Apologies for the quality of my English, I am definitely a bit rusty with words (and still not a native speaker), but I will try my best.

Life on Mars was a huge part of my fandom life a few years ago – the ending, especially, was so satisfying to me that I never even watched the sequel, Ashes to Ashes.

LoM spoilers ahead + some possibly triggering content (cw death talk)

I know A2A invalidates that theory, but I absolutely adored the idea that Sam's experience was all in his own head. A vivid, fantasised world where cops act like in the shows that Sam used to watch as a kid*, where one can relive childhood memories and explore what could have been. A world that feels as real and important at the real world. An inner world.

[*This includes some obviously problematic things and I'm glad they made Sam react to at least some of them – for a show about cops, LoM did say ACAB a lot at the time.]

And the ending, oh, the ending.

Sam's choice to return to his own fantasy world. I loved it.

I saw LoM and its conclusion as a heartfelt tribute to fiction and to our inner fantasy worlds.

It resonated with me. I had just spent a few years coping with grief and loss, and unable to remotely enjoy anything fictional, feeling like fantasy worlds didn't mean shit compared to the real world, with all its tragedies and injustice.

And then came along this little show, with its main protagonist feeling trapped and desperate and lonely and hurting... like I was.

As the episodes went by, as Sam progressed and processed things and started enjoying his experience, something sparked up in me – "hey, actually, your inner world is a very important place, it is yours to inhabit and build and retreat to whenever you need to".

Yeah, I realise this is prooobably a far-fetched interpretation, but it's mine – it helped me pick up the pieces of my own broken world and it was just what I needed.

Important disclaimer: I think Tony Blair especially and Gordon Brown much less so but also are bastards and I do not like them.

This video uses the actual font that the labour party uses! The font colour is slightly different though bc capcut doesn't allow you to type RGB or hex codes in. Yes I went onto labour's branding guide for this fan edit. God help me.

I have discovered a slightly unnerving skill I seem to have now, which is the ability to, at will, summon from my mind an episode and scene from life on mars matching every situation. I kept going through the getty image search for tony blair going "oh, he's on a bus there. Sam stands in front of a bus in the episode where they get taken hostage." GET OUT OF MY BRAIN
