The Crossing - Carols After a Plague - Donald Nally’s vocal ensemble performs new works by Tyshawn Sorey, Shara Nova, Edith Canat de Chizy, Joseph C. Phillips Jr, L.J. White, Samantha Fernando, Leila Adu-Gilmore, Vanessa Lann, & Viet Cuong
Throughout its history, the Philadelphia based contemporary chamber choir The Crossing, led by conductor Donald Nally, has championed works that address social, political, and environmental issues. So it is consistent with the group’s history and mission that their latest release, Carols After a Plague, takes a broad view of our collective experience of the recent pandemic era, inviting twelve composers to look inward and engage with some of myriad ways in which the last few years have forced all of us to confront difficult realities and gain strength from solidarity with one another. The result is a moving tribute to the resilience of communities and a clarion call to renew our collective commitment to justice. Interwoven throughout the twelve newly commissioned choral works are a prelude and twelve interludes composed by conductor Donald Nally that create a ritualistic scaffolding for the larger works. Soulful trumpet lamentations, haunting marimba rolls, brilliant splashes of vibraphone color, evocative mandolin melodies, and tolling bells, among other textures, establishe an anchor for the contrasting sound scapes of the other repertoire, unifying the collection into one larger album length work. - Dan Lippel Donald Nally, conductor Kevin Vondrak, assistant conductor John Grecia, keyboards Mark Livshits, guest rehearsal accompanist Michael Jones, trumpet Daniel Schwartz and Ted Babcock, marimba Karen Blanchard, Micah Dingler, Joanna Gates, and Kyle Sackett, percussion and paper Kevin Vondrak, mandolin Donald Nally, interludes composer Carols after a Plague was recorded August 29 through September 2, 2021, and August 11, 2022, at St. Peter’s Church in the Great Valley, Malvern, Pennsylvania Artwork: “The New Normal” (cover), “Astronaut Terrier,” and “Big Fish” by Sasan Pix (2021) sasanpix.com Design: Marc Wolf, marcjwolf.com

Rage 35/35 -Stephen King
24
He now knows they had the best sharpshooter in the state out there, when Charlie aimed at Ted, Malvern took his chance over his heart, unfortunately that’s where Charlie put the padlock.
25
It knocked him back, but he still held the pistol, Irma was screaming, and Ted was yelling that they got him until Charlie ordered him to sit back down. He yelled at the cops to stay back, or he’ll start shooting and fires a warning into the air. Philbrick calls that Denver is going to the office, Charlie loaded the clip again keeping it aimed at them, pulling the lock out of his pocket, the bullet had bulged it but not broken. (a year later there was a commercial where a lock was shot and he puked from it) He tells Denver those bastards tried to shoot him, he doesn’t care they didn’t mean it, go tell Philbrick he almost had a bloodbath, for them not to move for another hour, at noon he wants to talk to Philbrick again and tells Denver to start asserting himself.
Charlie asked Sandra about her affair with Ted, Ted tells Sandra she doesn’t want to say anything, Sandra smiles saying she wants to get it on. Charlie felt the pain in his chest receding, his head felt funny, he almost felt he was holding them by willpower. “Now I know, of course, that nothing could have been further from the truth. I had one real hostage that day, and his name was Ted Jones.”p.95 (is it because he won’t play along with your games) Sandra says Ted asked her to formal, Charlie never asked her, after Ted had got them real cocktails because he knew the man that ran the Hawaiian Hut. The other students stared at him, not liking it. (I was thinking this was going he got her drunk and took advantage of her) He kissed her goodnight, and they went out three more times until April, where he wanted to go to the Rollerdome, Charlie remembers his failing courage to ask he to a dance At the Rollerdome a bunch of kids got in a fight and a boy rolled past them telling Ted to fuck her since he already did so Ted punched him. She saw Ted grin and for the first time looked like he was having fun (so like Charlie Ted has a violent streak is this also why Charlie is targeting him because they’re alike) before he went to the kid that started it and ripped off his jacket.
After they drove to the gravel pit and did it in the backseat. (you just saw him get pleasure by violence and went yes I’ll let you get in my pants) After, Ted apologized offering to get married if she got pregnant. Sometimes she feels fake like a doll, her life being a film set, she asks Charlie if he feels like that, no. She felt like that even more after Ted and imagines telling her parents she was pregnant their reaction would have been real. After a while she forgot about it and went back to the Rollerdome, another boy picked her up that made her feel alive, Ted looked at her in horror and revulsion and started to gag. She goes on about it and Ted yells at her to shut up, calling her a whore, to shut her mouth or he’ll do it for her. Dick tells him to shut up he got his, they usually hang out together, but Charlie doubts they will after this.
Sandra says she came early without doing it and that was it, but it felt real, but she tells Charlie this is better than that and Charlie wonders. (I call bullshit no teenage girl who wants a social life would ever talk about her sexcapades in class) “How do people know they’re real?”p.99 The class didn’t look sick, no thought of how she could say that unlike Philbrick, Mr. Grace and Denver would. Charlie had believed things would change but people didn’t and realized he’s been playing baseball on a soccer field. He wasn’t in position to review moral implications, only Ted looked horrified, but he didn’t count anymore. Carol confesses she doesn’t know what's going to happen, she’s afraid this will change things, she liked how they were going, she doesn’t want things to change but her comments had no power, things were out of control. Charlie says it’s his turn to share.
