Here you go - Chapter Thirteen - Twilight Dancing with a Princess

Excerpt:

Steeling himself, Link sucks in a breath and holds it as he quickly wraps his hand around the handle. It’s warm in his grip, pulsing with a strange energy that flows through his veins, filling him with sudden vigor. He holds it out over the desk, testing the weight and balance. It’s perfectly crafted, as if it had been forged and molded specifically for him. 

Turning, Link brandishes the weapon in front of him, giving it a few practice swings. It sings like a bird as it slices through the air, and feels just as light. He lunges forward. “Hi-yah!”

Tabs jumps onto the back of the chair, his hackles raised and tail bristling. His mouth draws back revealing his sharp teeth and he emits a low, malicious growl.

“It’s just a sword, Tabs,” Link chuckles, but even as he says the words, he knows it’s far more than that.

Synopsis: Down on his luck pirate, Link thinks his ship has come in when the fallen King Gustaf Harkinian implores him and his crew to rescue his daughter, Zelda, before she's forced to wed the usurper of the crown, Ganondorf Dragmire. Link isn’t as interested in a princess, all prim, proper, and boring as he is in obtaining treasure beyond his wildest dreams. However his tune quickly changes when he sees her. Too bad she thinks he’s a dirty rotten scoundrel.

Link Araki, confident pirate captain of the King of Red Lions, has only ever sought comfort, security, and riches for his men. But when an exiled king and a sassy princess step into his life, he is swept away on a journey of daring sea battles, dangerous adventures, and love in unexpected places. This story has one of my favorite characterizations of the Hero that we have come to know and love. Charming, sassy, and a little bit cocky, he is a perfect match for the capable princess who seems to be able to thwart him at every turn. There is action, there is romance, and there is a spirit of adventure that gets right down to the heart of the story of the Legend of Zelda. Amazing fic, and I can’t wait to read more! -abbyz-elda

Daring, bold, and witty! Captain Link Araki is a story that grabs you from the start and doesn't let go! I love seeing Link in a different sort of spotlight as one of Hyrule's most wanted pirates, and Zelda is portrayed with equal amounts grace and spunk, holding her own against Link's antics. Expaning Hyrule Bingo!

This is a little challenge put out by the @expanding-hyrule community to bring some fics to the spotlight that feature an original Link and Zelda with an original Hyrule.

D5: Break the Wheel by RandombutLoved is a heartbreaking story of a Zelda who is tired of being in the reincarnation cycle and decides to take matters into her own hands. Absolutely wonderful writing!

E5: Similar to Break the Wheel, No More. Not One Single Time More by @karama9 is a deeply emotional and tragic telling of a Link who decides he’s going to fight back, whose rage is fueled by the many Links that came before him.

Chained Truth by @mirensiart. I know this is sort of a given since it's a really popular one, but I was shown this one by a Discord friend a while back as well! It's got fun dynamics and designs. ^^

A2 - A Genre I Don't Usually Read

A Link to the Stars by @coffebits and @abbyzwrites. Another popular one! I don't read sci fi AUs of fantasy stories very often, but the art and designs are wonderful! (And Abby's writing style is charming as always)!

A3 - Caught Up on Work

Divine Gemstones by @twist-dg has wonderful art so far and a really neat premise! And I always have a soft spot for Zelda-centric stories! Give the girl some love! (Also, the Hylia design in this AU is GORGEOUS)! I made sure to follow so I can keep up with it as it releases. :)

A4 - An Incomplete Project

Alternate Triforce by @doomed-era has a wonderful art style and such fun designs! I had quite a few other boxes it could check on top of this one, but that'd be cheating. It's got a really neat concept and an ongoing comic on top of that! I'll always have a deep respect for those who can keep up a comic, it's so much work.

A5 - I Made an Original Legends Work!

I've made a few Original Legends, but I only have one that's posted and "completed" (although I have bonus stuff in the works right now)! The Princess's Heart by @loz-untold-myths is an in-universe fairytale I made for Zelink Week 2024. It follows a love story between Link and Zelda amidst the rise of a calamity!

B3 - Picked Because of the Synopsis

Remnants of the Past by @justapixelthing is one I've been following for a while too! I always love AUs where Link stays in OoT's adult timeline, especially when it's expanded to the incarnations of Zelda and Link after!

C1 - A Familiar Creator

Captain Link Araki and the Harbinger of Destiny by @mistresslrigtar. From what I've seen of it thus far, this story is full of fun character interactions and you can really see the development as the story progresses! ^^

Sea of Prophecy by @cherrysalsa is the one I've been following the longest! It has an interesting take on a modern setting and a fun cast of characters. ^^ I'm really excited to see where it goes!!

