Cryptid of the Day: Cherufe
Description: Cherufe is a creature found in Mapuche mythology of indigenous people of southern and central Chile. Described as an evil being made of rock and magma, it is said to lurk in volcanos and magma pools. The only way to abate the monster is to throw a sacrificial person into the volcano.

Okay, story time! I went deep into mythology for this one, and out came this Cherufe – a creature born from volcanic fire and pure shadow. Honestly, the whole process was intense, kind of like the creature itself! I was really trying to imagine molten rock actually hardening into this monstrous shape, and then those wings just igniting with infernal flames. My goal was to really capture that raw, untamed power in every single detail, you know? From the texture of the lava to that super menacing look in its eye.
So, tell me honestly, what does this design make you feel? Reblog and drop a comment with your interpretation – I'm really curious to hear!

The Hollow Ideas!
Hey there! So, I was thinking about the Hollow fan projects for the first time in a while (finally getting creativity and writing motivation back yay!) and I had a question for all you Hollowers still out there. :0
What is your The Hollow wishlist? Elements, locations, creatures, things you would have liked to have seen explored or depicted in a hypothetical continuation of the series.
I know I've personally always wanted a "lava level" in the show, since lava levels are so ubiquitous with the concept of a video game. Even had a dream about it once, which might merit an art piece some time, of Adam being suspended above a huge lava pit by a giant molten rock hand coming out from the lava.
Lemme know what you'd wanna see! :0 I wanna know! -Cy and Luc

Since we got reincarnated, does that mean there are any mystical animal roaming around?
And if so what are the common household pets that people have and what are the more exotic? ( Totally not me asking if we can have a majestic unicorn as a pet 👀👀 )
Well, Anon, mystical creatures used to roam Vathilia. Remember that before the fog, the people of Vathilia were human, so they wouldn’t have dared to venture into these mystical creatures’ lairs to capture them as household pets, lol. 😂
Here's a small list of these Mystical Creatures;
Specters
Doppelgangers
Kitsune
Basilisk
Kraken
Sirens
Nuckelavee – This creature brings destruction and diseases to any land it roams.
Barometz
Akkorokamu
Cherufe
Encantado
Unicorns
After the fog swept through Vathilia, these mystical creatures nearly went extinct. The gods, having abandoned the land, allowed all life forms to lose the privilege of giving birth. The fog disrupted the natural order of the world itself, causing irreparable damage.
Rumor has it that after the fog swept Vathilia, the few remaining mystical creatures were captured. These mad men—scientists, researchers, or just deranged individuals—conducted twisted experiments. Others sought to discover what would happen if they consumed the flesh of these mystical beings.
These cruel individuals didn’t just stop at experimentation. They took parts of the mystical creatures—claws, fangs, scales, and even organs—and began to fuse them with other creatures. Some would even harvest blood and organs to sell on the black market. The blood of these creatures was especially sought after for its rumored power—those who consumed it experienced a rapid manifestation of Runic Energy.
What the sellers conveniently left out of the transaction was that those who used this blood had to keep consuming it to maintain their strength. If they stopped, their bodies would rapidly deteriorate, leading to madness—or worse.
♡♡♡♡♡
Ah! This revelation might have disappointed you, Anon. Apologies for taking almost a year to get back to you on this, and I hope some beautiful, random things have been happening to you over the past few months! Thanks again for your ask. ❤️

