BRAIN WOUND UPDATE #1
BRINGING YOU CURRENT INFORMATION ABOUT HOW TO HELP TREAT AND HEAL BRAIN WOUNDS: CONCUSSIONS, TBI, PTSD
This is the first of a weekly compendium of events, research, news, and insights about Brain Wounds: Concussion, TBI, PTSD. The focus is on Brain Wound healing and reduction of suicidal ideation; the use of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy as a safe and effective treatment for brain wounds; and the clinical and evidence-based proof of a new era in our understanding of how to improve brain health and Quality of Life after a brain wound. ********************* Virginia becomes 10th state to pass legislation calling for the use of Hyperbaric Oxygen to treat and heal TBI/PTSD. SENATE BILL NO. 1082 A BILL to allow the Department of Veterans Services to contract with any hyperbaric clinic or any hospital in the Commonwealth that furnishes a comprehensive treatment program to any veteran who has been certified by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs or any branch of the United States Armed Forces as having post-traumatic stress disorder or traumatic brain injury. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia: That the Department of Veterans Services may contract with any hyperbaric clinic providing medical-grade 100 percent oxygen in U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved chambers in the Commonwealth or any hospital that furnishes a comprehensive treatment program that may include medication, psychotherapy, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy, from an accredited program, to any veteran in the Commonwealth who has been certified by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs or any branch of the United States Armed Forces as having post-traumatic stress disorder or traumatic brain injury. Unanimously passed in VA House and Senate and signed into law, March 2023. Soccer: CTE cases in soccer players raise fresh questions about safety of heading the ball New diagnoses come as officials gather in Chicago for a Head Injury Summit (May 2023). The Concussion Legacy Foundation announced Tuesday that English pro and Oregon State head coach Jimmy Conway, Scottish and Seattle NASL midfielder Jimmy Gabriel, and NCAA champion Franny Pantuosco also were found to have the degenerative brain disease that has been linked to concussions in athletes, combat veterans and others who have sustained repeated head trauma. They are the first diagnoses among those who played in the NASL, a precursor to MLS as the top U.S. pro soccer league that attracted attention with high-profile signings — including Pele — before folding in 1985. Early Brain Amyloid Accumulation at PET in Military Instructors Exposed to Subconcussive Blast Injuries Early brain amyloid β deposition was found in the brains of otherwise healthy adult men exposed to repeated subconcussive blast injury using amyloid PET. Military instructors who were routinely exposed to repeated blast events were evaluated at two different points: baseline (before blast exposure from breacher or grenade) and approximately 5 months after baseline (after blast exposure). Age-matched healthy control participants not exposed to blasts and without a history of brain injury were evaluated at similar two points. Neurocognitive evaluation was performed with standard neuropsychologic testing in both groups. In the blast-exposed participants, four brain regions showed significantly increased amyloid deposition after blast exposure. . . No amyloid deposition was observed in the control participants. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in the Treatment of Acute Severe Traumatic Brain Injury: A Systematic Review This review summarizes 40 years of clinical and pre-clinical research on the treatment of acute TBI with hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO2) in the context of an impending National Institute of Neurologic Disorders and Stroke–funded, multi-center, randomized, adaptive Phase II clinical trial —the Hyperbaric Oxygen Brain Injury Treatment (HOBIT) trial.... These studies provided evidence that HBO2 significantly improves physiologic measures without causing cerebral or pulmonary toxicity and can potentially improve clinical outcome. These results were consistent across the other four reviewed clinical studies, thus providing preliminary clinical data supporting the HOBIT trial. This comprehensive review demonstrates that HBO2 has the potential to be the first significant treatment in the acute phase of severe TBI. Fighting and Penalty Minutes Associated With Long-term Mortality Among National Hockey League Players, 1967 to 2022 National Hockey League (NHL) "enforcers" with 50 or more career fights or 3 or more penalty minutes per game died 10 years earlier and more often of drug overdose and suicide when compared with age-matched NHL player controls. This matched cohort study of 6039 NHL players from 1967 to 2022 confirmed that NHL enforcers died at similar rates but approximately 10 years earlier when compared with NHL controls. Furthermore, the causes of death in the 21 enforcers included neurodegenerative disorders, drug overdose, suicide, and motor vehicle crashes, whereas only 1 of the 24 age-matched controls died of any of these causes (motor vehicle crash). The information provided by TreatNOW.org does not constitute a medical recommendation. It is intended for informational purposes only, and no claims, either real or implied, are being made. Golden Goose Creative recommends Health & Wellness Podcasts for Women
Golden Goose Creative is the home to the creative female podcaster who needs post-production and other podcasting support like building strategic plans to grow listeners, monetization, and more. The women-owned business takes on the complexity of podcast operations, enabling female podcasters to focus on other areas of their business while putting out episodes regularly.
