The Tapestry
Purple. The bruises on your hips from that night, the wine-stained dress on your floor. You haven’t bothered to pick it up yet, not when touching it feels like an iron, not when he had no problem picking it off you as you cried. You turn in a mirror, searching for the skin he never touched – which is hard, given the way his hands traversed your entire being, uncharted territory under his…

US National Championships Review
Men:
Ilia Manlinin: Total Score 333.31 - 1st in the short, 1st in the free. My heart stopped after the fall on the 4Lo. It looked really rough and I think it really shook him up. I was praying that he wasn’t going to do the backflip but of course he did and he almost smashed his face into the ice. I really don’t like the 7 quad program but he likes doing it so I guess he’s gonna keep doing it. I don’t think he’ll be able to keep it up forever tho.
Andrew Torgashev: Total Score 286.49 - 2nd in the short, 2nd in the free. My man smiled and nodded to the judges during the free because he knew he was going to Worlds lol. Pizza King is having the season of a lifetime and I love seeing his confidence. I just hope he can keep the good momentum going but I’m not too worried about him tbh.
Camden Pulkinen: Total Score 252.92 - 4th in the short, 4th in the free. I did not have high hopes for Camden going into this completion because his Grand Prixs were both very bad. His short program was amazing. My eyes were misty and my heart was soaring. I’m so glad he also delivered a clean free. I am staying cautiously optimistic about 4 Continents because Camden usually skates well at nationals but then he’ll fall a part at his next assignment.
Maxim Naumov: Total Score 248.16 - 7th in the short, 3rd in the free. In think this is his 3rd year in a row getting 4th at nationals. But if you’re gonna keep getting 4th at nationals it’s good to be a US nationals because at least you get the pewter. The 4S was not working for him this competition which is a shame, but I’m glad that he didn’t let the problems with the 4S mess up the rest of his programs.
Jimmy Ma: Total Score 236.78 - 3rd in the short, 7th in the free. He was fabulous in the short but it’s so frustrating that he can’t do two clean programs at competition. He was out there looking like Nathan in the free tho. I’m glad he was able to get the 4T2T after the 2T, but he couldn’t keep it together in the second half of the program. I love watching him perform.
Tomoki Hiwatashi: Total Score 229.53 - 10th in the short, 5th in the free. He is so entertaining and I am absolutely obsessed with his free. I think it fits him so well. So sad about the 4T in the short. He really needed some chapstick.
Women:
Amber Glenn: Total Score 216.79 - 3rd in the short, 1st in the free. I think the nerves really got to Amber here, especially in the free, but I’m glad she got her back to back titles. The 3A in the free was stunning. Unfortunately nether one of Amber’s programs really stand out to me so we’re gonna need some better music for the Olympic season please and thank you.
Alysa Liu: Total Score 215.33 - 1st in the short, 2nd in the free. That damn spin. I really thought she had it and if she had won I would’ve been over the moon. Seeing her happy just makes me so happy. Her short was probably my favorite performance of the season. I was crying fat tears. She is an icon and she is going to worlds!!!
Sarah Everhardt: Total Score 207.36 - 4th in the short, 3rd in the free. Needs to replace the 3T3T in the short or at least do it in the second half of the program. Both of her programs really clicked with me at this competition, because I was not really feeling either of them. So excited to see her at Four Continents and just like Amber said she needs to train like she’s going to Worlds because who knows what is going to happen with Isababy.
Brandie Tennell: Total Score 199.94 - 2nd in the short, 4th in the free. Slayed the short program. Second half of the free kinda fell apart but it’s still very pretty.
Sherry Zhang: Total Score 188.48 - 5th in the short, 7th in the free. It was her senior debut and she lowkey killed it. Short was great. I liked the Hunger Games free, and I loved the bow and arrow movement at the beginning. First half was great but she couldn’t keep it together. But she did fight to the end.
Starr Andrews: Total Score 185.97 - 12th in the short, 5th in the free. I love Starr so much. I’m glad she had a good comeback in the free. It was a bummer not seeing her at a Grand Prix this season but she just doesn’t have the consistency.
