Sylvia is a Fantastic character
Oh Sylvia!
Tumblr media
Ever since i wrote about Wander and why hes such an important character, i wanted to write about Sylvia. But life got in the way a little..
Sylvia is such an amazing character.
Craig could have easily made her male, or made her a "typical female character" who presents in hyperfeminine ways and whatever (nothing wrong with femininity as long as it isnt forced or compulsory). But she's not, shes her own character, she's masculine, she's a bounty hunter, she's strong, she's powerful, she keeps her silly friend in check, she's serious, logical, diligent. Competitive. She's sassy, she doesn't let others boss her around. Its SO refreshing. Its SO refreshing to just HAVE a female character that FEELS like a character rather than simply "the Female".
Funny how a kids show about space can do a better job at that than even Marvel movies, huh?Its almost sad that when talking about her, the fact that she's female and that shes written like a proper character is actually refreshing. It should be the case for ALL shows, no exceptions.
Maybe she can serve as an example for new writers and show runners what to do RIGHT.
Tumblr media
but enough about her gender!
I ADORE her dynamics between herself and other characters. I love the parallels between Her and Commander peepers in chasing around their emotional and impulsive friend/boss trying to keep them from doing silly things, yet also being complete opposites due to Her being the Bigger one in her dynamic with Wander, whereas peepers is the smaller one to Lord hater. I think its really cool!
I think episodes like "the Timebomb" or "the Family Reunion" are fantastic at deepening our understanding of Sylvia too.
She was brought up in a very rough and tough environment, feeling like she was never enough and had to compete with her older brothers at all times, fighting with feelings of not being good enough for her mother and how these feelings have caused her to be hyper competitive in instances of competition, where her feelings of little self worth are brough up if she's not "good enough", getting blinded by rage and loosing sense of what she should prioritise (which for a character that is typically so focused on logic and effectiveness is really striking. (I also ABSOLUTELY love the episode the Timebomb cause it shows how well Sylvia and Wander's friendship works?? Like the way he's able to calm her down and make sure she doesn't go crazy, similarly to how she's there for him from going crazy in episodes like "the Box") its just so sweet amd i love it smI love Sylvia so much.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When ppl say we want strong female characters WE MEAN SYLVIA!!! A WELL ROUNDED, AWESOME WELL WRITTEN CHARACTER THAT IS AN INSPIRATION!! THAT HAS FLAWS AND FEELINGS AND FEELS LIKE A REAL CHARACTER!!!! AHHH!!!! i love her :,3
Tumblr media
ALSO! her design! I love it! I didn't mention it yet. But i really like that
1. She's larger than Wander!
2. Her snout is so cute idk 🥺
3. I love that she's not skinny?? Like shes got muscle she's got fat, she's got speed!!?
4. I like that she has dinosaur and horse elements idk i think its cool She's just cool Idk i love her

Avatar: The Legend of Korra is one of the most profoundly unique animated series ever produced in America. No matter how you slice it, there is nothing else quite like it on the market. The sheer premise alone sounds utterly insane when you consider the sad state of animation over the past decade or so, and without the backing of its parent series (The Last Airbender), it's a pretty grim chance that a show like this would ever have come to exist on its own, at least not in the four-season big budget capacity that Korra fulfilled. And if streaming media continues to push in the bleak and often soulless direction it has been lately, I feel it's possible we may never see something quite like it again.
This is, without a doubt, the longest review I've ever written, because I have so many words to say. You can read the whole thing on my website (blatantly NSFW, 18+ only!) at the link below. There are no ads, no paywall or login required, and no comment sections, just my full unabashed thoughts, plain and simple.

I'd say let's agree to disagree, but insulting our intelligence/taste for liking it AND endorsing hatred to the fanbase is so uncalled for.
(I can respect your takes, even if I disagree with most of them, but why are you making it personal?)

Good Stuff: Bluey's The Sign
Tumblr media
Bluey is still great and I don't need to go into why again. What's most important is that even in such short time of knowing this cartoon, you can see the growth of it all. Joe and the crew share how the world of the Heeler family gets to learn, adapt, and grow without rapidly warping the status quo. You go through and see how everyone is able to work through rough and weird times with sincere maturity. Season 3's Finale is where this all comes to a head and it's as beautiful as I expected, MORESO.
Tumblr media
Brandi got to be happy would've been enough for me
The Sign deals with the idea of hard ideas. Those hard ideas that aren't inherently about change, but issues that when faced with initially, it feels like a bad ending. A bad ending which can't be easily fixed and you don't know where to go from there, and it hurts. It hurts when hard ideas swoop in, ruins your mood, festers your mind, and leaves you aimless. Bluey shows that it happens, this is the rare time where a ton of crap hits the fan in one day and it's not something Chili or Bandit or any adult can fix right away. I've never experienced this, but I felt the pain Bluey, Bingo, Frisky, and Chili went through where they're bargaining, burying, and avoiding confronting a potential reality they didn't want. This is where the real hero of the special comes in...
Tumblr media
Haven't said before, but Calypso is a masterful teacher
The parable of the farmer works as an incredible seedling thought for Bluey when she reveals her moving. It's not a story I ever heard, but known the message all too well. The message of not just accepting bad things that happen to you, but know that it'll never be the end of the world because of them. Don't think of it as deep, but a natural motif to grow with. This is where a debacle regarding the episode churns with me. It can seem like a cop-out that every character gets what they wanted by the end, as I said before the cartoon can be more idealistic than what our real life allows. Then again, the true beauty of Bluey I believe has always been if it's possible, the family will find a way and do it responsibly.
Tumblr media
If happiness can be achieved, they'll know how to get it
Beyond all this, the special is great. They waste no minute here in art and storytelling, and as said before, it's like Smash Bros Ultimate where everything is here. There are great callbacks to episodes you probably wouldn't have thought about, on top of getting to see the whole Heeler family on Chili and Bandit's sides like that blew my mind. Plus I love seeing weddings, dude, like I wish I was there with them. The feels are tsunami-ous like it's unfair to say this is the all-time best episode of the show, but darn if it wouldn't be earned.
Tumblr media
When else will I see the epicness of riding shotgun?
But to conclude, it's been said that after this the Ludo crew will take a indefinite hiatus from Bluey the series, especially when they have a new project underway. And honestly? I'm more than satisfied. The show could've ended here and I would've been somewhat at peace with them giving us this beautiful episode. I of course didn't get into this series since its beginning, but I came around the right time to enjoy it myself, to see others recognize its greatness, and to finally make it here. It's great to know this was only another chapter in the book, and I'll see to be around when it gets to come back. As for The Sign? What else is there to say?
Tumblr media
It was Beautiful. Cheers to the crew for everything.

