That Was the Year That Was – 2006

On 20th January 2006, people in London thought they were hallucinating when they could’ve sworn they’d seen a whale swimming in the River Thames. Their hallucinations were confirmed to be, in fact, reality when TV cameras captured a juvenile female Northern bottlenose whale who was five metres long and weighed about seven tonnes. Her normal habitat would have been near the coasts of the far north of Scotland and Northern Ireland, and in the seas around the Arctic Ocean but she appeared to have lost her way. Rescue teams attempted to get the whale (affectionately named Diana) back into the Atlantic but she later died from convulsions as she was being rescued at around 19:00 GMT on 21 January.

Saddam Hussein, was found guilty of crimes against humanity and sentenced to death by hanging

On 5 November 2006 Iraq’s leader, Saddam Hussein, was found guilty of crimes against humanity and sentenced to death by hanging. On 30 December 2006, the first day of Eid-ul-Adha, Saddam was hanged. Mobile phones captured the execution and the video was leaked to the media and posted on the Internet within hours, becoming the subject controversy across the globe. Prior to his execution he was captured by Americans in 2003 after they invaded Iraq. During this period Saddam was held in a Baghdad detention facility and was interrogated by FBI agent George Piro. In 2004 he was charged with crimes committed against residents of Dujail in 1982, following a failed assassination attempt on his life. This included the murder of 148 people, torture of women and children and the illegal arrest of 399 others. Following the execution, Saddam’s body was buried in his birthplace of Al-Awja in Tikrit, Iraq on 31 December 2006.

While the world’s first partial face transplant on a living human happened on 27 November 2005, the patient, Isabelle Dinoire, appeared in public in early 2006 for a media conference with her new face. She underwent surgery to replace her nose, mouth and chin, which had been mauled by her dog. The operation on Isabelle’s face was carried out by Professor Bernard Devauchelle, assisted by Professor Jean-Michel Dubernard at the Centre hospitalier Universitaire Nord in Amiens, France. The surgery requires the patient to take the drugs for the rest of her life so that her body doesn’t reject her new face. Isabelle later bought another dog to help in her recovery after the surgery.

It was another year of hurt for England (and it still is in 2016) when Italy came, saw and conquered the 2006 FIFA World Cup. England’s shot at the World Cup ended in quarter-finals when they lost on penalties (what a surprise) to Portugal after a goalless match. Italy won the tournament on 9th July 2006 after they defeated France 5–3 in a penalty shootout when extra time had finished in a 1–1 draw. Germany defeated Portugal 3–1 to finish in third place. It was also Italy’s first world title in 24 years, and their fourth world title overall. This made them the second most successful World Cup team ever.

Google, bought video streaming site, YouTube

In October 2006 tech giant, Google, bought video streaming site, YouTube, in 2006 for $1.65 billion. The price tag would’ve seemed massive at the time – especially as YouTube only started up in 2005 but YouTube continued to grow year after year. At that time it was Google’s second largest buy. YouTube now has 1 billion unique users using the service every month. Starting from 2010 Alexa (a commercial web traffic data and analytics service) ranked YouTube as the third most visited website on the Internet after Google and Facebook – this still continues today.

Suffolk Strangler Steve Wright: A real Jekyll and Hyde

Sick Steve Wright carried out the “fastest serial killing spree in British history” when he murdered five prostitutes in just 10 days.

The forklift truck driver strangled his victims before stripping and dumping their bodies in rural spots near Ipswich in 2006.

Wright was jailed for life in 2008 for the murders of Tania Nicol, 19, Gemma Adams, 24, Anneli Alderton, 24, Annette Nicholls, 29 and Paula Clennell, 24.

To his fellow golfers at Seckford golf club near Ipswich, he was “the most boring bloke in the world”, but Steve Wright had for years hidden a secret life of domestic violence, cross-dressing, petty theft, failed suicide bids and an obsession with prostitutes.

He had even tried to strangle an ex-wife on several occasions during a turbulent relationship 20 years before he went on to murder five women in the space of six weeks.

15 January – The BBC announces details of Just the Two of Us, a singing contest following the Strictly Come Dancing format that will air in February and March. Vernon Kay and Tess Daly will present the series which will pair celebrities with professional singers, who will then compete to become series champion.

24 January – Sven-Göran Eriksson announces that he will quit as manager of the England national football team after this summer’s World Cup in Germany. Eriksson, 57, has been in charge of the England team for five years and, as a Swede, is the first non-English manager of the England team.

27 January – Chantelle Houghton, a model from Essex wins the fourth series of Celebrity Big Brother after entering the series as a "fake" celebrity. In order to remain as a contestant she was required to convince the other participants that she was a famous singer.

February

3 February – Islamist demonstration outside Danish Embassy in London in response to the Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons controversy.

8 February – Channel 4 confirms that its pay-per-view movie channel FilmFour will go Free-to-air from July, when it will launch on Freeview.

9 February – Dunfermline and West Fife by-election: Willie Rennie of the Liberal Democrats wins the seat from Labour.

The Government announces that the Child Support Agency is to be abolished.

10–26 February – Great Britain competes at the Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, and wins one silver medal (Shelley Rudman for women’s skeleton).

14 February – Coronation Street bosses defend their decision to film a storyline involving a car breaking down on Saddleworth Moor, scene of the 1960s Moors murders, saying the plot has nothing to do with the events that occurred there.

15 February – BBC One debuts Davina, a chat show presented by Davina McCall. Guests on the first edition include Charlotte Church, Tess Daly and Vernon Kay. The show proves to be a disaster, with The Guardian’s Gareth Maclean noting that McCall "found herself floundering and foundering, struggling through the interviews, and exposing herself in a way from which even the hardiest flasher would recoil", while Jonathan Ross blames a poor guest line up. The 8 March edition gives BBC One its worst ever peak time ratings of 2.75 million. By the time the show ends on 12 April ratings have fallen to below 2.5 million. It is axed shortly afterwards.

22 February – Securitas depot robbery: around £53 million (US$92 million) is stolen from a Securitas depot at Tonbridge, Kent, in the largest cash robbery in British crime history.

