique my chiro does to 'strip' the muscles - she has tools for it, but told me about the spoon technique for when I have issues and can't get in to see her. This guy demonstrates it really well! These massage balls are also good! Especially for hitting the muscles along your shoulder blade, and getting at tension knotted in your shoulders - it can be hard to get to the muscles on your neck with these - since you're usually leaning against a wall to roll these along your back with enough force to actually massage the muscle, so the spoon may be more effective at hitting neck muscles.
ANYWAYS. Huge diversion from my usual content, but I had daily tension migraines that crippled me for like 6 or more hours a day, and I'm making a lot of progress now, so I thought I'd share the simple techniques and tools I use to help that are accessible to most people! Anyways! General Practitioners don't know everything. Chiropractors know a lot too - they're specially trained to work on muscles and bones and know when it feels wrong, and when things aren't where they're supposed to be. You just have to vet them, like any other doctor, because I've had bad ones - but the one I'm at now is basically the only reason I haven't left the midwest yet... I don't want to look for another chiro I can trust!
Okay I’m currently furious that migraines are often so blindly easy to treat and I had to find this out myself at the age of 26 when I’ve been to a neurologist since I was 11 lol so I’m about to teach you two neat and fast little tricks to deal with pain!
The first is the sternocleidomastoid muscle, or the SCM muscle.
Tumblr media
This big red section is responsible for pain around the eye, cheekbone, and jaw, as well as some temple pain. Literally all you have to do is angle your head down a little, angle it away from the side that hurts, and then you can gently pinch and rub that muscle. I find it best to start at the bottom and travel upwards. The relief is so immediate! You can increase pressure as you feel comfortable doing so.
Here is a short and easy video showing this in action
The second is a fast and easy stretch that soothes your vagus nerve, which is the nerve responsible for calming you down. The vagus nerve, for those unfamiliar, is stimulated by deep breathing such as yawning, sighing, singing, or taking a deep breath to calm your anger in a tense situation.
You can stretch this out by sitting up as straight as possible (this does not have to be perfect to work) and interlacing your fingers. Put your hands on the back of your head with your thumbs going down the sides of your neck and, while keeping your face forward, look all the way to one side with just your eyes. Hold that until you feel the urge to breathe deeply or yawn, or until you can tell there’s a change. Then do the same thing on the other side. When you put your arms down, you should clearly be able to turn your head farther in both directions. If the first session doesn’t get rid of your migraine, rest and repeat as many times as necessary. I even get a little fancy with it and roll my eyes up and down along the outer edge sometimes to stretch as much as I can.
If you need a visual here’s a good video on it. I know some of the language they use seems questionable but this is real and simple science and should not be discarded because it’s been adopted by the trendy wellness crowd!
I seriously cannot believe I didn’t hear a word of this from any doctor in my life. Additionally, if you get frequent recurring migraines, you may want to see a dietician. Migraines can be caused by foods containing histamines, lectin, etc. and can also be caused by high blood pressure in specific situations such as exercise, stress, and even sex.
If any of this information helps you I’d love to hear it btw! It’s so so fast and easy to do. Good luck!
