1936 Ford

Way back in the dinosaur days of 1965, Pop purchased this car, in his hometown of Boelus (now sometimes referred to as Howard City) Nebraski. 

It wasn’t near this good of shape, but we did drive it home on the brand new I80 interstate 136 miles. 

I was at a very old age of 12, when Pop and I made that trip home. With Pops reputation, we got pulled over by district troopers the whole way home, all wanting to see Pop’s purchase. 

Pop was a FORD guy. Loved his Fords. His mechanical skills were very limited, but he knew about keeping up on maintenance and shiney. And did so religiously. His patrol car was always “mint”.

Some how Pop scrounged up enough money to buy this car for $300. Quite the sum of money back then. We weren’t poor, but we were far from rich. 

First thing he saved his money up for was paint,  interior, and tires. ....  As it was all chalky primer. Everything was there, but dull and dirty. Mohair seats was actually in pretty good shape, Several windows were starting to cloud over. 

Pop loved the Mohair, but door panels and head liner was rough. So he had it all done up in “Naugahyde”. Seat still covered in that, still looks good.

Tires got us home safely with no blow outs. They were so very old. One tire we had never heard of the tire company. Unlike todays tires, the compounds were different then. Tires out of the sun could virtually last for ever. Same with gasoline, Pop thru a battery in it, pulled the choke, and off we went.

Dad knew of this car for most of his life. But didn’t know of a lot of history behind it. Only thing we knew for sure was that it wasn’t the original motor. 

My job pre16 was to replace 2 of the fogged glass.  

Next up for Pop was to purchase a manifold “heater” and a mirror clock. Once he had that manifold heater, I remember him spending all day installing it. I still to this day don’t know how he did it, as his skills being so limited, and barely any tools to speak of. But he got it done.... must of been the farm boy in him. 

Pop bought the first mirror “clock” from Doug Swanson (Swanson Ford of Ceresco, second oldest ford dealer in the USA at that time). This was a rearview mirror in cab, with a windup clock built into it. Pop found a chrome/mirror shop down by cotner and south street who did the rechroming (or is it nickle plating) of the glass. They did a horrible job, but Pop was happy, as he had an original clock from 1936. 

Around this time, I became of age to drive (late 1969ish). And the 36 became my school car. It lasted in my hands less than 1 year, with that old rebuilt motor and my heavy youthful foot.... bound to happen.

A friend of that time wanted to rebuild it in shop class, and Pop was all about it. Free labor....

It was done by the time I was graduating.  But with time, i was now driving a (GASP  a 1957 Chevy Pop bought for me). And with me graduating, i was on the look out for something else to buy with my own money. Even though in todays collectible market, the 57 Chevy is very desirable, I really didn’t like that car as it was a 4 door. And back then that was a “Dads” car. If it wasn’t a tudor, it wasn’t cool.

As time rolled on, the ‘36 was Pops favorite toy, and he’d get it out several times a year. It’d heat up, but usually wasn’t too cantankerous.

Patti and I had a home intown Waverly, and the ‘36 spend a lot of time at my place..... me fixing this or that. Door jams, cracked windows, etc. 

Once we bought the acreage, its new home was here, as we had several extra buildings. Pop could once again park all of his vehicles inside. This looked like a nice little deal for everyone. 

As we were raising 3 boys, life got busy. I was a member of the Fire Dept,, Work, youth sports, ..... life in general. 

I really didn’t have time to devote to the ‘36 regularly. In fact it was rare. I was having a hard time keeping our daily drivers running, let alone a side vehicle. At this point is was getting tired again, and lots of petty issues showing up. 

Pop for several years as the boys were growing up, would just show up on my already planned out Saturday, and want to get the ‘36 out for a spin. As it was neglected, it was a promise not to start, with a dead battery. And I’d spend all if not most of my Saturday trying to get it going ..... again.

He’d pull this off once every other month or so. And I’d preach to him that we needed to store it properly, or drive it regularly. There was just no way that we could expect it just to run like a top once every other month or so. It wasn’t realistic. I’m still not sure to this day what Pop was expecting out of me.... Was I to drive it regular. Was I to keep it up to snuff. ....   But he wouldn’t for what ever reason store it, or drive it regular. I just didn’t always have the time to deal with it. 

