Like some fic had been marinating for over 20 years in my head before seeing the light, so did these "monkehs" here.

And yeh, I know there may be some differences between what each RL monkey & ape look like and what's in the pic. But here's the catch: only one of them is from Earth. 😏

Original idea was to recall those sort of movie posters with the BEEG™ looming baddie in the background and the rest of the cast in the foreground. Alas, I realised way too late that I did a whoopsie when arranging the several ref poses. 🙈

Profiles in Villainy

Lord Nebula

A sentient black hole whose singular quest is to consume the entire universe and remake it in his own image, Lord Nebula is all but the personification of galactic evil.  He has enslaved civilizations throughout the galaxy.  He forces his captors to search out the quantum theory of gravity, the anti-force that he believes will bring about the ‘big crunch,’ compressing all of space and time within a singularity.   

Opposing this diabolical and destructive scheme has been Captain Simian and his band of intrepid Space Monkeys.  These heroes have managed to stymie the cosmic cad’s efforts and Lord Nebula has made it a priority to seek out these interloping primates and destroy them.  Thus far, these effort have been in vain and Captain Simian and the Space Monkeys have stayed a step ahead, constantly thwarting the villain’s plots.

Actor Michael Dorn provides the voice for Lord Nebula with the villain first appearing in the second episode of Captain Simian and the Space Monkeys, airing on September 7th, 1996.

I had such a tricky time picking the third character. It was originally going to be one of the Biker Mice From Mars, but then I remembered that Ryan Reynolds in bringing them back.

In case anyone ever doubted there was still a lot of *serious* drugs running around in the early 1990's... Try Captain Simian.

Absolutely batshit insane cartoon of about 24+/- episodes that is like...fanfiction's fanfiction. There are classic plots from TOS that was twisted almost out of shape and drenched in sarcasm and re-scripted for this show. There are sly, lightning-swift homages to Douglas Adams. The Incredible Hulk. King Kong. Japanese monster films. NASA's less well-thought-out (and real) attempts to beat the space race with live animal experiments. ALIEN. Some suspiciously BATTLESTAR GALACTICA like space dogfights. Doctor Who's attitude to physics and space travel...Star Wars, A SPACE ODYSSEY...what I'm almost positive is a little geekery at Disney's THE BLACK HOLE. Captain Simian is such a classic parody of William Shatner's Kirk it transcends poetry, dammit. When actual real science fiction language and science pops in, it almost scares the hell out of you.

And Yes, so much attitude about all those PLANET OF THE APES films.

Michael Dorn is the voice of the sentient black hole that seeks to suck up the universe and reboot it...He isn't the only recognizable voice actor but honestly, my brain just sort of collapsed when I realized the writers had actually scripted a scene where a chimp THROWS HIS POO AT ALIENS AND THE CENSORS MISSED IT.

Monster Lovers, Assemble!

Reader gets kidnapped by an alien (Rhesus 2) that mistakes her for one of the most intelligent humans on the planet and wants to take her brain.

Reader gets rescued by the Space Monkeys, who still hold some small grudge against humans but learn that not everyone is the same. Reader, on the other hand, learns that she can't get home so soon and decides to follow the team and try to find her spot in the crew.

Unwanted Visitors (rated M for a mentioned, attempted sexual assault) Fandom: Stardew Valley Characters: Mostly Melly (own farmer) and Elliot (canon) Summary: Melly's ex decides to pay a visit during Pelican Town's annual fair, much to the farmer's chagrin. The fic is one and a half years old now, and apparently also one of the most appreciated in my AO3, with the current count of " Kudos: 83 Bookmarks: 8 Hits: 987" To me it still sparks joy because I feel like I found a way to make a(n alleged) softie like Elliot look absolutely intimidating (for a good cause). ===