The female owners of Golden Goose Creative — Aleea and Hav — also produce a regular blog with helpful tips for podcasters and recommendations for podcast listeners.
Here’s an excerpt from their blog:
“Taking care of our businesses and podcasts are important. But we also need to take care of ourselves. As women, we tend to put other people’s needs above our own, whether that be our kids, pets, partners or other friends and family members. Of course, all of that is still important but taking care of our own welling being is important too. As they say, filling up our own cups will help us fill up others. We can’t fill others from an empty cup! So, today, let’s jump in as I cover some of our favorite health + wellness podcasts for women.”
They go on to recommend several health and wellness podcasts for women, including the Courageous Wellness Podcast. It’s hosted by Aly French and Erica Stein, who are both certified Integrative Nutrition Health Coaches with advanced training in gut health and hormone health. The show itself is about de-stigmatizing conversations in the wellness space and celebrating the experiences/lessons of their guests. They interview diverse people about their personal journeys in health and wellness. From physical wellness, to emotional and spiritual, they are listening to courageous stories.
They go on to recommend five more excellent health and wellness podcasts for women. Check out those recommendations here.
If you’re a female aspirational podcaster, check out Aleea and Hav from Golden Goose Creative. They are happy to also discuss their footwear choice, with Aleea admitting she’s a “A fuzzy socks and crocs kind of gal,” and Hav noting “90 percent of the time you’ll catch me in sneakers” but then confessing, “I’ll never up my love for cute heels.”
Open To Debate podcast tackles Carbon Capture
This week, nonpartisan debate podcast Open to Debate tackles the question: “Is Carbon Capture Essential to Fighting Climate Change?”
When it comes to carbon dioxide, last year was a record year. The world emitted more of the climate-warming gas in 2022 than in any year since scientists began recording levels in 1900. So … what can be done to prevent dangerous levels of warming? One potential method is called carbon capture and storage, a technology in which CO2 is extracted and stored in underground facilities. In fact, as recently as February, Exxon Mobil announced that it will use Honeywell technology in Texas to capture some seven million tons of carbon dioxide per year. Other companies, meanwhile, have followed suit.
But it is not without controversy. Critics say the technology is not cost-effective, is unreliable in large scales, and that the level of carbon removal needed to help the planet is well beyond current capacity. As such, they say, it is a dangerous distraction in the broader fight against climate change, potentially diluting the urgency in reducing emissions. Others say these systems are ever more adept at capturing gases from the air, and that they have the potential to become a critical tool in the battle against rising emissions.
Arguing YES, carbon capture is an essential tool in the climate fight, is Katherine Romanak, Research Scientist for Bureau of Economic Geology. Arguing NO is Mark Z. Jacobson, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University and Director of its Atmosphere/Energy Program.

Stay-At-Home Parents: How to Start a Small Business
Starting a small business can be a great way for stay-at-home parents to earn additional income while still having the flexibility to take care of their family. However, not all small businesses require an e-commerce component. In this article, we'll explore some non-e-commerce small business ideas that stay-at-home parents can consider.
Freelance Writing
If you have a passion for writing and a way with words, then freelance writing could be the perfect small business for you. There are countless businesses and individuals who need content for their websites, blogs, social media accounts, and marketing materials, and they're often willing to pay for it. To get started, you can create a portfolio of your writing samples and pitch your services to potential clients. You can also sign up for freelance platforms like Upwork or Fiverr to find writing gigs.
Virtual Bookkeeping
If you have a knack for numbers and financial management, virtual bookkeeping can be an excellent small business idea for you. Many small businesses struggle with managing their finances, and they need bookkeepers to keep their books in order. To start your virtual bookkeeping business, you can take online courses to learn bookkeeping and accounting skills. You can also sign up for cloud-based accounting software like QuickBooks, Xero, or FreshBooks to manage your clients' books remotely.
Social Media Management
As social media continues to dominate the marketing landscape, businesses are in constant need of social media management services. Social media managers create and curate content, schedule posts, engage with followers, and analyze social media metrics. To start your social media management business, you can showcase your social media skills by building your own following and engagement on social media platforms. You can also take online courses to learn more about social media marketing and management.