Pairs:
Alisa Efimova / Misha Mitrofanov: Total Score 211.9 - 3rd in the short, 1st in the free. This pairs event was crazy. They have really good speed and were giving great attitude in the short. In the free they landed all the SBS jumps and the throws. Not much more you could ask for.
Katie McBeath / Daniel Parkman: Total Score 190.57 - 4th in the short, 2nd in the free. I don’t really vibe with either one of their programs tbh. Biggest mistakes was the SBS 3F in the free, but the throw 3Lo was great!
Ellie Kam / Danny O’Shea: Total Score 189.57 - 1st in the short, 5th in the free. Short was excellent but the free was my goodness the free was scary. I’m just glad they’re both okay after that fall. Danny is a great partner because he really took the brunt of the fall. I hope they are able to move past this performance.
Ice Dance:
Madison Chock / Evan Bates: Total Score 223.52 - 1st in the rhythm, 1st in the free. Maddy was really not looking good after the free. I have no idea how she went out there and performed the way she did. She is a warrior. Rhythm was pretty solid but the free was not their best.
Christina Carreira / Anthony Ponomarkenko: Total Score 210.79 - 2nd in the rhythm, 2nd int he free. I am so, so happy that he got a new costume for the free but I’m upset that she also changed her costume because I really liked the yellow! Rhythm is pretty solid, but the free was amazing. I love it so much. Glad they got some transfer proof lipstick lol.
Caroline Green / Michael Parsons: Total Score 205.37 - 4th in the short, 3rd in the free. I lost my tech box during their free which was rough because I don’t know enough about ice dance yet to not have a tech box. I don’t really know what the story of their free program is but I could tell that they were telling a story (lol idk if that made any sense) and it was very pretty.
The score inflation that was going on here was insane but I hope everybody got a big confidence boost from these big scores. I am not going to be able to get a Europeans preview out because it starts tomorrow and once I get this posted it will be my bedtime but I will be writing a review! Ngl I am looking forward to a break after Europeans because Canadian Nationals, US Nationals and Europeans all back to back has been a lot.

Best Reads of 2024
this year i read 300 books. which i think is impressive but not as impressive as it sounds bc many of these books were very short, easy reads meant to be like, stuff you read at the airport or sitting by the pool on vacation. so it's not like i was tackling the harvard classics. i also read extremely fast; it only takes me about an hour to do 300 pages unless it's a super dense complex text. that said, here is a list of all the books i read this year that i would rate 4 stars or higher, separated by genre: Fantasy/Magical Realism: The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett Highfire by Eoin Colfer Tehanu by Ursula K. argo2nauts music headcannons because this is too much
the misinformation some of you guys have spread regarding their music taste is insane/hj
(p.s: this is my take on this, if you disagree it’s alright!! it’s just fun and games :D)
(ps2: if any artist/band i mention is problematic please lmk!!)
percy - perseus jackson is a pretty intimidating skater kid with a resting bitch face who is covered head to toe in scars and has his ears pierced. where did the ‘high school musical/disney sitcom’ percy allegations come from. he likes led zeppelin (he canonically has a t shirt in toa if i can remember!!), childish gambino, d4vd, late night drive home, deftones, arctic monkeys, and chase atlantic.
fav song -
annabeth: this is a bit harder.. i think her music taste is either extremely varied or only listens to one album on repeat until her ears bleed. for my sanity i’m going with the former. i think she’d cry over boygenius and mitski (for obvious reasons) and i think she’d like sombr and famous 70/80s guys like queen, david bowie, ac/dc, the smiths ofc. and such. also mac demarco and phoebe bridgers!!!!”!?
fav song -
grover underwood - ADRIANNE LENKER!!!!!: THERE IS NOT A DOUBT IN MY MIND ABOUT IT. all of her songs suit him in one way or another. he needs to be seen more i love him to death. underrated man fr. also late night drive home, beach house, dream ivory, the smiths, queen, cas, WAVE TO EARTH!!!!!
fav song -
i know what youre thinking. “mali, will you ever shut up about this song?” answer is no. i will not.