26
In the summer before Junior year, Charlie and Joe drove up to see Joe’s brother, Pete. He got drunk on Friday and Saturday Pete gave them a tour of campus. Pete runs into Scragg Simpson, who tells them to go to a party and bring dope. They get some from Jerry in Oldtown who teaches them how to smoke it and listen to records until five. “That’s the last really happy time I can remember.”p.103 They did find the cabin party and Charlie felt unsure around the college people, but everyone was drunk and stoned. Pete offers some weed to Dana, and they toked up and Charlie was horny for Dana through the party. She takes him out the back door and he waits for her to follow, by that time he wasn’t horny anymore. She warns not to tell Pete they have a kind of thing. (Charlie is probably sixteen here you’re college age so on top of being a statutory rapist she’s also a cheater)
Under the stairs he couldn’t get it up, but he suddenly remembered his father and his hunting knife, she says it’s the dope and to wait a while before following her back inside. Pete and Dana were gone, Joe was making out with a girl, so Charlie sat waiting for the party to be over. They left as the sun was rising, he didn’t know how much damage was done to him and asleep he dreamed of the creaking thing getting closer until his father and mother burst through the door. Her nose was cut wide open and his father yelling at him to take her. He woke up screaming with morning wood.
27
No one said anything, Ted was staring at him with hatred, Irma complained of needing the bathroom but says she can hold it, Charlie allows her to leave. She hesitates at the door asking if he’ll shoot her, he wasn’t sure and was still disturbed Sandra’s story had more power than his. “In some undefined way, they had gained the upper hand. I had a crazy feeling that instead of my holding them, it was the other way around.”p.108 Except for Ted they were all holding him, if he did shoot her, he had nothing to lose, maybe help him wake up in this crazy dream.
Irma left, she didn’t run and Charlie felt unexplainable relief. He waited to see her run outside, it didn’t happen and the footsteps came back, Charlie pointed the gun at the door, suddenly knowing the last order of business. Five minutes before he would have welcomed the footsteps, he would have put down the gun and met them, he was afraid Philbrick decided to take him up on his offer. Ted grinned as they all watched the door, a shadow in the window, Charlie got ready as Irma came back in asking why they were staring, people go to the bathroom. It was almost noon.
28
Philbrick was on time, not breathing as heavily, maybe taking Charlies advice. Charlie tells him to save the apologies, he’s just embarrassing himself and promises to release everyone at one, they have business to finish, they all know what it is. Charlie tells him someone will pull down the shades, don’t get any ideas or someone will get hurt, Philbrick finally agrees. Ted asks what other masturbation fantasies does he have Charlie ignores him and has Melvin close the shades, but the shadows made him jumpy and has Tanis turn on the lights, but he still wished for sunlight. Charlie says there's a half story of Carlson that Denver managed to keep out of the papers and how his father and him got it on during his suspension and he began to swirl fragments of reality. “Lunacy is when you can't see the seams where they stitched the world together anymore.”p.113 He supposed there was a chance he’d wake in his bed still half sane, but he wasn’t betting on it.
29
There was no reason why he started carrying a pipe wrench to school, he used to imagine people picking fights with him, he wasn’t sleeping very well, his dreams scared him. He almost killed Carlson on the third of March, he called him up to the board to do a problem from the previous physics class and started to mock him in front of the class. His pipe wrench fell out of his pocket and Charlie told him not to touch it, his mind going twelve directions and something funny happened to him, but it wasn’t really. “There must be a line in all of us, a very clear one, just like the line that divides the light side of the planet from the dark. I think they call that line the terminator. That’s a very good word for it. Because at one moment I was freaking out, and the next I was cool as a cucumber.”p.115 He swung at the board several times feeling better as Carlson jumped. Carlson tried to grab him and Charlie turned on him, just one hit and it broke the spell, he dropped the wrench and told the office what he did. There were conferences with nearly everybody, his father was calm, but Charlie knew he could cheerfully kill him with his own hands in simpler times. Charlie had to apologize to Carlson but got none for being made fun of. (I’m sorry you’re such a piece of human crap Carlson and I’m sorry you have such a tiny dick you can only get off by bullying children)
His father had him meet in the garage, but Charlie threatened if his father came at him with his belt, he’d take it from him for every time he struck him and for threatening to slit his mother's nose open. His father warns not to try blaming this on him, Charlie tells him he fucked up his only child and turned into a boozehound. As Charlie is crying his father warns him to stop before he wants to kill him, Charlie tells him to try since he’s wanted to do it to him for thirteen years, he hates him. His father snaps and swings at him. Charlie dodges and he hits the car instead, his look was that when he found the broken storm windows. Charlie was so distracted he forgot to dodge again and it ripped his cheek, the blood shocking his father. (what did you expect) When he went towards him Charlie grabbed his belt and trips him up, he had forgotten Charlie wasn’t little anymore. “Maybe he had forgotten or never knew that little boys grow up remembering every blow and word of scorn, that they grow up and want to eat their father’s alie.”p.118
On the ground Charlie now beat him with the belt, telling him to say yes sir to the Marines if his kid can knock him down. (I think you hurt him hit him again to make sure) His father lunged at him, but Charlie hit him across the face and punched him in the stomach and he realized the man he really wanted to hurt was years out of reach. His father grabbed a rake and Charlie got a hatchet threatening to cut off his head, they stood there until they put them back.
