Vintage art for a Chesapeake & Ohio Rail Road calendar by Charles Bracker! So sweet. The sleeping kitty is "Chessie", one of the most successful cat advertising mascots of the 20th century. Source.

Cryptids & Creatures of Folklore Drawtober Day 27 — Chessie
At over 200 miles in length, the Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in the United States and its drainage basin extends into six states. It is also said to be home to a sea monster.
The first recorded sightings of the creature, nicknamed "Chessie" which was no doubt inspired by the "Nessie" of Loch Ness fame, date back to the 1930s. Sightings were sporadic up until the 1970s and 1980s when many people reported seeing the sea serpent swimming in the Bay. The most recent sighting was in 2014.
Chessie is described as a large, snake-like creature around forty feet in length. It is said to be black in color and some accounts say it has a snake-like head while others say it is more horse-like in appearance.

Cryptid of the Day: Chessie
Description: Sightings began in 1936, when a military helicopter pilot saw something reptilian over Bush River. Since then, it has been seen dozens of times, including being video taped in 1982. A manatee discovered in Chesapeake Bay in 1994 was named after the monster

Follow Up on the Badger
I wanted to add some support to my previous post, showing the Badger coming into Ludington, Michigan. [The image above is from the same series, taken recently, July 18th 2024.]
I mentioned the Spartan, sister ship to the Badger. Here's a shot of it from three years ago, sitting in Ludington where it is stored and used for spare parts for the Badger.
Tumblr media
I also have a few shots of the Badger (from the late-1970s) when it was hauling railroad cars between Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and what I assume to have been Ludington. These two black and white analog images were made in Milwaukee; the ship was part of the C&O Railway at the time—as the Chessie logo on the stack attests.

The first image above shows the ship in its entirety, while the second illustrates how and where the rail cars were loaded into the aft end of the ship. When it was hauling rail, one could book passage, as well as take your auto along (apparently).
All images by Richard Koenig.

Chessie from Chesapeake Bay Harbour
Chessie (1986 Coloring Book made by U.S. Fish and Wildlife) For some reason, all the best pictures of this cryptid seem to be cartoons with no life-like ones.  Maybe just my bad luck.  As you can tell, we have another water monster, which seem to be really common around the world.  So, what is Chessie? Reports say this is a sea creature, which is about 30 feet long and as thick as a telephone…

Commission | Atlas Games Cryptid Hunt Pt 5
At the beginning of last year I was contacted by a publishing company and contracted to make all the art for an upcoming puzzle book they were making. I spent 5 months working on this, and I have so many pieces it’ll be broken up into multiple parts! This was the first half of Batch C.
All the cryptids!! This is the next section of images commissioned for the puzzle book Cryptid Hunt. Swamp monster is probably my favorite in this batch, both Squonk a at the end can burn in flames 🔥
Y’all can like his little ugly face, I’d sell my soul if it meant never having to draw the Squonk again, he is just so ugly
The kickstarter has officially ended, and I found the link to the publishers listing, Cryptid Hunt releases for both digital and physical sale in July!

Anyway what if Hannibal is actually the cryptid known as Chessie supposedly last seen in the Chesapeake Bay in the late 90s because that’s when he decided to come ashore and become a doctor?
