#Cartoon monsoon

Back in 2003, Warner Bros released an anthology called Cartoon Monsoon which allowed young filmmakers to essentially make pilot episodes shown directly to audiences with the most popular ones promised to get their own full fledged show. You can read more about it here. Unfortunately, none of the shows pitched in the anthology got picked up.

One of the pilots pitched was Zatanna and in a weird way it feels like a precursor to Zatanna's later animated appearances. Not only does she have violet hair in this short like her DCSHG counterpart, she is also a teenager fighting Klarion much like her YJ counterpart albeit no Dr Fate involved. The show also gives her a brother named Damon whom AFAIK has never appeared anywhere else. Overall it has a strong 'Sabrina The Teenage Witch' vibe which I think fits really well for Zatanna. And it was written by Paul Dini (imagine that).

Zatanna was voiced by Tara Strong with Steve Blum voicing Zatara. No other DC characters save for the Zataras and Klarion appear in this.

September 18: Happy 37th Birthday to Actress and Reality Star Jinkx Monsoon, who provided the voices of the characters of both Lemongrab (replacing the character's original voice actor Justin Roiland) on Adventure Time (as of the Fionna and Cake series) and Emerald on Steven Universe from the Season 5 episode "Lars of the Stars" (2018); and portrayed as the antagonist Maestro from the Season 1 (Series 14) episode "The Devil's Chord" (2024) on Doctor Who.

E is for Emerald.

I haven't seen all Steven Universe episodes but I do like it quite a bit. It's a shame we never saw more of Emerald, because I love the design, voice, and the possible dynamics and plots we coulda had. But we never did. I suppose I'll leave that to comics, fan artists and fanfictions.

I'm not mad at anyone for this, just lamenting on what we never got to see. I based the color palette on the sketches I saw by Nicole Rodriguez, who worked on the show, which is a bit different in color palette as the Emerald we saw was on a screen, so her colors are greener than it probably actually was.

I've been wanting to draw my favourite Drag Artists for ages, so when I got a spot at Drag Expo AU Sydney and Melbourne I realised my time has come!⁠ Because she's a guest AND one of my absolute favourites of all time, I had to draw Jinkx Monsoon ...Aaaand the linework ended up sitting in my to do pile for ages because I was terrified of drawing an existing person rather than someone I made up. ⁠ But I decided to start the year facing my fears and finishing it off!