The Prince of Wales’s court case continues in the High Court against The Mail on Sunday as he tries to prevent the publication of his journals. Various revelations have been made such as that he considers himself to be a dissident, and his opinion of government officials in People’s Republic of China whom he described as "appalling old waxworks".

23 February – Just the Two of Us debuts on BBC One.

27 February – writers Michael Baigent and Richard Leigh sue Random House in the High Court of Justice claiming that the best selling novel The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown contains ideas stolen from their 1982 book The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail.

28 February – L!VE TV is moved to the adult section of Sky’s EPG, and is rebranded as "Babeworld" two days later. This is because the channel has moved to broadcasting an increasingly adult themed content.

March

1 March – the Senedd, debating chamber of the National Assembly for Wales on Cardiff Bay, designed by Richard Rogers is opened by the Queen.

2 March – Sir Menzies Campbell is elected leader of the Liberal Democrats following an election caused by the resignation of previous leader, Charles Kennedy.

Four people are injured in an explosion in a GlaxoSmithKline factory in Irvine, North Ayrshire.

3 March – Disgraced glam rock singer Gary Glitter is convicted of sexually abusing two young girls at his villa in Vietnam and is sentenced to three years in jail.

4 March – Actress Gaynor Faye and professional skating partner Daniel Whiston win the first series of Dancing on ice.

17 April – Peter Bayless wins the 2006 series of MasterChef Goes Large.

19 April – ITV launch ITV Play, a new 24/7 participation TV channel, on Freeview in the United Kingdom. It will launch on other platforms later in the year.

Denis Norden announces his retirement from his two ongoing ITV shows It’ll Be Alright on the Night and spin-off show Denis Norden’s Laughter File, after 30 years with ITV.

18 July – 180 British citizens evacuated from the Lebanon due to growing crisis between Hizbollah militants and Israel.

20 July – HMS Bulwark prepares to evacuate British nationals from the Lebanon.

21 July – James Dreyfus takes over from Ardal O’Hanlon as George Sunday AKA Thermoman in the sixth and final series of My Hero the series ended in September due to low viewing figures.

6 August – While anchoring from Israel during the Israel-Lebanon war, Sky News presenter Anna Botting famously interviews the British MP, George Galloway about the conflict. During the nine-minute heated discussion Galloway criticises Sky News, News Corporation, and even Botting herself for being biased towards Israel.

10 August – police make many arrests in relation to a transatlantic aircraft plot, and tight security measures are instigated at airports.

14 August – The One Show first broadcasts on BBC One.

18 August – Pete Bennett wins series seven of Big Brother.

23 August – ITV secures a deal to sell its 45% stake in Ireland’s TV3 for £70m.

Central Tonight presenter Joanne Malin apologises after swearing during a live broadcast from Trentham Gardens in Stoke-on-Trent. Central subsequently claims to have received no viewer complaints as a result of her description of the inclement weather, but Trentham says several people contact them offering the presenter their support.

28 August – Bianca Gascoigne and model Calum Best win the second and final series of Love Island.

August – the first modern solely Gaelic-medium school to offer secondary education, Sgoil Ghàidhlig Ghlaschu, is opened at Woodside in Glasgow.

2 September – Royal Air Force Nimrod crash in Afghanistan: fourteen personnel are killed in Britain’s worst single military loss since the Falklands war.

9 September – Helen Mirren awarded best actress at the Venice Film Festival for her role in The Queen, portraying Elizabeth II following the death of Diana, Princess of Wales.

13 September – Ingram Wilcox, a civil servant and quiz show fanatic, has become the fifth person to win the £1 million prize on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, it is reported. The episode showing his win, the first in two and a half years, is aired on 16 September.

16 September – Connie Fisher wins BBC One’s How Do You Solve a Problems Like Maria?. She will make her debut in the role in a revival of The Sound of Music at London’s Palladium Theatre on 14 November.

5 October – Rt. Hon. Elish Angiolini, QC, appointed as Lord Advocate in Scotland. She is the first woman and the first solicitor to be appointed to the post.

5 October – QI publishes its first book: The Book of General Ignorance. The book becomes a No. 1 best-seller for amazon.co.uk.

6 October – The BBC defends presenter Graham Norton after he admits to having taken recreational drugs, including ecstasy in an interview for Marie Claire magazine. Of Norton’s revelation the broadcaster says: "The issues that Graham discusses in this interview are aimed at an adult audience and reflect the frank and open nature of his personality".

7 October – After four and a half years, the BBC ‘Rhythm & Movement’ idents are shown for the final time on BBC One at 1:10 am, as part of a special montage (2:55 am on BBC One Northern Ireland). Their replacements, the ‘Circle’ idents, debut at 10 am.

26 October – Duran Duran lead guitarist Andy Taylor once again leaves the band after a series of disagreements surrounding their latest album, which was still incomplete by the year’s end. Reasons given are his disapproval of the usage of both Timbaland and Justin Timberlake in the creation of the band’s album. The band hires an interim guitarist to supplant Taylor, with no real replacement being announced.

26 October – the Duke of Edinburgh officially opens Arsenal’s new stadium.

26 October – ITV confirms the axing of its prison drama, Bad Girls after eight series.

29 October – After a six-year absence from television, The Royle Family returns for what is billed as its final episode, an hour-long show titled "The Queen of Sheba".

7 November – Dhiren Barot sentenced to life imprisonment for plotting large scale terrorist attacks in Britain and abroad. The Court of Appeal noted that Barot’s "businesslike" plans would have caused carnage on a "colossal and unprecedented scale" if they had been successful.

8 November – three men of Pakistani origin sentenced to life imprisonment for the racist murder of Kriss Donald in Glasgow.

13 November – BBC Parliament broadcasts in full screen format for the first time on the Freeview service, having previously only been available in quarter screen format. The BBC eventually found the bandwidth to make the channel full-screen after receiving "thousands of angry and perplexed e-mails and letters", not to mention questions asked by MPs in the Houses of Parliament itself.

The Ukraine defender, who has played seven times for the champions this season, is facing up to six weeks on the sidelines after having knee surgery.

It is another blow for City, who are already without centre-back Aymeric Laporte with a long-term injury.