A SEA OF CHANGE - My theory’s !!!
Okay SO recently we’ve been getting a lot of stuff for Matthew’s short story (I think cuz the book is coming out September-November) so I wanted to discuss some of my thoughts and feelings about it!! <33 also, a lot of this information comes from here !! <3
What the story is about:
Now I’m sure everyone knows the premise of this book! Basically just about Matthew’s journey on an ocean liner, where he encounters an infestation of vampires. Tbh from that art that she posted earlier today, I have a feeling that MAYBE this book will giving demon esque death on the Nile vibes !! Idk like, kinda giving mystery 👓👓
This art:
Tumblr media
Now I’m sure everyone has seen this art 20 times today. But again, it’s just so pretty and vibey that I wanted to share it again and share my thoughts on it.
FIRST OFF- MATTHEW FAIRCHILD WHY ARE YOU BRINGING YOUR DOG ON A BOAT!!?? FREE OSCAR!!! Jokes aside. They look SO. SO. SO CUTE 😭😭 if anyone is Matthew’s ride or die it is 100% Oscar.
To me this picture is kind of giving that Matthew is maybe investigating something. I think Oscar is kind of the one who warns him about the shadow/demon the left side of him (Oscar is looking worried at it and Matthew looks down at Oscar ect ect ect … guys I took art class for like 2 years trust) now maybe in this scene Matthew is being set up for a trap by maybe one of the vampires???? It could be that the vampires are working for some kind of demon.
Now this demon kind of reminds me of the Cherufe demon that Aline, Alec and Helen fought in TRSOM
—>
Tumblr media
Now there’s also the big possibility it could be an entirely NEW demon buttt just making possible connections! Could be a cute call back.
Matthew’s love interest:
Now if you didn’t know- Matthew is confirmed to be having a love interest in this novel. (Cassie confirming it!) So I’m actually really curious on who/how it will be set up in this short story!!
Obviously we won’t be getting everything of Matthew and this strange characters romance, but I honestly do think this book will Matthew opening himself up for that kind of relationship. I think it’ll be really sweet and cute, and again another part of Matthew’s journey of letting himself love and love others.
I think it’s cool to think if the character will be a downworlder or a shadowhunter. Obviously whoever it is they will probably meet on this ocean linear or wherever else Matthew travels to. Now this is a theory I’ve seen someone else say- but it could be Matthew who starts the trend of shadowhunter families moving to New York/America, so I’m thinking whoever his love interest is- will be living in America!! And Matthew will be prompted to live/visit them.
I also don’t think we will get the entirety of them in this story!! Obviously this book really isn’t that long (if I said the whole book should have been abt Matthew well… that’s another day). But I do think this is like an introduction for them to have other short stories written about them!! I’ve also always thought that TLH would get a short story book (this the bane chronicles, TFTSA, GOTSM ect ect) <3!!! I just want to see Matthew happy 😞
Anyways whoever it is- I hope Matthew gets the love he deserves 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️
The snippets:
Again, if you didn’t know- we’ve gotten three snippets for this short story so far.
I think alot of these snippets indicate kind of how Matthew is holding up/dealing with the events of chain of thorns.
Especially dealing with the loss of kit, and also dealing with his sobriety. I really do think that this story will really just be showing Matthew’s healing journey, dealing with all these things and really just coming to terms with himself.
With the snippet we got today —>
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was definitely the longest one we’ve gotten yet, and probably the one where we’ve seen the more plot relevant stuff. I’m super interested to see how all this vampire stuff plays out!! And I’m very interested in Slyvian!! Is he the love interest?? Who knows.
ANYWAYS SORRY THIS IS LONG I HAVE SO MANY THIUGHTS