Tutoring
If you have a teaching background or expertise in a specific subject, tutoring can be an excellent small business for you. Many parents are willing to pay for one-on-one tutoring services for their children, and there's also a demand for adult education and professional development. To start your tutoring business, you can create a website or profile on tutoring platforms like TutorMe or Chegg. You can also promote your services through social media and word of mouth.
Personal Training
If you're passionate about fitness and health, personal training can be a fulfilling and lucrative small business idea. Personal trainers work with clients to create customized workout and nutrition plans, provide coaching and motivation, and track progress. To start your personal training business, you can get certified through organizations like NASM, ACE, or ACSM. You can also promote your services through social media and local advertising.

This requires strong time management skills and a willingness to prioritize your business goals. - Limited resources: Starting a small business can require a significant investment of time and money, and as a stay-at-home parent, you may have limited resources to invest. This can make it challenging to get your business off the ground and attract new clients or customers. - Balancing work and family: Starting a small business as a stay-at-home parent can blur the lines between work and family time. It can be difficult to find the right balance between building your business and taking care of your family, and this can lead to feelings of guilt or stress. - Limited social network: Stay-at-home parents may have a limited social network, especially if they have recently moved to a new area or have been out of the workforce for a while. This can make it challenging to find clients or customers and to network with other business owners. An Introduction...
Wow, is this weird. Hi, internet! I haven't been on Tumblr for 6 years, but I needed a place to share my writing, so here I am!
This page is very under construction at the moment, so thank you for baring with the dust.
Allow me to explain-- I go by Kitty here on the world wide web, and I am an avid writer. I know Tumblr used to love labels back in the day, so maybe that's a good place to start.
I'm part of several different communities. I'm disabled, nerudivergent, queer and optimistic out of spite. Naturally, the subjects of my writing often involve these topics. Professionally, I've worked in food for most of my career and done everything from cooking to managing with some minor PR and social media sprinkled throughout. For the last four or five years of my career, I've focused a lot on teaching, training and coaching in the professional setting. I eventually went on to become a very under-paid public tutor and now am a private tutor as well! I still have a day job, but like every aspirational 1099-er, I hope to one day, well, you know, not. That's part of why I've been sharing my writing more these days.
I live a pretty quiet, easygoing life with my partner and our pets. I am life-long poet, a certified coffee guru, the child of multigenerational rock-hounding, an avid hiker and and a stereotypical Pilates wife. My disabilities might make things inconvenient but I take tremendous pleasure in making people feel ashamed of themselves for underestimating me.
That's a little bit about me! Now, about the blog-- I'll be working on this blog in coming months. You can expect to find a diverse plethora of original content for your consumption including:
Video-Novels (yes, full on, 100k+ word novels)
Spoken Poetry
Written Poetry
Short Stories
Prose
Blog Posts
Recipes
Comedically Quotable Rants
and more!
Eventually, I will also be able to organize the resources I've amassed over my years of volunteering into what will hopefully become a helpful webpage. I was a runaway youth with a big history and I know that things can be damn hard sometimes. I have a smudge of experience with issues pertaining to mental health, physiological health-- especially for AFAB people, poverty and youth issues. That being said, I'm not comfortable engaging with minors (the voting kind, not the drinking kind, all legal adults are fine), so if I suspect you are one, I will ignore you. Good thing that Tumblr is so outdated that young people don't even know it exists anymore.
Fair warning: I am controversial occasionally.
Anyway, that's all I can muster up to write about for now.
Cheers to my future audience!

10 Tips to Training a Service Dog
Dog lovers want to understand why a canine companion has numerous benefits to say. apart from that, dogs provide professional service to parents who need them. Service dogs are more than just pets.
Here’s the way to determine which dogs are most appropriate to be service dogs, and the way do they get certified? Below may be a step-by-step instruction to getting your dog service-ready.
What Breeds Are Best for Service Work? Any breed can function as a service dog; it’s just a matter of coaching right. So for Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds, and Border Collies, these are the standard variety for the services. These dogs have usual personalities that are trainable. a much bigger dog could also be important for physical assistance like movability, but smaller breeds can perform emotional support or medical alert services.
Generally, a dog’s health and temperament are most vital to figure as a service dog. That leads us to the first step.
1 - Evaluating Age and Health for Service Dogs.
Your dog may require a daily visit to the vet. Health conditions like diabetes and arthritis are often a serious problem, which can’t add services to their responsibilities.
All service dogs must be a minimum of six months old and past the puppy phase too. they need to be neutered to form the males less hostile and females haven't any followers when on duty.
