So, let's go into it more, we have Dragon Age first:

Marian is on perfect forehead kissing height for Merrill. Marian is a half-elf rogue, in my Medievalpunk DA2 crossover fic, where she tries to navigate all the hostilities of Kirkwall while keeping her family safe, and catching very unexpected feelings for the Dalish elf that fell into her life. Fic(s): Tender Love warms Cold Hearts (Rated E for gore, NSFW scenes are marked to skip easily)

Faith is a film student moving to Kirkwall, where she meets Merrill in her class. the fic is largely a meditation on religion, with Faith struggling to find her identity as a half-elf, and where she fits in with the Elvhen religion because of it. She was shunned by the elves in her hometown, but Merrill is very eager to make her feel included. Faith can also comfortably nestle herself under Merrill's chin, making for very comfy cuddles. Fic(s): Have Faith in Me (Rated T, does not contain violence or smut)

Cassidy appeared to me in a dream, so doesn't have a firmly rooted story yet, but towers over her girlfriends, and is very comfortable cuddling with them both piled on top of her. No fics yet

Almithara reluctantly took up the position of Inquisitor, and Sera was one of the few levities that made the job bearable for her. She fell in love quite quickly, and does anything to keep her archer safe. No fics yet, but hopefully soon.

Jane has always given everything to help others, and neglecting herself in the process. but Liara can cut through that, and recognizes the deep emotional needs inside her. Fic(s): Stolen Nights among the stars: A M rated one-shot about Liara strugglign to keep the relationship hidden from the rest of the crew Orbitting the Shadow of my Twin: A M Rated longfic, with two shepards on opposite sides.

Kate Shepard towers over both of her lovers, even if she is slightly shorter than her twin sister. She is ruthless, not holding back to obtain her goals no matter the costs. But Thane makes her see the parts of life worth loving, and Samantha reminds her that she is someone who deserves to be loved regardless of the situations she is thrust into. Fic(s): Make me forget my worries: An E rated very smutty one-shot with her emotional vulnerability around Thane. Orbitting the Shadow of my twin: A M rated longfic, with two Shepards, where Kate is forced to go after her own sister.

Demi is the main character of my original work Untethered, that I honestly think hasn't aged greatly and am tempted to rewrite. She has DID, and discovers this, and meets her headmate Avelyn around the same time she develops her crush on Jess. Fic(s): Untethered an E rated fic that, honestly, in my own opinion is too smutty and needs to be toned down. ohhhhh my god why did i make this script so long my hand hurts this took forever aaaaagh

Welcome to the Lucky 38! This is a script that has remained basically the same for a long time but went through COUNTLESS extremely small rewrites over the course of production just to really nail Mr. House's dialogue. He's a long-winded guy, this whole issue is basically just him doing monologues, and I wanted to make sure it was all interesting and non-repetitive. I think I took out at least three uses of "merely" from the first draft.

One of the biggest production decisions of this issue was whether or not to cut the scene with Agnes and Cass and Victor, which immediately follows the end of the previous issue. The reason to include it was because it very necessarily established the change in location from the Vegas Strip to the Lucky 38 penthouse, which would have been jarring otherwise; the reason to exclude it was that it the issue was already extremely long and I thought opening right on Mr. House would have been more impactful. Ultimately, I did keep it, which was a good decision, but only because of the literally issue-saving idea to convey it as closed-circuit television footage instead of actual panels. Every single attempt at overlaying them with the lead-in to Mr. House was way too busy, but that idea really tied the page together like a nice rug.

And lastly, the framing device of the tarantula and the tarantula hawk was actually an extremely late addition to the comic. I had already finished the first three pages when I thought of it. My problem was that Mr. House's constant monologuing and Agnes' sad expressions got pretty repetitive. I needed something to break the action up while adding thematic heft and artistic variety. I've become a real enthusiast for wasps and tarantulas over the last couple months, so this one really was just a stroke of luck. It took only minimal revisions to make room for the framing device, with the most dramatic change being the complete replacement of the last page (which was originally just a splash page of the Lucky 38 in Vegas; bookending the first and last pages is so much better). So you see, the only reason for weaving a scene into this issue of a skittish desert-wanderer getting paralyzed and dragged toward a certain demise by a predator almost perfectly evolved to destroy it was just that I like bugs a lot. That's the only reason, yep.