Monthly Update!

Chapter Twelve: Link Claims the Skyward Sword

The snippet below is one of the first scenes that came to me when this story was no more than a budding idea: a pirate captain characterization for Link and a few lines of dialogue (highlighted in orange).

“No one is touching that sword!” A venomous voice rings through the temple, followed by an ominous gust of wind that stirs the leaves to swirl up from the floor. The previously cooing pigeons that have returned to roost in the eaves take flight with a frantic flapping of their wings. 

Looking up from his inspection, Link sees Ganondorf blocking the only exit from the sacristy. Shit. The blood drains from Link’s face and his heart begins thrumming loudly in his ears. How the hell did he find them? “Oh, for all that’s holy.”

A malicious grin splits Ganondorf’s face and his hooded eyes practically glow in their sockets. He seems unconcerned by Groose and Niko’s retreat, as he pulls a very large, wickedly sharp blade and strides toward Link The tip of the claymore drags along the stone-tiled floor, sending up a shower of sparks in its wake. 

Tamping down the fear coursing through his veins, Link squares his shoulders and raises his cutlass. “Come on, we don’t have all day here for fireworks.” 

“You are no match to me, boy,” Ganondorf warns, amber eyes glinting with evil intent.

He’ll show Ganondorf a thing or two. “Uh, full grown man. Not a boy. Are you trying to give me a complex?”

4. total number of words you wrote this year

Oh, this is hard math because I forgot to keep totals when I started and how much edits have added. So roughly:

GoS: 100k finishing it + ~20k so far in edits

MoaH: ~10k in editing the first 23 chapters + 800k new words written in the omnibus

For roughly 930k so far. I'm aiming for a million before the year's out. I got 150k last month with Nano, so I think I'll make it.

12. favorite character to write about this year

I lied, I wanna do this one again. Can we talk about MoaH Zelda because oh my god I love her! What a legend. She is amazing, I would never be able to meet her, she's terrifyingly intense.

15. something you learned this year

More life lessons? From me? Sure.

There is only one wrong way to create and that is to not create anything. A bad first draft is still better than nothing being made at all.

19. any new fics to start next year

Well, book 2 of MoaH will start releasing, but I'm on track to start writing book 4 pretty shortly into the year. And at current pace, probably hit 5, 6, & 7 next year too. Plus hopefully a GoS pause to get my other three imported over.

Reading wise, I've got a list as I'm working through the EH TBR. Adjustments as more works are added to EH, of course. That's a lot of links to grab, forgive me in directing folks to @expanding-hyrule's archives instead of linking them all again here.

28. longest fic you read this year

I think the longest fic I read this year was Hero by @karama9. I've been saving most of the longer fics on the EH TBR for later though, so my early next year is stacked with some heavy hitters and I'm super looking forward to it. Longest comic was yours, @alternate-triforce. Both works with high recommendations.

I decided to post this early since today is the doldrums. Enjoy!

Link admits he’d love nothing more than to sweep her off her feet with his music, but not like this. He’d imagined playing her a love song or a lullaby, not the song that has become more insistent with each passing moment, playing on repeat in the back of his head. He shakes his head. “No. Make someone else pull the sword.”

“That’s not how it works!” Zelda’s voice rises in desperation. “Only the one who hears the sword can wield it!”

“That’s a ridiculous rule! What if the Hero doesn’t want to be one?” Link retorts, whirling around to glare at her. 

“The Hero in the stories embraces the role! It’s supposed to be an honor!” Zelda argues, two bright red spots appear on her cheeks.

“Well, I’m no storybook hero and I want no part in this!” Link growls, suddenly feeling nauseous at the thought. “I’ve heard those fairytales, same as you, and most of them don’t end in the Hero’s favor. Dying for the glory of Hyrule? No thanks. What good is it being a savior if you’re not around to reap the rewards?”

Chapter Thirteen - Twilight Dancing with a Princess (for those of you who need a zelink fix, next update Monday, January 20!)

Snippet:

When he cracks his eyes open to get his bearings, the bright white light of the sun streaming through the once dingy window brings tears to his eyes. The room begins spinning, his stomach lurches and he feels like he’s lost his sea legs. 

An angel, wearing a golden halo is wringing out the cloth in a chipped basin sitting on a nearby table. The water trickles into the bowl, and his breath hitches in his throat when her profile briefly comes into focus. It’s only been a matter of days, but he’s memorized the slightly up-turned nose and curve of her cheeks.

Zelda.

Link closes his eyes before she turns back and struggles to make sense of it all. Only when he feels her fingers gently brush his hair away from his face does it strike him. This must be a dream or…there’s only one other explanation. He’s died and gone to heaven.
