German Chancellor Scholz loses vote of confidence
A majority of Bundestag (German parliament) lawmakers voted against Chancellor Olaf Scholz in a planned confidence vote, paving the way for early elections in February, according to Euractiv.
Scholz requested the vote of confidence after his coalition government collapsed in November. According to the vote, 207 lawmakers voted in favour of Scholz, 394 against and 116 abstained. That is well below the 367-vote majority needed in the 733-seat Bundestag.
The ruling coalition lost its majority after the Free Democrats left over the economic policy dispute. The FDP and opposition parties, including the Christian Democrats (CDU), were expected to vote against the chancellor.
The Greens, Scholz’s remaining coalition partners, made it clear they would abstain. This would help avoid a scenario in which deputies from the Alternative for Germany (AfD) vote for Scholz to thwart his plans for early elections.
Scholz is likely to request German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to dissolve parliament in order to hold snap elections in February. According to the timetable that Scholz presented after talks with Steinmeier and the opposition, the dissolution is scheduled for 27 December.

Okay alright sorry for all the sudden German politics influx but lemme explain what happened so far and why Germans are losing it a bit:
The tldr? Our government is getting a divorce and it's turning messy with elections being called early and now being called even earlier.
Tumblr media
The longer version?
Okay so, groundwork first:
in Germany there is a coalition currently in power called the Ampel(traffic lights) bc the colours of the party are red, yellow and green (or not anymore or for much longer??). They're centrist slightly more left leaning than right leaning. (You could argue about that I am aware). There has been infighting for as long as this coalition has been going on. It is also the first three party coalition since y know, the Last Time.
So. Enough groundwork. The yellow party (FDP) has a finance minister (Christiane Lindner) it's this guy
Tumblr media
You will see him in memes I am sure. We don't like him. He's an asshole and has blocked every meaningful change that the coalition had been trying to accomplish. He also got his finance plan blocked by our highest court because parts were against our Constitution.
(.... I am oversimplifying hard here it's actually more complicated than that and not fully his fault, but it's also not the focus)
What WAS the fault though of him and the FDP was that they had a strong position of "saving money at all costs" which made bigger and bigger rifts with the two other coalition partners who were more leaftleaning. The war in Ukraine, Infrastructure, climate change - there were many places that needed more money and Lidner was like naaahhhhh for no fucking reason other than "oh we need to save money!!"
Long story short there have been arguing all the fucking time and therefore have started to lose approval. Drastically lose approval. As on for the first time since the Last Time there is a far right party in charge for part of the country that is also being investigated for being Nazis. (Oversimplifying again).
Which is. Worrying. You know. Especially with Trump now being elected. It has us all a little skittish.
The finance minister has also now been fired.
Tumblr media
You see. We were all still trying to stomach Trump winning the US election, when Scholz, in the same fucking evening, fired Lindner.
And not in a polite way. Nah. Olaf fucking Scholz our Chancellor, notorious for saying literally nothing, and with a running joke that he regularly stops existing bc that man Does Not Take Stances, a spine of wet cardboard, delivered this yesterday evening:
(English subtitles by me you already got this far watch it I spent too much time on this lol)
And it is insane alright. For his standards and German politic standards thats the equivalent of calling Lindner a egomaniacal bitch that has only his self interest at heart and can not be trusted.
Lindner and his party have been pulverised in all recent elections. Which means that after he was fired, the FDP completely withdrew from the coalition and all minister from the FDP resigned.
....well all but one who apparently stayed in his positions because he's leaving the FDP over this. What sort of shitty backstabbing kindergarten fight is this. (Jokes aside hes the minister of transportation and says he needs to stay in office in important projects. Which. True. Having minister resigning en mass is not good)
Alright cool cool cool cool. Current situation yesterday is the following:
So. Trump is president. Fuck.
Tumblr media
Lindner got fired! Yaaay!
Tumblr media
Wait my goverment is now also falling apart! Fuck.
Tumblr media
Which all lead to new elections being called in Germany.
Mind you, that's not usual ok. I know other countries have systems where they can call an election whenever but that is not a thing that normally happens here. We have a schedule alright. (Insert obligatory "Germans and their plans and structure" joke)
So new elections are called for spring, nearly a year early. Cool cool cool. With a right wing rising in Germany and deeply unpopular current leadership. On the eve of motherfucking trump getting elected.
Tumblr media
Habeck, leader of the green party and one of the few policians in germany I think is vaguely liked by ppl (the general attitude in German politics is less "I like this guy" and more "you are the least shitty choice I guess") has appearently also nearly started crying after the news broke. So. Yeah.
Now. Let's make this shitshow complete, alright?
There is this party. CDU. They had been in charge for a very long time in Germany. Centrist, right leaning, with the afd on the rising even more right leaning than before. Their current leader is Friedrich Merz, as unpleasant as human beings can go.
He has now called for the new election to be not in a few months but like. To be called next week.
In the current climate.
Tumblr media
So yeah. if you're German mutuals and friends are currently going through their own stages of grief - this is why.