It’s fair to say it is extremely wet at the Etihad, where I think everyone is in for a very soggy afternoon.

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith and Jack Grealish (with his hood up to protect those trademark locks) have just been out to inspect the pitch which, like the rest of Manchester, has certainly seen enough water in the past 24 hours.

It could be raining goals later too – even after Leicester’s record-equalling haul last night, City are still the highest scorers in the Premier League in 2019-20 with 29, while there have been an average of more than three goals (at either end) in every Villa game this season.

Deliveroo claims rapid expansion will create 70,000 restaurant jobs for struggling sector Deliveroo claims it will create 70,000 jobs in the UK restaurant sector by next year, as it pushes ahead with its plans for rapid expansion. If successful, the move will create some relief for the sector which has seen a number of well-known chains collapse in recent months, most recently Jamie Oliver’s restaurant empire which fell into administration resulting in the loss of 1,000 jobs. Deliveroo boss Will Shu agrees it has been “a challenging time for the high street”, but that Deliveroo’s expansion “will create more jobs on Britain’s high streets, bring more revenue to restaurants, create work for more riders and, of course, bring exciting foods to offices and homes across the UK”, the Telegraph reports. Deliveroo has created 25,000 roles in the UK restaurant industry since it was founded in 2013, according to research commissioned by Deliveroo and carried out by Capital Economic. This is in addition to the 25,000 delivery drivers which are classed as self-employed. READ MORE: Deliveroo claims it will ‘help create 70,000 restaurant jobs’ with expansion plans Facebook removes 3 billion fake profiles in six months Facebook removed more than 3 billion fake accounts during Q4 of 2018 and Q1 of 2019, according to its latest ‘enforcement report’. This is more than it has ever removed before, thanks to a rise in automated attacks by bad actors which attempt to create large volumes of accounts at one time. Overall it estimates 5% of monthly active accounts are fake. Facebook has also measured how often content that violates it community standards has been viewed. It estimates that for every 10,000 times people view content on Facebook 11 to 14 view content relating to adult nudity of sexual activity. This number rises to 25 views for violent and graphic content. Facebook says it proactively detected more than 95% of the content it took action on before someone needed to report it. On hate speech, for example, the platform says it detected 65% of the content it removes, up from 24% just over a year ago. In the first quarter of 2019 it took down 4 million hate speech posts. Uber launches electric bike-hiring in London Uber is launching its electric bike-hiring service Jump in London, as it scopes out the possibility of a bicycle and scooter sharing app in the UK. Jump bikes can be found on the Uber app and will allow users to unlock one of the 350 bikes currently being trialled in Islington. The bikes cost £1 to unlock and 12p per minute to ride, with the first five minutes free. Bikes must be collected and returned to dedicated service areas, and must not be left in no parking zones such as near hospitals, stadiums or canals. If bikes are left in any of these excluded areas or are dumped users will be fined £25. Uber has already launched the Jump brand in he US, Canada, Berin, Brussels, Lisbon and Paris. The gadget, which is worn on the wrist, is described as a health and wellness product, according to Bloomberg, which saw internal documents relating to its development. The device connects to a smartphone app and measures the wearer’s emotions via microphones that takes voice readings, which are then paired with software. The documents suggest the technology will eventually be able to advise the wearer on how to interact more effectively with others. It is being developed in collaboration with Lab126, the company behind Amazon’s Fire phone and Echo smart speaker and Alexa software. READ MORE:Amazon Is Working on a Device That Can Read Human Emotions The Times uses AI to boost reader engagement The Times and The Sunday Times have been using artificial intelligence and machine learning to understand the habits, interests and preferences of readers to enhance engagement. Owner News UK has been using JAMES, or journey automated messaging for higher engagement through self-learning, to learn the preferences of 300,000 readers, including 117,000 subscribers, and deliver tailored content and offers. Newsletters, for example, are compiled using content JAMES believes readers will be interested in, using their preferred format, time and frequency. There are five recommendation models for timing, seven for content, 15 for format and nine for frequency, which together can create trillions of permutations to personalise content. This has lead to, among other things, a 49% reduction in subscription cancellations among subscribers when they interacted with JAMES. Overall 70% of subscribers in the trial interacted with the AI tool. Peter Evia-Rhodes, director of customer value at The Times and The Sunday Times says: “JAMES has allowed us to anticipate customers’ needs and wants, which has helped to create stronger relationships and drive engagement with The Times at cost and at scale. “In the future JAMES will expand to more channels like SMS, push notifications, and we are exploring the possibility of how it might power other personalisation, as well as advertising, offering our commercial partners more value through enriched data profiles and targeting.” Thursday, 23 May Avon to be bought by Natura in £1.6bn deal Cosmetics giant Natura is buying struggling direct-to-consumer brand Avon in a £1.6bn deal that will create the world’s fourth largest cosmetics company. The Brazilian company already owns The Body Shop and Aesop and is the South American nation’s top business in cosmetics, perfumes and toiletries. The deal means Natura shareholders will hold 76% of the combined company, which is predicted to have an annual revenue of more than £7.9bn, as well as 3,200 stores globally across 100 countries. According to analysts at Brasil Plural, Natura is “pursuing the goal of becoming a global brand” but the company will need to significantly invest in Avon’s operations in Brazil where it already has 2.2 million direct marketing consultants. Avon has been struggling in recent years as the impact of door-to-door sales dwindles in the digital age. READ MORE: Avon to be acquired by Brazil’s Natura for £1.6bn Arcadia boss Sir Philip Green to close 23 stores in rescue plan Sir Philip Green plans to close 23 stores across his Arcadia empire, putting more than 500 jobs at risk as part of rescue plans. The proposal will see a number of Topshop, Dorothy Perkins, Miss Selfridge and Burton stores close and will call for rents to be cut across another 194 stores at the Arcadia group. Arcadia will need the regulator’s support for a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) to be approved otherwise the business could face administration. Additionally, as part of the proposal, Arcadia Group says it is willing to inject a further £100m into the scheme over a number of years to bridge a shortfall in pension contributions. However, the pensions regulator is sceptical the deal will “adequately protect” the pensions of employees. Ian Grabiner, the Arcadia chief executive, says plans are a “tough but necessary decision for the business”. “We have in place a well-developed turnaround plan for the group, which includes driving cost efficiencies and managing the refreshed retail store estate and investing in the continued development of our multi-channel proposition and logistics,” he adds. Arcadia has more than 566 locations in the UK and Ireland, employing 18,000 people. Customers in London, Birmingham, Cardiff, Manchester, Edinburgh and Belfast can now pre-order a range of six new 5G smartphones, which will not include Huawei. The company says the new 5G Smart plans will give consumers access to the UK’s first 5G network and BT Sport HD HDR, as well as an exclusive Gamer’s Data Pass with zero-rated data. Marc Allera, CEO of BT’s consumer division, says this is just the start of the UK’s 5G journey. “We’re adding 5G to the UK’s number one 4G network to increase reliability, increase speeds, and keep our customers connected where they need it most,” he says. EE is also introducing 5GEE WiFi and 5GEE home broadband. The new network will be switched on from 30 May with plans to expand the roll-out to another 10 cities by the end of the year. The Sun’s loyalty scheme hits one million members One million people have signed up to The Sun’s loyalty scheme, Sun Savers, which is designed to be a money-saving scheme. Membership