Starting this week off will be chinsuko, which I have opted to make myself. I followed this recipe (specifically the brown sugar variation):

These came out dry and crunchy. The taste is very plain with a hint of brown sugar. Dunking is just okay on these cookies. Overall not bad, but these also don't really do much for me.

Vegan Chinsuko (Okinawan Shortbread Cookies) ちんすこう

チンスコウ

ちんすこうは、沖縄を代表する伝統的な焼き菓子です。小麦粉や砂糖、ラードなどを使って作られ、素朴で優しい甘みが特徴です。ちんすこうの生地は、小麦粉や砂糖、ラードを混ぜてこねたもので、弾力があり、ほろほろとした食感に仕上がります。基本的には素朴な甘みの「ピーナッツ味」や「プレーン味」が定番ですが、近年では「黒糖味」や「紅いも味」、果物やチョコレートなどを使ったものなど、様々なフレーバーのちんすこうも登場しています。 ちんすこうは、沖縄で古くから愛されてきたお菓子で、琉球王朝時代から作られていたと言われています。当時は「チンセンコー」と呼ばれ、中国から伝わった製法を沖縄風にアレンジしたものとされています。

Years after watching Azumanga Daioh, I finally got to try chinsuko at Okinawa Day last year. They were really good, like a cross between a shortbread biscuit and Danish butter cookie. I would definitely buy these again.

ブクブク茶 Bukubuku-cha

Bukubuku tea is a a type of furicha, a traditional Ryukyuan (Okinawan) tea. The tea was almost forced into extinction during-after the Battle of Okinawa. There were revival efforts in the 1950's and it was officially restored in the 1980's. The roots and origin of this tea are assumed to have begun around 1587 during the Ryukyu Kingdom.

My friend and I went to the Namin Matsuri at 波上宮 (Naminoue in JP/Nanmin meaning "Above the Waves" in Uchinaaguchi) and the Bukubuku Tea Preservation Society was there offering tea with chinsuko.

The photo on the left showcases the ingredients used 無洗米（むせんまい Musenmai）、炒り米（いりごめ Irigome）、お赤飯（おせきはん Osekihan）、じーまみ (Jiimami)、さんぴん茶 (Sanpin-cha).

🍰 — favorite sweet(s)/dessert(s)?

Oh man, I have a huuuge sweet tooth! Because there are so many, I'm gonna narrow it down to Okinawan sweet treats that I will always go feral for (especially since I don't think you can get this stuff in the US):

Chinsuko (Okinawan shortbread cookies): they come in a lot of flavors, but black sugar, original, and beni imo are my faves

Okinawan black sugar ice cream (I've gotten black sugar candies at Daiso- they're different than brown sugar, but I couldn't tell you how)

Beni imo (Okinawan purple potato, akin to ube in flavor but I don't think they're actually related)- cookies, ice cream, candies- you name it, they make it in Okinawa. And of course, it's purple! My favorite color!

Sataa andaagi: they're basically the Okinawan version of donut holes, except they're less sweet (in a good way). I've had friends and relatives make these before here in the US, and even if they don't come out well, I'll still eat one.

🎶 — favorite song at the moment?

I'm in between favorite songs at the moment, which is like being in between hyperfixations. :((( I think it's because I keep getting preschool songs stuck in my head. DX Here's to hoping a song sweeps me off my feet soon!

📕 — favorite book/series?

Kiki's Delivery Service by Eiko Kadono is possibly my favorite book of all time. I've loved the movie since I was a child, and the book captures that slice of life vibe that drew me into the movie. If I ever had a child, I'd want to read a chapter each night as a bedtime story to them.

My favorite book series is harder to pin down. I recently read the Chronicles of Prydain by Christopher Alexander and loved them! The first and second books were the inspiration for The Black Cauldron, but the books are much better than the movie. They're inspired by Welsh mythology, which is an interest of mine :)

I’m Okuda Iroha from 5th gen

Okinawa~~

It was so much fun, but it was really hot! The heat in Okinawa is quite different from Tokyo, isn't it? Tokyo is humid, while Okinawa is scorching. Oh, I've come up with an easy-to-understand analogy.

I saw beautiful seas and ate lots of delicious food.

Like Fu Chanpuru, Sata Andagi, Chinsuko, and Blue Seal’s ice cream. Ah, it was so much fun in Okinawa~

I coincidentally had the same hairstyle as Satsuki.

It was a half-up bun! I received compliments from everyone, so I'll try it again sometime. Also, after about six months, I performed live with my bangs down! Lately, I've always had my bangs up, but this time I tried a 2-way bangs style, where I can have bangs and without bangs, both look nice.

Which one do you all like better?

And then, I did this pose with Yanchan.

She is my beloved senior whom I deeply admire for her kindness, fun loving nature, and cuteness!

I call she "Yanchan," and I'm the first among the juniors to do so. I feel a little special and happy about it... hehehe

They announced new character goods today and there's a lot of Okinawan references in it so I thought I'd share what I noticed!

Everyone is wearing hibiscus flowers, which are very common in Okinawa!

Reki is holding Chinsuko cookies which are a well known traditional cookie from Okinawa. He also has an Okinawan Shisa with him.

Langa has pineapple. Pineapples are a big agricultural product in Okinawa. They even have a whole theme park dedicated to them. He also has a shisa. Shisa do usually come in pairs.

Miya has a whale shark with him. The aquarium in Okinawa is famous for having a large whale shark exhibit. He is also holding a shikuwasa which are commonly grown in Okinawa. They're a citrus fruit kind of similar to a lime.

Shadow is eating Sugar cane. Sugar cane is also a common agricultural product in Okinawa.

Cherry is holding a hanagasa, which is a flower hat from traditional ryuukyuuan clothing. And it looks like he's holding a bag of andagi, which are Okinawan donuts!

Joe is drinking awamori which is a sake famous in Okinawa.

ADAM is holding a sanshin which is a traditional instrument in Okinawa, similar to a shamisen, but it is smaller and made with snakeskin. He also has a sangwa tied to his hip. They are a tradition in Okinawa to ward off bad spirits.

Tadashi is holding Okinawa soba. He also has a sangwa tied to his hip.
