Loving Children of Morta so far for 2 main reasons apart from the gameplay:
It’s about a FAMILYYYYY! A spooky family! I love them. And their cat…!
My current main is a fast-paced dual-wielding ninja assassin build. Said build happens to belong to a teenage gremlin boy named freaking KEVIN—

The developers at Massive Monster, however, proved everyone wrong with Cult of Lamb, a title that merges mechanics from the roguelike and farm management genre. Both systems beautifully rely on each other, making the game truly feel like one of a kind. But for players who just can’t get enough of Cult of the Lamb, here are a handful of titles that can scratch the itch for both roguelike and farm management.

Just had the very video game situation of "killed boss at the same time as the boss killed me." Time to do it again, since my death hit first (even if I got the achievement).

So I have been playing Children of Morta and there are a lot of things I really enjoy about. I haven't quite finished the story mode
LET ME REPEAT THAT: I LIKE A LOT OF THINGS ABOUT CHILDREN OF MORTA! I LOVE A LOT OF THE GAME PLAY AND CONCEPTS GOING ON IN THIS GAME! ITS A BEAUTIFUL GAME AS WELL!
However... (do not pass this point if you are not up for dealing with criticism of the game, especially with a feminist lens)
The writing for the women and girls in the game is kind of awful. At least that I have seen so far
Mary is so chronically ill that she had to leave Lucy in the care of Margeret for years, and yet she is still having another kid. In fact, her whole character boils down to the sickly wife and the occasionally nay saying mother. Narratively, there isn't anything else to her, and in game mechanics, there is nothing to do with her. In a game about family, somehow, the mother is sidelined.
Sheila, the only woman mentioned so far at all to be a physical close combat fighter, never makes even an appearance and is, in fact, dead. Her death and the introduction of her son are used as a reason for character growth for Uncle Ben.
Margeret is supposed to be the matriarch to the family, and at least narratively and mechanically, there is a decent amount to actually back this up. Her upgrades from the book of Rhea are an important mechanic to progress. Her cutscenes consistently show her as knowledgeable and an authority in the family. She is still somewhat static, but she is shown to be consistently impacted by the revelations that have been made about the Corruption. However, she still has limited impact to the storyline for the family members compared to Ben, and her role as a magical herbalist and religious scholar are also overdone roles for older women characters.
All the playable girls (unless the final character I haven't unlocked yet goes against this trend. I am betting money that is not the case) are ranged fighters only. Lucy as a mage and Linda as an archer, which are some of the most common roles that women in media are put into. We rarely see, if ever, a woman in media that is allowed to be physically strong on par with her masculine counterparts, especially not in some way where she isn't damseled, killed, violated, or made palatable to male audiences. In fact, even Lucy and Linda both are made chickified by things such as their hobbies being music and art.
Lucy had to go through a whole trial to show she was ready to join the fight, while Kevin simply snuck out to prove himself with very little consequence for terrifying the family. Linda also sneaks out but only to join her father on his investigation at the start of the game and immediately return home.
All of these things separately, I could write off, but with these elements combined, it really comes off like the game has an issue devaluing the women in the Bergson family. It likely wasn't a conscious decision on the part of the writers. That is the insidious thing about patriarchal culture or any other cultural absorption of prejudice, you can unconsciously perpetuate it. However, it has been something grating at me while playing the game.

Playing Children of Morta and it's a great game! Beautiful pixel art, wholesome storyline of a family standing against a great evil, you can 2 player it with a friend if you aren't into major level grinding, and I'm having a great time yelling about precious Lil Kev 🤣