has grown by 43% in the last year, following the launch of The Sun Raffle and accompanying TV campaign, under a new Sun Savers editor Giselle Wainwright, who joined in October last year. Wednesday, 22 May Urban Outfitters to let people borrow clothes Urban Outfitters is entering the sharing economy with an online subscription service that will allow people to borrow six items to wear for a month before swapping them. Aimed at millennials who are increasingly looking for more sustainable options, ‘Nuuly’ will launch in the US in the summer, with plans for a wider roll-out in the pipeline. “Interest in sharing-economy platforms and recurring subscription relationships has grown across industries,” the company says. “In apparel, the millennial consumer, in particular, is seeking out platforms that provide novelty, variety and breadth, while also supporting sustainability.” Urban Outfitters expects Nuuly to have 50,000 subscribers and generate $50m in sales within the first 12 months. Other labels including Levi’s, Gal Meets Glam, Anna Sui and Fila will also be available to rent for a monthly fee. READ MORE: Urban Outfitters to rent out clothing M&S profit down 10% as it speeds up store closure programme Marks & Spencer has posted a 9.9% drop in profit for the full year ending 30 March 2019, however the retailer maintains it has made “good progress restoring the basics” and fixing a number of its legacy issues. On a like-for-like basis, food revenue was down 2.3% and clothing and home revenue down 1.6%. Clothing and home grew 9.8% online, which helped to increase M&S’s online clothing market share by 0.3 percentage points. However, M&S is speeding up its store closure programme with plans to shut a further 20 of its full-line stores, to a total of 85. It has already shut 35 and has warned this number will likely reach 100. It will also close 25 of its Simply Food convenience stores. Profit before tax and adjusting items fell 9.9% to £523.2m. Pre-tax profits were only £84.6m in the year, in part due to a £440m hit from its store closure programme. “As I have said, at this stage we are judging ourselves as much by the pace of change as by the trading outcomes and change will accelerate in the year ahead,” boss Steve Rowe says. “While there are green shoots, we have not been consistent in our delivery in a number of areas of the business. M&S is changing faster than at any time in my career – substantial changes across the business to our processes, ranges and operations and this has constrained this year’s performance, particularly in clothing and home. However, we remain on track with our transformation and are now well on the road to making M&S special again.” Evian launches global recycling initiative Evian has launched a global initiative called ‘Flip It For Good’ which aims to engage consumers around recycling. In partnership with National Geographic, the natural mineral water brand is asking consumers to post a video of themselves on social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) ‘flipping’ any empty plastic bottle into the recycling bin. For every video posted alongside the hashtag Evian will reclaim a bottle from nature, in partnership with the social business Plastic Bank. The initiative is backed by National Geographic explorer Cory Richards, creative entrepreneur Luka Sabbat and tennis champion Stan Wawrinka, who have all posted videos of themselves ‘flipping’ bottles. “By 2050 it is estimated there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean,” Luke says. “However, small actions really can have an impact which is why this is such a great initiative from evian encouraging people to do their part and recycle more.” The ‘Flip It For Good’ initiative is part of a broader strategy by Evian to achieve its commitment to becoming a circular brand by 2025. H&M celebrates equality with new collection H&M is celebrating LGBTQI equality with the launch of a new capsule collection for women, men and non-binary individuals. Featuring a range of slogan t-shirts, sportswear-inspired garments and accessories, 10% of the sales price will be donated to the UN Free & Equal campaign, which is the United Nations’ campaign for equal rights and fair treatment for lesbian, gay, bi, trans and intersex people around the world. “H&M strives to be a mirror of global society, one that fully embraces a central message of ‘Love for All’, standing up for people’s right to love whoever they want, wherever they are,” says Sara Spännar, global marketing and communications director at H&M. “We are proud to continue our support for LGBTQI equality by celebrating love and raising awareness about the fight for equal rights, diversity and inclusivity.” H&M’s capsule collection will be sold in stores and online worldwide and accompanied by a global media campaign. Jamie Oliver restaurant empire goes into administration Jamie Oliver’s restaurant group has gone into administration, resulting in the loss of 1,000 jobs. All but three of the chef’s 25 UK restaurants, which includes his Jamie’s Italian chain plus Fifteen and Barbecoa, have closed after the group called in administrators from KPMG. Only two Jamie’s Italian branches and a Jamie’s Oliver Diner, all at Gatwick airport, remain. Oliver, who injected £4m into the business this year, says he is “devastated” and “deeply saddened” by the outcome. “I appreciate how difficult this is for everyone affected,” Oliver says. “We launched Jamie’s Italian in 2008 with the intention of positively disrupting mid-market dining in the UK high street, with great value and much higher quality ingredients, best-in-class animal welfare standards and an amazing team who shared my passion for great food and service. And we did exactly that.” Will Wright, a partner at KPMG and the joint administrator, adds: “The current trading environment for companies across the casual dining sector is as tough as I’ve ever seen. According to the FCA, scammers often used social media to promote their “get rich quick” online trading platforms. Celebrity endorsements and images of luxury items such as expensive watches and cars on social media posts were often used to promote schemes. The watchdog plans to run a campaign to raise awareness of online trading scams. “We’re warning the public to be suspicious of adverts which promise high returns from online trading platforms,” says Mark Steward, FCA’s executive director of enforcement and market oversight. Due to the lack of regulation around online-only currencies, there is no compensation or protection for investors if things go wrong. READ MORE: Millions lost in ‘celebrity-backed scams’ Ford cuts 7,000 jobs across departments including marketing Ford is cutting 7,000 jobs worldwide, with up to 550 in the UK including a number of marketing and communications jobs. The US manufacturer says the cuts represent 10% of its global salaried workforce and 20% of its management positions, including marketing and communications. It has not disclosed which departments would be the worst affected. The cuts are expected to save Ford £471m a year, helping it navigate declining demand and a shift to electric vehicles. In a memo to staff on Monday, chief executive, Jim Hackett says the restructuring plan will start on Tuesday, with the majority of cuts finished by 24 May. He writes: “To succeed in our competitive industry, and position Ford to win in a fast-changing future, we must reduce bureaucracy, empower managers, speed decision-making and focus on the most valuable work, and cost cuts.” Other cost-saving initiatives include moving out of the multivan market and combining the headquarters of Ford UK and Ford Credit. Ford first revealed plans for job cuts across its European operations in January but did not give further details. READ MORE: Ford to cut 7,000 jobs including more than 500 in UK Thomas Cook reassures customers amid fears of future Thomas Cook is seeking to reassure holidaymakers that fears over its financial woes have been overblown and holidays are protected. Its shares fell by a further 14% yesterday (20 August) to 10p, meaning the company’s market value has fallen 92% to £159m over the past 12 months. Despite this fall, the holidaymaker is reassuring people on social media and in a statement that it is “business as usual”. Last week, Thomas Cook issued a fresh profit warning and reported a half-year loss of almost £1.5bn after a goodwill write-off of £1.1bn. Thomas Cook said in a statement at the weekend: “We have ample resources to operate our business and at the same time, as usual, our liquidity position continues to strengthen into the summer period.” It added: “We’re responsible for taking over 20 million people abroad on holiday every year and we take that responsibility very seriously. As an ATOL-protected business, our customers can have complete confidence in booking their holiday with us.” The company is seeking to cut costs closing 21 of