Original Pencils:

Due to all of the photo-collage in the final version of the comic, there's a lot of panels and details that I (thankfully!) didn't have to draw myself. Sorry that the pencil isn't blue on the last three pages, I've been on the move for the holidays so they got scanned in grayscale by accident.

I did experiment with drawing the tarantula framing device myself, but ultimately went with the photo-collage method because the artistic juxtaposition actually made it much more readable when interspersed with the proceedings in the Lucky 38.

Transcript:

EXT. DESERT OUTSIDE OF NEW VEGAS. The city glitters in the distance, nestled between the shadows of mountains, with the spire of the LUCKY 38 towering above all else.

In the wilderness, a TARANTULA emerges from its burrow.

EXT. THE NEW VEGAS STRIP. On closed-circuit television monitors, a SECURITRON ROBOT approaches AGNES SANDS and ROSE OF SHARON CASSIDY, saying

VICTOR: Well howdy, partner! Fancy meetin' again here in Vegas!

CASS: What the fuck?

AGNES: Victor?

Unlike the usual police units, VICTOR's robotic "face" is that of a cowboy.

VICTOR: And heck, ya clean up nice! Sure lookin' a lot better now than when I rustled ya outta the bone orchard back in Goodsprings*--

CAP: *As was explained to Agnes way back in IKROAH #2. --Lou

VICTOR: --so how's about ol' Vic skips the rigamarole, huh? 'Fore all my yappin' makes ya want to go back, heh-heh-heh! I'm the welcome wagon, see. I'm to come and collect ya.

CASS: Agnes--

VICTOR: Boss wants t'see you, is what I'm sayin'.

AGNES: Boss?

VICTOR: Only of all of Vegas, friend!

CASS: Agnes.

MEANWHILE, the TARANTULA crawls beneath the starlight.

VICTOR: So why don't we mosey on over to the Lucky 38? And your good pal can come along, too!

CASS: I need to know what the fuck is going on, right now.

AGNES: I...I don't know.

VICTOR: And y'know, boss ain't ever let a soul inside before, least for not as long as I've been rollin' around on my spurs, so this ain't just an everyday social call, mind...

On the closed-circuit television monitors, VICTOR escorts AGNES and CASS to the entryway of the LUCKY 38.

VICTOR: ...but heck, I reckon ya'll oughta get along like franks on a fire! So come on! Lift's in the lobby here, and up to the top floor--and we can get the formalities out of the way before ya'll get [cut off]

INT. THE LUCKY 38 PENTHOUSE.

AGNES stands awestruck, looking upward, bathed in electronic green light. With horror, she ekes out a single question.

AGNES: ...what are you?

???: A "Hello" would have been preferable, but it'll take more than a crude faux pas to tarnish this moment. Who I am, Agnes--

What AGNES is looking at is a gigantic SUPERCOMPUTER and terminal, flanked by closed-circuit television monitors and guarded on both sides by SECURITRON police units. On the supercomputer's massive screen is the green-lit image of a face. The face

MR. HOUSE: --is ROBERT EDWIN HOUSE. The President, CEO, and sole proprietor of New Vegas--and more to the point, the intended recipient of a long delayed package.

AGNES: Oh, you...you mean the platinum chip?

MR. HOUSE: Correct. It's a...very precious artifact of the old world.

MR. HOUSE: My world, once.

In the back of the room, beyond AGNES, is an oil painting of MR. HOUSE, standing outside in front of what must have been a very large robot.

MR. HOUSE: In that world, I was the founder of RobCo Industries--a titan of innovation. We created a litany of robotic solutions for diverse markets, such as the Securitrons that you see here, and even a line of consumer-grade devices like the wrist-mounted Pip-Boy. But the platinum chip was, more than any other, my design. It was my vision.

MR. HOUSE: But it never left the factory in which it was originally made. Before it could even cool off from its assembly...we had the Great War. An international, thermonuclear bombardment of unimaginable power that annihilated the world in all of two hours.