piper mclean - CHAPPELL ROAN CHAPPELL ROAN IS HERRSSSS??? CASUAL? GOOD LUCK BABE???? HERS!!!! honorable mention: girl in red because don’t forget your roots. also madds buckley MAYBE? idk. also probably cas 🤷♀️
fav song -
nico - oh my beloved. he’d definitely listen to italian music when he misses bianca/maria but idk any italian artists so… for now we’re going with english music. and also very specific turkish song: m. by anil emre daldal because will. i’m thinking mitski, roar, mac demarco, OBVIOUSLY SUFJAN STEVENS??? cults, alex g, grimes, also very specifically: cupid by jack stauber? MAYBE conan gray… idk. and also definitely nirvana and guns n roses
fav song -
i heard this song while thinking of him and my heart SHATTERED guys do not make the same mistake i did.
hazel - i?? don’t know? really uhh… probably gracie abrams or adrianne lenker? phoebe bridgers, beach house?? soft rythm/music, deep/depressing lyrics. maybe tnbh but DEFINITELY current joys and adrianne lenker
(yes i made these first songs a rainbow on purpose (not rlly..) shut up i thought it’d be funny)
also this is her favorite song because it reminds her of nico and maybe marie, specifically the first lines!! (marceline [nico], is it just you and me in the wreckage of the world?)
frank zhang - MAC DEMARCO!! BEACH HOUSE!! TV GIRL!! CONAN GRAY!! MONTAN FISH!! GANG OF YOUTHS!! also his grandmother liked to listen to songs in mandarin and he likes remembering her so he constantly listens to 茉莉花 (Mòlìhuā) and uhh if you have any other old mandarin songs lmk :D!! and honorable mention: it almost worked by tv girl
fav song -
because it was his mother’s favorite song
jason grace - this is difficult.. like very. i don’t think he’d listen to music very much and it’s getting hard to not keep repeating artists. rmcm maybe? laufey, probably.. he listens to pretty much everything his friends to. he’s very flexible when it comes to music :)
fav song -
will solace - controversial maybe but i don’t think he’d like taylor swift very much.. no problem with her but i’d just like to see more variety in will’s music taste hcs. i think he’d love mac demarco (he’s been mentioned lke 8 times by now but he really is will’s favorite artist), tv girl, beach weather, the smiths, chappell roan, current joys, vacations, lemon demon, sufjan stevens, boygenius. conan gray, specifically summer child because it was written for him (i would know conan told me), and obviously the entirety of the mamma mia soundtrack. because it’s will.
fav song -
from the same album as nico because symbolism and that entire song is for them and tyem only (and also achicleos)
leo valdez - MY BELOVED!! very specifically the spanish part in stress relief (si puedes venir conmigo, amor, yo te enseño todo lo que hay. pq me tratas asi?? como no soy nadie ITS VALGRACE GUYS!!) uhh also chappell roan.. and your best american girl by mitski. and the smiths and queen and pavement. and lemon demon, the strokes, the cure.. maybe nirvana? and the front bottoms
fav song -
ok thats it im lagging so hard bye

Ok, I'm not sure when my media obsessions are going to align this well again thematically speaking, but I have recently concurrently been experiencing:
manga/anime: Dungeon Meshi
show: Hannibal
music album: 'An Awesome Wave' by Alt-J
book(fiction): 'Land of Milk and Honey' by C. Pam Zhang
Next you'll be telling me that my next nonfiction reading material will be 'Holy Feast and Holy Fast' by Caroline Walker-Bynum (JK... unless? 🤔).
But I guess I'm exploring the connections between physical consumption and love/sex?
I mean, it was once mentioned to me that lust could be seen as merely a modification of hunger? So... There's that? I don't know where I'm going with that. I'm tired and I reserve the right to reblog with additions later.

bio: the trevelyans, despite originating from antiva, are one of the most prominent noble families of ostwick. because of their strong ties to the chantry, the family does not hesitate to send their children to the circle when they discover the gift of magic. luca felt betrayed when he was sent away at just 12 years old and left on bad terms with his mother, who he was extremely close with. growing up with his father's strong disdain for magic and fearmongering from the templars caused luca to develop a fear of his own magical abilities. luca's mother passes away from illness before luca has a chance to reconcile, intensifying the guilt, fear, and nightmares he already suffered with. before he was even considered to do his harrowing, he begs the templars to make him tranquil so he won't be a threat to anybody, and won't have to further deal with his pain. when kirkwall's circle rebelled, ostwick quickly followed suit, and luca was forced to join the rebels for his own survival. he eventually joins the senior enchanters at the divine conclave as an unbiased voice. when the anchor is accidentally fused with luca's hand, his severed connection with the fade was restored, curing him of his tranquility. after being tranquil for a decade, luca must relearn how to live, how to feel, and how to be a leader, as he's thrust into reverence as the only hope to save thedas.