its high street stores and putting its currency arm Thomas Cook Money under review. It has blamed a series of problems for its profit warnings, including political unrest in holiday destinations, last summer’s heatwave and customers delaying booking holidays due to Brexit. But this is only part of the picture, the holidaymaker has also failed to keep up in the wake of increasing competition from online travel agents and low-cost airlines. Currently, automatic sorting machines used in waste facilities in the UK use near infra-red light that cannot detect carbon black pigment found in ‘standard’ black plastic – making it impossible to recycle. However, the FMCG giant has developed a lower carbon black plastic for its TRESemmé and Lynx products allowing them to be successfully recycled. Sebastian Munden, general manager of Unilever UK and Ireland, says: “We’ve been working on a solution for black plastic for some time, and this move to using detectable black plastic in our TRESemmé and Lynx bottles means we will potentially be removing around 2,500 tonnes of plastic from the waste stream.” Unilever’s innovation was made in collaboration with RECOUP, WRAP and waste management giants Veolia, SUEZ, Viridor and TOMRA and the FMCG giant has pledged to make the technology accessible to other companies. WHSmith boss to step down WHSmith group chief executive Stephen Clarke is to step down in October, after 15 years with the firm, six of those in the top job. He will be replaced by Carl Cowling, currently managing director of the WHSmith high street business. The announcement comes as the firm’s results showed like-for-like sales climbed 1% in the 11 weeks to 18 May. Sales fell 1% in the high street stores but were up 1% in its travel business, where it plans to open around 20 new units in the UK, including 10 hospital stores. Clarke says: “We remain confident in the outcome for the full year.” He adds he has no immediate plans after leaving the retailer other than to “take a break”. Clarke is credited with turning around the stationers fortunes after it struggled with competition from supermarkets and websites such as Amazon. Under Clarke, the company refocused attention on higher margin travel stores in airports and railway stations. £ READ MORE: Stephen Clarke to step down as WHSmith chief Monday, 20 April Ryanair profits plunge 29% Profits at Ryanair have fallen by 29% to €1.02bn (£894m) for the full year to 31 March despite the airline growing its customer base by 7% to 139 million people. The rising number of passengers was offset by a 6% decline in fares to an average of €37 (£32) as a result of “short-haul capacity growth” and the absence of Easter in the fourth quarter. Ryanair did, however, grow its revenue by 6% to €7.56bn (£6.62bn) and added 406 new routes. The company describes its full year 2019 results as “a year of investment” in its people, support systems and wider business in a bid to grow to 200 million passengers by 2024. The airline’s costs, excluding fuel, rose by 5% following a €200m (£175m) increase in staff costs, which included a 20% hike in pilot pay. Following safety fears, Ryanair has delayed the introduction of its first five B737-MAX aircraft until winter this year. However, the airline states it has the “utmost confidence” in these aircraft, which it claims boast 4% more seats, are 16% more fuel efficient and generate 40% lower noise emissions. Looking at the full year 2020, Ryanair remains “cautious on pricing”, although it expects traffic will grow by 8% to 153 million passengers. The company adds that its performance for the coming year will be heavily dependent on peak summer fares, pricing during the second half of the year, the absence of “security events” and no negative Brexit developments. Co-op rolls out £10m campaign uniting food, insurance and funeral care The Co-op is uniting its food, insurance and funeral care marketing for the first time with a £10m advertising campaign that champions bringing investment back into communities. The campaign, created by Lucky Generals, weaves the Co-op’s commercial and community messaging into one overarching marketing strategy featuring a new strapline: “It’s what we do.” The campaign message is focused on how the supermarket creates “products of differentiation”, from its 100% British meat commitment to reinvesting millions of pounds back into community initiatives through its membership scheme. The first TV ad appeared on Saturday night (18 May) during ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent, with three ads appearing in one ad break. This is being supported by hyper-local targeting, driving personal relevance and linking to local causes the Co-op supports. The campaign will include 120 out-of-home executions with a message tailored to each area, while 222 local cinemas will serve ads with dynamic end-frames, again showing specific causes in that area. “Building stronger communities by being a stronger Co-op is what we do. We already run our businesses differently to most and this means we can do things that benefit our members and their communities and not just a small group of institutional investors in the City of London,” says chief membership officer Matt Atkinson. “The success of our ethical-led business means we can re-invest our profits and our plan is to use our profits to rally people to come together to care for their local community. This is about the power of co-operation and it’s what we’ve been doing for 175 years.” Customer director, Ali Jones, believes the Co-op needs to decisively seize the opportunity to show leadership in an era where consumers are increasingly demanding that businesses take action to improve their communities. Online ads complained about three times as much as TV Online adverts made up 90% of the campaigns amended or withdrawn by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) in 2018, with online ads also outnumbering TV cases by 3:1. This figure includes paid ads online and companies’ ad claims on their own websites, social media spaces, apps, advergames, as well as video-on-demand and mobile. The ASA amended or withdrew a record number of ads in 2018, resolving 33,727 complaints about 25,259 ads. Of this number 16,059 complaints, up 41% on 2017, were about 14,257 online ads, an increase of 38%. Some 10,773 complaints, up 14% on the previous year, were about 5,748 TV ads, an increase of 23%. Overall, the ASA secured the amendment or withdrawal of 10,850 ads, which is up 53% on 2017. Given the rising number of complaints coming from online, ASA chief executive Guy Parker explains that the ASA’s new five-year strategy – More Impact Online – will focus on strengthening the regulation of online advertising and using new tech to protect the public. An example would be the recent roll out of new child avatar technology, which simulates children’s browsing activity to identify ads being served to kids online, resulting in action against five gambling operators. “Our recent use of new avatar technology is a taste of what’s to come under the new strategy and we look forward to working with our partners to increase further the impact we’re having online,” Parker adds. Government to champion UK advertising at Cannes The UK Government’s Department for International Trade (DIT) is teaming up with industry leaders to showcase the best of UK advertising at the Cannes Lions festival of creativity (17-21 June). The Creativity Is GREAT campaign, supported by the likes of the Advertising Association, Clear Channel UK, Channel 4, Framestore, London & Partners, M&C Saatchi and Newsworks, is designed to support the growth of UK exports of advertising services. The campaign activity will include two trade missions, the first run by London & Partners supporting 20 high growth London-based adtech and martech businesses, and the second coordinated by the IPA, which will bring a further 20 advertising agency SMEs. For the first time, UK advertising will host an activation space in the Palais Piazza developed by M&C Saatchi and Framestore. The Creativity Is GREAT activity will also span networking spaces for UK advertising companies in Le Jardin de Clear Channel and the Little Black Book beach, as well as further pop-up activities at venues including the Channel 4 Villa. Ms Banks’ re-working of early 2000s track ‘Remember The Name’ was developed, created and produced by women and with women at the forefront. The idea behind the film is that long after the tournament in France comes to a close, the nation will ‘Remember The Name’ of each of the athletes. Devised by in-house creative team, BBC Creative, the trailer debuted during Saturday’s (18 May) episode of Football Focus, which was broadcast live from Wembley ahead of the Men’s FA Cup final. The creative is part of the BBC’s Change the Game campaign, which aims to shine a spotlight on women’s sport across the summer. Doctor Who in Germany - A Timeline