MR. HOUSE: But not the entire world. Not Vegas. Not my Paradise. From my fortress of the Lucky 38, I saw to that. But as for the rest of the world, and my platinum chip--it took generations.

MR. HOUSE: First for the scarce remnants of humanity to crawl out from under their rocks, and for the world to at least resemble a functioning society again in which to do trade. And then for the work itself--of countless scavengers, treasure-seekers, and the like, all contracted to comb over the wreckage of Sunnyvale. It cost millions of caps, and later, New California dollars. And a not insignificant piece of my pre-war fortune as well. I, quite literally, moved mountains.

MR. HOUSE: I do not believe in providence, Agnes, but I do believe in destiny. How else to explain it? It was pristine when it was found. Neither the bombs nor the passage of time had so much as scuffed its sheen. But still...its value far transcended the mere market price of pure platinum.

MR. HOUSE: Amusingly, despite the discovery, I was still only as close to acquiring the chip as I had been originally in 2077. A final ordeal remained for me: how to ensure the safety of the platinum chip en route to its destination, from Sunnyvale to Vegas, without broadcasting its preciousness to thieves, armies, and raiders--or worse, to heavily armed fetishists for pre-war technology like the Brotherhood of Steel?

MR. HOUSE: Misdirection. Through a network of anonymous liaisons, I contracted the Mojave Express for a batch of deliveries, all superficially similar knick-knacks, to various intermediaries of myself. All but one of the orders were totally worthless decoys. But your identity as the carrier of the one genuine item was somehow compromised, leading to you getting attacked, and to the second disappearance of the chip.

MR. HOUSE: But look around you. Look where you are. You've made it, haven't you?

AGNES, still staring up at the visage of MR. HOUSE on-screen, doesn't respond. She frowns, nervous. The SECURITRONS guarding MR. HOUSE observe her stoically.

MR. HOUSE: Let me clarify: I had nothing to do with Benny's ambush. Heavens no! It goes completely against my interests. It would have been a perfectly quotidian day's work for you if not for his, and I stress, unexpected involvement. The platinum chip...belies its significance. For Benny to have not only discovered its delivery route but possibly enough of that significance to motivate such an act, this constituted a very troubling breach of my security. And I had been looking into it...but in a way, the issue seems to have resolved itself. Hm?

MR. HOUSE: A wild card. Now removed from the deck.

AGNES' gaze sinks to the floor.

MEANWHILE, a small shadow blots out the starlight in the desert outside of Vegas. It flies over the exploring TARANTULA.

AGNES looks back up at MR. HOUSE.

AGNES: I killed him.

HOUSE: So you did. I only wish that we could have spoken before you went rogue on my former protégé: if this story breaks, I can grant you amnesty, but not without controversy. And your infamy as an assassin could make our further arrangements quite difficult.

AGNES: Um...I didn't think there would be more to it than delivering the--

MR. HOUSE: Oh! Of course, of course! My apologies. Two hundred years of anticipation and yet I'm still getting ahead of myself. Well--would you mind? I've been waiting a long time for my mail.

The SECURITRON closest to AGNES wheels forward with its claw outstretched. AGNES reaches her fingers into a pocket beneath the belt of her dress to produce it: the PLATINUM CHIP. She holds it in her hand for a brief moment.

MEANWHILE, the shadow descends; the TARANTULA HAWK engages the TARANTULA.

AGNES relinquishes the PLATINUM CHIP to the SECURITRON.

MR. HOUSE: Thank you--it's a relief to pay for this chip for the final time.

The SECURITRON inserts the PLATINUM CHIP into a slot in MR. HOUSE'S supercomputer, feeding it into the drive with a CLIK.

MEANWHILE, the TARANTULA is fighting the TARANTULA HAWK.

From behind AGNES, another SECURITRON presents her with a stack of NEW CALIFORNIA REPUBLIC DOLLARS, which she gingerly takes in her hand and looks over.

MR. HOUSE: And I trust that you're satisfied with the agreed-upon compensation from the delivery contract, yes?

AGNES: Yeah, it's...it's fine...I'll be going now. Thanks.

MR. HOUSE: Oh? But you've only just arrived. I insist that you make yourself at home.