logged all the video games i completed in 2024. idk who would read this but i thought i should get it out of the notes app and somewhere for posterity. this list only includes games i finished. dozens more fell to the wayside in 2024.
video games i completed in 2024
Children of Morta; 11BIT,/DEAD MAGE completed January 2024 free download on PS+ rogue-lite, RPG, multiplayer Bergesen family vs The Corruption and God of the Mountain, Ou story and dialogue/text sloppy but heartfelt. incoherent conclusion. play as one of 6 characters each w dif abilities/fighting styles. DLC adds more playable chars. Jamie Paul talked about this one many times and at length in lockdown era Lamer Gamer sessions. gameplay is 9/10. story mode is short, learning curve is gentle so it's easy to get OP fast. 8/10
Red Dead Redemption II; Rockstar Games completed March 2024 free download on PS+ open world, RPG, outlaw/western theme, shooter the story leaves a lot on the table w countless missed opportunities for more interesting story beats and constant idiocy by the characters to drive the narrative from chapter to chapter. play as Arthur Morgan and roam the partially colonized landscape of a fictional US in 1899. gun combat is fun but too many shootouts. hunting mechanic not great. character of Arthur is an all time great one, option to play white or black hat, i went white hat obv. Jeff rec this one to me away back in 2020 when it came out. in his opinion the game wants the player to play white hat Arthur. either way, Arthur dies primarily bc of the stupidity and general dumb-shit choices of his boss, Dutch van der Lind, a character who would be half as hateable if not for how badly he fumbled our beloved Arthur Morgan's human life. this game looks right at race and colonization in US manifest destiny policy and reality. lost cause former slavers are not sympathetic in the least, Arthur takes pleasure in destroying the few pitiful possessions of one in a more pointed side quest. Charles, half black half indian, is the most interesting and all around best character in the game/member of the gang and he's just a peripheral helping hand for some reason and not who you play as in the epilogue but rather, they bounce you to John Marston bc they have to call back/connect to RDR1 for some reason, instead of giving the player what they want (Charles DLC) really enjoyed the quest essential to the main storyline wherein Arthur drives a wagon for a bunch of suffragettes. that was designed to specifically infuriate the worst type of gamer and i dig it. made me laugh the whole time i was doing it. 8/10
Suzerain; Torpor Games completed March 2024 Switch, paid for this one text based, strategy, RPG played thru twice in a frenzy and got the same awful ending both times :/ initially very engaging and fun but seems cheaply made in places. no real depth to chars. invites multiple playthrus promising a variety of branching paths leading to at least nine endings (?) and their variations but after getting the same ending 2x i wasn't motivated to try a 3rd go round. could be valuable to get into again later but mostly made me feel dumb! 6/10
Civilization VI; Firaxis Games completed March 2024 PS, paid for this one strategy, turn based, board game, legacy title, conquest, 4X this game sucked away a full week of my life as i spent long hours trying to master it. play is against AI but w no history w this franchise i had a lot to learn before i was able to exploit the lack of creativity shown by any game's AI opponent and win a decisive religious victory. messed around w diff game builds and set ups but mostly lost interest entirely before i won a single game. narrations by sean bean, lol. upon reflection and playing around w a couple other iterations of the "4X" style of game (Xplore, Xploit, Xpand, Xterminate), i was quickly disillusioned w the colonial nature of the core elements of the game that manifest in everything from the title to the "technology skill tree" which didn't even include textiles! the animations of world leaders were amusing and fun, but it was odd there was no VA for them beyond grunts and scoffs and such, the language of international diplomacy, i guess. the blanket approach to choosing a single individual statesman from somewhere in the history of a list of a few dozen "civilizations" and dropping them all in a timeline spanning 3500 yrs made for some very on the nose bullshit. John Curtin for Australia and Teddy Roosevelt for US being two particularly shitty choices. that's a small detail, sure, but in a game that ultimately sought to rewire my brain to focus solely on "expansion" "exploitation" EX EX X, well, i took umbrage all around. 7/10
Hundred Days; Broken Arms Games completed April 2024 free to play on PS+ simulator, puzzle, farm simulator wine-making simulator w a thin story and unending missed opportunities to improve player buy-in. days tick by counting years in seasons of 15 days each. game story ends at 100 days, right when wine-making aspects are improving. nothing to keep a player engaged past main story ending aside from option to do so. 3/10
Dave the Diver; Mint Rocket Games completed April 2024 free to play on PS+ exploration, underwater, restaurant/farm simulator w elements of many other styles the primary thing i liked about Dave the Diver was that the titular diver, Dave, main character you play as, is fat. and not video game "fat" but just round and fat and fat! and he's the hero! you split time in this game between diving and gathering fish and supplies, and using those items in the "evening" at a sushi restaurant MR. Bancho Sushi. the restaurant portion is much like a mobile style simulator game, while the diving portions are more well rounded and exciting. the game is beautifully animated with lots of color and a good unique soundtrack. the characters, particularly Bancho, are stereotypes, but not so terribly that it ruins the otherwise warm and welcoming vibe of the game. but maybe it's a bit much. cannot stress enough how much i enjoyed playing a game with a fat protagonist. some boss fights in game seemed poorly balanced and even unfair but in a game that is 90% "underwater level" it really is pretty well made, fun, challenging, and rewarding. the gameplay loop has an addictive "one more turn" quality to it. but by the time i reached the end of the story mode, i was ready to be finished with said loop. 8/10