His father didn’t say if he had the guts to do it five years ago it wouldn’t happen now and Charlie didn’t say sorry, it just happened because he was big enough. “None of it changed anything. Now I wish it was him I’d killed, if I had to kill anyone. This thing on the floor between my feet is a classic case of misplaced agression.”p.119 (is this the entire book Charlie’s father picked and picked at him until like a beaten dog he snaped but he snapped at the wrong people) His father took him to get stitches and Charlie lied about what happened and never spoke of it again and his father never told him what to do again. They sent him back to school in April, his case still under consideration, he had to see Mr. Grace every day. Now it didn’t take long to go bad with everyone looking at him, (so it became a feedback loop) nobody but Joe would talk to him. Things went from bad to worse, he didn’t get the pipe wrench back but he didn’t need it, he knew where his father's pistol was and by the end of April carried that to school. (this is why you need to keep your firearms and ammo separate and locked up especially when you have a kid in the house)
30
It was 12:30 and he asked if anyone has any questions, Susan says she’s sorry for him. Charlie asks if they learned anything, he watched them, they were frozen. “When you're five and you're hurt, you make a big noise unto the world. At ten you whimper. But by the time you make fifteen you begin to eat the poisoned apples that grow on your inner tree of pain.”p.120 Pig Pen raised his hand first and then the rest, he called on Carol thinking she deserved her moment, effortlessly she crossed the terminator. She said the answer is to help Ted know where he went wrong. Charlie suggests himself as judge and public attorney, everyone else as witnesses with Ted as the defendant. Ted refuses to say anything until he’s out of there, Anne asks what he’s so afraid of. Ted trembles yelling that Charlie’s crazy, he shot two people and is holding them hostage, Irma corrects that she isn't, she could have walked out. Susan tells him he could be a meaningful experience, Ted keeps repeating that Charlie’s a killer. (so did Charlie turn the rest of the class to see his point of view or is this a mob Stockholm syndrome were they’re singling out the one outsider)
Dick asks where does he get off, does it shake his little life he’s not a white knight, the rest of the class starts to needle him and Ted says he’s had enough, he’s leaving. Charlie says he has no intention of shooting him, just reminds him he hasn’t done his duty and Dick tackles him and Sandra pulls his shirt open, so he spits at her. Sarah says he cheats off her papers and Billy pulls his hair and Dan says he cheats laps in gym too. Ted begs Charlie as the students circle around him asking questions and accusations, messing with him, Ted keeps begging until Nancy shoves paper in his mouth. They paused when they see Charlie pointed the gun at his own head, but then he unloads it and puts it in the drawer. This wasn’t today's lesson plan, he thought they now got it all on and they fell on him.
31
He had Corky pull up the shades before they left, now it looked like there were thousands of people out there, three minutes to one. He tells them goodbye, they all said it back and he watched them walk across the lawn, their hands streaked with ink and people envelop them. Philbrick went to the school as cameras flashed, Charlie went over to Ted who’s cowered in the corner covered in ink and sits by him telling him he’s going to get better and forget this day or he won't, maybe he’ll build from this. Philbrick orders him to come out, Charlie tells him to come get him, Philbrick warns they’ll shoot the gas canister, Charlie warns him not to as a student’s still in here, Philbrick accuses him of lying. Charlie tells him the gun’s in the drawer, he can come and tell everyone he took him down single handed. Philbrick clicks off and Charlie starts to cry, when Philbrick sees Ted he blames Charlie who makes a grab at something behind the desktop plants, Philbrick shoots him three times. (so he’s a cop that shot an unarmed child)
32
A court report of August 27 1976, Charlie was convicted (how did he survive) of Underwood and Vance's murders but deemed by five psychiatrists that he couldn’t be held accountable by reason of insanity and is to be remanded at a state hospital until he can be certified to answer for his acts.
33
Memo from Dr Anderson of Ted Jones, he’s catatonic and the doctor is hesitant to try shock therapy after six weeks of the drug regiment and a few trials. If only they knew what happened in that classroom, now he’s not as hopeful as he once was.
34
Joe writes to Charlie now that he's allowed to, he’s in Boston at college now thinking of majoring in English, must be his influence since he’s always been the brains. He met his mother who told him he was almost better but not talking much, doesn’t sound like him. Sandra wrote to him she decided not to go to college this year, waiting for something, he tried to date her, but she seemed distant. What happened about Pig Pen and Dick was censored but Joe writes that you can never tell what people will do. (I assume it has something to do with Pig Pen’s cunt of a mother) Carol’s valedictory speech was printed in Seventeen magazine on Self Integrity and a Normal Response to It. Irma is dating a hippie from Lewiston, they were in a demonstration when Dole came to Portland, arrested but let go when he flew out, they would have laughed at Dole’s campaign sign. Grace is getting married, but that was also censored, you can never tell what people are getting up to. He wishes him well and wants to visit first when he’s allowed to have them. “There are a lot of us pulling for you, Charlie. Pulling hard. People haven't forgotten. You know what I mean. You have to believe that.”p.130 (so he had a crap home life and people can be sympathetic about that but I assume it’s mostly the class he held hostage he turned them to his viewpoint hence why they turned on Ted)
35
Charlie hasn’t had bad dreams for two weeks, he’s done a lot of jigsaw puzzles, he hates the custard, but he eats it, he finally has a secret since they think he does like it. He hasn’t unwrapped the yearbook his mom sent, soon he can look at the pictures and not tremble as soon as he can make himself believe their won't be black streaks on their hands. (do you have remorse for what you turned them into) “That their hands will be clean.”p.131 Maybe next week he’ll be sure. The custard is only a little secret. “but having a secret makes me feel better. Like a human being again.”p.131 He says goodnight as he has to turn off the light now.
(that’s it that’s what everybody was making a big deal about from all the other shit King wrote that was pretty tame I can’t believe he bent the knee for this people blame music people blame books people blame video games people will always find a scape goat and excuse for the evil they do and don’t give me didn’t want to inspire others shit The Running Man was published in 1982 at the end the protagonist hijacks a plane and flies it into a government building with this as the final line "The explosion was tremendous, lighting up the night like the wrath of God, and it rained fire twenty blocks away." and you didn’t see King pull it from publishing after 9/11)

Take a Look at Burkholder’s New Landscaping Projects
Each year our designers help Main Line homeowners upgrade their landscapes with new landscaping projects. Sometimes the upgrade is as simple as adding a new custom stone walkway or a specially designed deck. Other projects are more elaborate, incorporating water features like pools and spas, outdoor kitchens, firepit entertaining areas, and softscaping. Below are a some of the landscape design projects we have completed.