SFX: KZZSZZZTTT

The faces on the screens of the SECURITRONS in MR. HOUSE'S penthouse suddenly change from policemen to soldiers. AGNES recoils and tries to step away.

AGNES: H-hey, uh--

MEANWHILE, the TARANTULA HAWK pierces the underbelly of the TARANTULA with its stinger.

SECURITRONS surround AGNES.

MR. HOUSE: You are the first guest ever through the doors of the Lucky 38, you know. Nobody has so much as checked a coat inside since the war, so this meeting confers you a significant level of privilege...and inevitable celebrity. The people of Vegas have always gossiped, after all. Many have even clawed at the door desperately with dreams of being where you now stand. Surely you can comprehend how this compulsion to leave after such a deliberate and remarkable invitation risks considerable insult--to both myself and my citizenry? And very deliberate this invitation was. Don't you realize: if handing off my package was all for which you were needed, why wouldn't I have just had Victor relieve you of the chip outside? No, no, you see, as necessary as its acquisition was, the chip is ultimately just a key, for unlocking a new frontier...of possibilities.

MR. HOUSE: Possibilities for prosperity, peace, and technological advancement that haven't been seen in two hundred years. Possibilities greater than anything the New California Republic or Caesar's Legion could dream of, let alone achieve, by playing pretend in the clothes of their forebearers and convincing everyone else that it's statecraft. Possibilities--which if they key is turned by human hands--become certainties.

AGNES (a whisper): Are you not human?

MR. HOUSE: Don't let the video screens and computer terminals fool you: I am a living human. No less so than you. I just live with a particular set of, well...handicaps.

AGNES: You said you'd waited hundreds of years to--

MR. HOUSE: One could argue that the world has been waiting hundreds of years for this moment. Waiting for me. For the chip. For the long-dormant doors of the Lucky 38 to finally open, to a single and specially ordained individual: you, Agnes. And there are tremendous things waiting for us, waiting for us to accomplish them, together. I certainly couldn't do them with Benny. What do you say?

MEANWHILE, the TARANTULA has become completely paralyzed by the TARANTULA HAWK'S venom. The TARANTULA HAWK seizes its prey.

AGNES: ...no.

MR. HOUSE: I'm sorry--"No?"

AGNES: Yes--I mean, no. No! I don't want to help you! I...

Tears well in AGNES' eye.

AGNES: ...I just want to go back home.

MR. HOUSE: ...I see. Hmm.

MR. HOUSE: How do I put this in a way you'll understand?

MR. HOUSE: The die is cast.

AGNES, crying, looks up at MR. HOUSE again. Fear bulges on her face.

MR. HOUSE: Throughout the long delivery of this chip, several precise plans and fortuitous coincidences have aligned in just such a way as to make you, you specifically at this exact juncture, an irreplaceable asset in the ongoing endeavor of this wounded world's recovery from otherwise hopeless ruin.

MR. HOUSE: Your cooperation going forward is not merely crucial to this endeavor's success, but it's utterly non-negotiable. Should you entertain the moral issue of what's at stake, it's obligatory, even. It's why your refusal comes as such a...genuine surprise. Can't you see?

MR. HOUSE: I'm not a fascist, Agnes--I would never force you. But given the circumstances, I'm entitled, wouldn't you agree, to at least a brief demonstration of my vision? The vision that the platinum chip promises? Victor has surely seen your companion to the presidential suite by now--my other Securitrons can escort you to the basement, where I'm sure you can make a...properly informed decision.

The SECURITRONS close in on AGNES, who screams in protest.

AGNES: No! I said no! I already delivered your chip, I--I killed Benny! I-- I-- ...what do you want with me!?

MR. HOUSE: Haven't you been listening? I want what's best for you--for us. I know it's a lot, but bear with me for one moment longer, and I can assure you--that this is the beginning of something very incredible.

MEANWHILE, the TARANTULA HAWK has dragged the paralyzed TARANTULA back to the entrance of its own burrow.

The TARANTULA HAWK shoves its helpless prey into the hole, and then crawls in after it.

The TARANTULA is not seen again.

Don't get me wrong, I think the new Transformers skins for Overwatch look fantastic! However, I will say that they picked the absolute safest and most basic Transformers for the collaboration!

