A time-travelling bounty hunter with an implied attraction to the Inspector? Why not bring back Captain James Haggard?
I guess the show runner didn’t want to trigger the audience with full-on homosexual situations.

You stood in the back corner of the Black Pearl's deck, arms crossed as you leaned against the ebony wood. You stared at James as he swayed and stumbled, standing near the edge of the ship; looking sick from all the alcohol he ingested. He looked awful. Brown hair messy and tangled, put into a ponytail on his head. Outfit in complete ruins, ripped and haggard. His skin, dirty of sweat and grime… He was no longer the Commodore he used to be. Nor was he the man you used to know.
There was an off tension in the air, no one on the ship spoke. Or, more importantly, no one had spoken to James since he "joined" the crew. Not Will, not Jack, and not even Elizabeth. Which you found odd. You thought out of everyone, besides yourself, that she'd speak to him.
Well, you couldn't really say anything. Since his arrival… You hadn't said a word to him either.
You wanted to say something… Anything. James had been your friend. A long time ago. You had met as children, spending most of your time together. It wasn't all sunshine and rainbows though, when you were younger you had been kidnapped by pirates. And with some sort of luck, they didn't kill you. The Captain, Barbossa, surprisingly had mercy, and trained you.
For the next couple of years, you were trained in the ways of becoming a pirate. You had also gone through a lot, Barbossa became a sort of father figure for you, and even for a while, you, Barbossa, and the crew were trapped under a curse. But you much preferred it to your old life of a daughter of a nobleman; trapped with teas and dresses. The only thing you missed from your old life was your friend James. You missed talking to him… You missed his smile; his laugh.
And yet, here he was. Only a few feet from you and you were too scared to go over to him. He hadn't even realized you were there no doubt. And your mind was racing as to what he might say. Would he be happy to see you? Or the opposite? Would he even remember you?
But as your mind was racing with what he could say, it was also racing with insecurity. You had heard from your times at sea, with Jack, Will, and Elizabeth… That the man in question had been engaged or betrothed to Elizabeth for some time. When you had first heard of it, you felt faint. That was when you realized you were still in love with your old best friend.
You wondered if James loved Elizabeth the way you loved him. If he truly cared for her as Will cared truly for her. You felt foolish for hoping he could possibly return your hidden feelings. You felt foolish for wanting the attention of the man, the man you hadn't seen in years.
Swallowing hard and gaining your courage, you pushed off the wall and walked over to him. Leaning against the wooden railing of the Pearl, you stared at James as he stared down at the water below. Seemingly too drunk to realize you were right there.
You bit your lip briefly, not really knowing what to say, "James."
The man snapped his gaze up to you, his eyes widening, his eyes looking over your figure before they narrowed slightly. "You're a pirate?" He asked, spatting in hatred at the word.
You tilted your head to the side, "No hello? It's been years, James."
He scoffed, looking back at the water, "It has been years. Years since you got up and left with no goodbye or explanation."
You pursed your lips, furrowing your eyebrows in confusion. "I didn't just get up and leave, James. I was captured by Barbossa and his men."
He huffed, "How are you alive then? If you cared about our friendship at all, you would've come back." He lifted the rum in his hand to his lips, tilting his head back to take a large sip.
You sputtered out a breathy sigh, you knew he was drunk but this was ridiculous, "I was raised by them to become a pirate. Barbossa spared my life. So I am grateful. And you know how much I care about you and our friendship, if I could've I would've come back." You practically scolded him, as he turned to stare hard at you.
"Then why didn't you?" He asked and you opened your mouth, but closed it again, and that was all James had to see. "That's what I thought." He chugged more rum.
Growling softly, you glared at him as you grabbed the rum bottle from him abruptly, before tossing it over the side of the ship. James stared as the bottle splashed into the water, before sinking.
"Well, that's just a waste." He muttered, before swaying slightly again, almost losing his footing as the ship moved.
"Look at you," You continue to scold, "Drunk and washed out. What happened to the young boy who I used to know? What happened to you that made you so bitter hearted?"
James turned to look back at you, "You. You left and my life went on. Do you know how worried I was? I asked my father where you had gone and he never gave me an answer, telling me that you were a distraction from my education." He ranted angrily. “Good riddance.” He scoffed.
You threw your hands in the air slightly, "I couldn't help that I got captured! I was eleven, James!" He grunted and turned back to the water once more, making you cross your arms, "You're drunk. It's pointless speaking with you when you're like this. If you ever cared about our friendship at all, come find me when you're sober."