Best of the Reptiles in Media - 04 - Sislo
Hello again! Today, we're going to focus on a very special scaly character. One that pretty much nicks all of my boxes as to what I look for when I see reptilian protagonists. A guy who's story is one of bloodshed, love, heartache, and above all, redemption.
I'm of course talking about the protagonist of indie comic book artist Marcel Rocha AKA @rochasaurusrex 's magnum opus, Flowers of Etrea. Namely, Sislo Haeos.
Tumblr media
(All art here is by the man himself, BTW)
Sislo here is what happens when we take what would typically be a member of a bad guy race in a fantasy world, flip the script, and make him the main character. That alone is a pitch that I'm going to take, hook line and sinker. I cannot emphasize how much of a power move it is to make the hero of a story the sort of being you'd expect to be, at best, the minion of the main villain or something. After all, lizard folk can't be heroes, right? They're too icky and gnarly and scary, right?
WRONG...sort of. Sislo may be a good guy lizard, but there's an aspect of his character that puts him above a simple case of wish fulfillment:
Tumblr media
But I digress for now, time for an introduction.
Sislo is a Cherufe, a reptilian humanoid species native to the lands of Etrea. His past is muddy, but what we do know is that he was a former slave to the Iron Industry, which is basically the Empire, currently making everyone's lives worse by taking far more than they give. Currently, he lives with his wife, a kindly and optimistic dryad named Tetheril. However, duty comes knocking when her father falls ill, and only a specific flower (a rose, that is) can cure him. Said flower can only be found within the Iron Industry's walls, forcing Sislo to confront his former masters...and so much more.
So, we have a huge burly and only slightly surly lizardman who's in a healthy interspecies relationship with an adorable woman out to go on a humble goal that naturally snowballs into an epic full of friends and foes both new and old. And it is equal parts compelling and awesome!
Sislo as a character, at least within one's first impression, is a fairly standard protagonist of a gritty fantasy story, albeit a lot of the rougher aspects are toned down a bit so that nothing's a total downer. Yes, he has his hang-ups (ooooh, boy does he ever), but he's not a total stick in the mud. In fact, he can be an amusing doofus at times. It's nice to see a lead like that. One capable of feeling emotional weight while being able to actually crack a smile every so often.
Tumblr media
The biggest highlight of Sislo's character is his relationship with his wife. Unsurprisingly, it's mostly based on Rocha's relationship with his own real-life wife. So little surprise that the Cherufe and the dryad have perhaps the most wholesome thing you'll ever see a big scary lizardman be a part of in media (at least for now). Despite being complete opposites in terms of personality, they couldn't be a better fit for one another. What makes it work is how they compliment each other. Sislo is the muscle, but at the same time he provides Tetheril a source of confidence and protection for the journey (granted, both can kick serious ass, but he's especially eager to jump into a fight when the opportunity presents itself). Tetheril, meanwhile, offers him a rock, a means of knowing that for all of his faults, he's a very good person at heart, and he'll always have her to remind him. Really, most of the reason I read this story to the end was to see them just being relationship goals over and over again.
But then comes the twist. And this is where the layers thing comes into play.
ALSO, I'M ABOUT TO TALK ABOUT SOME MAJOR SPOILERS RIGHT NOW! SPOILERS DOWN BELOW!
*
*
*
You remember that part about Sislo being a slave to the Iron Industry? Well, the finale of part 2 has a rather, ahem, shocking revelation about that. Main antagonist Ondiox points out to Tetheril (while poor Sislo is forced to watch, no less) that there was no slavery. The sob story that was the Cherufe's backstory is a fabrication.
Tumblr media
Sislo didn't suffer under the Iron Industry. He helped found it.
Ondiox freed him as a child from an actual state of slavery before they and a couple others basically tore the old order apart, making way for a brand new empire. And Sislo not only butchered and ate Ondiox's enemies alongside his half-brother Zama (who's basically Sislo if he had no reservations to speak of), he RELISHED in it. For creatures like him, eating fresh meat and blood is akin to having a major drug addiction, and Sislo had one Hell of a supply.
Then one day, Ondiox had him attack an innocent village, and all it took was one gesture of feeble protest from a kid for Sislo to realize that he had not only brought upon an even worse regime by helping his rescuer/father figure, but he had become the very monster anyone would peg him as just by a glance. In that moment, he disowned Ondiox and the Iron Industry...and nearly got killed for it before striking out on his own and finding Tetheril one day.
.....yeesh.
So yeah, Sislo may be a subversion of the Evil Reptile trope, but that's only because he played it straight for the longest time, and it horrified him. But really, while they say that he lied about being a slave…the way I read it, he was technically telling the truth. Yeah, he didn't actually kill anyone against his own will, he clearly enjoyed feasting on people as per his primal nature, but he was still a puppet of an ego-maniacal dictator. The chain of oppression wasn't there, but it was THERE. It's just that Ondiox was very good at hiding it.
And after all of that is revealed, after that atomic bomb of a revelation, you bet your back scales I was expecting Tetheril to leave the man who had spend countless years feeding her a false narrative due to how much the actual one left him broken and traumatized at himself. I mean, come one, the "liar revealed" trope was just rearing its ugly head in that moment...
Tumblr media
..BUT NO.
Real talk, this was what happened in the original story, back when it was a novel. But I think I know why it's now out of print. Tetheril isn't going to just abandon her husband and the love of her life. It's clear as day to her that there is nothing she could say or do to him that he hasn't already said or done to himself. The man who made her life Heaven on Earth very clearly DESPISES the monster he once was, and for that, she thinks he more than deserves a chance to show how much he's changed.
I could have not have read this part of the story at a better time in my life. Flowers of Etrea was my wake-up call that I've made my mistakes, but the only awful people in this world are the ones who look back on their ill deeds and don't reflect on them at all. Those who actively choose to be better, to learn and grow, they can find redemption no matter what. And they'll find it doubly so when we are there to give them a chance. Now, I'm not saying I've ever done anything as awful as assist a dictator in taking over the world, but there have always been times when I've felt that I've made careless decisions in which I did wrong by those I loved.
Sislo is proof that if I really care about being a good person now, there's nothing I've done in the past that I can't overcome.
Oh, and the final confrontation between him and Ondiox is just one awesome moment after another. I won't talk about it too much, but it does contain the most badass exchange ever, and this time in the context of something NOT directed by Michael Bay.
Tumblr media
If you want to see how it all ends and/or just more of this amazing protagonist, GO BUY "FLOWERS OF ETREA"! All three parts are available on Amazon, and there's an Omnibus coming out very soon if you're willing to wait!
But yeah, that's Sislo for you. Just a perfect fantasy lizardman whose story has been incredibly inspiring for me. He taught me to forgive myself for the mistakes of my past, he's just a super charming and cool creature to begin with, and the love he and his wife have for each other might as well have "RELATIONSHIP GOALS" emblazoned on every panel featuring them.