Oh my God I LOVE these!! Reblogging instead of replying here so I don't run out of characters because these are absolutely brilliant (and startlingly accurate to my OCs, very well done on that front)

Okay. First. I CANNOT GET OVER the fact that you took the character named for the Greek representation of conflict and a character named for a Roman king-turned-myth... and literally made it a Pyrrhic victory holy shit. Like goddamn this ask did not require symbolism but here we are. That's going to be living rent-free in my head until the end of time thank you

Second, I really love how you consider all the characters abilities and disabilities, rather than just their superpowers alone. I mean like, Robin and Meredith being deaf, Liah being afraid of heights, Jasper having a fighting advantage from roller derby, AJ being startled by Dori's shapeshifting (which, she absolutely would be - there's no magic in her world so she's frozen in shock and Dori takes her down)

Also the ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER POSTER I CAN'T- that's fucking hilarious, and exactly something Katherine would do to buy her a few seconds of distraction.

I also really love that Kestrel and Reyna end up becoming friends rather than fighting, that was a delightful twist and even though Reyna may be a gremlin, I think Kestrel would find a study of their powers kind of fascinating (as long as it wasn't too invasive or painful).

Man... I think the Eris/Pyrrha fight has to be my favorite because of that symbolism, but every single one of these is absolutely brilliant! Cannot get over this, I'm smiling so much! Thank you for indulging my weird little ask

Your OCs and mine have just organized a group training session (for sparring, powers, magic, etc.). How does it go?

Okay so since you have WAY less OCs than I do, I'm going to try to pair the matches up as interestingly as possible.

Mira gets matched up against Liah, since both of them have advantages in that their bodies are better equipped than the average human. Mira probably ends up winning, despite the fact that Liah's over six feet tall and basically armored with scales, she's also a pacifist and wouldn't really be trying to incapacitate Mira. One easy way to defeat Liah would be for Mira to grab her and use her wings to lift Liah off the ground- she has a crippling fear of heights, so it'd completely incapacitate her, at least until she opens her eyes and stops hyperventilating, that is.

Rae gets paired with Antonio- despite her resistance to psychic attacks, Antonio ends up winning because EVERYONE underestimates him because he's a literal child. He wins by picking her up via telekinesis and pinning her to the ceiling until she can't hold up her shields anymore or she forfeits.

Robin gets paired with Arya, since they both have sound-based abilities. Robin at first has the upper hand, since she's deaf and therefore immune to Arya's siren abilities, but when Robin finally pins Arya to the ground, they set off a smoke bomb and shapeshift into a ox, ramming into Robin and sitting on her until she gives up.

Madison gets paired with Meredith, and while Meredith has a clear advantage as a speedster, she's also deaf, leaving her vulnerable to Madison camouflaging herself and jabbing her with the spines on her fins. Meredith will be fine, since she's basically immune to most poisons, she'll just be knocked out for a few minutes while her heightened metabolism takes care of the venom.

Ophelia gets matched with Marie, since they're both vaguely morally gray and have to rely on technology rather than any innate superpowers. It's a close match, with Octavia in the lead, until Marie manages to inject Borg nanotechnology into Ophelia's actuators, assimilating the technology. From there on out, it's a mental battle, with Ophelia battling Marie for control of her actuators and whoever has the stronger willpower would probably win.

Eris gets matched up with Pyrrha, and while Pyrrha at first has the upper hand because she's a traumatized cyborg who deals with teenage angst with a lightsaber, Eris, being a being who draws strength from conflict, probably can smell the inner conflict on that complete wet cat of a teenager, and they eventually manage to defeat her. However, because Pyrrha was raised in an environment where failiure meant severe punishment, she probably ends up having a panic attack and attempting to kill Eris. We'll see how that goes.

Nikoletta gets matched with Cassandra. I'm sorry, Nikoletta, but there's not a great chance for you against the strongest witch in her generation- unless, that is, she manages to shadow-travel fast enough that Cassandra can't get her, tuckering her out. However, Cassandra's definitely got the advantage due to her skills being more varied.