Tumblr media
Pool and Patio Retreat
We collaborated with Ted’s Pools on this gorgeous backyard. This project included retaining walls, seat walls and steps using Techo-Bloc 6” Mini Creta Architectural caps in beautiful chestnut brown. The patio and walkway were built using Techo-Bloc Blu 60 pavers in Champlain Grey.
The natural stone steps in the spa area are West Mountain Steps and the boulders surrounding the space are a brown granite.
Additionally, our team created this amazing outdoor space by adding plantings that would highlight the area with blooms from Spring throughout Fall, with an emphasis on summer, while the pool is in use.
Backyard Oasis
Check out this beautiful backyard oasis! Our team created this gorgeous new outdoor living space using Blu Grande Techo-Bloc pavers for the patio and walkways. We built a composite wood grilling island and a raised spa with a waterfall spillway. Now the client has a staycation location right in their backyard!
Techo-Bloc Patio
This cozy backyard living space is fall-ready!
Our team completed this Techo-Bloc Blu60 Patio with a gorgeous Valencia Firepit and Techo-Bloc Mini Creta Architectural retaining walls. Plantings and outdoor residential lighting were added as well to make the space complete.
Malvern Backyard Project
A client in Malvern, Pa was outgrowing their existing deck, patio, and outdoor kitchen in the summer of 2022. Our design team came up with a plan to fit their needs. This was a great project to build and the transformation is pretty incredible. Now the family and their friends have amazing outdoor spaces to enjoy year round!
Private Oasis
In summer of 2022, a client wanted to add outdoor living spaces to their landscape.  Our plan included a new deck and patio, pavilion with seating and a television, a pool with a rock waterfall. Now the clients have their own backyard oasis.
Outdoor Upgrade
Here are some before pictures of a project we finished in June of 2022. We used a mixture of natural stone and Techo-bloc products to create a level area for an inviting bluestone walkway with ample space for colorful plantings and landscape lighting.
Backyard Pool Project
We completed this particular project in May 2020. We used flagstone pavers as the primary material for the pool deck and surround, which are durable, slip-resistant, and complement the pool’s design nicely. A few lights around the pool and the chairs help provide a lovely ambiance at night. The pool area has a significant amount of softscaping, and the plants are coming in and blooming wonderfully. Our crews did a fantastic job, from the design process to the final stages of building, and the client is ecstatic.
A Backyard Transformation
Our new landscaping projects vary in scope and complexity, and this particular project was a full backyard transformation. We had a thorough design consultation and process to fully understand what our clients wanted their dream backyard to become for starters. Next, we designed the pool, the spa with waterfall and natural stone veneer, and the pavilion, which is excellent for outdoor entertaining.
The entertainment area features a stone fireplace, plenty of seating, a built-in television and a natural stone countertop for meals and drinks. Backyard transformations take time to plan and build, but the result is a beautiful, ideal landscape.
Small, Yet Detailed Patio
In contrast to the complete backyard transformation, we have smaller scale projects such as new patios. Our hardscape crew used flagstone pavers, and the warm, earthy tones give the patio an organic, natural appearance.
The different sizes, shapes, and intricate patterns of the pavers also provide the patio with a unique aesthetic, enhancing visual interest and complexity. And the wall nearby has a couple of undercap lights, which makes the outdoor space more usable and inviting during the night. We are proud of the work one of our hardscaping crews did with this project, and this patio is an excellent example of what you can have on your property.
Regrade for New Retaining Wall and Patio
These homeowners wanted to expand their outdoor living space, but the slope was a little too steep. So we cut down the existing grade and installed a Techo Bloc Semma retaining wall and Techo Bloc Blu 60 pavers.

DTS Episode 2: Ace in the Hole Recap
This is Mclaren’s episode.
Whoever at Netflix edited episode 2 has a hard on for Daniel Ricciardo and I don’t blame them.
Zak is such a dad. He’s so supportive and optimistic and sweet to both drivers. Great dad vibes. 10/10.
Max Fewtrell and Lando golfing. Why does Lando’s voice sound different in the B-roll interviews? Is it just me? I don’t follow Lando so maybe I’m just not used to his voice.
Michael Italiano in the flesh ladies and gentlemen.
Can we replace Will Buxton with Ted Kravitz?
The Carlando bromance continues. Glad Carlos felt comfortable with his move to Ferrari.
Netflix back at it again with the teammate rivalry plot. This better be part of an enemies to friends to lovers plot arc otherwise I don’t want it.
Jon Malvern (Lando’s trainer) making fun of Daniel’s catchphrase “Let’s fuck shit up” is some middle schooler behavior.
I forgot how painful Daniel’s race pace at the beginning of the season was. Watching it back kinda hurts.
Daniel not wanting to do press after his P16 finish was rough. I really felt Daniel’s “What if I’m just a c*nt” when Michael tried to give him a motivational speech to do press. Sometimes, you just don’t want to hear it in the moment. Give him some time to wallow and come to terms with his results.
Ooh sprinkles of Charles and Carlos. I didn’t know that they spent so much time off the track together. Good to know.
I almost thought Whiny Spice was giving someone a compliment then realized it was just a backhanded insult to Zak Brown.
That scene of Charles and Carlos gossipping about Lando’s multi-year contract makes me laugh so hard. Charles telling Carlos what to text Lando gives me “middle school girl trying to text her crush” energy.
