“I loved End Of The Line. I remember the day [George] wrote it. He had started it off on the piano. And we all kind of sat in a group. His enthusiasm was very contagious.” - Tom Petty, Rolling Stone, January 17, 2002 “[Roy Orbison’s] funeral was only about a day before the [End Of The Line] video. But we just tried to go on and hope that we did him justice. And it turned out to be a curious song for the next single, you know, 'the end of the line.’ But I think it - you write these songs and then it’s funny how events come down and later on when you hear the song it can mean so much more than when you were writing it.” - Tom Petty, BBC Radio 2  “Sort of like Carl Perkins says on a lot of his songs, ‘Well, it’s alright.’ If you’re gonna be an optimist then it’s gotta be alright. If you happen to be a peg-legged old pirate who’s trying to make a Wilbury album, it’s still alright.” - George Harrison, Genesis Publications

“[George] Harrison says the idea for combining the voices of the three surviving Beatles [for ‘Free As A Bird’] with that of the late Lennon originated in the late '80s when Harrison was part of the Traveling Wilburys with Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, and Roy Orbison. When Orbison died of a heart attack in '88, his band mates looked around for a replacement and decided on… Elvis. ‘[We] talked to his estate,’ says Harrison. 'They loved the idea of Elvis being in the Wilburys, so they gave us the rights to a song. The idea was to put Elvis onto a multitrack machine and take away the backing. We’d all sing this song and when it came to the chorus, we’d bring up the voice of “Aaron Wilbury.” We were going to do that, but we never did because at that point I thought it seemed a bit too gimmicky. I was talking to Yoko, however, and telling her this idea, and she said, “I think I’ve got a tape of John,” and I said, “We’ll do that with John and make a new song.” So later she dug around and brought this tape, and, really, that’s how it got done.’"- “On the Record - George recalls the inspiration for the Beatles ‘reunion’,” TV GUIDE, November 18-24, 1995 (x)
