I am not shamed to admit that I am a traditional Catholic…
As a “trad” as many people refer to me as, it is important to remember some key elements. When learning theology you can’t use the clips and phrases found on News media (both secular and Catholic) as your end all be all. I have been keeping up with the most recent synod…to see the current reactions and stretches that have been made have been appalling. Linked on the post I have the direct Vatican source as well as a unbiased (as far as I am able to discern) video going over the most recent dubias. The behavior and reactions of those who seemingly hold the title of Catholic is sickening at their ability to scorn and denounce the Pope over wicked lies and false information.
As Catholics we must submit to and pray for our Holy See!
We are not called to ‘like’ him or think he is the best Pope to ever grace our history, but remember what our Bible says…
Romans 5:8 “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Ephesians 4:32 “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.”
Matthew 25:40 “The King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me”
But I continue, we are called to love and support each other. Everyone knows the phrase “love the sinner hate the sin” and although I do not believe that the Pope is the sinner in this situation it reminds us that we are all fallen and are trying to live like Saints, so listen to the words of the man trying to guide us and make prudent decisions when listening…

i think what people don't realize is that the current pope did meet with catholic intersex and catholic trans people during the october synod, so catholic intersex and trans people exist (even when the pope will be carefully bigoted about it), and while im not catholic anymore it's not exactly the gender-religion contradiction "this film is unrealistic and hilarious because catholics are incapable of change" some people make it out to be
#well to be fair only one person said that. and i blocked them <3#conclave#anyways the october synod is how i learned about the catholic lesbian married couple my mom worked with. i dont keep up with anything#unless someone's waving a dog bone at me that perhaps ill get closure on this. but i never do#the idea that god exists and loves me is gone. i'm fine with that. problem is 'the hope that#something good is finally going to happen' never altogether leaves.

"In March 2013, Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio gave a short speech to the assembled Cardinals before the conclave wherein he described his vision for a Church that was far less “self-referential”. He instead sought a Church serious about reading the signs of the times and responding to them with pastoral creativity and fervor.
But what has become of this vision over eleven years later?
The Synod on Synodality, one of the capstone projects of this papacy, is a very self-referential set of processes now three years in the making. Furthermore, this exercise is not only an exercise in self-referentiality, but it is also a distraction from the true pastoral needs of our time. It is a wasted moment when there are so few moments that can afford to be so wasted in the current cultural crisis."

Literature connected to Whitby:
Dracula by Bram Stoker
Marmion by Sir Walter Scott (sort of—he took the abbey's name and its founder's and transferred them to Lindisfarne)
The Ecclesiastical History of the English People by the Venerable Bede (the Synod of Whitby is the climax of the history's third volume)
Caedmon's Hymn (probably the oldest surviving English poem, composed at Whitby)
#i have not read bede but i read a LITTLE bit of bede on my english trip for one the lectures#and it was about how the synod of whitby brought the british church calendar into union with rome's#dracula#(glancingly)#catholic#(implicitly)#also if anyone out there wants to assign mina harker a patron saint i'd like to nominate st. hilda who founded the whitby abbey#princess and abbess and renowned for her wisdom apparently--seems like a solid choice!

Day One of being Norwegian: reading up on the Norwegian Lutheran church of America which founded something like 14 synods, including one called the Anti-Missourian Brotherhood...
#missouri synod luterans are the No Fun/no dancing lutherans#so it made me happy to see these crabby norwegians making a whole synod to piss them off#also still in awe that my grandfather was raised by a bunch of lutherans and still wound up being the most catholic dude I've ever met

I'd say the children of people who shouldn't have had kids.
Still, fully agreed.
we are the daughters of parents who should not have had kids
#my parents were abused like all hell#then gave into the pressure to have children despite having no plan on how to NOT DO THAT#the society they lived in demanded they have children to Be Good People#and then when their first kid overwhelmed them? ... they found a church#that taught them all humans are inherently sinful and we're just running out the clock till judgement day#MA'S PARENTS DIDN'T RAISE HER IN ANY FAITH BECAUSE THEY DISAGREED AND DIDN'T WANNA FIGHT ABOUT IT#grandpa is catholic grandma is lutheran#dad was raised Missori Synod#which is as close as you can get to Roman Catholic while calling yourself a lutheran#they still did corporal pinishment i.e hitting kids in Sunday School#so when mom's mental health got even more difficult to manage with a CHILD TO RAISE and the HORMONAL HELL after delivery#and dad decided the way to fix it was to introduce her to jesus#and then both of them just defaulted into Do As We Say Not As We Do#expecting us to be Glorious Savants in everything we did and NEVER giving us any credit#expecting us to THANK GOD that we met expectations instead of our parents recognizing our efforts#while all wrongdoing was ALWAYS fully OUR fault#no one elses#and misunderstandings got us screamed at for lying#while Ma listened to Rush Limbah on the radio every day from before I was born to the day that hateful fuckwit died#my parents had a chance to break the cycle and heal#and didn't#and passed their traumas on to their kids through NEGLECT and failure to ENGAGE WITH THEIR OWN CIRCUMATANCES AND DO BETTER#inflicted poverty trauma on us despite us being well off by screaming at us whenever we asked for something we didn't capital N Need#but casually financing a fancy new boat for them to go fishing Because They Earned It#inflicted generational trauma by making the same demands as their parents despite telling us exactly how those demands did them harm#enforced gender roles despite ma being the most “traditionally masculine” human being I know#and dad's happy place being in the home cooking and cleaning and supporting the family unit#but dad had the good job so he didn't get to be where he was happy#and ma being denied work and decent wages and blaming it on immigrants instead of grappling with Sexism Still Being A Thing#like... yall got SO close

#OTD in 1642 – A Catholic confederacy (‘the Confederation of Kilkenny’) is instituted to administer Catholic-controlled parts of the country pending a final settlement.
The Roman Catholic clergy of Ireland held a national synod at Kilkenny in Leinster to discuss ways of controlling the Irish Uprising and of achieving national unity against the Protestant invaders. With representatives of the native Irish nobility and the Catholic “Old English” aristocracy in attendance, an alternative government for Ireland was proposed. Asserting their loyalty to King Charles,…

"This pontificate is marked by a deep bifurcation, if not an open contradiction, between what it says and what it does. It talks big about synodality and collaboration and listening, but then does whatever it wants in largely old-fashioned, non-synodal, autocratic ways. And all it is going to do is breed more cynicism, more division, and more rejection of the so-called synodal way as at best an irrelevance and at worst a Trojan Horse for progressive causes."
— Larry Chapp: "Synodality for me, but not for D.C.: On the McElroy appointment"

Archbishop Chaput Offers Advice to the Synod on Synodality ‘The Church belongs to Jesus Christ,’ he underscored.
"Referring to the theme of the gathering in Rome, “For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation and Mission,” the archbishop emeritus explained that “‘communion’ is not a matter of shared opinion but shared faithfulness to truth received.”
“‘Participation’ is the task of bending our own wills to that truth. And ‘mission’ is the pursuit of Our Lord’s Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20): not simply being leaven in the world, as vital as that is, but making disciples of all nations,” he wrote."
… “Jesus was crucified precisely because he did not conform or accommodate, but rather bore witness to his Father,” he said, noting that when he “accompanied the disciples on the road to Emmaus, he directed them to the Scriptures and the truth … and it was only then that they recognized him.”
