hello, if you have time please could you respond to the Guardian article "If you want to save the world, veganism isn’t the answer"? thank you
Ahhh, her again. She does the same thing here as she always does, comparing realistic arable farming solutions to idealised animal agriculture which exists almost nowhere, and is how a vanishingly small minority of anyone’s meat, dairy and eggs are being produced.
She raises points that we are largely all already aware of, that crop farming can be harmful too, which of course also includes the crops that farmed animals are fed on. She touts the old fantasies of 'regenerative grazing' which is a contradiction in terms that has debunked many times over, perhaps most thoroughly in this report.
I think the best response though, is one from George Monbiot in his excellent book Regenesis: Feeding the World Without Devouring the Planet. Monbiot knows Isabella Tree personally, and has done the maths on her own farm:
"Only when livestock numbers fall so far that their husbandry scarcely qualifies as food production is animal farming compatible with a rich, functional ecosystem. For example, the Knepp Wildland project, run by my friends Isabella Tree and Charlie Burrell, where small herds of cattle and pigs roam freely across a large estate, is often cited as an example of how meat and wildlife and can be reconciled (..)"
"If their system were to be rolled out across 10 per cent of the UK’s farmland, and if, as it’s champions propose, we obtained our meat this way, it would furnish each of the people of the United Kingdom with 420 grams per head, enough for around three meals. This means a 99.5 per cent cut in our consumption (…) If all the farmland in the U.K. were managed this way, it would provide us with 75kcal per day (one thirteenth of our requirement) in the form of meat, and nothing else."
As you can see, this is pure fantasy. People point to examples like these despite them being almost unworkable at any kind of scale, and even in these idyllic, thoroughly unrealistic examples, animals are still being bred, exploited and killed unnecessarily.
Yes, plant agriculture has an impact too, but it is far more sustainable and less resource intensive, producing more food using less land. Even if you ignore animal rights entirely (as Tree always does), plant agriculture and alternative proteins are just objectively a better way to feed our population, which ever way you spin it.

“'We chose to file this case on May 1, in solidarity with workers around the world, because ending forced prison labor in ADOC isn’t just about stopping the State’s extractive profiteering from the labor of Black people – both inside and outside of prisons. It’s also about eliminating the control that forced prison labor enables the State to exercise over Black people – an extension of the control exerted by the State through slavery, the Black Codes, convict leasing, and Jim Crow,' said CJ Sandley, Staff Attorney at the Center for Constitutional Rights, which represents the workers through its Southern Regional Office.
The six plaintiffs – Trayveka Stanley, Reginald Burrell, Dexter Avery, Charlie Gray, Melvin Pringle, and Ranquel Smith – have all been punished or threatened with punishment for resisting forced work. ... 'I am motivated by my passion to fight for an end to all injustice. That passion burns brighter than my fears. We must stand for something or we will fall for anything. This lawsuit is about the unpaid, overbearing state jobs that I, as well as my fellow inmates, are being forced to work against our will. According to Article I, Section 32, this is against the law,' says Plaintiff Trayveka Stanley, currently incarcerated at Montgomery Women’s Facility in Montgomery, Alabama.
According to Plaintiff Reginald Burrell, who is incarcerated at Decatur Work Release in Decatur, Alabama: 'The most influential public officials in the State of Alabama today remain loyal to and act in unity with their racist slave legacy from the Confederacy and the Jim Crow era, continuing to deliberately make, enforce, and defend bad policy decisions and practices, knowing it results in the demise, disadvantages, and disenfranchisement of poor whites and African-Americans, perpetuating hopelessness, despair, and excessive suffering in our lives today, and knowing it induces, in many circumstances, desperate choices under duress, to give themselves reason to enslave us through incarceration by the Alabama Department of Corrections for the sole purpose of continuing forced labor, slavery, and involuntary servitude in this state.'”

In 2020, Tim Walz pardoned Myon Burrell, a violent gang member who shot and killed an 11-year-old little girl who was doing homework at her kitchen table in Minneapolis in 2002.
In 2023, he was arrested again. He fought with police who pulled him over for driving erratically. They found an illegal gun, marijuana, and methamphetamines on him. He was bailed out by the by the Minnesota Freedom Fund, the same fund Kamala Harris told people to donate to during the BLM riots.
In May of 2024, Burrell was arrested again for a controlled substance crime.
Democrats like Harris and Walz always have “empathy” for violent street criminals like Burrell, and they insult the victims and their families. Disgusting.

Rewilding the World: Dispatches from the Conservation Revolution, Caroline Fraser (2009)
Around 2011, I came across the concept of ‘rewilding’, and having looked online for further reading material, found and ordered this wonderful book, one of the very first to be published on the subject. In it, Caroline Fraser takes us to rewilding projects the world over, and the explorations of the ecology, sociology, and politics behind bringing back wild nature are just excellent. It was my first introduction to how we don’t have to accept the continued death of the natural world all around us; that in most cases nature has an immense power to rebound if we stop the activities that are constantly preventing it from doing so; that there is hope. I often dip back into this one.
Keeping the Wild: Against the Domestication of Earth, edited by George Wuerthner, Eileen Crist, and Tom Butler (2014)
A compilation of pieces from a total of 22 writers on the global ecological crisis, this brilliant book examines what can – and must – be done to reverse it. While reading it in 2015, this was another victim of my terrible habit of underlining more important passages in pencil and making notes in the margins. But many of the pieces in this book have more lines underlined than not, thereby making the exercise somewhat ridiculous. I also marked each one out of ten for future reference, nearly all of them scoring nine or ten (one even got twelve out of ten!). Its companion volume ‘Protecting the Wild: Parks and Wilderness, the Foundation for Conservation’, edited by the same three authors (2015), is equally good.
Wilding: The Return of Nature to a British Farm, Isabella Tree (2018)
This hugely inspirational book charts the journey of a 3,500-acre farm in West Sussex, England, from industrial chemical-soaked and diesel-powered agriculture to a form of extremely High Nature Value farming. The owners, Isabella Tree and Charlie Burrell, took the incredibly courageous decision to move in a totally different direction in 2000, having increasingly struggled to make conventional farming work financially. But they were also aware of the desperate plight of nature in their area, including their own land. Following the cessation of intensive farming practices, they were witness to the return of abundant and diverse populations of wildlife, including many rare species, a remarkably powerful demonstration of how nature can and will return if we only let it.
Wild Embrace: Connecting to the Wonder of Ireland’s Natural World, Anja Murray (2023)
Only just released on March 9th, Anja Murray’s ‘Wild Embrace’ takes us on a fantastic adventure of rediscovery: of the wild nature that still hangs on in pieces here and there all around in Ireland, and of the place within every one of us that yearns for reconnection with this hidden world. You rightly won’t find any avoidance of the desperate state of Irish nature in this book, on the contrary. But hope for recovery is identified in the “three-legged stool of wonder, knowledge and action.” In other words, by deeply engaging with the wild once more, learning a little of how ecosystems really work, and rolling up our sleeves to finally do what needs doing, nature can, and will, come roaring back. A hugely important, and simply delightful, book.