Indigo gets paired with Athena, who, despite not being Force Sensitive, is Chaotic Evil af and therefore not afraid to cheat or fight dirty. It's a toss-up to see who wins, since Athena was raised on the streets, so she's already quite scrappy, and she also majored in medical science, so she knows people's weak spots. However, Indigo has the Force.

AJ gets paired up with Dori, who, halfway through the fight, sneezes and accidentally takes the form of their 70-year-old grandma. Depending on how easily startled AJ is, Dori either manages to get AJ in a headlock, or Dori's getting their now 70-year-old ass beat.

Quinn gets matched with Matt, who quickly gets his ass absolutely handed to him because he has never been in a fight in his life. However, Matt manages to get a sedative out of his fanny pack, and sticks Quinn with it. Good night, Quinn.

Katherine gets paired up with Director Hawke. It's a pretty even match, considering that they're both fairly powerful magic users. However, Katherine pulls through when the magic of the tablet brings the poster of Arnold Schwarzenegger that's tacked to the wall in the corner of the gym to life, distracting Hawke long enough for Katherine to take her down.

Jasper gets matched with Ameerah, and they spend almost the whole fight staring at each other and trying to mess with each other's emotions. Eventually, Ameerah gives up and bitch slaps Jasper, and an actual fight breaks out. Jasper, being experienced with roller derby, which can sometimes get pretty brutal, manages to pin Ameerah to the ground, winning the fight.

Prometheus gets to fight Aldrich. Aldrich attempts to bite Prometheus in order to drain them, so they can be weakened, but soon realizes that hey, Prometheus isn't a human. In that moment of Aldrich's confusion, Prometheus manages to pin him, winning the match.

Kestrel gets matched up with Reyna. They end up becoming friends, after Kestrel shapeshifts in front of Reyna and she starts rambling about science and begging to study how their powers work. This is worse than any fight that could have ever happened, because Reyna is a complete gremlin and I don't doubt that Kestrel would get dragged into her mischief.

LORE: Eventually as the opposing Talonclan begins to rise, Watchclan begins to start recruiting more and more warriors to join, including loners Batfur, Swiftfrost, Sleekdance, and Hollyberry, former members of Rogue groups Hawkstripe and Sparrowstrike, as well as the two apprentices Bigpaw and Quickpaw. The clan had begun to thrive, working to protect the forest from vicious rogue groups, the enemy clan, and invading twolegs. It wasn't all great however. One night while Ravenshadow was leading a patrol to confront the Talonclan leader, Talonstar, an accident occurred, causing Ravenshadow to impulsively end up killing the enemy leader, causing relations to worsen with the enemy clan as well as harming the clan's overall reputation in the forest. Because of this, and many other stunts Ravenshadow had been pulling lately, such as being unnecessarily cruel to some kittypets (will elaborate on this later), Watchstar was forced to demote his long-time friend as deputy and replace him with Leopardfang. Watchstar and Ravenshadow had already begun to have some inner conflict, but this worsened their relationship even further.

Trump’s comments to right-wing media figure Tucker Carlson last night at an event in Glendale, Arizona, about former representative Liz Cheney (R-WY), coming as they have after the extraordinary racism and sexism of Trump’s Sunday event at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, have have highlighted the centrality of the campaign's attack on women. 

“She’s a radical war hawk,” Trump told Carlson, “Let’s put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her, OK? Let’s see how she feels about it, you know, when the guns are trained on her face.”  

Today, Trump surrogates have tried to say that he was referring to Cheney’s positions on American warfare, but it seems pretty clear he is fantasizing about seeing her in front of a firing squad. Journalist Magdi Jacobs noted the parallels between this statement and his 2020 command to the Proud Boys to “stand back and stand by,” the precursor to the Proud Boys’ attacking the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, to try to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. In both statements, Trump avoided explicitly calling for violence, but absolutely set the stage for it. 

This morning, Cheney responded to Trump’s threat “This is how dictators destroy free nations. They threaten those who speak against them with death. We cannot entrust our country and our freedom to a petty, vindictive, cruel, unstable man who wants to be a tyrant.”

While Trump began to attack Cheney openly when she accepted the role of vice-chair of the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol, where her presence clearly made Republicans—like Cassidy Hutchinson, aide to former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows—willing to share what they knew, Trump’s recent bloody fantasies appear to have broader meaning.