Ngl that PR strategy meeting between Daniel and Lando after the whole “I don’t feel sympathy” comment looked so uncomfy. That might be Netflix editing but oof.
Watching Charles get pole in Monaco knowing what comes next is painful.
I thought Portugal was bad, Daniel’s Monaco race audio…

A Little British Jaunt
A week before we were due to depart to Florida on May 17th, I had a sudden realisation. Kroc Fury, a local 9-12 year old football (soccer) team, were set to play in the finals on May 18th. Normally, I wouldn’t care very much that a children’s team had a game, but on this occasion it was important because I’m the coach. Unbeaten since the first game of the season, they had a real chance of winning the whole thing for the first time since my inaugural season nearly three years ago. I had to make a decision: a) disappoint my wife, leaving her to drive eight hours alone and go down a day later to Florida on the plane, or b) disappoint a bunch of children who idolise me as a demi-god and changer of lives. I booked my flight for after the game. Oh yeah, it was also my wife’s birthday on May 17th. We lost the game on penalties, so I made the wrong decision. They really did let me down. Embarrassing.

Kroc Fury changing their name to “The Let Me Downs” for next season.
Anyway, after sorting all that out we arrived back in England on Monday morning. After a day of tea and biscuits, we joined my parents on a trip to Oxford to see my brother. He’s teaching there while his girlfriend gets a degree from Oxford (ohhh, posh). Wandering the streets where other great academics had once roamed — Tolkein, Wilde, Hawking, Theresa May (ahem), had made me feel quite at home. I started to wonder whether I should have made more of an effort throughout my school life, messed around less, participated in positive extracurricular activities, got the qualifications I needed to get in, and had actually applied to go there, but then I thought, that sounds like a lot of hard work and I may never have come second in that pizza eating contest if I’d have chosen that path.
After exploring the historic buildings, like the pub that Tolkein himself used to frequent, the old university grounds, and the Uniqlo that sold those boxer shorts that I like, we ate a Lebanese meal with my brother and headed back to Worcester on yet another pretty train ride.
The next day, I was planning on getting pissed with my friends from University. It’s mad to think that I’ve known these guys since I was ten, because I haven’t. We met at University, I just said that — pay attention. My friends were coming from Cardiff and they suggested meeting in the middle at Chepstow on the border of Wales. After arriving, I quickly found out that it was only 15 minutes from Cardiff and over an hour and a half from Worcester. Haha, they don’t half like a wind up, those guys.
Tumblr media
Bros in Chepstow on tip toes.
They had been in Wetherspoons since 10am, so me and Shelby had some catching up to do and we did so in one of the top five pub gardens in the whole country —the Three Tuns Inn. The only thing that was three tonnes by the time we left was my bladder after all the ale I drank, let me tell you (because I’m proper tough and manly). We reminisced over old memories and looked out over the nearly thousand year old castle. I was a little bit tipsy by the time we got back to the train station, where Rich (my so-called friend) twisted his ankle on the bridge and made quite a fuss about it. Maybe that wouldn’t have happened if we’d have met somewhere closer to Worcester, like Cheltenham perhaps, where I’ve heard the floorboards in the bridge have recently been refurbished.
Tumblr media
This candid picture was taken just after the incident. You can see Rich looking at his ankle and, from a safe distance, Jake also staring at it, both wishing they were in Cheltenham no doubt.
The weekend came along and with it was the dawning of “Family Day”. In the morning, the family came over to our house and we drank mimosas and Bloody Mary’s. Later on we went over to my aunt’s house for pizza and the main event: Shelby’s Great British Poker Tournament. Joel, wearing sunglasses to disguise his sad little eyes, went ahead early on. He was incredibly cocky the whole time, which made it even more unbearable. I looked like I was heading for an early exit at one point. Down to my last chips, I went all in. I had to win to stay in the game. And did. The weaklings dropped like flies around me after that — Cat was so afraid she didn’t show up; Leah, gone; Lucy, bye bye; Mom, pathetic; Leah, it’s not snap!; Abby, come on now; Mika, no chance; Dad, embarrassingly kept saying that he was getting no cards up his end of the table when I know for a fact he was because of a carefully placed mirror behind him. Down to the last four players, the game started to get interesting. Jack won big and had the majority of the chips. He really let me down with a couple of poor decisions and then I basically bowed out to make him feel better when he lost them all. James came in second and Joel won. You’d think he’d won the Superbowl (that’s basically the Wimbledon Final for the Brits out there).
Tumblr media
“And this one is called Cooke, the Baker. Now, do you understand, Joel?”
The next morning, James, Joel and Mika rocked up in a massive clanger of an Mercedes that he had bought recently. He kept saying how it was a cult favorite and everybody wanted one. Yeah, it was a cult favorite alright, looks like the bloody Manson Family used to own it! (Unfortunately, I didn’t say this at the time because it has taken me a couple of weeks to think of it, but I think my silence said basically the same thing). Still buoyed from his jackpot the night before, Joel was ready to splash some cash at the local flea market and I was ready to be told I didn’t need certain items by Shelby and that we couldn’t get them back on the plane anyway. As we turned into the car park, the parking attendant told James to roll down his window. I was half expecting him to tell him to leave because he’d sold him a dodgy motor in the past. Instead, he said “Can you get me one of those cars? I’ve wanted one for ages.” James, smugly smiled.
