I dont knot what Victor Hugo expected when he wrote Les Miserables
But a bunch of emotional teens writing fanfictions about his work in 2025 was probably not what he expected

My contribution to the Les Mis fandom, part 1 of character lineups!
Designs are a mixture between brick and musical, so not very historically accurate

Been thinking about Fantine and her portrayals. As a character, she has so much depth and emotion. She is an undoubtably good character, but she’s not good in the way Valjean is. Fantine isn’t a reserved saint. She lashes out when she’s been wronged and she does things out of desperation that make people look down on her. But she’s good and the audience wants to see her happy. While Valjean refuses to express the anger he feels towards the society that wronged him, Fantine proves it is possible to express this anger and not lose a bit of audience sympathy. I have yet to find one person who doesn’t cheer her on when she retaliates against Bamatabois. Of course, there are in universe consequences for her anger, however unfair they may be. But my point is that the audience isn’t encouraged to condemn her as well.
On a different note, I also find her placement near the beginning of the story very interesting. In many ways, she is the initial call to action, one that emerges before the barricade but gives it an emotional leg to stand on when it does appear. The resistance coming from Fantine gives only more reason to ensure that it continues.

for @msilverstar, who gave generously to Somos Un Pueblo Unido, and asked for something involving the WAR teachers. So have some headcanons about Ms. Hucheloup (whose classroom Enjolras and co use for the ABC).
-
When Susan Hucheloup finally gets away from grading papers long enough to slip off to the teachers' lounge, Mr. Walker is in the middle of a rant, to Dahlia, who absolutely doesn't care.
"—and I almost had to send Enjolras home yesterday," Walker's saying. "He was wearing a shirt slandering the president—in the middle of the war! It was disgusting, not to mention distracting to students who wanted to learn—"
Susan's ears prick up. "I assume the reason you didn't was Tinker Vs. Des Moines?" she says mildly.
"What?" Walker pivots towards Susan, coffee cup frozen halfway to his mouth, which is bobbing open like a fish.
"The Supreme Court—" Susan starts.
"I know Tinker Vs Des Moines," Walker snaps. "It's my goddamn subject."
"So you obviously know it would violate his first First Amendment rights, to actually—"
Walker cuts her off again. "You know what, Susan? I have had it to here, and I don't need to hear it from you." His eyes narrow. "Any idea of how he heard about it?"
Susan crosses the room, drops a tea bag in a clean mug. "Maybe his last history teacher told him," she says. "Maybe his parents. Maybe he read one of those books that tries to get kids excited about civic participation." She shrugs. "I really couldn't say, it's not my subject."
The bell rings.
Dahlia glances up from her newspaper. "George, don't you have a class this hour?"
At that, Walker hurries out the door, undrunk coffee forgotten on the counter. Good. She hopes it goes cold before he remembers it's there.
"Enjolras and some of his friends asked me if they can use my classroom on Mondays after school," Susan tells Dahlia, filling her mug with hot water. "They want to start a social justice club." "What'd you tell them?" asks Dahlia, standing to dump Walker's coffee in the sink.
"I said, 'Absolutely.' But now I'm thinking, they might want to meet a few times a week. And maybe they'd want some art supplies, to make protest signs and stuff?"
"And what budget does that come out of?" says Dahlia, raising her eyebrows.
Susan smiles. "The sheer fucking spite fund."

Let's hear it for plucky teen girl sidekicks doing their best. Round of applause please. They work so hard supporting the grumpy heroes and always get called annoying. but I love them.

Initial Character Names in Les Mis
I've been having fun poking around in the "Rédaction Initiale" (the earliest version) of Les Mis and want to collect the different initial character names I've run across in one place!
Jean Valjean <- Jean Tréjean
madame Magloire <- madame Marthe
mademoiselle Baptistine <- mademoiselle Sylvanie
Fantine <- Marguerite Louet
Cosette <- Anna Louet*
Marius Pontmercy <- Thomas Pontmercy
Gillenormand <- Charpentier
Gavroche <- Chavroche
Eponine <- Palmyre
Azelma <- Malvina
Grantaire <- Grangé
* This name is the reason Cosette is called Alouette! “La mère s’appelait Marguerite Louet, son enfant s’appelait Anna Louet. D’Anna Louet on avait fait Alouette. C’était le nom qu’on lui donnait dans tout Montfermeil.” Translation: The mother was called Marguerite Louet, her child was called Anna Louet. From Anna Louet they had made Alouette. It was the name she was given in all of Montfermeil.
This isn't an exhaustive list, these are just the ones I've noticed.