Unpacking; WitchBeam completed May 2024 free to play on PS+ point and click, puzzle, organizing, unpacking simulator, story-based a mobile/console crossover and the shortest game i've played this year. only a few levels of ever-expanding spaces to populate with the ephemera of an unseen protagonist. tells a little story 1997 - 2018 with no dialogue, characters (seen), or scenes. just the objects you unpack and the spaces you unpack them into to clue you into the course of this woman's life. happy lesbian ending and a bespoke song plays over the credits. ends abruptly. def a game for the girlies who love to organize. 6/10
telling lies!; Annapurnam Games completed May 2024 free to play on PS+ interactive story, investigative, non-linear, detective, desktop, key word, search took me by surprise. live action w vaguely recognizable cast turning in some ok performances. Maxine's char played by a familiar face from Westworld was a special treat. story of a crooked cop's ruination told thru one sided video chats over 12 months of him totally fucking up his life and the lives of all those around him during an undercover operation. embedded in a group of environmental activists in detroit, david jones/miller/smith lies his way to a terrible end. you play as Karen, and have six hours to see it all by way of keyword searches on a hard drive containing only this six hrs of stolen data and a solitaire game. after credits, you get a lil report on how you did and what you focused on in your searches. i managed to see "over three quarters" of all available content so, not bad. this was engaging, basically a movie you play. not choose your own adventure but choose your own path through the unfolding of these events. game has maybe a lil bit to say about cops and entrapment and good guy/bad guy binary thinking but mostly is interested in the bad behavior of its main character, david. or maybe it was me obsessed, after all… i was the one seeking out answers. a different kind of game experience. love the drama. 7/10
Marvel's Midnight Suns; Marvel, Firaxis Games completed May 2024 free to play on PS+ turn based, deck building w RPG elements focused on collections and building friendships, which in turn boost combat abilities & synergies in the combat portion. features a hodgepodge of Marvel characters, the titular Midnight Suns: Blade, Nico (Runaways), Magik (X-Men), Ghost Rider. team up w various Avengers including Iron Man, Dr. Strange, Captains America AND Marvel, Spider-Man, the Hulk. Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet witch is present w a foot in either team, and also showing up: Wolverine on sabbatical from Xavier Academy. they're assisted by NPCs Agatha Harkness' ghost, Caretaker/Sara, and player character "The Hunter," resurrected to again slay her mother, Lilith, Mother of Demons, & prevent the prophecy on the pages of the Darkhold from bringing forth the return of Elder God Cthon, who will consume the world. gameplay loop has that Firaxis touch of just one more. turn based combat and deck building across 12 playable character plus the hunter make for a fun exploration of synergies and mechanics but ultimately the game is a slog that leans a lot on the story, which is typical MARVEL schlock, even if it's well fleshed out. the character interactions are kinda the draw outside of the deck building, if you're the fanfic type which i'm really not. still, it is kinda fun making friends w Logan and intentionally choosing the dialogue options that piss off Tony Stark. mid and post credits scene promise sequels to the story, but unless the wring out a whole lot of unnecessary back-and-forth in the RPG elements of the gameplay, i'm not gonna revisit this franchise on opening day. 6/10
Deliver Us The Moon; KeokeN Interactive completed May 2024 free to play on PS+ puzzle game, linear, investigative, space sci fi, hard sci fi evocative of Horizon Zero Dawn in the unfolding of the story thru the choppy, out-of-order discovery of holovideos, journal entries, letters, notes, etc. a moon colony devoted to mining helium-3 and transmitting it wirelessly to a dying earth up and disappears one day. play as an astronaut leaving earth to investigate what happened five years ago when the signal went dark. a mix up of puzzles, timed challenges, platforming, and investigative/discovery/exploration play in a hard sci fi moon base setting. some fun Luigi's Mansion elements playing as an assistant droid unit ASE, which allows access to areas the player character cannot reach. breadcrumbs of story are less interesting than they could be, or maybe i was kinda tuned out of the story and focused on the gameplay, shocked as i was to discover the various first-person elements didn't make me sea sick, so i was able to play this game at all, let alone finish it. moody soundtrack and atmospheric elements elevate the gameplay. generous use of the controller rumble to set the mood of being on a space station or moon base with mechanisms and reactors in various states of decay and malfunction. there is a sequel that i will prob check out, but not right away. 7/10
Balatro; LocalThunk completed July 2024 purchased on PS+ deck-building, roguelike, poker, card game played this one after seeing one trusted twitter rec. consumed two weeks of my life. constant play. unlocking new cards and new challenges makes it an addictive game loop, but i burned out very quickly and ended my efforts before unlocking all of the difficulty levels through play. diminishing returns on a game that starts strong. may return to it another day or it may go the way of Wingspan for Switch, in that i can never look at it again. 7/10
