Song Review(s): Billy Strings - “Sharecropper’s Son” and “Turmoil & Tinfoil” (Live, Aug. 2, 2024)

The dichotomous nature of Billy Strings’ approach to bluegrass - traditional and anything but - was under the bright lights with the pairing of “Sharecropper’s Son” and “Turmoil & Tinfoil.”

The Carter Stanley cover and the Strings original opened the latter’s Aug. 2 performance in Pennsylvania and represent the giveaway portion of the associated pay-per-view webcast.

Such a juxtaposition is like jumping from the 1940s to the 2200s as guitar, mandolin, bass, banjo and fiddle transport themselves from from a southern-U.S. barnyard to the deepest reaches of outer space in the span of a quarter-hour.

As is pretty much forever the case with Strings and his crew, the playing and singing are flawless on both pieces of music. Differences of opinion might surface, however, between those who prefer either feet-on-the-ground or head-in-the-sky listening experiences.

Part of the adventure of listening to a playlist consisting of a variety of genres on shuffle is that you sometimes got from straight from The Stanley Brothers' 'Angel Band' to 'Hooked On A Feeling' by Blue Suede and you just have to accept that as it happens.