Latest from the news site: Last weekend over 50,000 people attended the Comic Con Germany in Stuttgart. One of the stars invited was Torchwood’s John Barrowman, so a surprising number of attendees cosplayed characters from Doctor Who or Torchwood. But Germany’s obsession with the Doctor is fairly new and for a long time the show has been struggling to get any recognition even among Science Fiction fans. Here is a timeline of Doctor Who in Germany: The 60’s – Missed opportunities It was in 1965 that the BBC offered a German channel a selection of William Hartnell stories. An offer which was never taken up. In 1968 the German public channel ZDF received an audition print of The Ice Warriors. A jury should decide if the serial was worth airing on German television. The protocol reads (translated to English): Dr. Who and the Ice Warriors, Utopian series Result: rejected.A new ice age has gripped Earth. A motley crew of scientists fights a losing battle to overcome the problems. The now moving glaciers release beings from other planets stranded with their spaceship on Earth hundreds of thousands of years ago.Scenery and costumes of the films are as naive as the scripts are obscure. The rejection was unanimous. If ZDF had picked up this serial and even more stories from the 60’s, many lost episodes would likely still exist, since German TV back then was already archiving most of their shows for repeat purposes. The 70’s – Doctor Who wasteland During the 70’s Doctor Who was nowhere to be seen on German television. Although there was one curious sidestep in print. The German erotic magazine Plaisir published the famous “nude Katy Manning and the Dalek” photo on its cover, with a feature inside. This magazine is a rarity now and it is not known if the TV show was explained to the readers of the magazine, who most likely will never have heard of Doctor Who. The 80’s – Doctor Who makes its debut in print and on German TV In 1980 the German young adult books publisher Schneider released two Target novelisations, “Der Planet der Daleks” (Planet of the Daleks) and “Kampf um die Erde” (translates to “Fight for Earth”, better known as The Dalek Invasion of Earth). Both novels were heavily edited. It was not a German TV channel that debuted Doctor Who in (West-)Germany. Instead the English language European Super Channel showed a few Tom Baker stories in the mid-80’s. Not many Germans would have watched them, though. Finally in 1989 the commercial TV channel RTL Plus made a deal with BBC Enterprises to broadcast the Sylvester McCoy episodes of Doctor Who. The show was dubbed into German, with the actor Michael Schwarzmaier providing the voice for the Doctor and Carin Tietze the voice for Ace. The series started on Wednesday, 22nd November 1989 at 1.05pm with the first episode of “Terror auf Lakertia” (Time and the Rani). Before that there was a short introduction to the program with producer John Nathan-Turner and Sylvester McCoy summarising the history of the show for German audiences. Episode 2 aired on Sunday afternoon, with each subsequent episode airing on the same day. Interestingly RTL Plus broadcasted the serials in production order, not in the same order as it had been transmitted in the UK. The last serial therefore was “Das Hause der Tausend Schrecken” (translates to “The house of a thousand horrors”, better known as Ghost Light), instead of “Der Tod auf leisen Sohlen” (“Death on silent feet” or Survival). Doctor Who Magazine reported in September 1990 that the Sylvester McCoy run attracted around 2 million viewers and that RTL Plus was looking into buying Jon Pertwee serials in colour, although this never seemed to have gone any further than negotiations. With no new episodes after Series 26 it appeared Doctor Who’s broadcast in Germany ended just a little while after it began. The 90’s – Certainly no years of wilderness in Germany Shortly after the RTL Plus broadcast, German books publisher Goldmann released six Target novels translated to German. 1 Die Invasion the Daleks (Doctor Who and the Daleks) 2 Das Komplott der Daleks (The Dalek Invasion of Earth) 3 Der Planet der Daleks (Planet of the Daleks) 4 Tod den Daleks (Death to the Daleks) 5 Der Schöpfer der Daleks (Destiny of the Daleks) 6 Das Kind von den Sternen (An Unearthly Child) The first book included a chapter on the history of Doctor Who on TV and print. Bizarrely the book cover of The Daleks featured Tom Baker and the cover of Destiny of the Daleks featured William Hartnell. The novelizations of Daleks Invasion of Earth and Planet of the Daleks featured a different translation than the one in the Schneider books from the 80’s and were also unedited this time. In 1991 comics publisher Condor released the popular DWM comic strips featuring the sixth Doctor and Frobisher in three parts. RTL Plus repeated Seasons 24 to 26 in 1993, on Fridays and Saturdays shortly after midnight. This time the serials were edited together as long omnibus editions. Viewers then had to wait until 1995 for new material. Commercial TV channel VOX bought all Colin Baker stories and dubbed them into German. The Doctor was again voiced by Michael Schwarzmaier. VOX also bought the anniversary special “Die Fünf Doktoren” (The Five Doctors) which was the first story to be transmitted. The 90 minute feature was edited into a three-parter with many scenes missing. Again Michael Schwarzmaier dubbed every incarnation of the Doctor, giving each one a unique voice. After “Die Fünf Doktoren” aired, VOX transmitted every available Colin Baker episode Monday to Friday in the early morning. Strangely, they started with the last serial “Das Urteil” (Trial of a Time Lord) and worked their way backwards until “Zweimal Einstein” (The Twin Dilemma). VOX repeated the run immediately after (again backwards), but after that it would take more than a decade until Doctor Who returned to TV screens in Germany. More and more genre magazines started to appear in the mid 90’s, so it was only a matter of time until they would run articles on that “curious british cult TV show”. Space View, a magazine comparable to the UK's SFX, ran a two part article about Doctor Who. Other magazines started to feature more and more news on the show, especially in the wake of the new TV movie featuring Paul McGann. The TV Movie arrived in Germany in 1997 as a VHS, at first to rent, later on the shelves to buy. It was dubbed to German but hasn’t been transmitted on TV to this day. The 90’s also saw the first kind of “fandom” appear in Germany. In 1995 the fan club Worshippers of Xoanon was formed which later published a quarterly fanzine called Time Scoop. The club started out with only a handful of people, meeting up regularly to watch the latest imported VHS or sharing their New Adventures novels collection and talking about convention appearances in the UK they were lucky to attend. For the first few years the club had around 10 to 20 members, but since then grew immensely. 2000 – today: Doctor Who takes a while but finally arrives Some members of the fan club started the first podcast called Whocast in 2006, discussing Big Finish releases, reviewing stories and bringing news about the new TV show. The Whocast became pretty popular after a while and still runs to this day. It was the second podcast about Doctor Who worldwide. When Doctor Who returned to British TV screens in 2005 the few German fans existing had to wait a while longer for its return. Commercial channel Pro7 finally bought Series 1 and 2 in 2008, dubbed them and aired the episodes every Saturday afternoon. The ratings were disappointing though, so they cancelled the show after the transmission of “Der Dritte Weltkrieg” (World War Three), only to continue with Dalek a few weeks later at a different timeslot. After the Series 2 finale, Pro7 announced they were not interested in purchasing further episodes of Doctor Who. Would German viewers now never get to know who the mysterious bride in the TARDIS would be? One year later, in 2009, another channel picked up a show belonging to the Doctor Who universe. RTL 2 aired the first episode of Torchwood on 11th March 2009. Although most viewers will have never heard of Doctor Who, its spin-off quickly developed into a success for the channel, leading them later into buying Series 3 and 4. Doctor Who fans were hopeful that RTL 2 might give Doctor Who another chance but that scenario never happened. Fans still had to wait until 2012 to see new episodes of Doctor Who. FOX Germany, a subscription channel, bought the license for Doctor Who and started to broadcast from Series 5 onwards. Although fans were a bit disappointed Series 3 and 4, as well as the Specials, were never shown, the Series 5 broadcast was a huge success for FOX. Quickly they started to transmit Series 6 and after that dubbed the “missing stories” of the David Tennant era. Fans finally got to know about the mysterious bride. In 2013, around the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, the show seemed to be everywhere in the media. The German press didn’t ignore it anymore, the cinema showings of the anniversary special sold out in many cities and the internet, facebook, tumblR and co helped to build the fandom. Around 2013 Panini Comics started to release the Titan comic books in Germany and books publisher Cross Cult began releasing Doctor Who novels. The relatively young DVD production company Pandastorm Pictures released boxed sets with Classic Who stories that were already dubbed to German. To this day they released all Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy stories, The Five Doctors and the TV Movie. As these DVD’s sold extremely well, they are now starting to dub stories that were never seen before on German television. The first release will be “Die Höhlen von Androzani” (The Caves of Androzani) and they just announced a second release, “Die Auferstehung der Daleks” (Resurrection of the Daleks). The fifth Doctor played by Peter Davison will once again be voiced by Michael Schwarmaier. In 2015 three fans founded the company TimeLash Event. They started a crowdfunding that ultimately made nearly twice as much money as they needed in order to do a Doctor Who convention, the first one ever in Germany. The con was held in October 2015 in Kassel and featured guests such as Paul McGann, Nicola Bryant, Nicholas Briggs, Terry Molloy, Terrance Dicks, Catrin Stewart, Andrew Cartmel and many more. Since then TimeLash has become a well-established annual Doctor Who convention, which usually sells out months before the date. Not long after TimeLash the BBC sent Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman for a visit to Berlin, finally acknowledging the fandom in Germany. Now After the success on the subscription-only channel FOX, Doctor Who could also be streamed at iTunes, Netflix, Amazon Prime, among others. Recently the public channel ONE, belonging to the ARD-group, picked up the show and repeated all available episodes, most of them for the first time ever on a free-to-air channel. Reports recently came in that the viewing figures for the target audiences are better than anything else that channels broadcasts. German fans still don’t know yet when they are going to see last year’s Christmas special and Series 10. It seems like both FOX and ONE fight to get the license for airing the episodes first and these negotiations are still ongoing. Nevertheless, Doctor Who has truly arrived in Germany and made its impression. German pop culture is filled with references to the show and more and more actors appear on German conventions. West Week Ever: Pop Culture In Review - 1/13/17