Let's Brawl Fair And Square (just a general rating) Fandom: Iron Leaguer Characters: Magnum Ace, Gold Foot, and Killer Brothers (all canon) Summary: I just wanted to give a "Babyface" one good reason to finally deck both Killer Brothers~ The fic was originally posted somewhere in my Tumblr eons ago, some time after I was done with the OVA of that anime. Later I tweaked the whole text, mostly to fix whatever butchering I may have done +10 years prior, and then re-uploaded it onto my AO3. ===

The Good, The Bad, And The Monkey (rated T mostly due to some mild-but-maybe-not-so-mild language being used) Fandom: Captain Simian & the Space Monkeys Characters: The entirety of Simian's crew (canon) + The entirety of my own crew of blorbos Summary: "Charlie" gets tricked real nice into retrieving some whimsical shard. I'm particularly proud of this fic for one reason: sitting at 13 chapters and with nearly 24k words counted, it's the longest I've ever written thus far. And I know AO3 says that it's 14 chapters, but the last one is actually dedicated to a list of fun facts. ===

Tough Luck (another general rating) Fandom: Warframe Characters: Mostly Amir Beckett (canon) and a trio of Drifters (personal blorbos) Summary: After a failed mission, a small bunch of Drifters take matters (and a single, jittery Hex) into their hands. This is a fic where I wanted Amir to have his widdle moment of badassery. The moment of "huggus & kissus" has been a nice extra. And then... I had absolutely no idea how to end it, until I said "feck it" and just slapped that ending out of the blue. 😂 ===

Intruder Alert (rated T for mild language; also includes a small CW for implied body dysphoria) Fandom: Warframe, yet again Characters: Mostly the entire team of Hex (canon) + Jun (blorbo) Summary: Seeking one last chance of a safe refuge, Jun manages to sneak into what she believed to be Höllvania very abandoned central mall. Surprise, bish~! Idk, I liked the idea of a "Warframen't 1999" timeline, where Drifters would be yet to be seen around. Or maybe just a timeline between a time travel and another. Yeah, I haven't really decided on this. All I know is that there's no Drifter (nor their Warframes) involved in this very canon divergent story. This one also comes with some kind of sequel going by the title "Broken" (rated T mostly for different flavours of trauma + the use of "the R slur").

Rhesus 2's Brain Puns

I'm already doing this for the wiki, but I'm gonna post some of my personal favorite highlights of Rhesus 2's brain puns from Captain Simian & the Space Monkeys. I won't/can't post all (partially because I waffle on how much of his brain-based body horror I think people could handle, and partially because some work best as gifs - which I don't know how to make), but I'll do my best.

Malcolm McDowell was having such a blast voicing Rhesus, I can just tell. So much wicked glee, it's absolutely infectious!

But again, brain-based body horror included! Exposed brains, disembodied brains, spinal cords/brain stems, the works! It's a children's cartoons, but if that stuff still makes you upset, please don't trouble yourself!

Starting with Episodes 1 and 2: "Yes, We Have No Bananas" and "Yes, We Still Have No Bananas":

Our first glimpse into Rhesus 2's brain puns, and it's a fantastic one. We had just seen him replace his own brain the scene prior, and here he is taking it out already just to go buck-wild and have evil fun!

Rhesus 2 is voiced by Malcolm McDowell, who played Alex DeLarge in A Clockwork Orange (the show makes a number of references to it with Rhesus 2's character, all amusing). His delivery & laughter with this line in particular is stuck in my own brain, it's so joyous and honestly kind of cute!

"And so is my spare~". Tickles me.

Alas, I can't make a gif, but maybe I'll learn how or get someone else to for the sake of this show. It deserves it, dammit!

It's so simple, so low-hanging, it circles right back around to amazing. I don't want to throw around the word "camp" too flippantly, but I feel like this is at least somewhere in the ballpark.

He didn't need to swap his brain out, he had already decided against retreating! He's just doing it for the sake of the bit! And I love that commitment! And the delivery of that line - so sinister, so saucy, it gives me tingles~