Indie Saturday: HFJ ONE review
Heyo!
Perhaps i can ramble about Indie cartoons and comics every Saturday? (Or rather- any Saturday i remember)
I decided to start it with the fantastic show ONE, by Cheesyhfj. It is an Object show, but giving it a bit of a phycological thriller spin to it. Making it really unique in my eyes.
Now, in case you're unfamiliar with object shows: they are independently created animated webshows with object characters, that typically compete to achieve a prize, inspired by the one that started it all Bfdi (which was inspired by Total drama island!)
What makes ONE special is The mystery of it. Every episode becomes more insane and creepy than the last. Questions fill the mind without end. The artstyle is also unique, with desaturated colours which exentuate the eeriness of the show all in all. Over all, i HIGHLY recommend watching.
If you haven't watched the show, don't carry on reading. It's a show you best shouldn't get spoiled.

first season consisting of the contest on the plain and the second taking place "in the real world" is genius. Its truly really brilliant. As it keeps the story consistant yet simultaneously different all the time!
Sadly i feel a whole 3rd season is missing. I remember watching the last episode as it came out and thinking "wow that was a great episode! Cant wait to find out what happens next!" Just to be distraught at the fact that... That was the end! I could not have that. So many of my answers were left unanswered! As much as i adore the show and recommend anyone to watch it, that didn't feel like an end at all. Ive heard people call it an open end, but. I don't see it as such. An open end still answers at least half of the questions one has right?Does Liam make it out?? Does he find out how to save Amelia? And the rest of the gang? What was Stone's ordeal? How does he know all the answers? And why was he so so scared for liam before getting disqualified? Why DID Stone give Liam those papers that literally allowed the entire second season to happen? What was up with that? Why? Why was he so frightened? What were the other outcomes?? So many questions! And no answers!
To be fair, I havent watched the ONE Investigations videos that Cheesy has been uploading yet. Ill give my views when i do so! ;) Other than the abrupt ending though, I absolutely love this series. From the storytelling, to the characters and their designs, to the music and everything. Its really brilliant. Its a fantastic story. Theres something that meshes so well with the simplistic animation and the story being told. I love it.

You can argue all you like about how it shouldn't matter whether the characters are black or white, men or women, straight or gay, whatever, as long as the story's good. And while you are technically correct - it SHOULDN'T matter - we still live in a time where it's absurdly rare to see THESE type of characters in THESE roles. A black family who acts black in a space adventure is still an egregiously rare thing to behold. And because it's so rare, getting to see them live these characters, say these lines, act this way, and be the main characters of their own story, is still a radical and ground-breaking thing.
Just like it shouldn't matter whether you choose a Male or Female Shepard when you play Mass Effect, seeing a woman deliver those lines the way Fem-Shep does genuinely hits different than hearing it from a man, because of the long history of sexism in sci-fi. It's that much more meaningful coming from the type of person who regularly gets shut out of the genre for such an arbitrary reason as gender. And the same absolutely applies to race.
I can't fucking believe we've advanced some 60 years past Nichelle Nichols first appearing as a main character on Star Trek and we're STILL having this same conversation about how differently it hits and how radical it is to see black characters in primary roles. It shouldn't have to be that way. But it still is, and it should still be celebrated every time.
You can read the rest of this review over on my website here! No ads, no logins, no bullshit, ever!

Flow (dir. Gints Zilbalodis) x VIFF 2024.
Latvia's wordless animated fantasy follows a black cat escaping destruction alongside other animals on a raft after a flood and unseen disappearance of all human life. Rendered through what resembles PlayStation 2-era visual graphics technology, the intentionally less detailed or complex animation style only enhances the naturalistic journey of animal survival at sea. It's a deceptively simple film full of splendour and majesty.
Screening at the 2024 Vancouver International Film Festival as part of the Showcase series at SFU Woodward's on Oct. 5 and the Vancouver Playhouse (also VIFF Centre) on Oct. 6.
Also screening at the VIFF Centre from Nov. 29–Dec. 11.
