"Hollyhocks in Little Budworth" is a pen and watercolour piece.

I finished it last month, having seen this lovely flower against so many doorways in both Abingdon and Keswick!

It depicts a very pretty cottage I saw near the church in this beautiful Cheshire village (near the Oulton Park motor racing circuit) on a walk Steve and I took two years ago.

The scene was idyllic. The weather was great, nothing was happening at the race track, the pub was open and a horse rider had stopped for a drink and a chat with some of her neighbours. St George's flag was flying above the sandstone parish church and someone had taken a great pride in their cottage garden.

This looked to me like the epitome of a Cheshire country cottage, with black metal railings, the sandstone tower behind and the hollyhocks, such an evocative cottage garden flower.

Okay wait lowkey narration hc is that the unmaking lava has been slowly affecting the narrators which is why the narrators aren’t aware that kitty can talk to them in kittys curious tale, why they say it’s spring in true hearts day and why Brooke acts as if she’s never interacted with kitty and Maddie before.

So the unmaking lava is lowly making them forget

Again I don’t have the books to verify this but I’m pretty sure the lava it’s self just makes everything it’s basic definition but maybe the metaphorical smoke is what makes them forget

This watercolour was inspired by my husband and my walk from Kingsmead along the Weaver into Northwich, soon after the lifting of lockdown restrictions made the racing possible again in 2021.

We thought it's be a quiet walk. I'd still not seen many people since starting shielding from Covid-19 in March 2020. How wrong could we have been! We walked into a vibrant scene, with people crowding the banks to cheer on the rowers in the autumn Head of the River race at Northwich Rowing Club! It was scary but exhilarating, and I just couldn't stop taking photos on my phone!

This painting shows the moment a crew of four approached the club's dock after their race, illuminated by fierce autumn sunlight and surrounded by the fire-like colours of the season's foliage. Enjoy!

little character descriptions based off of the lom wonderland au i’m writing!!

SAM ( SAMUEL ) TYLER: a smart copper who knows what he’s doing.. at least, he thinks he does. his day goes from an utter mess to him being full of complete curiosity when he spots a white rabbit with a pocket watch. soon, sam finds himself in a new place, almost like he’s landed on a different planet full of random creatures, endless tea parties, advice-giving caterpillars and even grinning cats. is it all just in his head or is wonderland really real as the caterpillar says?

THE WHITE RABBIT/GENE HUNT: late, late, late! that’s all gene really worries about. gene is one of those kinds of people when it comes to still having his mind, and his head, intact. sometimes he’ll venture out into the ‘real’ world to do little tasks for the queen, or just things for himself. he might look cute and fuzzy, but he’s more like a brash, loud talker. deep down, though, maybe he’s got more of a softer side to himself.. if anyone can even find it. he’s been noted to change forms at will, going from a small rabbit to something that can only be described as ‘human’, as everyone else ‘upstairs’ likes to call it. it’s strange how no one’s asked why he has rabbit ears and a fluffy tail up there..

THE MAD HATTER/CHRIS SKELTON: just a warning, nothing he says makes any sense. the mad hatter doesn’t go by any other names. other than hatter, hattie, mister hatter.. you get the idea, he likes hats. he enjoys obsessing over tea, which he does a LOT. he sees himself as proper, polite, pleasant. y’know, words that sound nice! he’s also really into musicals, so he’ll probably start singing out of nowhere to give himself a ‘big entrance’ of sorts. to him, up is down and big is small. nothing matters to him except his tea. hatter has never seen what the real world looks like, though others believe he’s at least seen a glimpse of it. some say he used to be one of the ‘normal’ ones before he fell down the hole and decided to stay in wonderland entirely. but— that’s nonsense! he’s been in wonderland his whole life. how could he possibly know what life is like up there? unless, he forgot..

THE CHESHIRE CAT/RAY CARLING: this one is interesting, mysterious even. he was the first one to show up in wonderland. hell, you could even say he made wonderland himself.. if you believe that. unlike the mad hatter, he goes by more than just ‘cheshire’. he allows other people to call him raymond, since he likes longer names. ( shorter ones can be such a bore.. ) he’s as polite as the hatter, but has a nasty bite when you get on his nerves. like gene, ray has two forms. it was difficult for him to choose between the two of them. cat or human? human or cat? one day he decided that he personally prefers things when they’re mixed together, almost in between. he’s been waiting for the day where something different happens in wonderland. it’s been the same, day in and day out. but maybe, due to a certain man in leather, he can help change wonderland entirely. for good.