Night fell upon the horizon, stars sprinkled the dark sky as the bright moon shines down upon you. You couldn't sleep. Not even a wink. Every time you tried to, you'd close your eyes and see James. Remembering your time with him. Running through gardens, sword fighting with sticks, watching the stars before your father called you back inside. You wished you could remember more of your childhood, but after so many years… It was becoming a blur of greens and blues.
You almost felt guilty. You wished that you were able to see James grow up… And grow up along-side him. You wished you could've seen when he became Commodore, knowing that was a proud moment in his book. You could almost see it. Two rows of men with their swords pointed to the sky, creating a hall for him to walk through. Even though you hated the British Crown, you were proud of him nonetheless.
The moon seemed to smile down at you, but you couldn't smile back. Your hands gripped the ebony wood railing tightly as you stared at the dark waters below. Your mind ran with "what ifs" and what could've been.
The stars, they reminded you so much of James. Possibly from all the times you stargazed together in your mother's garden, but you could almost remember, or visualize, how the stars reflected in his stormy eyes. It was foolish to think what you felt back then was love… But, you couldn't help but think it was.
Hearing the soft creaks of the floorboards, you turned your head to find James. He stood there, almost awkwardly, as he looked anywhere but at you. It was silent, only the sound of the soft sea crashing against the ship made any noise.
"I am sorry, Y/N." He finally spoke up, voice unsteady. You listened quietly, patiently. "What I had said to you was out of line."
You hummed, nodding. "I wish our reunion didn't start off as such." You pursed your lips as you stared up at the moon. "It wasn't what I had in mind."
"What did you have in mind?" James asked, coming to stand beside you, mimicking your stance with his hands on the railing.
"I don't know." You sighed tiredly. "I don't know what to think anymore."
It was silent once more as the two of you stared at the moon… Like you used to. There was an odd tension in the air between you too, but nonetheless it was peaceful. Almost relieving even. To know he was alive and by your side once more.
James worried on his bottom lip, side glancing at you briefly before looking back at the moon. He had missed you, there was no doubt about that, but he wished things were different. Looking over at you again, he watched as the moon's soft rays cast sweet shadows over your face, almost making your skin sparkle in its light. You were radiant; stunning.
In his time without you, he thought of you often. He always wondered what happened to you. And he grieved for a long time before he got swept into his duties. He had always wondered, if you were alive, what you would look like. And his image of you didn't do you justice. You were an angel, a Goddess among me. If he had the chance, and you hadn't been captured, he would've married you.
He took notice of how your nose sloped, and your hair blew slightly in the soft breeze. You have changed since he lost you all those years ago. You weren't wearing those dresses -- wearing flowy trousers, a billowy blouse with puffy sleeves, and a thick corset. If anything, you screamed pirate. Something he was told to hate, track down, and capture… If not kill.
He felt terrible for what he had said to you, he felt terrible for his drunk ramblings. He was broken, hardly the man you once knew as a child. He wasn't as care-free anymore. Nor was he as caring. Growing up had changed him. Losing his rank had changed him. Becoming a pirate changed him.
Licking his lips, he opened his mouth to speak, "Remember when we used to dance, you used to stand on my feet?" He asked, voice thick and deep as he looked back at the moon.
"Yes…" You answered softly, smiling lightly at the thought. "I remember quite well."
"You had two left feet, if I remember correctly. Never knew how to dance properly." James spoke with a hint of a grin, as you giggled lightly; music to his ears. Out of everything, your laugh never changed.
"I still don't, well not really anyway. Ballroom dancing isn't really my forte." You laughed out breathily.
James turned to you to raise an eyebrow, "You never learned?" He asked and you shook your head, turning to look at him in return.
"No time to really learn when you're out at sea." You shrugged, and James nodded slowly, pondering for a moment before he offered his hand to you. You looked at his hand, to his eyes and back. "James?"
"Dance with me. You said you never have time, why not now?" He asked, giving you a small smile as you stared at him in surprise. At your silence, he began to worry, "Just like old times?" He added, and you bit your lip, hesitantly placing your soft hand in his calloused one.
Pulling you closer to him, James placed his hand on your waist, his other holding your hand in the air beside you both. Your hand slipped over his tattered old uniform, resting on his shoulder. You looked into his eyes, seeing that he was already staring at you.
"James…" You began but he interrupted.
"Just follow my lead." He began, before giving you a small smirk, "Just don't step on my toes."
You bit your lip as you nodded your head slightly, "I'll try not to. But no promises."
As James began to move, you stared down at your boots and his, trying to make sure not to mess up or step on his toes. Feeling his hand leave your waist, James placed his finger underneath your chin, raising your head to look at him. "Keep your eyes on me. Trust the beat."
You gulped lightly, "There is no beat. Nor any music."
