So far we know that:

The kaiju inside Kafka was specifically looking for him. We don't know since when, but given that it found Kafka right after he saved Reno, we can assume it somehow located Kafka after that one incident.

The kaiju inside Kafka was on a mission to kill kaijus, because of the way it reacted to Isao when Kafka lost control. (It clearly says I'll kill monster which means it was a desire of its own, not just a Kafka projection).

Kafka saw a ghost from the past during his visit to the shrine for kaiju slayers.

Which is odd in itself, but later we are told that numbered weapons users can see the ghosts of other users. It's caused because they are using the memory of the identified kaijus as the core of the weapon.

There are living numbered kaiju weapons, like number 10 with Hoshino. Yet, technically, the Kafka situation is a sort of living numbered kaiju weapon too, except we're talking about a deeper symbiosis.

Kafka is slowly turning into a kaiju and he spends too much time on his kaiju form, he risks not being able to turn back to human.

Whatever is no.9, it has hundreds of kaijus on the inside and apparently it has devoured other kaiju slayers along the eras, not only Isao Shinomiya. Which leads off to think 'bout what is going on and how old is that kaiju .

(Obvious) theory time:

If the kaiju within Kafka is acting similarly to the way the cores of dead kaijus turned numbered weapons acted, then Kafka saw the ghost of the shrine through the memory of the kaiju within him. It means that the kaiju is pretty old, having been around for a battle on the Meireki Era.

Whatever No.9 is made of is also old, if not older. It's been fighting kaiju slayers for a while, eating them even.

Unlike other kaijus and excluding no.10 (it'd fight anything that moves), no.8 is fighting against its race on its own accord. It looked for Kafka, not the other way around. When did no.8 evolve to understand humanity? When it decided to turn against kaijus and so it'd help exterminate them?

There's a possibility no.8 had done it before— fight alongside a human to destroy kaijus. There is a possibility Kafka is not the first one, but it was chosen by no.8 because it reminded it of another previous human.

There are many ways it could go, but what we are sure of is that Kafka becoming no.8 user is not a coincidence AND the Defense Corps don't know half the story yet.

( I personally think no.8 is a part of the actual monster within no.9 that escaped and now its trying to kill it, maybe motivated by the memory of the kaiju slayers no.9 real monster has ate )

looking up at katsuki, you noticed the new pair of glasses sitting on top of his nose and if he hadn't stopped paying attention to you, you wouldn't have had to annoy him with useless facts now and then.

"did you know that reindeer like to eat bananas?", a hum to acknowledge the fact.

"did you know that hummingbirds are the only animals that can fly backward? some believe that a bumble bee can as well, but they can't! actually, i don't really know if they can, but they are far too heavy to fly for the little wings they have.", and yet only another hum from the man you like to call your husband.

"did you know that you look great with glasses?"

the only answer you get is an absentminded hum from your husband. not only is he not paying attention to what you said, but he also stopped stroking your hair because he got too invested in the book that YOU forced him to read.

(he didn't want to read it at first because he was convinced that he wouldn't like it)

removing your head from his lap he does eventually tear his gaze away from his (your) book and looks at you with a puzzled expression "what's wrong? why'd you move?"

you pout a bit sitting beside him "you won't listen to me"

he smirks a bit, understanding what the problem is. "oh you want some attention? c'mere", he grabs you by your waist and pulls you to straddle his lap "this better, sweetheart?", he looks into your eyes with such an intense gaze that makes shivers run down your spine

nodding only a little bit you press a quick kiss to his lips, pull away again, and repeat the facts about the animals.

"...and? i think you forgot something", he smirks again and pointedly pushes up his glasses.

"so you WERE listening! why didn't you just say something instead of torturing me with silence?", he chuckles, moving his hands up and down the sides of your body.

"y'know how you told me about chapter 54 of this book? 'm currently on chapter 53.", your eyes widen in shock.

"and you put that book down???", shifting on his lap, grabbing the book, and shoving it into his hands eagerly, you continue: "you NEED to continue reading, i swear i'll be quiet now!"

he chuckles as he hugs you and reads his book at the same time.

BONUS:

"i know right? i LOVED that chapter! and to think that you didn't even want to read the books in the first place", you shake your head disapprovingly "there's only 3 more books for you to read and i SWEAR you'll love them!"

you get up and get the next book for him hearing a quiet chuckle from him "i'm sure i'll love it, sweetheart."

"Brute. I like that. Better than 'buzzard', right?"

"On that lovely parting note, we're going to finish up our dinners. Enjoy your evening, we'll see you on the battlements tomorrow, and please do rot in hell." Then Aelin was turning away, a hand guiding her husband inside. But not before the queen threw a grin over her shoulder to Yrene and Chaol and said, eyes bright—with joy and warmth this time,

"Congratulations."

does anyone know how to visualize Athy’s debutante dress from the novel? i wanted to draw what i think it would look like once i have some free time to do it, but i’m still kinda having a hard time pinpointing how it would look aside from key details (exposed collarbone, slightly ballooned sleeves, garnet bracelet, etc.)

the dresses attached were just an example of what i can visualize so far apart from Athy’s waist bow, and it’s not even including how i think her hair would look too (i would die to see platinum blonde-haired Athy with gorgeous curls). i just think it’d be neat to finally have a proper visual for a novel-accurate dress lol