New Releases Week of July 17, 2023
What a week! There are so many books to get excited about this Tuesday.
Just a Hat by Shanah Khubiar Blackstone Publishing
It’s 1979, and thirteen-year-old Joseph Nissan can’t help but notice that small-town Texas has something in common with Revolution-era Iran: an absence of fellow Jews. And in such a small town it seems obvious that a brown kid like him was bound to make friends with Latinos–which is a plus, since his new buds, the Ybarra twins, have his back. But when the Iran hostage crisis, two neighborhood bullies, and the local reverend’s beautiful daughter put him in all sorts of danger, Joseph must find new ways to cope at home and at school.
As he struggles to trust others and stay true to himself, a fiercely guarded family secret keeps his father at a distance, and even his piano teacher, Miss Eleanor–who is like a grandmother to him–can’t always protect him. But Joseph is not alone, and with a little help from his friends he finds the courage to confront his fears and discovers he can inspire others to find their courage, too.
Firebird by Sunmi HarperCollins
Caroline Kim is feeling the weight of sophomore year. When she starts tutoring infamous senior Kimberly Park-Ocampo–a charismatic lesbian, friend to rich kids and punks alike–Caroline is flustered . . . but intrigued
Their friendship kindles and before they know it, the two are sneaking out for late-night drives, bonding beneath the stars over music, dreams, and a shared desire of getting away from it all.
A connection begins to smolder . . . but will feelings of guilt and the mounting pressure of life outside of these adventures extinguish their spark before it catches fire?
I’m Not Here to Make Friends by Andrew Yang
Terrace House meets Loveboat, Taipei in this fun, frothy, incisive YA debut, following two teens and their unforgettable summer on a reality show.
When Sabine Zhang is picked for Hotel California, a teen reality show with an all-Asian cast, she jumps at the opportunity. As one of few Asians at her high school in the Midwest, she’s always felt as if she was playing a side character in someone else’s story. But on this show, she’ll finally have a chance to step into the spotlight.
All Yoona Bae wants is to get away. The girls at church think she’s mean, her mom thinks she’s a troublemaker, and she’s tired of fighting against her unearned bad reputation. So when she’s invited to appear on Hotel California, Yoona sees it as an opportunity to chill out, make some friends, maybe even get a tan.
But life on the show isn’t all sunshine and self-actualization. The producers want drama at all costs, even if it means pitting Sabine and Yoona against each other. With the season finale looming, can the girls figure out a peaceful way forward, before they lose control of their own narratives?
Frontera by Julio Anta, Jacoby Salcedo (Illustrator)
Mateo makes the dangerous journey back home to the United States through the Sonoran Desert with the help of a new friend, a ghost named Guillermo in a supernatural borderland odyssey by debut graphic novelists Julio Anta and Jacoby Salcedo. As long as he remembers to stay smart and keep his eyes open, Mateo knows that he can survive the trek across the Sonoran Desert that will take him from Mexico to the United States.
That is until he’s caught by the Border Patrol only moments after sneaking across the fence in the dead of night. Escaping their clutches comes at a price and, lost in the desert without a guide or water, Mateo is ill-prepared for the unforgiving heat that is sure to arrive come sunrise. With the odds stacked against him, his one chance at survival may be putting his trust in something, or rather someone, that he isn’t even sure exists. If you’d asked him if ghosts were real before he found himself face-to-face with one, Mateo wouldn’t have even considered it.