THE MARCH HARE/ANNIE CARTWRIGHT: other than the cheshire cat, one of the mad hatter’s friends is a hare by name of annie. she’s not exactly as mad as he is, but more like something to keep him from crossing the line between crazy and tame and going overboard towards crazy. she’s soft-spoken and welcoming, especially when sam ends up visiting them during their unbirthday parties. annie prefers her ‘human’ form to her hare form because someday she wishes to see what it’s like in sam’s world. maybe when sam figures it out, he can take her and the rest of them with him. then again, she’s not sure if anyone is ready for ‘crazy’ to bleed in with ‘normal’.

THE CATERPILLAR/NELSON: he’s one of the first wonderland inhabitants sam meets on his way to follow gene. he’s able to help sam grow back to his normal size, and even gives him advice on where to go, who to see, what to do, that sort of stuff. he does play a few pranks on him but nelson means well, he swears! before sam leaves to venture off to who-knows-where, nelson warns him in a much different accent and sam almost feels like he’s talking to someone else. he warns him of a grinning manic, one who’s deemed as dangerous and untrustworthy. maybe the cheshire cat, perhaps?

THE QUEEN OF HEARTS/PHYLLIS DOBBS: the ruler of wonderland might sound nice, but sometimes even she has her breaking points. agressive and sweet, sometimes a mix between the two. sam is pointed in her direction when he gets advice from raymond, but due to the cat’s tricks, sam almost loses his head.. until a trial is called for. she’s human, just as the mad hatter is. she’s also probably never seen the real world, like the rest of them. but sam feels like he’s met someone with her attitude before back home..

love exploring the difference in work-life balance between roy and jade. tbh, roy doesn’t really have a balance. his identity is public which ultimately makes him more accessible than his peers who prefer to keep their names secret, for a while he was living in titans tower which further blurred the lines between work and personal life, and all of his equipment (suits, weapons, etc.) is very easily accessible. then there’s jade, whose identity is such a secret that whether or not her real name is "jade" is called into question, her laboratory is separately located from her home instead of an extension of it, & there is a very clear line of separation between cheshire and jade.

I got some writing feedback today and I fear it may have broken me.

It wasn’t bad, or even poor feedback. It just kind of hurt.

Me having a bit of a meltdown below the cut.

So, some explanation.

Back in January, I entered the Cheshire Novel Prize. Basic sort of contest, near 2000 entrants, you enter your novel, 100 get through to Round Two, like 10 make Round Three, and the winner is selected from them. The first round results were announced back in April, but it's old hat to me because this is my third year entering.

And I have never made it past the first round.

I've been entering the same novel, Stitches of the Mind, for three years, polishing it up more and more each time. But I've never so much as made it to round two.

Now, I’m not surprised by this, and it’s mostly fine. Sort of upsetting, but my rational side tells me its fine. 100 spots out of 2000? 5% chance? How likely is that?

BUT one of the selling points of CNP is that every entrant, no matter how far they get, will receive feedback on their entry. Which is great!

This year though, the contest did a bit of a number on me. My self confidence in my writing, and all around need to be validated, has been a little fragile the past year, and the CNP do a lot to build tension concerning who’s made it through, so it was a long tense build up, months in advance, to a simple disappointing loss.

But I still had the feedback to look forward to.

The feedback usually takes a while to go out, there are a lot of people to email, and I was patient… mostly. Started to get a little antsy by mid-September. But today, 23rd of September, my feedback arrived. And it was everything I should have expected. A lot of nice praise, some stuff I can improve (though that was a little vague) and a final summary of some general tips.

And buried in all that feedback was this line:

"There is so much to like about this novel, and it was so close to progressing in the competition."

And that comment felt like it cracked my brain.

I was so close to progressing. And I didn't even know. But I'd still lost!

And I'd just been given feedback that, had I known it six months ago, could have meant I finally got to Round Two, which is honestly all I could hope for.

But discovering that I was that CLOSE TO SUCCEEDING!

FUCK!

I... don't really know what to do with all this. I know there's another editing run in my future, because of course there is, but I am still struggling to process this news. I'd have killed to get to Round Two, and receive even that little bit of validation that this novel is worthwhile! But no. I missed it by inches, if the feedback is to be believed. After three years I still missed it by inches.

I'm just a little exhausted now.

I think I need to go to bed. I'm a little sleep deprived anyway, having stayed up too late last night, trying to track down my past CNP feedback on an old computer. And then the new one miraculously arrived today. What are the odds?

But yeah, that's the meltdown I'm having.