2 - Test Your Dog’s Personality
There are few dogs that are submissive, while others are often aggressive. You can’t call it simply good or bad. once you have a service animal, his temperament should narrow down the margin between these two traits. If your dog is calm and picked up, also responsive and alert, it's an honest possibility that he is often an honest fit for the task. an area vet can provide resources to see on your dog’s temperament.
3 - Evaluate if your Dog is Confident and Socialized in Various Situations
The dog has got to be confident in varying situations and with all types of individuals. When the dog is anxious or fearful, it can create a harmful scenario along the way. A fearful dog exhibits a changed visual communication like preventing his eyes, trembling, holding his tail between his legs, and sneaking during a compliant posture.
If the dog licks his lip repeatedly, he pushes out of his temperature. A confident dog will approach his master with a wagging tail and can present himself for petting.
4 - Neuter your Dog if not Done Yet.
All service dogs are neutered. this is often because males get distracted with territorial issues, while females can have a pack of dogs following her to mate. Also castrated dogs are less aggressive which is what a service dog must be.
5 - Time to coach Your Service Dog
There are those that like better to DIY training for his or her dog, whenever trainers aren't available.
It’s difficult to show heeling to a dog. It’s quite “sit” and “come here”. It’s more or less following his master wherever he goes. Many say the dog is well behaved.
Proofing or training the dog is to tune out from all distractions and to follow what's in command.
Tasking or learning the proper moves for a selected task is the easiest for masters to coach their dogs. The task includes sensing medical alerts and providing guidance.
6 - Training your Service Dog with a Clicker
The click-clack noise from a clicker training will mark a dog’s good behavior and therefore the giving of his reward. The dog associates the sound of the clicker with a treat, which makes him work eagerly. The noise marks that it's time to receive a treat from his master.
7 - Teach your Dog to not Greet people
When you work with a service dog, have him focused on you alone and not on anyone else. It’s vital as you would possibly need immediate help within the area, while the dog is running around to greet and play with people.
The dog can get distracted do you have to need any help from him. Allow the dog to differentiate the main target on you alone. If he pays attention to you, he gets a reward; otherwise taking note of strangers can’t give him a treat.
8 - Teach your Dog Specific Skills.
If you've got a disability, you'll want to show your dog with specific tasks that employment for your need. If you're stone-deaf, you'll train your dog to provide you with a warning when the doorbell rings, a phone pops, or alarm a smoke detector.
Likewise, if you've got movability issues, you would possibly want your service dog to retrieve small home items like phone, remote, or keys. the talents are often taught by proper training of your dog.
9 - Train Your Dog On Public Access
It is important that your dog can practice courtesy whenever they're with people or a team of service dogs returning and forth. The dog may learn to urinate and defecate within the proper way; leave interesting things alone which may happen at stores; and never show aggression to other service dogs and therefore the general public.
10 - Keeping You Company All The Time
When you have a trained service dog, make sure that they keep your company in which they're not denied publicly places. they ought to be legally accepted as they work as service dogs, who accompany their handlers or maybe their masters with disability. to try to do this, you would like to coach your dog to concentrate only on you.

Sounds That Scare Dogs — And What to Do About Them

Dogs don’t need to see something scary to turn into puddles of panic. There are tons of sounds that scare dogs, unfortunately. Certain sounds that scare dogs can cause them to pace, drool, shake, shadow you or desperately seek a safe refuge like inside the bathtub.
Some dogs with noise phobias can become petrified with fear even before the dreaded sound arrives, because they pick up on pre-sound warning cues.
“My dog, Rusty, is terrified of the smoke detector in our kitchen,” says Nicholas Dodman, BVMS, professor emeritus at Tufts University’s School of Veterinary Medicine, a board-certified veterinary behaviorist and lead veterinarian at the Center for Canine Behavior Studies in Salisbury, Connecticut. “He has learned that turning on our indoor grill may cause the smoke alarm to go off, so he starts to shake and tremble with fear when he sees us bring out the indoor grill. So, I distract him in another room while my wife, Linda, works the indoor grill. Rusty has learned what we call a behavioral chain, a common occurrence in dogs with noise phobias.”

By definition, veterinarians and animal behaviorists use the term “noise phobia” to describe the intense and irrational fear displayed by some dogs to certain sounds. It is important to make the distinction that fear is a normal emotional response to a real or perceived threat or situation, such as dreading the anticipated pain from a vaccination needle. However, fear can escalate to a phobia, an exaggerated and irrational response that can completely emotionally cripple a dog.
Topping the list of sounds that scare dogs:
thunderstorms
fireworks
loud trucks
gunshots
people yelling
squawking pet parrots
security alarms
smoke detectors
But your dog may develop a noise phobia to more unusual sounds based on past experience, such as the wheels of a skateboard, the buzzer on a game show on TV or the popping of bubble wrap used to pad packages.

