Various editions of the Chandler short stories collection Trouble is My Business.

The bibliography of Chandler (and Hammett) short stories collections is quite convoluted. Penguin UK was the first publisher to use that title for a collection in 1950 (top pic, Chandler's file copy via eBay). That collection contained five stories ("Trouble is My Business", "Red Wind", "I'll Be Waiting", "Guns at Cyrano's"). Other editions have a different line-up (no "Guns at Cyrano's", "Ill Be Waiting" replaced by "Finger Man").

When first published in Black Mask and Dime Detective in the 1930s, these stories featured Marlowe precursors John Dalmas and Carmady, but their names were changed to Chandler's most famous character.

This 1960s Penguin edition still used the name John Dalmas.

I love how Penguin used Bogart for their 1970s Chandler set, and switched to Mitchum for the 1985 reprint. Haven't been able to find a better pic, sorry.

The Folio Society also used that title for its two-volume set of Chandler's short stories, along with Blacklailers Don't Shot:

Beat

Eleanor presses her forehead against his and they both close their eyes, Hector a beat after she does. It's something they've done countless times. "Nothing lasts forever, not the good or the bad. We just have to hold out a little longer." "Just a little longer," Hector murmurs. "And then we can be a proper family again. We'll get to pick out a school for Miranda and watch her make friends. We can invite your parents over for Christmas." "You just want their pies," Hector says. Eleanor smiles. "That too." "Maybe we should get a dog." "That's the best idea I've heard all day." There is movement from upstairs and I alert them through the speakers in the walls. "Miranda is awake," I say. "She'll be hungry," Hector says. "I have cookies in my suitcase." Eleanor snorts and pulls away from him. "She's getting a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. The cookies are for after dinner. Come on, she's missed you. Everyday it's 'When's daddy coming home?'" Hector grins. "Then I'll just go upstairs and tell her the answer's today." It's a race between them to see who mounts the stairs faster. Hector wins and when Miranda sees him at the threshold of her room, she squeals and rushes on short legs to him. He kneels down and catches her in a hug while Eleanor looks on, smiling. For one moment, it's like the world is normal.

Cheat

"Rhys Valencya, what do you think you're doing?" Carmady asked in the tone of voice she used when Rhys was little and had been caught cheating on a test. The voice was enough to freeze Rhys and make her feel small and weak again and ashamed. Carmady took a slow step forward. "I trusted you, Rhys. I vouched for you. And this is how you repay that trust? By betraying your family?" "You killed my dad," Rhys said, the words getting caught in her throat so that the last syllable came out as a whisper. She swallowed. "If anyone's betrayed this family, it's you."

Fleet

The pod unlatched with a hiss and the lid rolled back. In those fleeting seconds, Rhys had time to imagine that the Church had hid the lich's body down here all these years and that she'd been tricked. That she would find herself face to face with a creature out of every San Frascan's nightmare. Then the lid retracted and what Rhys was looking at wasn't any horrible undead monster. It was a man. He didn't look dead at all, but he didn't look alive either. The pod had probably held him in stasis. He was light-skinned, with perfectly groomed brown hair, and he wore simple black and white garb. "Shit, it is a medical pod," Rhys whispered. How long had this been down here? How long had her family just kept some random guy in their basement? Lights flickered on inside the pod, activating...something. Rhys knew she should run, that whoever this was wasn't her business, but she couldn't stop staring. "Who are you?" As if he had heard her, the man's eyes opened.

Neat

The crypt always gave Rhys the shivers so she did everything in her power to avoid coming down here, even pretending to be sick once so she didn't have to help carry a body. Coffin shelves stood in neat rows, each nook home to the decaying dead. Bones upon bones were laid here, all around her. She could imagine them still conscious, just lying there in the dark with their sunken eye sockets and rotting teeth and long, bony fingers, just waiting for the lich to give the command: rise. She shuddered and wrapped her arms around herself. There was no climate control down here so it was cold and moist and smelled like sweet decay. Generations of Valencyas were buried down here along with all the hapless dead of the city, people everyone thought had been cremated. If San Frasca knew Carmady had kept all their corpses down here, they'd be furious. Any dead remains could be used by the Lich in his army. The only way to ensure that didn't happen was to completely destroy the remains so nothing but ash and the tiniest bone shards remained. Someday, Rhys too would end up down here, just another unwitting soldier waiting to serve.

