karlie kloss via instagram: “Thank you @forbes for including me in your PowerWomen conference. It was an honor to be in conversation with luminaries of change like @valeriebjarrett @cecilerichards @taranajaneen @humaabedin.
We spoke about how critical it is to have access to education and reproductive rights in the fight towards gender equality, and how important it is to empower others to use their voices in their own communities.
Take action — canvas, volunteer, donate, educate. Most of all, don't forget register to vote and use your voice this November 🗳️”

Badass Women: Ann Richards
Tumblr media
So I’m guessing that if you don’t live in Texas, you have no idea who this person is, and until I listened to Dan Savage’s podcast last week (go listen--Savage Love), I had never heard of her either. Turns out, she is Cecile Richards’ mother, and if that name doesn't ring a bell, well it definitely should.
Cecile, up until this week, had been the president of Planned Parenthood for 12 years, and as it turns out, had no chance of not being a total badass, because her mother was one, too.
Ann was an only child who grew up in Waco, Texas, and was a school teacher-turned politician. When she was elected to state treasurer in 1982, she was the first woman elected to ANY statewide office in 50 years. Imagine that. She continued as state treasurer for 8 years, until she ran for governor and became only the second ever female governor of Texas in 1990. She broke records left and right, making Texas an essentially blue state (gasp, who knew?!), which in her interview with Savage, Cecile confirmed: Texas originally was a blue state, and might swing back that way in the near future with the right leadership...here’s to hoping Cecile follows in her mother’s footsteps.
Back to Ann--during her tenure as governor, she was known as a fierce feminist who made a running commentary about the state of the boy’s club that was Texas politics. She was an advocate for prison inmates, creating rehabilitation programs and reducing the number of violent offenders who were released, and also an advocate for the public school system, creating the Texas lottery in order to better support financially the school system. She was known for supporting social causes such as equality, abortion, gun reform, and women’s rights throughout her career and life.
After she was defeated by George W. Bush in 1994, she stayed active both politically and socially, campaigning for various Democratic candidates and even spending the last 5 years of her life in New York City after 9/11. She passed in 2006, of esophageal cancer most likely due to smoking and drinking in her youth.
Badass women: may we know them, may we be them, may we raise them.

In today's BARB, I am nostalgic for the days when I shuttled my child around on weekends; now that she's a Teenager, I spend my weekends alone as she dives into schoolwork, her book, her friends. Oh yes the days are indeed long and the years ever so short! Also the #womenintheworld conference is on and there are some amazing talks with #hillaryclinton #justintrudeau #cecilerichards and more. Check all of this out and more on today's Barbmagazine.com link is in the bio #supportwomen #ladieslikeus #doyourdream

It’s the best month of year...it’s #womenshistorymonth! Like last year...I’ll be sharing a photo of a woman who inspires me for the next thirty-one days. Starting off with a woman who I had the honor of working with last April...one of my heroes...Cecile Richards. Not only is Cecile one of the most eloquent speakers I have worked with, she is compassionate, driven, fierce, and just fun to hang out with...She has also been the president of Planned Parenthood for twelve years...an organization I very much support...Thank you for all that you do, Cecile...I can’t wait to see what you do next...⚡️#womenshistorymonth #feminism #empoweringwomen #cecilerichards (at The Public Theater)

It takes courage and resilience to speak out, if one can, against assault. It took even more to speak out as a black woman in the 1940s South. Rest in power, Mrs. Taylor. https://t.co/xJCaJ2WL1F

All of this information I've been posting is for horrible and repulsive - please share it with everybody you can so that we can stand up together in in the madness of killing the innocent babies. This should never have happened in the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave... be brave for those who cannot defend themselves. #Repost @anniedunn05 ・・・ #pinkout A shocking new undercover video exposes a Planned Parenthood medical director admitting that babies born alive after abortion are sometimes killed. The top Planned Parenthood official is caught on video essentially admitting that it “depends on who is in the room” as to whether or not a baby who is born alive after a failed abortion is taken to the hospital or left to die. The new undercover video shows DeShawn Taylor, previous Medical Director of Planned Parenthood of Arizona and longtime abortion practitioner at Planned Parenthood Los Angeles, graphically describing how to deliver intact fetuses in late-term abortions to harvest high-quality body parts, and indicating possible cover-up of infanticide. #plannedparenthood #ppsoldbodyparts #infanticide #abortionist #PP #cecilerichards #womenbetrayed #scumbag #corporation #watchthevideos #cmp #daviddaleiden #hero #defundplannedparenthood