After we entered, James immediately walked off in no particular direction rather than wandering around with his nephew he hadn’t seen in nearly a year. The rest of us traipsed around the stalls, Joel purchasing a carved wooden candle stick holder shaped like Jesus and Mika spotting a great gift for Ed Ford’s birthday. It was a lamp that had been crudely taped to a cricket bat and ball. It was the tackiest thing in the whole market. Joel was conned into buying some sunglasses that made him look like Ted Bundy and I bought three old West Brom programs for my brother and dad. All in all, a partial success of a market. When we were about to leave, Mika and Joel went back to buy the cricket lamp. They returned sullenly a little while later with no lamp. Remarkably, somebody else had bought it! Howzat!?
Tumblr media
Ted Bundy and his weird dog, Bear, who kept jizzing on everything (the dog, not Joel).
After Family Day drew to a close, Monday was unofficially named “Friend Day”. There’s a pub in Worcester that Ali Wilson says is his favourite. For this reason and many others, I have never ever been there. On this occasion, it was worth it. They were hosting a reggae sound system in the garden on Friend Day afternoon. With the sun beating down and the beats booming out, I could see why it was a good place to be, until I went inside to order a drink. I refused to give Joel the money to increase his single whisky to a double. In response, the landlord said something antisemitic about me not paying for it. Fortunately, Shelby was still outside, otherwise he might have been on the wrong end of a Jewish headlock. The music thumped out of the speakers and the droves of white people with dreadlocks bopped their heads in tandem and smoked a special kind of cigarette that had a very distinctive smell to it. I wouldn’t know what that stuff was though.
The next few days flew by like a low flying drone illegally filming somebody’s barbecue. On Tuesday evening, I jogged down to Pitchcroft, the local racecourse to play football with the lads for the first time since my knee operation. Will I ever be the player I was before again? I hope not, as I wasn’t that great and this knee is supposed to be better than the last one according to my doctor, Neil Snapinhaff, I think he’s Dutch (say it slowly to get the full benefit of this excellent joke).
Tumblr media
Stoked to be here, folks.
Wednesday, we drove out to Malvern and marvelled at the ancient hills that were said to have inspired Tolkein’s Lord of the Rings (this blog is very Tolkein heavy for some reason). Thursday, we said goodbye to dad and went to Brighton for one final night of fun before hopping on the plane home.
Once in the coastal home of my cousin and her girlfriend, Abby, we went to eat a wonderful curry and had drinks at a cafe with computer games and stuff in. I didn’t much feel like playing games though. I took a moment alone outside and walked to the pebble beach. It was quiet out there, just the sound of the crashing waves to keep me company. I stared across the pebbles. There’s no place like it I said, but I looked around and nobody had followed me outside to hear my poignant statement. I ran back into the building and shouted loudly “I said there’s no place like it!” They all stared at me and then carried on playing their games and drinking their drinks. I suppose, life goes on for these little Englanders when I’m not around. And my great country will still be here for me whenever I need it.
Tumblr media
Not the only pebble dashing I’d done that week.
Sidenote: I was astonished to see the amount of kids who now do wheelies down the streets of Worcester. I may sound like a Daily Mail reader here, but I would just like to say that it’s very annoying and frightening for the elderly women who are just trying to stand and look at clothes they won’t buy. If all of you are doing it, then it’s not as impressive, is it? So, I propose you design a schedule that allots a different weekday for all of you to do it somewhere quieter, like, the car park of an abandoned warehouse. Also, I tried the Gregg’s vegan sausage roll and it was so good, I actually thought the woman in there had inadvertently given me a meat one, which, in fairness, she might have done as it was very busy. So have that, Piers Morgan, you daft bell end.

This day was all about friends and art.
That dude in the middle of the painting does NOT look impressed with the baby.
Somebody is hungover.
The eternal Keanu Reeves.
Michaelangelo’s David was perfection. The Seven Virtues were breathtaking. The Venus was gorgeous. Rape of the Sabine Woman was terrifying, yet mesmerizing. Birth of Venus was stunning. Keeanu Reeves was Time-Travelling Keeanu Reeves. (Perhaps from an unreleased Bill and Ted movie?) Then there was a lot of Jesus, Mary, and as usual, people dying, people dead, and people looking sad/angry/confused.
Tumblr media
In between the Galleria dell’Academia and the Uffizi Gallery, we met up with these awesome people! Malvern representin’ in Florence, y’all! Of course, pizza was had by all.
Tumblr media
Taking in some culture in the form of a performance of La Boheme with Kevin and his beautiful Fiona.
And after the Uffizi, we met up with these awesome people! Al Tafawoq representin’ in Florence, y’all! Guess what we had. That’s right! McDonald’s! No we had pizza.
Kevin and his lovely wife Fiona accompanied us to a performance of the opera La Boheme at a church nearby.
Thankfully, at the start of every scene, an MC of sorts came out and explained what was about to go down so we could at least sort of follow along. For those unfamiliar with this opera (you undignified degenerates), it follows two young men and their pursuit of love. One falls tragically in love, while another reconnects with his ex-lover.
Despite not having a clue what anybody was saying, it had plenty of amusing moments–including when the pianist “accidentally” started playing the wrong music and had to be stopped by the cast.
After the opera, Trevor and I parted ways with Kevin and Fiona, and that’s when everything fell apart.
I hadn’t booked the hostel from the previous night because part of me hoped that I might be able to land us a last minute host for the night. Alas, we were on our own. What we didn’t know, though, was that the artist known as Jamiroquoi was playing Florence that night. (I don’t even care if that’s how you spell his name or not; I’m not going to look it up, because he’s a jerk.) This proved to be a problem.
As far as I knew, Jameeroqwhy hadn’t put out a hit since that song where he’s in that room dancing on the walls and junk and all the furniture is moving around. You know the one I’m talking about. I think it came out in the late 90’s. As far as I knew, his best days as a musician were behind him. But no, Jamearakwhy is apparently so damn popular in Italy that all of Italy flocked to Florence that night and booked every single hotel in the city! Every. Single. Hotel.