Hey... curious why you think cage is no longer in Macgyver?? I think she’s still around. Even if she wasn’t.... her ending was rushed as heck. And not even a goodbye scene with the crew? I find that hard to believe haha. I think she’s gonna return for the finale with a clue about macs dad or smthing :) idek... I just find it hard to believe/stupid that the creators would bring in a new character just to get rid of it that same season.

As I said, she might be back in a recurring capacity but it seems she’s no longer a regular since she’s not listed in the opening credits - IIRC, regulars are always listed in the OP, even if they do not physically appear in the ep, it’s a contractual thing, they get paid whether they’re in it or not. I do think she’ll be back, at some point, but she’s definitely not in the next four eps. Which is a bummer because I really, really liked her, both the character and the actress :( I tried to tweet to the execs, Peter Lenkov and Craig O’Neill, and ask them about Isabel, we’ll see if they actually answer.

Mr Carmady is an absolute legend, Sam is soooo sweetly in character, there's a perfect balance of fluff and angst, the smut is real (not perfect fanfic sex if that makes sense), it's just all super fucking cute😜It's just perfection. The great Raymond Chandler, official hardboiled writer of Cladrite Radio, was born 132 years ago today in Chicago, Illinois.

Chandler wrote about a few other shamuses—with names like Carmady, Dalmas and Mallory—before he came up with Philip Marlowe, but they were not so different from his most famous creation. In fact, when some of his early short stories were later collected in a volume called The Simple Art of Murder, Chandler up and changed their names to Philip Marlowe. So it's clear he had roughly the same protagonist in mind all along—he just hadn't yet settled on the right name for him.

To mark the occasion, we share this memorable opening paragraph from his classic 1938 short story Red Wind:

There was a desert wind blowing that night. It was one of those hot dry Santa Anas that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch. On nights like that every booze party ends in a fight. Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands’ necks. Anything can happen. You can even get a full glass of beer at a cocktail lounge.

being so loud and unapologetic about opinions, crimson often finds herself in the middle of drama on twitter, instagram, snapchat, reddit, facebook, quara, yahoo. wherever it is, she will be a part of it.

she was pampered and spoiled by her parents since she’s an only child .

she knew michael at a young age and dated him throughout high school, hence him being her first love™ .

 it came as a huge shock when he broke up with her at the beginning of her freshman year at du point. such a shock that she went to extreme measures to try and win him back. posting on social media, texting him like crazy, crimson cooper became completely pathetic and she didn’t care .

she doesn’t really like talking about michael and chooses to opt out of conversations that bring him up .

very well known for airing all her drama out on social media for everyone to see .

has little to no motivation in school and is simply doing it to please her traditional parents and to keep up with appearances .

a part from that she’s friendly, kind natured and is dying to graduate du point so she could do what her heart truly desires, live on a beach with a bunch of animals while helping others for a living.

hey beauties! i’m so excited the opening day is finally hereeee. i’m carmadi and i can’t wait to interact/meet each one of you. here’s a little sum sum about crimson cooper.

crimson cooper was born in miami florida, known for its “gorgeous white sandy beaches and awesome parties”, to two wealthy parents (her father a plastic surgeon and her mom a doctor). although her parents make a lot of cash, they expect their daughter to get a bachelors degree and a masters degree in whatever she pursues. they’re the classic “this is my money. not yours. you have to earn your money but i’ll help you out”. she has a great relationship with her parents but she’s glad to be somewhat far away from her parents cause’ they’re really strict.

die hard vice pres of the delta theta rho sorority. she just bats an eye to all the rumors surrounding their fakeness and chooses to ignore it because she believes her sorority is the best. 