Elon Musk seemingly endorsed the far-right, anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD) party on Friday.
The big picture: The X owner has used his social media platform to promote his own ideologies. Since gaining more influence in the incoming Trump administration, the billionaire CEO appears to be exercising that power over politics in the U.S. and abroad.
Musk has shown recent support for other European right-wing populist politicians, including Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni and British politician Nigel Farage, who is big Trump champion in the U.K.
Driving the news: "Only the AfD can save Germany," Musk posted on X.
His message was in response to a post from German right-wing influencer Naomi Seibt, criticizing conservative chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz.
Context: Germany will hold a snap election in February, after a center-left coalition government led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz collapsed.
AfD became the first far-right party this year to win a regional election in Germany since World War II.

A group of German civil servants have written to Chancellor Olaf Scholz and other senior ministers calling on the government to “cease arm deliveries to the Israeli government with immediate effect”. “Israel is committing crimes in Gaza that are in clear contradiction to international law and thus to the Constitution, which we are bound to as federal civil servants and public employees,” the statement says, citing the International Court of Justice’s ruling in January that Israel’s military actions are “plausible acts of genocide”. According to the organisers of the five-page statement, around 600 civil servants have voiced support for the initiative, which has slowly been gathering traction for months through professional networks and word-of-mouth across a range of ministries.

Musk interviews German AfD leader
Elon Musk took his support for Germany’s right party (AfD) to a new level on Thursday by having a live chat with its leader Alice Weidel.
Musk and Alice Weidel’s virtual meeting on Thursday came amid growing criticism of the US billionaire over his active support for far-right parties opposed to the liberal establishment across Europe and accusations of interfering in Germany’s February 23 election campaign.
In the talk, Musk showered praise on the anti-immigrant AfD, which is second in opinion polls in Germany with 21.5 per cent, behind only the conservative CDU/CSU bloc.
The nearly 75-minute conversation covered everything from energy policy and education to their joint desire to cut German bureaucracy and prevent illegal immigration. Douglas Adams, Schopenhauer, the meaning of life, whether Adolf Hitler was a socialist or a far-right extremist, and how to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict were also discussed.
Agree on everything
Musk and Weidel seemed to agree on everything, including the need to end hostilities in Ukraine, with Musk stating, “President Trump is going to solve this conflict very quickly.”
When asked”‘by what measures” that might happen, Musk seemed a little flustered. “To be clear, it’s up to President Trump. He is the commander-in-chief … I don’t want to speak for him …. But it does require strong leadership in the States.”
Asked by Weidel when he might be “ready to send human expeditions to Mars,” Elon Musk said he plans to send uncrewed spacecraft to the planet in about two years and crewed spacecraft in about four.
The billionaire said his goal was for “Martians” to be able to rescue Earthlings “in case of emergency … just as America saved Europe during World War II.”
Weidel ended the conversation after Musk outlined his life philosophy (“the question is more important than the answer”) with the help of Douglas Adams and told her about his teenage disagreements with Schopenhauer.
Musk on German politics
Musk has regularly commented on German politics since last month, when he backed the AfD, which has been classified as right-wing extremist by German intelligence. He called President Frank-Walter Steinmeier a “tyrant” for criticising the AfD and said Chancellor Olaf Scholz should resign after the terrorist attack at a Christmas market in Magdeburg that killed six people.
Last week, Elon Musk published an article in the Welt am Sonntag newspaper in which he justified the AfD’s policies and said it was wrong to call the party extreme right-wing.
Weidel and other party leaders seemed emboldened after Trump won the US election in November. Musk’s support for the party appears to have further strengthened the AfD, analysts say, and could boost its popularity among the German electorate.
Discussing the Digital Services Act
Ahead of Thursday’s speech at XSpace, the European Commission said it would scrutinise whether the debate could lead to a breach of the Digital Services Act (DSA). A spokesperson for the DSA said it had no objection to the discussion per se, rather its interest lies in the suggestion that platform X is showing a predilection for certain types of topics.
A pressure group called LobbyControl, which favours greater transparency in European politics, said it was specifically looking into whether the debate had breached German campaign finance laws, suggesting it could be seen as political advertising.
Heightened tensions over Musk’s recent alleged meddling in German politics have prompted Germany’s lower house of parliament to investigate whether the digital discussion could be considered illegal.
A spokesman for Weidel denied the allegations, saying the speech did not amount to an illegal donation to the party, but was held as a legitimate expression of free speech that was not staged.
Germany’s Federal Network Agency said it would monitor whether any algorithms on the platform were manipulated before, during or after the debate and would pass any relevant information to the DSA.
