Legolas going after the sun on the side of Caradhras (At the moment I thought drawing normal clouds was boring, so I wanted to try something else. ...now I think these clouds are too weird x_x) And the gate to Moria ♥

Back again with more LOTR re-read observations.
Between the storm on Caradhras and the trek through Moria, the Fellowship briefly spends a night camped on the slopes of Caradhras, where they're surrounded by Wargs closing in.
So imagine you're one of the Fellowship, drifting in and out of an uneasy sleep, and suddenly you hear Gandalf shout:
"Listen, Hound of Sauron! Gandalf is here. Fly, if you value your foul skin!"
If I wasn't jumpy before that, I would be then.
Also, the way Gandalf addresses the Warg gives it a feel similar to, "Listen, Carol...." 😂 And I just think that's funny.

apropos of nothing the LOTR movies cut out what could have been excellent himbo content: on caradhras, boromir just beefily bodies his way through the snow to make a path for the others.
why did PJ deny us this?

Caradhras - by The Headless Girl
Caradhras rose before them, a mighty peak, tipped with snow like silver, but with sheer naked sides, dull red as if stained with blood....
'Winter deepens behind us,' Gandalf said quietly to Aragorn....'Tonight we shall be on our way high up towards the Redhorn Gate. We may well be seen by watchers on that narrow path, and waylaid by some evil; but the weather may prove a more deadly enemy than any.'....
'[It] is no good our delaying the passage of the mountains. Further south there are no passes, till one comes to the Gap of Rohan. I do not trust that way since your news of Saruman.'....
When they returned to the Company Gandalf spoke.... [It] had been decided to face the weather and the high pass....
'From signs that we have seen lately,' said Gandalf, 'I fear that the Redhorn Gate may be watched; and also I have doubts of the weather that is coming up behind. Snow may come. We must go with all the speed that we can. Even so it will take us more than two marches before we reach the top of the pass.'....
The Company set out again with good speed at first; but soon their way became steep and difficult. The twisting and climbing road had in many places almost disappeared, and was blocked with many fallen stones.... By midnight they had climbed to the knees of the great mountains. The narrow path now wound under a sheer wall of cliffs to the left, above which the grim flanks of Caradhras towered up invisible in the gloom; on the right was a gulf of darkness where the land fell suddenly into a deep ravine.
Laboriously they climbed a sharp slope.... But before long the snow was falling fast....
Gandalf halted. Snow was thick on his hood and shoulders; it was already ankle-deep about his boots.
Aragorn said, '... I knew the risk of snow, though it seldom falls heavily so far south, save high up in the mountains. But we are not high yet; we are still far down, where the paths are usually open all the winter.'....
While they were halted, the wind died down, and the snow slackened until it almost ceased. They tramped on again. But they had not gone more than a furlong when the storm returned with fresh fury. The wind whistled and the snow became a blinding blizzard....
The Company halted suddenly.... Stones began to fall from the mountain-side, whistling over their heads, or crashing on the path beside them. Every now and again they heard a dull rumble, as a great boulder rolled down from hidden heights above....
‘It is no good going on. Only a little higher, if I remember rightly, this path leaves the cliff and runs into a wide shallow trough at the bottom of a long hard slope. We should have no shelter there from snow, or stones — or anything else.'
'And it is no good going back while the storm holds,' said Aragorn. 'We have passed no place on the way up that offered more shelter than this cliff-wall we are under now.'....
The Company now gathered together as close to the cliff as they could. It faced southwards, and near the bottom it leaned out a little, so that they hoped it would give them some protection from the northerly wind and from the falling stones. But eddying blasts swirled round them from every side....

The Journey Begins!
Wow. I see that I made this post a month ago, yet we are only leaving now. We will probably be starting out this afternoon. The trip should take about two days (rather than a month, as it would for the average hobbit on horseback.) We will need to go over Caradhras* using the Redhorn Pass** which is always a little worrisome to me because the weather can get pretty extreme there. If we leave today we shouldn't encounter any snowstorms on the pass though.
*Siskiyou Mountains between CA and OR, **Siskiyou Pass
(The above picture is not my art. I got the picture from this article.)
I'm going to be posting erratically for the next two weeks (I think?) I am leaving the land of Mordor for the Shire, and am trying very hard to avoid the Nazgul. Wish me luck.
(Here "Mordor" refers to California, and "The Shire" refers to the state of Washington. "The Nazgul" refer to the highway patrol.)

Okay, just one more note on my current LOTR re-read (for now).
When the Fellowship is stuck on Caradhras, Gandalf abbacadabbras some of that mystical Rivendell liquid that gives everybody extra stamina or whatever. (Okay, so he actually got it out of his pack, whatever).
Anyway, Gandalf tells everyone to pass the flask around so they can all benefit from its strengthening properties. And I just want to imagine between the lines here and envision Gimli and Legolas having a spat about refusing to drink after an Elf/Dwarf (depending on whoever went first). And finally Aragorn or Boromir or Gandalf gets so fed up and exasperated at them that they have to intervene and keep them in line like stubborn bratty children.

Various inhabitants of rivendell
(inspired by @thesummerestsolstice here and here)
#silm#silmarillion#lotr#rivendell#maglor#erestor#i hope you do not mind me borrowing garthaglir like a particularly cool rock on the playground#i imagine glorfindels arrival at rivendell like#he walks into the library and runs into garthaglir#both of them scream#but then later glorfindel sat him down and taught him to do fancy braids#now they are friends#later he was part of the redhorn pass search and rescue team out of loyalty to the people who took him in#(bonus points if he was originally a caradhras orc...)#he has joined glorfindel in Team Hair Down During Battle and elrond is so tired#although later he teaches elrond the local dialect of black speech#they spend weeks in the library transcribing texts and poring over the etymology of particularly quenya-derived words#orcs are kind of undead (see: aure entuluva battle) and elrond is weird and somewhat maiarin#somebody eventually forces them to go take a break after three weeks of nonstop linguistics-bonding#feanors ghost is Proud#(he also is glad that erestor eventually befriended lindir because hey! thats one grandkid who didnt disown everyone)#the one old feanorion and thingols guard both refuse to modernize their armor#elrohir is like 'you know mail is a thing now right?? leg armor has existed for two ages and youre still wearing your fancy battle robes'#to which both of them will yell something only vaguely understandable about modern armor being poorly made#and then proceed to fight about whose armor was actually more effective at the dagor nuin giliath#(theyre that old)