Cult of the Lamb; Massive Monster completed main game September 2024 free to play on PS+ roguelike/roguelite action, dungeon crawler, farming simulator, simulator there is post game but it's mostly a reskin of the main campaign so i feel i can log this one w/o completing it. CotL incorporates some solid game mechanics found in favs like Hades, Children of Morta, and even Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley! gameplay is split between the roguelike/roguelite dungeon crawling progression and the simulator, cult-building, which serves to strengthen the player character thru upgrades of cult facilities and increased loyalty and devotion from cult followers. cultists have perks, personalities, build relationships w one another, and live finite lives w limited time to fully indoctrinate them into your service. the dungeon crawling elements are more Children of Morta than Hades, but the combinations of curses, tarot card abilities, relics, cloak powers, summoned demons, and a handful of other variables make each run more or less unique. played this in normal difficultly mode and didn't find boss battles to be much of a challenge unless they were heavy on projectiles! felt equal ambivalence balancing the simulator portions w the dungeon portions, and didn't always know how to best spend my time. the terraforming tool could use some QoL upgrades to make big renovations easier and more worth the effort. the style is very cute, cut thru w some very dark themes and moments that lend a lot of humor and a little edginess from time to time. don't get too attached to cultists, they eventually die! 8/10
Ghost of Tsushima; Sucker Punch completed main campaign, DLC, platinum October 2024 free to play on PS+ Adventure/RPG, open world, combat RPG, cinematic, stealth tried my hand at a year or two ago and didn't take but was in the right space for it now. not very challenging at the normal difficulty level but i was kinda feeling that so i stuck w it. the combat loop is a little dry but with perfect parry/riposte mechanics, always feels good. charms and armor allow for specialization toward diff archetypes and very sexy appearance customizations. the bonus online Legends Mode goes so far as to divide the ghost into four playable archetypes: samurai, archer, assassin, ronin. the main game allows for all four aspects to be readily at hand and customization allows for a balanced build alongside many spec builds. the story is one of invasion and conquest, with the DLC story flipping that on the PC, Lord Jin Sakai, whose father did and invasion/conquest of his own. the innovation of using blowing wind to indicate direction toward missions and points of interest in the open world is such a brilliant way to render a mini map null and void! i used this mechanic constantly and it was by far a main driver in getting my to platinum status: this is the easiest game to platinum i have ever played, notwithstanding. the haikus, bamboo strikes, and hot springs added something charming and unique to an otherwise familiar sword adventure rpg type of game. loved playing that flute. obv the feudal Japan high samurai era aesthetic is beautiful, if overly romanticized. lots of women warriors in this game. the horse dies. kept me coming back to find all of its little secrets and the standoff mechanic was delightful. high risk and reward. sort of takes Sekiro swordplay to an Assassin's Creed kinda place, that feels good to play but not as challenging as Sekiro with all the finicky navigational bs of AC games (no! don't jump on the roof! go thru the window! ARGH!). might even spend more time in the Legends mode fiddling with assassin build and look bc it is fun tho without online coop might be pretty boring and i don't know anyone who plays this game like that and online matchmaking is spotty at best. 9/10
Loop Hero; Four Quarter; Devolver Digital completed November 2024, six final boss kills for trophy paid for this one, Switch Engine-builder, rogue-lite, RPG-lite Jeff rec. cool pixelated look and 8bit style OST with basic narrative. engine-building elements with enough items to make unique builds and approaches encourages experimentation and variety. a little dull and sometimes a loop felt endless, but gives that "oh yeah, baby," feeling when a build comes together and you start breezing thru loops. some lovely pixel designs on the bosses. kinda confusing building tools but manageable, tho no option to move buildings in camp makes for frustrating times later when you figure out how it SHOULD be put together. prob will never touch again. 8/10

10 Best Co-Op RPGs
There's a general feeling that RPG adventures need to be a solitary experience to stand out from the crowd, and adding the ability to bring a friend alone only serves to dilute the experience. This can be the case in some situations, but it's not always the case, as some RPGs are much richer when you have a buddy alongside you to lend a blade in battle. So, to prove that point, we have created a list of the finest co-op RPG games in recent memory.
Check them out!

I bardzo mnie to cieszy, bo każda platforma to kolejna szansa by ktoś w nią zagrał. Dopadłem się materiałów prasowych od wydawcy, to zrobię z nich dobry użytek Zwłaszcza, że Children of Morta pasuje na telefony…

"I do not know if leaving this bubble causes periodic damage to the player." Well, famdom wiki writer, I can 100% confirm that walking outside the bubble causes periodic damage to the player.
And, I don't know if this is an actual bug: my game seems to have crashed on the game summary screen, kind of like it didn't expect me to do something that dumb.