crimson is actually pretty sweet considering she has serious resting bitch face going on. usually, people take her niceness for manipulation and that’s probably because crimson is shady as fuck. girls got a LOT of secrets in her closet (which can be found HERE).

her friends are the biggest priority to her. she’s a loyal friend/sorority sister and will literally help them out if they’re ever done anything wrong. some people may call her naive because she’s always sticking up for her friends even when they’ve messed up.

although she’s super friendly and socially amicable, she lowkey has anger issues. sometimes she lashes out at random people but that’s mainly cause her parents are putting a lot of pressure on her (and want her done school by 25 cause time is important) . and with anger comes REVENGE. if you’ve truly broken crimsons heart then expect some crazy drama cause’ she never forgets.

finally, most of her relationships/friendships turn TOXIC for whatever reasons and this leads to all sorts of drama. so if you’re into drama and angst then message me!!

crimson cooper is basically sammi sweetheart from jersey shore. pleasant to talk to but her personal relationships/friendships outshine everything.

💖 [Heart] What is your favorite moment in this WIP?

It's legitimately hard to choose, but I guess that's what happens when I write a robot enemies to friends story dressed up as a post-apoc story, haha. Every scene between Rhys and Jonathan is so much fun to write but I especially love writing the early conflict scenes. Rhys has grown up believing that androids turned against humanity and Jonathan, having been powered down since before the supposed betrayal, just wants to continue serving humanity like he was programmed to. Both of them feel powerless to stand up to the authority figures in their lives (Rhys with her family and Jonathan with humans since they can literally do whatever they want with him). One scene in particular, Rhys thinks it would solve all her problems to just get rid of him but ends up realizing they might be more alike than she'd care to admit. You can even have a snippet :D

Rhys held the gun steady. "Did you speak to any of my family?" "No, I didn't." Jonathan paused and seemed to measure his words. "But I suppose, if I had to guess, I would say Carmady thinks the lich would be well served by conduits loyal to his cause. That is the only reason I could see for why she would keep me." "So you'd betray us." "I would do as I'm programmed. With a hard reset, I could be made an enemy to humanity, yes, though not in the way you claim androids betrayed your people in the past. They would not do so because they were evil, but because their original commands had been overridden. So yes, I could very well be the thing you fear, but I am not because you found me first. You activated me and ordered me to take no one's commands but your own. "Yes, I am a regulator and it...unnerves me to not have a conduit to serve. While I believe it would substantially increase our chances of survival, whether or not you become a conduit is entirely up to you. "But if you choose to become a conduit, there needs to be a trust between us. For a conduit without a regulator cannot survive and a regulator without a conduit is meaningless. Whatever you decide, I cannot go against it. Order me to power down and I will. Or if you wish to shoot me, then do so. I lack the authority to object."

🎶 [Notes] Do you have any other WIP related things, like moodboards, character portraits, playlists or similar?

This is my favorite form of procrastination. I absolutely love making pinterest boards for my WIPs and UTOPIA is no exception. I also enjoy making youtube playlists of songs that I think fit certain characters or, most likely, songs that would go great for specific scenes if my WIP were a movie. The UTOPIA playlist is mostly symphonic metal with a few instrumentals thrown in.

hayes is super smart and majoring in pre med cause he wants to be a doctor and basically be the most successful person in the world. that’s his ammo. although he’s smart he acts pretty ... dumb? he’s reckless and all over the place. 

he’s born in ireland and migrated over to the states when he was an infant. he’s an only child and has a REALLY good relationship with his parents. his parents are his best friends and he doesn’t care if that’s lame or not lmfao. he doesn’t really care what people think about him.

his parents are rather wealthy so money isn’t a problem, fortunately. but he’s a strange guy and is working part time at a local cafe cause he’s too “cool” for his parents money .. (but the truth is he just doesn’t want the rich kid stereotype).

overall, he’s a nice guy. normal as well. his goals are to finish school asap and get the heck out of there.

ps - he sucks at relationships. he’s terrible at opening up and talking about his feelings. i have a headcanon that his really good friend passed away in ireland around 2014 so ever since then he’s just been closed off.