You think I’m kidding? For the next several hours, I visited two hostels and over thirty hotels. With the exception of the one that cost 200 Euros per night, every single one was full.
Then at around 2:00, I became hopeful. I walked into a reception area, and I saw a set of room keys on the desk. Just one. And behind the counter, there was another set on the shelf. Maybe, just maybe, I might get a few hours of sleep tonight. Only problem was that there was nobody at reception. So I sat and waited.
After the first 5 minutes, I started making myself comfy. I figured, worst case scenario, the receptionist has buggered off for the night, and I can just sleep on this chair for free for the night. About 25 minutes after I had arrived, just as I was starting to doze off, a bald middle aged Italian man walked in. I thought he might be the elusive receptionist, but he turned out to be a homeless vagabond like myself. He’d been to the Jameeroky concert and had a blast, apparently.
He sat down in the other empty chair and we got to talking. His name was Fabio. He was a 49 year old divorced proud father of a 17 year old daughter he clearly loves very much. Fabio and I quickly became friends. He figured the receptionist was either sleeping or having a good time with a fellow concert goer in one of the rooms.
After another half hour or so, the mysterious receptionist finally poked his head out of one of the rooms. He was a large dishevelled old man who, hopefully, had seen better days. Seeing him walk out of that room, I foolishly thought that meant there was an empty room. Unfortunately, that room was apparently reserved for him to sleep on the job, because he said the hotel had no vacancies. He suggested we try to find ourselves a comfortable spot to sit and watch the sunrise at the bus terminal, which should be open.
It wasn’t.
Fat bastard.
Fabio and I sat on the curb and tried to think of our next move. By this time, though, we’d become friends for life, laughing, joking, discussing everything from the silly to the mundane, to the profound. Our mutual misfortunes had brought us together.
Just as the drunkards started to crawl out from the shadowy depths of the streets of Florence, I found our salvation: 24 hour McDonald’s. We moved the party towards the Golden Arches and passed the remaining hours of the night in the lap of luxury–at least, it felt like it compared to the curb outside of the bus terminal.
As the sun began to rise, I felt like a character at the end of a horror movie. You know at the very end of the movie, when the sole survivor manages to escape their torturers, emerging at the side of the road just as the sun is rising. They slowly limp off towards the horizon as the camera pans up to the sky, signalling a new day, a new beginning, and fades to black.
Well as we limped off towards the bus terminal, Fabio laughed and joked, “Y’know, I think I will give our hotel–Hotel McCafe–a great review on Trip Advisor.”
What a night.
The moral of the story: Fuck you, Jameerohqy. Fuck you right in your Jamearoakwhy.
Florence: Go to Hell, Jamiroquai This day was all about friends and art. Michaelangelo's David was perfection. The Seven Virtues were breathtaking.

Tattooist
by Ted Underwood Dip. Scratch. Draw. Repeat. He was nothing if not methodical. A celestial map tattooed upon two favoured concubines was The Emperor's wish. Tsi, whose hair smelt of the tundra, whose eyes shone the fierce blue of winter skies, was The North. Shun, whose lips tasted of oceans, whose generous curves were adorned with nothing but pearls, was The South. His days were filled with soft flesh, deep moans and the metallic scent of drizzling blood. Sweat played upon his temples and the needle slipped between trembling fingers. He breathed deeply. And longed for night, where his dreams were his own. Author bio: Ted Underwood is a teacher, poet and occasional (bad) actor. He lives in the shadow of the beautiful Malvern Hills with his wonderful, and much appreciated, family.

Ted Hill: England international signs first Worcester Warriors first team contract
Ted Hill: England international signs first Worcester Warriors first team contract
Ted Hill: England international signs first Worcester Warriors first team contract
Ted Hill’s Worcester debut in the win at Leicester earned him two tries and a hug and a kiss from mum
England’s latest international Ted Hill has signed his first Worcester contract, 17 days after the highly-rated teenager earned his first cap.
The 19-year-old back-row forward has made a real impact since marking his debut at Leicester in September with a match-winning second try of the game.
That helped to earn the flanker an England call as a late replacement against Japan on 17 November.
“He’s got a very good physique. Big, rangy and tough,” said Eddie Jones.
“We got him into the squad in Portugal,” the England coach told BBC Sport. “He impressed everyone with his demeanour.
“He didn’t get fazed. He has made that transition quite easily. He reminds me of a New Zealand number six.”
Worcester director of rugby Alan Solomons said: “I can understand Eddie wanting to give him that opportunity, so I’m not entirely surprised.
“He’ll be the better for the experience of working in the England camp and actually being involved in the Test match 23, even though he only got a short cameo,
“Ted is a terrific young player who has shown maturity beyond his years. He has a fantastic attitude in training and this comes through on matchday.
“He has made swift progress since his debut against Leicester at Welford Road and is now a first-team regular.”
Playing for England was ‘surreal’
Ted Hill’s first appearance as an England international was the final six minutes against Japan at Twickenham on 17 November
Hill has still only made three Premiership starts in his 10 first-team appearances. But, having created so many headlines so quickly, it makes sound business sense for Warriors to sign up the Malvern-born, Worcester-educated Warriors academy product on this undisclosed-length deal.
“This is my home club,” said Hill. “So I am delighted to have signed a first-team contract. We have a very exciting journey ahead of us and I am really excited to be part of that.
“I have worked with some exceptional people during my time at the club and I have enjoyed being out there on the pitch this season.
“The club have helped me become an England international. It was a massive honour to be invited into the training camps. And it was like the cherry on the top to play against Japan.