In movie news, we got a trailer for CHiPs, starring Dax Shepard and Michael Peña. That’s right, the California Highway Patrol are gonna get their own film. And I couldn’t give two shits. I’ve probably seen 3 episodes of that show in my lifetime, so there’s no nostalgia factor for me there. I’m going into this the same way I went into Starsky & Hutch – another show I’ve never seen. I thought the trailer, however, was kinda funny. I’ve heard a lot of folks ragging on it, as they see it as the “21 Jump Street Model” being applied to the CHiPs franchise. I feel like, without it being a comedy, there’s not really much you can do with that concept. It’s cops on motorcycles. How do you add drama to that? One of them gets a flat tire? I like the fact that it’s a comedy, though the trailer is far from the funniest thing I’ve seen. There’s no way I’m setting foot in a theater to see it, but I’m totally gonna watch it, either via Redbox or “Other”. I mean, Peña is a national treasure. He’s great in everything he does, and I feel like the only reason he doesn’t get more accolades is due to his alleged ties to Scientology. Anyway, a CHiPs movie is coming. Tell your grandpa!

During the Television Critics Association winter press tour, The CW surprised everyone by announcing the early renewal of 7 shows, including Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, The Flash, Supernatural, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and Jane the Virgin. This is a major win for Ex-Girlfriend, seeing as how it’s the lowest rated show on broadcast television. This will also be whopping season 13 for Supernatural, which I can’t even believe. I joked on Twitter that star Jensen Ackles must’ve made some kind of Faustian deal around season 5 that he can’t figure out how to get out of. Like, those dudes are completely typecast at this point, where they have nothing to look forward to other than a life on the convention circuit. But it’s good work if you can get it!