My next mythological creature is the Cherufe, from the Mapuche in Chile. There wasn't much description for this thing so its mostly just my interpretation of evil, magma, rock, and humanoid.

So gunmar how do you feel about demons and their way of punishing humans that have done wrong?
"Some of my whelpkin are demons. One of them is the greatest fisherman you'll ever meet, the other has tamed a cherufe and commands his every move. I think demons and Trolls get on well."

✂ If they had to choose one weapon to carry forever, what would it be?
"....my ruby ring. It actually came from my homeland. It's very old, and very powerful. I say ruby, but in truth, it's actually an exceedingly rare sorceror's stone, stolen from the nest of a wicked cherufe. In a true emergency, it could fuel nearly any spell I need."

This actually literally happened to Sonnia Criid when Cherufe did the burning man thing. Shame she lived
If you take a masked or helmeted character's headgear off they literally die so painfully its really cruel and awful to do 💔 that's his exoskeleton shes like a buuuug... face reveals for character's like this are the devils idea....

I wish I could find more substantial art of her, but this was my OC Florence. She was a post-series antagonist Youtuber (or whatever they'd call it for trademark issue avoidance) who got kind of obsessed with cryptid sightings after the events of the finale, as did a lot of other people! That's how she got so many eyes on her coverage, plus people wanted something to replace Weird World.
She is antithetical to the secret scientists where she thinks the world should know about cryptids and so on, so the Saturdays have to tread murky water of figuring out what they can do to shut her down without suspicion, ignore her, or... maybe let her and others like her be a stepping stone to a more mixed world--that is, until her coverage starts to result in harm.
I think there is a lot to be said about the post-finale world of TSS and how there is still value in secrecy for safety. None of this would've happened had they not been involved in such a widescale threat. But it did happen and, while I guess you could apply some superhero logic of "well the story needs people to believe certain things so they just do", the amount of people who WON'T believe it's a hoax has gotta be mounting.
So how does the world move forward after so much did become more known after the events of the series, from cherufe news coverage to Paris melting to this? Is it better to maintain the status quo to prevent harm, or is some of the world ready to embrace change? Etc.