Sounds that scare dogs and escalate into noise phobia in dogs are more common than you may realize. Dr. Dodman estimates that close to 50 percent of dogs have some signs of fear and anxiety to sounds, sights and situations. But there is no study known that breaks down the percentage of dogs with fears or phobias to perceived scary sounds.
“Fear and anxiety rank as the No. 1 issue with dogs,” says Dr. Dodman, who ran the Animal Behavior Clinic at Tufts for more than two decades and is a best-selling pet author. “No one knows for sure, but it may have to do with their physical size, shape, structure, their temperaments and/or environmental influences.”
Most of Dr. Dodman’s canine clients being treated for thunderstorm phobia tended to be large and hairy. He has treated more breeds like German Shepherd Dogs, Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers and Bernese Mountain Dogs for noise phobias than he has for breeds like Greyhounds, Shih Tzus or Dachshunds.
“A dog’s coat is a perfect receptacle for an electric charge, especially dogs with long-haired coats,” he notes. “Things and animals can get statically charged in a storm.”
Signs of fear

How a dog reacts to a fearful sound also depends on whether or not his best friend – you — are in the room or the dog is home alone.
“Clinical signs can differ, but if you are with the dog when the noise occurs, the typical behavior is for the dog to go into Velcro mode and be close to you, even press into you as the dog shakes and trembles with fear,” Dr. Dodman says. “But if you are not present to provide solace to the dog, separation anxiety is also usually present. These dogs are in extreme anxious states and tend to vocalize, have accidents on the floor and desperately try to hide or escape what they regard to be a house of horrors.”
Other signs of sounds that scare dogs can include: inappropriate chewing (your shoes, the television remote, etc.), drooling, excessive barking, diarrhea and vomiting, digging (including the living room rug), panting heavily, pacing and displaying “whale eye” — a panicky look in which you can see the whites of the eyes.
Tools to calm a noise phobia
While there is no one cure or one-size-fits-all solution to minimize sounds that scare dogs has or even make them disappear altogether, you do have plenty of tools at your disposal.
For starters, strive to be calm around your dog and avoid baby talk or panicky tones. Dogs are masters at reading our emotional states. And, consult a professional dog behaviorist or dog trainer to help modify your dog’s behavior. Keep in mind that behavior modification techniques build on small but steady successes, and you need to be patient. Never yell at your dog for his fear-related destructive behavior, as your dog could start to associate the loud noises with a punishment, too.
As for products, work with your veterinarian to see if these may aid the reaction in your dog: Anti-anxiety vests, ThunderShirts, anti-static jackets or even towel wrapping your dog to help him feel less anxious or frightened. If your dog is afraid of storms, you can try rubbing his coat with antistatic laundry dryer sheets.
Pheromone sprays and diffusers. These commercial products emit dog-appeasing pheromones that help some dogs calm down in stressful or scary situations.
Soothing music or white noise to help block out the source of the fear-causing sound.
Soundproof a crate or safe room for your dog to go to before a storm strikes.
Some dogs require supplements or prescription medication to help them cope with noise phobias, especially to thunderstorms. The popular go-to medications prescribed by veterinarians include clonidine, clomipramine, fluoxetine, benzodiazepine and Prozac. Keep in mind that your veterinarian may recommend a combination of these drugs or may prescribe for use before a storm arrives to minimize your dog’s response. Go to a holistic veterinarian if you prefer more homeopathic solutions like herbs, essential oils, Bach flower remedies or Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
Dr. Dodman shares one final key bit of advice: Don’t wait to get your pup or young dog treated for a noise phobia. “If your 10-month-old dog is starting to show signs of fear to a sound like thunder, don’t dismiss it and think you can just live with his pacing, because trust me, it will get worse if unchecked. I guarantee that. Get help sooner than later.”
When it comes to hearing, dog ears rule
Dogs have much better hearing than humans. Photography ©Azret Ayubov | Getty .
When it comes to a hearing contest, dogs have us beat, paws down. On average, there are about 12 muscles per canine ear that can be tilted, turned, raised and lowered to zero in on sounds at greater distances and wider frequencies than human ears.
Dogs can hear sounds within 67 to 45,000 hertz range as compared to people who can hear sounds within a range of 63 to 23,000. Hertz (Hz) is a measure of sound frequency or cycles per second.
That explains why your dog can be snoozing in an upstairs bedroom but hear you open a bag of potato chips in the kitchen and come bounding your way.