Cheney has emerged as the key figure to urge Republican women to vote against Trump, and it is becoming increasingly clear that Trump’s reelection is in trouble in part because white women are abandoning him. The early hints that this is happening, like the huge gender gap showing up in early voting, have sparked a right-wing frenzy of attempts to restore the power of white men over the women in their lives. Right-wing men are insisting that wives should vote as their husbands do, or that women should lose the ability to vote altogether. 

Trump’s suggestion that Cheney should face a firing squad seems to be a general expression of the anger of white men accustomed to dictating the terms of public life when faced with the reality that they can no longer count on being able to cow the people around them.

Trump’s attack on Cheney has galvanized his unpopularity with women, while the larger meaning of the MAGAs’ attacks on women got additional illustration with the news broken today by Lizzie Presser and Kavitha Surana of ProPublica that a pregnant 18-year-old in Texas suffering from sepsis was turned away from emergency rooms twice before doctors at a third visit required two ultrasounds to make sure her fetus no longer had a heartbeat before they would move her into intensive care. She died within hours.  

Today’s news continued to be bad for Trump. Last week, on the Joe Rogan podcast, Trump talked about the CHIPS and Science Act that authorized about $280 billion to encourage domestic research and manufacturing of semiconductors in the U.S. While the law has brought significant private investment into the construction of new manufacturing plants and has created manufacturing jobs, Trump complained to Rogan, “That chip deal is so bad.” 

After listening to that conversation, journalist Luke Radel asked House speaker Mike Johnson in a report aired today whether, with Trump opposed to the bill and with Republicans having voted against it, the Republicans will try to repeal the law if they get majorities in Congress. Johnson responded “I expect we probably will, but we haven’t developed that part of the agenda yet.”

Republicans are determined to cut government spending to make way for more tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations. But the CHIPS and Science Act has brought important supply chains home and has created more than 115,000 new high-paying jobs in the U.S. 

And it has brought significant investment to battleground states: $19.5 billion to Arizona, $75 million to Georgia, $325 million to Michigan, $750 million to North Carolina, and $93 million to Pennsylvania. Johnson quickly realized that acknowledging the Republicans’ hopes of repealing it was a bad mistake days before an election and, claiming he had not heard the question accurately, said he had no intent to undermine the CHIPS and Science Act. 

At a closed-door meeting earlier this week, Johnson said repealing the Affordable Care Act is a Republican priority. He tried to walk this comment back, as well, but Pennsylvania Republican senatorial candidate Dave McCormick kept the issue in front of voters when he was caught on a hot mic saying he wants to reform the ACA and that he opposes the provision in the ACA that allows children to stay on their parent’s health insurance until they’re 26.

Trump’s mental state continues to deteriorate, taking with it the former president’s inhibitions. After going on a rant about the people he blamed for troubles with his microphone at a sparsely attended rally in Warren, Michigan, the Republican nominee for president of the United States of America simulated oral sex on stage.

An official with the Harris campaign told reporters today that they “fully expect” Trump will replay the game plan of 2020 and claim victory on election night, before all the votes are fully counted. In an interview on Wednesday, Harris noted that they were ready if Trump prematurely declared victory: “We are sadly ready if he does and, if we know that he is actually manipulating the press and attempting to manipulate the consensus of the American people...we are prepared to respond,” she said. 

Washington State governor Jay Inslee has activated the state’s National Guard so it will be “fully prepared to respond to any…civil unrest” before or after the election. 

The Department of Justice today announced it would monitor the polls in 86 jurisdictions in 27 states to make sure they comply with federal voting rights laws. Although the federal government has monitored certain polls since 1965, officials in the states of Florida, Missouri, and Texas promptly announced they would not permit Department of Justice officials inside polling stations.

Meanwhile, Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris made two stops in Wisconsin today before packing the Wisconsin State Fair Exposition Center in West Allis near Milwaukee. 

In Madison, Harris told a reporter: “What I am enjoying about this moment most is that in spite of how my opponent spends full time trying to divide the American people, what I am seeing is people coming together under one roof who seemingly have nothing in common and know they have everything in common, and I think that is in the best interest of the strength of our nation.”
