King Crimson Releases Hybridized Live-Studio Version of “One More Red Nightmare”
Splicing a vintage studio recording into a modern stage performance, King Crimson producer Alex “Stormy” Mundy created a hybridized rendition of “One More Red Nightmare.”
Using the July 18, 2018, rendition as his template, Mundy overdubbed the original John Wetton vocals from the 1974 Red sessions and stuck Ian McDonald’s in-studio saxophone licks in the channel opposite of Mel Collins’ live recreation.
“Mel is panned right and Ian is panned left,” Mundy said in a statement.
“I had to edit John slightly to fit the live version, but they certainly have played it very close to the studio tempo, and of course, the tuning is the same. The same with Ian, gently moving him to match.”
It was likely great fun for the producer to create. And though it’s not entirely necessary, this “timestream(ed)” Franken-song is similarly a gas for listeners.

"On the first day [of rehearsal in 1972 (after Peter Sinfield was fired)], [Mel] Collins duly presented a piece to the seated Fripp. "I wasn't brimming with confidence anyway, but I put it down in front of Robert. It certainly wasn't finished and it was just a couple of ideas but Robert would not play the music I'd put down in front of him. Wouldn't even attempt it. Obviously he didn't think it was good enough and he wasn't going to give it a go and so I fled from those rehearsals in tears."
~ From In the Court of King Crimson by Sid Smith
"It's true: I hoped for writing input from other members. I remember Mel's contribution, and it wasn't Crimson. I'm not suggesting it was 'bad', only that it wasn't Crimson."
~ Robert Fripp
"As Collins fled, [Ian] Wallace and [Boz] Burrell were outraged and at they saw as Fripp's high-handed attitude and accused the guitarist of being hypocritical. A furious Wallace put down his sticks, told Fripp he'd had enough and quit on the spot, followed by Burrell. Fripp packed up his guitar and left without a word."
"It had been quite a day; a new incarnation of King Crimson had come together and folded before even completing its first rehearsal."
~ From In the Court of King Crimson by Sid Smith