“Surreal is the word. Standing there for the anthem, looking out and seeing the family was a crazy moment. An amazing experience.
“It was daunting meeting all those guys who you’ve only seen on TV before.
“Eddie Jones said to me to just go back to Warriors and keep carrying well and keep tackling well. The main bit of advice was to go back and play like an England player.
“There is definitely a calmness going into games now and that comes from being around the best in the country. That’s the natural thing to happen.
“It doesn’t take away from the fact that the Premiership is a brutal league so you can’t be too relaxed otherwise people will snap you out of it.”

Linda Schrank in Melbourne, Day #15
Probably one of my most memorable days so far,  it poured heavily with thunderstorms from early morning until nightfall.  I left my apartment at 8:15 a.m. in order to be in Fitzroy at Neighbourhood Wine, an excellent restaurant, by 9 a.m. There I was greeted by Almay Jordan, the owner and chef.  Born in South Africa where she studied French cooking, Almay moved to Melbourne seventeen years ago and runs the restaurant with her husband Simon who’s the wine connoisseur and buyer. Formerly a “gentlemen’s club,” it was owned by Italians and is reputed to have been the site of a money laundering operation. Fortunately Almay and Simon retained most of the furniture and the interiors and it’s a warm, lovely place. Almay took me into their kitchen where she assigned me various tasks so that we could continue our conversation. I coated the dough for the focaccia with egg white and poppy seeds, weighed out 40 grams of dough for each dinner roll and took hundreds of elderberries off their stems, the first step in creating a syrup to accompany an alcoholic drink. First the berries are bruised to release their oils, then cooked and cooled overnight and mixed with soda in a 1 to 6 proportion and then added to the liquor.  Before I went off Almay made me a fried artichoke salad with eggplant cooked in caramelised maple syrup over a bottom layer of yogurt with rye berries spread on top with herbs. A far better lunch than I grab between events on most days.

I made my way out to Malvern, a distant suburb, or so it seemed with the heavy rains, where I participated in a poetry workshop in the community library. Sukjhit Khalsa, who worked with us, is a performance artist and Ted scholar whose work revolves around identity, feminism and cultural differences.  She works to create empathy through self-expression and to show us what she wanted us to do she performed a piece about her own family. In her performance she talked about her father, a Sikh, whose turban was stolen and had been called a terrorist. Then, within minutes she managed to have a dozen of us talking and discussing each of our relationships with the spoken word. and by the end of two hours we had all written poems that reflected what we had confronted in our own lives. Very cleverly, she managed to get us to speak aloud what we had written as we paraded in file around the room. That is, nobody else could hear what each other was saying so none of us felt self conscious.
Still pouring, the tram quite far away, I took a cab to Essendon near the Melbourne airport because I didn’t want to miss seeing the Sufi mystics, or Whirling Dervishes, as they are often called. For an hour and a half, without pause, they “turned” as one woman told me they describe this in Melbourne. She also said if I waited until their ceremony was over, which included also chanting and meditation, she’d give me a lift back into the city. Captivated by their ease to spin without stopping I tried to understand how they were able to keep moving and not fall over, surely my fate after 30 seconds max. I could see they pivoted on their left foot and spotted with their right hand but it wasn’t until afterwards when I read about their dance did I understand that the “turners” represent the moon moving around the Sheikh who is the sun. Their right palm faces upwards towards heaven and the left hand turns downwards towards the earth.
Though it stopped raining I decided to stick it out through the chanting and meditation because I was curious to spend some time with the woman who had befriended me and wanted to take me into the city. Why, I kept thinking, had she become a Sufi, since it was clear, as she told me, she was born a Catholic and is Australian. What she also told me was that she had been “searching” her whole life and that she had tried several different religions.  The Sheikh had told her she needn’t change anything about herself or garb and that she could join up with them as she was.  With his input she felt comfortable and eventually became part of this group.  Her family, she said, doesn’t understand her but she is finally content.  I didn’t make note to her of my observations  that she now dresses exactly as they do. I didn’t get back to my digs until 10 p.m.

Ted Hill: Worcester Warriors teenage flanker surprised to receive England squad call

Ted Hill: Worcester Warriors teenage flanker surprised to receive England squad call
Ted Hill’s dad, mum and brother were there at Leicester to congratulate him on his match-winning two-try Worcester debut
Teenage Worcester flanker Ted Hill is surprised by his call-up to England’s training squad after less than two and a half hours of Premiership action.
Hill has made headlines in the first month of his professional career since two debut tries, the second of them a last-minute match-winner, as Worcester triumphed at Leicester in September.
He has since scored two more tries – but was not expecting an England call.
“There were a few missed calls from my dad,” Hill, 19, told BBC Sport.
“It’s a bit of a surprise, to be honest.”
Hill was told by Warriors director of rugby Alan Solomons of his invitation from England coach Eddie Jones as an apprentice selection to the pre-autumn international training camp in Portugal.
The SuperTed factfile
Hill came through the ranks at Malvern. “My dad and brother played for Malvern too,” he said. “Dad was captain there years ago. I still help out with their Colts on Tuesday nights. It’s nice going back and helping the club who helped you at the very start.”
He played at blindside flanker for beaten finalists England in last summer’s Under-20 World Cup.
Made his Warriors debut at Leicester on 23 September as a 26th-minute replacement for the injured Sam Lewis.
Scored his first try just 27 minutes after coming on, then scored again in the final minute to win the game.
As well as his try on his first start in a game defeat at Exeter, after 11 minutes as a replacement in the big win over Bristol, Hill also scored in Saturday’s Challenge Cup win over Stade Francais in Paris.
That takes his tally to four tries in just four appearances – three in the Premiership – to make him Warriors’ top scorer.
