About those Wilbury names…
• Nelson Wilbury (aka George Harrison) — Dhani Harrison: “I chose my Wilbury name. My dad had Nelson Wilbury, after Nelson Piquet, the Brazilian Formula One champion. And I chose Ayrton Wilbury, after Ayrton Senna, [another] Brazilian Formula One champion, so we could keep it in the family, you know?” - Hi Res Audio Central, October 16, 2017 • Charlie T. Wilbury Jr. (aka Tom Petty) — Tom Petty: “George had Derek Taylor write an entire history of the Wilbury family. And the father was named Charles Truscott Wilbury. And I took his name as Charles Truscott Wilbury Jnr.” - Breakfast With The Beatles, July 1, 2007 • Lefty Wilbury (aka Roy Orbison) — “Roy took the name ‘Lefty Wilbury’ in homage of the country singer Lefty Frizzell.” - “Roy Orbison: In Dreams,” PRX • Lucky Wilbury (aka Bob Dylan) — Presumably, this is derived from the Dylan song “Idiot Wind,” and the lyric, “I can’t help it if I’m lucky.” • Otis Wilbury (aka Jeff Lynne) — Jeff mentioned in an interview available on the official Wilburys YouTube channel that he chose the name Otis simply because it’s the complete opposite of his own name. Round Two
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Led Zeppelin
Defeated opponents: White Lion
Formed in: 1968
Genres: Hard rock, blues rock, folk rock
Lineup: Robert Plant – vocals, harmonica
Jimmy Page – guitars
John Paul Jones – bass, keyboards
John Bonham – drums, percussion
Albums from the 80s:
Coda (1982)
Propaganda: Squeezing in here with a technicality as they were still an active band for the majority of 1980, and the surviving members reunited in 1985 to play Live Aid. But really, what needs to be said? Robert Plant was the proverbial "golden god" up onstage with his shirt wide open, Jimmy Page unseated Eric Clapton to be the true guitar god, and Bonzo's drums pounded harder than thunder.
The Traveling Wilburys
Defeated opponents: Pink Floyd
Formed in: 1988
Genres: Rock, country rock, folk rock, roots rock
Lineup:  Nelson Wilbury (George Harrison) – lead and harmony vocals, guitars
Otis Wilbury (Jeff Lynne) – lead and harmony vocals, electric and acoustic guitars, bass guitar
Charlie T. Wilbury Jr (Tom Petty) – lead and harmony vocals, acoustic guitar
Lefty Wilbury (Roy Orbison) – lead and harmony vocals, acoustic guitar
Lucky Wilbury (Bob Dylan) – lead and harmony vocals, acoustic guitar
Albums from the 80s:
The Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 (1988)
Propaganda: They're not exactly like any other 80s band at the time. They're older, they're in their prime, and they're not bound by any contracts- they just want to record music and have fun together, and they have so much love and respect for each other, and you can feel it in the songs they make. (Plus, I think everyone's had a crush on at least one of them- I know I have.)

Lucky Loves Charlie T. Jr.
Lucky Wilbury, bka Bob Dylan, took a rare detour from his established setlist of Frank Sinatra covers Saturday night to honor Charlie T. Wilbury Jr., neé Tom Petty (aka Muddy Wilbury).
At his Oct. 21 concert in Colorado on the day after what should have been Petty’s 67th birthday, Dylan surprised fans by playing the latter’s 1991 song “Learning to Fly” during the encore.
Even on low-quality, fan-shot footage from YouTube, it’s evident Dylan and his band handled this performance with care, as the arrangement is obviously rehearsed and Dylan - seated at a piano - enunciates each word clearly.
Check it out before the notoriously fussy Dylan has it removed.
Petty died of a heart attack Oct. 2, just a week after he and the Heartbreakers wrapped a successful, 40th-anniversary tour, leaving Dylan and Jeff (“Otis”) Lynne as the only surviving Wilburys.

Remembering Charlie T. Jr. on his birthday.
Q: “You’ve all been in or are in other groups. What’s the best thing about being in the Wilburys?” Jeff Lynne: “One of the great things is that I get to work with people I admire a lot, good friends. It’s a lot of fun, basically.” Tom Petty: “I would agree with that. There’s just a great deal of input. On a musical level, you learn many things that you wouldn’t have picked up if you handled things yourself. I couldn’t play the ukulele before I was in the Wilburys.” George Harrison: “Apart from the obvious thing — that we all get energized by each other — it’s fun to hang out with these guys. It’s like a little social club. It gives us an excuse to get together:” - HITS, November 19, 1990 “George came along, and we just got so close; it was like we had known each other in some other life or something. We were pals within minutes of meeting each other. I remember him saying to me a couple of days after we’d known each other — he’s just hugging me, holding me, saying, ‘Tommy, you’re in my life now whether you like it or not.’ It was like I’d been sent the very person I needed. He healed a lot of wounds.” - Petty: The Biography (2015) “There was a lot of laughing in the band and George was the ringleader of the whole thing. We called him the ‘idea man.’ But, God, I miss him, you know, I miss him in the night a lot.” - Tom Petty, Concert for George microsite
“That was a really good, good place for me to be at that time in my life. I really kind of felt like friends took me in. The nicest thing about the Wilburys for all of us was that not any one of us had to carry the load. I think it freed us all a great deal. George had wanted a band for a long time; he hated being a solo artist. It was George's dream. And I'm just glad it got to come true for him. We were proud being Wilburys and it was a lot of fun, but the greatest thing to me was there were some really long-lasting friendships made, and that's a kind of gift that you just don't get all the time.” - Tom Petty, Billboard, November 28, 2005 (x)

Tom Petty, 1950–2017
I drew this in November, 1991, because Tom Petty was one of the musicians that got me through high school.
"You belong among the wildflowers."