Anyway, the most surprising news was that The CW was resurrecting Constantine, starring Matt Ryan…as an animated series. Yes, Constantine will join Vixen as a CW Seed original webseries. Ugh. I’ve expressed my disdain for webseries in the past, but it’s not like I was gonna watch it anyway. I only liked Constantine in his cameo on Arrow, but never watched his series. And the Vixen CW Seed show was so forgettable that I can’t even remember if I finished both seasons. But who knows? Maybe this will be good? I’ll wait til someone I trust recommends it.

Surprising no one, it’s being reported that Girl Meets World is being shopped around to other platforms. In recent interviews, it was revealed that Disney Channel wouldn’t let the show explore some themes that the writers wanted, but I still think it got pretty heavy for Disney fare. Anyway, I wouldn’t be surprised if it ended up at Freeform or Netflix. It seems like everyone would be on board, and maybe it could last as long as its predecessor.

In the world of comics, it was announced that Brian Michael Bendis would be writing a Defenders comic, to be released around the time of the Netflix series of the same name. The series will feature Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. I feel this is bad news for writer David Walker, however, who happens to be writing the current Power Man and Iron Fist comic. Sure, there are multiple Spider books and multiple Iron Man books, but I just don’t see those guys carrying multiple books, especially considering the low sales on PM & IF. I don’t know if I’m looking forward to this or not. On the one hand, I love Jessica Jones and, besides Miles Morales, think she’s the greatest Bendis contribution to comics. I also love how he writes Luke Cage. He got his chops writing Daredevil, so he should be good there, too. At the same time, he’s not the writer he used to be, so I’m not sure if he’s got “It” right now. Still, I’m a dumb fanboy, so I’ll be checking it out when it hits stands.

Things You Might Have Missed This Week

The cast of Downton Abbey has been told to clear their schedules for a possible film. I still need to get past season 4, so I don’t even know what a movie would be about at this point.

Love Connection is returning to the airwaves, courtesy of Fox. Chuck Woolery, however, will be replaced by Bravo’s Andy Cohen.

Speaking of Fox, primetime soap Empire was renewed for season 4. I finally gave up on it this year, so good luck with that!

Breaking Baddie Gus Fring is rumored to be showing up on Better Call Saul next season.

American Horror Story has been renewed by FX for seasons 8 and 9. I’ve never seen any of them, but I know some of y’all liked the early seasons at least.

David Goyer and Justin Rhodes have been hired to write a Green Lantern Corps film, which will star Hal Jordan and John Stewart

The 74th Annual Golden Globe Awards were held last Sunday, celebrating the best in television and film. Surprising everyone, freshman show (and former West Week Ever recipient) Atlanta won the Golden Globe for Best Musical or Comedy in Television. To top things off, though, its creator and star, Donald Glover, won Best Actor in a Comedy. It was well deserved, as the show was nearly perfect, and Glover was behind all of it. Well, Glover’s week got even better a few days later, as he inked an exclusive development deal with FX Productions. The only bad news was that FX announced season 2 of Atlanta will be delayed until 2018 because Glover’s so damn busy. After all, he’s got to film his Lando Calrissian scenes for the upcoming Han Solo film. So, I think it’s safe to say this was Donald Glover’s week, which is why he had the West Week Ever.
