European airlines urge EU to push for more green fuel
Several leading European airlines urged EU authorities to follow the US lead and push for increased green fuel production on Wednesday, according to Euractiv.
The European Union passed a law requiring airlines to start phasing in sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) on routes departing from EU airports last year as part of the fight against climate change. SAF is expected to account for 2 per cent of the total fuel mix from next year, 6 per cent in 2030, before rising sharply to 70 per cent from 2050.
Airlines for Europe (A4E) stated that SAF production in Europe was lagging behind projects launched in the US and supported by Washington’s sweeping Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) plan. Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr claimed:
In the US, the SAF production is highly incentivised. We need those solutions here in Europe.

Surviving The 2022 Travel Chaos
This summer the usual logic does not apply. Here’s how to handle the madness.
Late June, the Lufthansa Group Executive Board wrote a letter to its customers asking for understanding regarding the current chaos in aviation. CEO Carsten Spohr et al. apologized for the inconvenience of delays and cancellations, adding that the situation is unlikely to improve in the short term.
In 2023 the Lufthansa Group expects to have a much more reliable air transport system worldwide. We truly hope so. And until then The Sunday Coffee Club is here to help with this 8-Step guide to surviving this years travel chaos.
1. Be neurotically early
There was a time when you would arrive an hour before your flight and you’d still have enough time to browse through Duty Free, get a snack and read the papers. Back then Berliners had their beloved Tegel Airport, close to the city and easy to navigate. Sadly that’s in the past.
Now, with the BER being the only (!) (functioning) airport for a city of 3.6 million, one can imagine the chaos even without war in Ukraine, pandemic aftermath, staff shortage etc. It was bad from the get go. But don’t get me started on our airport.
Let’s face the truth here: You have to get to the airport earlier than you ever normally would - and check in online whenever possible. Traveling overseas? Try 3 hours earlier. If you can, now would be the moment to upgrade. Let your saved miles/points help you get in the lounge instead of reenacting The Terminal on a metal bench.
2. Keep luggage to a minimum
Whenever you think it’s doable: Go carry-on only. That moment when the belt stops and your bag hasn’t showed up: It’s a mood killer and you don’t want that on your first day of that much needed vacation. Sadly, with the general situation of airports right now, chances of suitcases disappearing are at an all-time high.
Maybe it’s time to invest into a high-quality carry-on. The Sunday Coffee Club looooves floyd.one, so look no further. In case you’re bringing a bag to check, throw an AirTag in there, it’s good for extra precaution, especially when you’re carrying valuables.
3. Use any delay to clear your inbox
After you’ve made it through security the waiting game begins. My routine: I browse through the perfume section (of course) at Duty Free before I get the papers and a bottle of water. Then I look for a well-lit spot with my gate in sight.
Once I’m seated I try to clear my inbox from any unread mails and newsletters. I hate to begin my vacation knowing there are unread mails, messages and unchecked Safari bookmarks that want my attention.
Get a coffee, and tie up any loose ends before wheels up. Any other day, zero inbox may be a dream. Now is the time to get it.
4. Choose your reading material wisely
It does not matter if you prefer Kindle, iPad, an actual printed book, magazines and newspapers: As long as it distracts you from a crowded airport coffee shop, it’s worth bringing. I’m team printed books, but I would argue that a Kindle or an iPad go a long way when traveling.
Whatever you bring, don’t overdo it. Although we think we might have the time to read three books in one week, chances are high you will not even finish one book. But that’s fine. Don’t stress yourself.
5. Do your homework
If you’re someone who’s always had a more laissez-faire approach to holiday planning, a travel delay gives you a second chance to do some pre-trip research.
As stated above: team print - which is why I love Wallpaper’s compact guides. They look nice, fit in every pouch or tote bag and offer a good overview of activities, sights, places to go and more. Get them at phaidon.com.
Please, for the love of God, you’re never going to become fluent in Italian via Duolingo, but you might learn how to say hello, goodbye and “more gelato, please” in the hour or so you’re waiting for your flight.
6. Make a well-considered investment or two
Impusle Duty Free purchases can be a mistake. But, if the duty-free iteam is cheaper then its equivalent at home, maybe it is time you cop the Persol sunglasses or the Bottega handbag that has been sitting on top of your wishlist.
Google a little bit. Then, take full advantage. Nothing beats a good shopping-induced dopamine rush before boarding opens.
7. Put your Netflix subscription to good use
In-flight entertainment is my go-to time killer on a long flight. If it’s mediocre, that’s a problem. Which is why I download some Netflix shows and films and I urge you to do the same.
Not sure what to watch? Start with any travel or food docuseries relevant to your holiday. It’s a great way to learn a little bit about culture, food and people. Not your cup of tea? Give Podcasts a try, either for information, learning, following the news or just to make you fall asleep easier. Whatever it is, download it, because you don’t want to rely on in-flight WiFi or an unstable WiFi connection at the gate.
8. Read the fine print – then read it again
Talk to friends and family regarding travel insurance, in chaotic times like these, it might be good idea to find a trusted company/partner that helps you out in case anything goes south. Then: Read every detail of the policy and make sure you understand it all. Not all insurances cover the same travel related disruptions. Having to pay for a hotel after a cancelled flight makes a shitty situation even shittier.

Lufthansa needs “half of Germany’s electricity” to run its entire fleet on green fuels
The air transport giant will have to consume half of the electricity produced in Germany to keep all aircraft running on green fuel.
Carsten Spohr, the group’s CEO, told a national aviation conference in Hamburg that Lufthansa, which has the largest fleet in Europe, “will need about half of Germany’s electricity to convert it into synthetic fuel.”
But both economics minister Robert Habeck and Federal Network Agency, which regulates Germany’s electricity, won’t give me that amount of energy.
