Good Friday
Tumblr media
The more you think about it, the worse it gets.
No part of the Passion Gospel, the Gospel for Good Friday, has any hope.
Even the tender moments – Jesus asking John to take care of his mother, Joseph and Nicodemus making sure that Jesus has a proper burial – they’re just people dealing with the fallout from death.
You know what Joseph and Nicodemus are thinking about while they’re wrapping Jesus’ body up for burial? How much this sucks.
And whether the Romans will stop at killing Jesus. Or will they, and other followers of Jesus, be next?
The more you think about it, the worse it gets.
You know what Joseph and Nicodemus aren’t thinking about? How anything good can come from this.
Much less how God is already using all of it to do more good than either of them, or anyone on Good Friday, could ever imagine.
And yet, you and I know, that’s exactly what’s happening. Because you and I know something that Joseph and Nicodemus don’t know. Not on that worst of Friday’s.
They don’t know that Sunday is coming.
But that’s how it is, when you’re where they are. When you are right in the middle of the very worst.
When you and I are right in the middle of the very worst, there is nothing that human eyes can see to tell us that it’s ever going to get any better.
When that’s where you are, the only open question is whether it’s going to get worse.
In the middle of everything that you are dealing with right now – whether it’s death or illness, divorce or the end of a friendship, job loss or financial problems – while you’re waiting to see whether you’ve hit bottom or if it’s going to get worse. You get Joseph and Nicodemus. You are right there with them.
The more you think about what you’re dealing with, the worse it gets.
There’s nothing that our human eyes can see to tell us that anything good can come from what you’re going through.
And yet, you and I know, that’s not true.
Because you and I know something. Something that’s easy to lose sight of when you’re in the middle. Something that’s hard to hold onto when you’re scared.
But it doesn’t matter. It’s okay if we lose sight of it. Because it’s still true. Even if we’re scared.
Today is Good Friday. And Good Friday shows us that none of it, not even the very worst, can hold down our God.
Because Sunday is coming.

My Arthurian courtly love-sick heart was expecting Alicent to try and drown herself and Criston, posted right outside her door, to barge in and save her (mirroring how she saved his life once).
I mean, I’m glad it didn’t happen, but the whole bath scene gave me such vibes.
Was I the only one?

I want a scene where Eddie goes to confession and at the end of the scene he realizes he doesn't need or even want absolution from God or a priest because the only person who can give Eddie the forgiveness he's so desperately seeking is himself.

It's a shame that Thomas is forever known for his doubt, because he has one of the most beautiful expressions of faith in the Gospels.
Doubt is only where his story starts. He's the only skeptic of the group because he's the only one who wasn't there at the first sighting. It's easy for the others to believe--they've already seen Jesus. Thomas, by only believing what he sees, is doing nothing less than what the other apostles have done. Yet as soon as he sees Jesus, he expresses faith that goes far beyond what they have shown.
His response to seeing Jesus isn't, "Oh, they were telling the truth." It's not, "You really are Jesus," or even, "You really are alive."
The first thing he says is, "My Lord and my God!"
This isn't just Thomas confirming facts. This isn't him building a scaffolding of observation and logic to work his way to understanding. This is him falling headfirst into the bright light of truth. He instantly understands that this is much more than one man risen from the dead, that the world is far more glorious than even the other apostles believed. His God is standing before him, and he doesn't hesitate to adore.
Thomas believes because he sees, but this belief goes far beyond what he can see. His exclamation isn't just an acceptance of the reality in front of his eyes, but a belief in a reality that is impossible to see or know without the gift of faith that comes from encountering the Risen Christ. The revelation and the faith are divine gifts, and Thomas' response to them is beautiful, and I think he deserves more credit for it.

There’s a general consensus that above all else Jason should be homicidal again. However I think what’s also very important is that he should be a fucking hoot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There’s nothing not funny about this entire bit.
1. He couldn’t give less of a shit about explaining that he’s single-handedly trying to stop a terrorist attack. Obviously cause he’s short on time, but even if he had all the time in the world he would still be this indifferent towards explaining himself to cops.
2. This bomb is seconds away from exploding but he’s at most mildly annoyed like he’s in the office doing some menial task.
3. The perfectly timed British jokes.
4. Circling back to number 1 on the list. After he throws the bomb into the water he just dips. For all they know he’s the (weird) terrorist. (But as long as everyone’s okay he doesn’t care! The beauty of Jason Todd everybody).

This one is funny (but it’s also true)? Like yes … that is exactly what you are. (A sweet, kind-hearted goodboy learning how to effectively poison people, shoot guns, and blow shit up with all manner of explosives like a certified pro).

Red Hood: The Lost Days #4 (2010-)
“Not so irritating for an American” is a far more impressive title than “genius” if you ask me. Although I think Jason balances both pretty well.

NPC’s
Tumblr media
(by request)
In the first century, Roman jailers were tortured and put to death if their prisoners escaped.
That’s the backstory to the jailer’s reaction to the earthquake at the jail in today’s first reading.
The foundations of the jail shake, the doors fly open, the chains are pulled loose.
The jailer sees this, assumes that his prisoners (Paul and Silas) have escaped, and prepares to kill himself. Because he knows what they do to jailers.
In that moment of despair, Paul calls out to the jailer, “Do no harm to yourself, we are all here.”
When they could have escaped, Paul and Silas didn’t. Why?
Because Paul and Silas know what they do to jailers.
It would have been so easy for them to run away after the earthquake. Paul and Silas had every reason to do it.
Their friends would have been so happy for them to be free. No one would have given the jailer a second thought.
But Paul and Silas? They knew what running away would mean for the jailer.
So, they stayed. And made sure that the jailer didn’t take his own life.
Why? What makes the jailer so special? All we know about him is his job. In the narrative, he’s part of the scenery, a nameless background character. In gaming terms, he’s an NPC (non-player character).
But that’s not how God sees things. In God’s eyes, there are no nameless background characters.
Paul and Silas are instruments of God’s grace, to be sure. But if we’re only looking at Paul and Silas, then we’ve missed the point of the earthquake at the jail and everything that followed.
Everything that happened wasn’t done for show, so that people would be impressed with Paul and Silas.
As St. John Chrysostom tells us, it was all done for the jailer – “not for show but for salvation.”
It was all done so that someone who was part of the scenery, a nameless background character to everyone else, might know how much he mattered to God. That to God, “he was worthy of salvation.”
That is how God looks at each one of us.
Because in God’s eyes, there are no NPC’s.