His rule of thumb was to just warm it up....  right or wrong. I remember one time he came out to our place (the 35 was still kept at his home), hung out for a couple of hours, and it dawned on him that he had left the 36 idling in the driveway back home. In a panic he called a neighbor to go over and shut it off.

Pop didn’t have the patience to wait for me to fix all the issues, so someone he knew talked him into swapping another flat head into it with “very low” miles.... for $1500...   (early 1990 money). This if it was a good motor was a very good deal. So much so I had a hard time believing it, when I heard after it was all said and done. 

This motor really was a nightmare for him...   it had a cracked block, and boiled over no matter how short a ride you took. Antifreeze coming out of the tail pipe, radiator with constant bubbles. Pop never said a word about this motor and his deal, but kept pushing me to do something with it.... fix it. I couldn’t. And I couldn’t express it in enough ways for him to understand. As far as he was concerned no one would screw him with his money, and there is nothing wrong with that motor.

After many years of coaxing, .... I finally got him to have someone build a motor. This guy came with a reputation. Was the local Guru (he had built a flathead or 2 for Speedy Bills “speedway motors” museum). Pop being from the depression days, just couldn’t see spending that kind of money, knowing you used to could rebuild motors for $300 back in the day. He finally caved, and paid the big bux (still cheap at $3600 AND a warranty). 

I pulled the old motor, and then put the new motor in. It ran, but poorly, and spark would just go away slowly with in a few minutes.

This next part believe it or not was over 2 years of Saturdays, dragging the ‘36 over to my shop, working on it, and then dragging it back to the steel shed. JUST ABOUT EVERY SATURDAY.

Pop would come out, there’d be a son or 2, maybe nephew or 2, and we’d work on it until early afternoon. 

It’d most likely start with good spark and sound not bad. But as the day progressed, spark would just slowly go away. 

I replaced coils, spark plug wires, distributors, rewired all of the ignition, fuel. electronic ignition, hot shot coils. Over and over, several times,.... there was just no reason it wouldn’t run right.  Pop had his buddies call me and give me advice, where I’d reply, “I already have done that ..... TWICE!!”... 

Ended up sending the whole car back to guy who built the motor (all for free)...  he volunteered, as he couldn’t believe I couldn’t get it to run right.

He worked on it for few months before he figured it out. He first replaced all of  the ignition, with parts he knew worked.... nothing

And he went thru repetitious motions just like me for months. Finally it dawned on him in bed late one night. 

Flat heads love Champion spark plugs. I had bought a brand new set of Motorcrafts. I having bad luck with Champions over the years in other vehicles, so I avoided them like the plague.

He informed me of this, and even stated that the champion spark plugs that work in flathead fords are getting harder to find. 

His revelation was to check these brand new Motorcraft plugs. He tested them, and 3 out of the 8 were bad. 

Replaced them with champions.... and its been good to go ever since.

Back before this motor, I converted the old girl to 12 volts. I did this as Alternators for me were simpler to diagnose/troubleshoot (one wire chevy).

This in turn started blowing out starter buttons (mounted on the floor between clutch and brake). I didn’t recognize that the 12 volts was doing this, and just figured that the starter button was just “old”. It blew out its 3rd one just this past year, before I realized that that soft copper contacts just can’t handle the full 12 volt amps.

I’m now in the process of hooking up a solenoid to that starter button so the amps will drop down. 

This essay is kind of showing that the car has been a night mare of sorts. And for a time it really was for me personally.  

But a look back over time and the stories to go with it....   it is its own stand alone story. It can relate to every part of my adult life. Kids, friends, parades, food , holidays, dating my wife, learning, enjoying fords, ....   it just amazes me even now.... 

Once Mom and Pop passed on..... I was really considering selling it. As I just have too many other projects. The grandsons let me know what their thoughts were, and that changed that line of thought immediately.. 

It is now thru the estate of my folks 1/2 mine and 1/2 my sisters. I need to get it back together, and see if my sister still remembers how to drive it...