But now, confronted with the nearly undeniable presence of Guillermo, he’s having second thoughts. Having spent his afterlife guiding migrants to safety, Guillermo knows things about the Sonoran Desert far beyond what could be explained by a mere hallucination. But even as Mateo forms an uneasy partnership with Guillermo, survival is still uncertain. The Sonoran Desert, with its hostile temperatures and inhabitants, is teeming with danger as the Border Patrol and rogue militias prowl its deadly terrain. As his journey stretches on, Mateo will have to decide exactly what and who he’s willing to sacrifice to find home.
A Guide to the Dark by Meriam Metoui Henry Holt
You can check out of Room 9, but you can never leave.
The Haunting of Hill House meets Nina LaCour in this paranormal mystery YA about the ghosts we carry with us.
Something is building, simmering just out of reach.
The room is watching. But Mira and Layla don’t know this yet. When the two best friends are stranded on their spring break college tour road trip, they find themselves at the Wildwood Motel, located in the middle of nowhere, Indiana. Mira can’t shake the feeling that there is something wrong and rotten about their room. Inside, she’s haunted by nightmares of her dead brother. When she wakes up, he’s still there.
Layla doesn’t see him. Or notice anything suspicious about Room 9. The place may be a little run down, but it has a certain charm she can’t wait to capture on camera. If Layla is being honest, she’s too preoccupied with confusing feelings for Mira to see much else. But when they learn eight people died in that same room, they realize there must be a connection between the deaths and the unexplainable things that keep happening inside it. They just have to find the connection before Mira becomes the ninth.
Under This Forgetful Sky by Lauren Yero
In the spirit of Paolo Bacigalupi and Laini Taylor, this futuristic star-crossed love story follows two teens in a starkly unequal world struggling to find their place.
Sixteen-year-old Rumi Sabzwari has spent his entire life behind the armored walls of St. Iago, which protect citizens of the Union of Upper Cities from the outside world’s environmental devastation. But when rebels infect his father with a fatal virus, Rumi escapes St. Iago, desperate to find a cure.
In the ruined city of Paraíso, Rumi meets fifteen-year-old Paz, who agrees to guide him on his journey. As they travel together, Rumi finds himself drawn to Paz—and behind her tough exterior, she begins to feel the same way. But Paz knows more about Rumi’s father’s illness than she’s saying and has her own agenda. With the powerful forces at play in their cities putting them at odds, can the two learn to trust in each other—enough to imagine a different world?
Clementine and Danny Save the World by Livia Blackburne
You’ve Got Mail gets a YA twist in this rom-com that spotlights the power of activism and community organizing in the face of gentrification.
Clementine Chan believes in the power of the written word. Under the pseudonym Hibiscus, she runs a popular blog reviewing tea shops and discussing larger issues within her Chinatown community. She has a loyal, kind following, save for this one sour grape named BobaBoy888.
Danny Mok is allergic to change, and the gentrification seeping into Chinatown breaks his heart. He channels his frustration into his internet alter ego, BobaBoy888, bickering with local blogger Hibiscus over all things Chinatown and tea.
When a major corporation reveals plans that threaten to shut down the Mok’s beloved tea shop, Clementine and Danny find themselves working together in real life to save this community they both love. But as they fall hard for this cause—and each other—they have no clue that their online personas have been fighting for years.
When the truth comes to light, can Danny and Clementine still find their happily-ever-after?

The Legacy of Yangchen (The Yangchen Novels #2) by F.C. Lee Amulet Books
Avatar Yangchen has succeeded in bringing a measure of stability to Bin-Er, but her successes have been limited to a single city, and rumors concerning Unanimity—a weapon capable of total obliteration—have led to increasing tensions among the Four Nations.
Desperate to restore diplomacy, Yangchen attempts to de-escalate hostilities between heads of state. But in the wake of a brutal assassination and the freeing of Unanimity, Yangchen is forced to bring Kavik—the trusted former companion whose betrayal crushed her—back into her fold.
As the Four Nations teeter on the brink of conflict and she begins to unravel the power-hungry Zongdu Chaisee’s true agenda, Yangchen is forced to measure the worth of humanity, and how much can be sacrificed in the name of balance.
This taut and provocative fourth installment in the Chronicles of the Avatar series follows Avatar Yangchen as she charts the course of her legacy, finally making peace with her choices and facing Avatarhood with the courage it demands.