"Humor me, darling." You flushed at his endearment, as he placed his hand back on your waist. "Just look at me, and listen to the beat."
You listened, staring into his stormy eyes as you listened to the soft thumps of your boots against the wood.
Daa da da. Daa da da. Daa da da.
You were entirely swept up in the dance, completely forgetting where you were, the world around you slipping away until it was only you and James. You had dreamed about this once. A long time ago. Dancing with the man before you, though in your head he was clean shaven and his hair and attire were not a mess. But, you didn't mind. This… This right here was far better than any dream you could possibly have.
James couldn't help but stare, letting his eyes rake over your features as you danced with him under the moonlight. He noticed the soft freckles that dotted your nose, and the way your lashes danced upon the apples of your cheeks. The nervousness you had felt and he had seen seemed to wash away, as you let yourself relax and smile. Breathtaking. He thought. Incredibly so.
You both slowed to a stop, your breathing only being slightly altered as you stared into his eyes. You felt so overwhelmed. Overwhelmed with the happiness and love you felt for James.
"I haven't danced… I haven't danced since we were children." You confessed, voice only slightly above a whisper.
"No one to dance with?" He asked, and you softly shook your head.
"No," You began, closing your eyes. "No… I could've had plenty of dance suitors." You felt your hand tighten in his as your hand on his shoulder fiddled with the color of his old uniform. "Only none of them were you."
James stood still, shocked by your statement; feeling his face and neck flush. You both stayed frozen in the dance stance, you feeling as embarrassed as you thought was possible, and James feeling as surprised and bewildered as he ever had been.
"And I know I can't possibly have your heart." You muttered, shaking your head as you looked down. "I had seen the way you looked at Elizabeth and I had heard of your prior engagement."
James let out a sigh, dropping your hand which sent your heart to your stomach briefly before both of his hands cupped your cheeks, his calloused thumbs brushing across your cheeks. He stared down at you, his gaze piercing as he tried to think of what to say. And you stared back, desperately wanting something… Some sort of explanation.
"It is true. I was priorly engaged to Elizabeth. But that is in the past now. Our engagement was arranged by her father." He licked his lip, "And yes, I did have affection towards her." Your heart was barely afloat. "But she was never you." He confessed, surprising you this time as you stared up at him with wide eyes. "She never snuck off with me to a garden after tea time, she never stargazed with me past curfew, and she never had my heart. You stole it the moment I meant you.."
You sucked in a breath, heart beating rapidly in your chest. "What?" You breathed. He was silent for a short while before he smiled softly at you as he lowered his hands from your face. His fingers trailed down to your jawline, the tips of his thumbs brushing your bottom lip.
"I love you." He said, bringing his forehead close to yours. "I'm sorry for the pain and confusion I've caused you."
Your eyes widened, tears pooling at the corners. He loves me? He loves me?! You thought, blinking hard as you tried to fight back your feelings, but you were unsuccessful. "You love me..?" You whispered, as he closed his eyes and leaned forward, his warm lips meeting yours.
As you kissed back, it was like nothing you'd ever experienced. It was like fire. Like fireworks. Like the wind blowing through the trees as they danced with each other, their leaves rustling in the night sky as they twirled around each other and disappeared among the stars. He wrapped his arms around your waist tightly, pulling you closer to him as you moved your free hand up to stroke his bread-covered cheek. You were dizzy. You were intoxicated.
The kiss broke and you pulled apart, gasping slightly for air as you continued to stare into his blue eyes. He smiled at you, as your hand wandered his cheeks, stroking his beard gently; it tickled against your palm. His arms tightened around you and you lost yourself in the blissful euphoria of the moment. There was no more pain or sorrow between you. Just joy and adoration.
"I love you, adore you, darling," James whispered, leaning forwards to press his forehead against yours again, closing his eyes as he sighed happily. "More than words can express."
A tear fell from your eye as you buried your face into his chest. His arms wrapped securely around you as he rocked you gently, his hand stroking your back soothingly. "I love you too." You whispered quietly as you closed your eyes.
The warmth radiating off of his body brought you comfort and peace. You wanted to stay there forever; with him, in his arms. He rested his head on top of yours, listening to your soft breathing as he pulled you tighter to him, his nose pressing against your head, as you smiled to yourself. You would never let go. Never again.

landfall: chapter 7
On a bright fateful morn, Jack Sparrow brings rumors of the Black Pearl and her crew of the damned to Port Royal. In theory, the ship should be no match for the dragon Tempest and his Captain Norrington — but the Pearl harbors dangerous shadows of her own. ✦ potc + temeraire crossover, 3k words. now complete!
That afternoon, Estrella fetches Elizabeth to Captain Norrington’s home, tucked up the hill from the beach. While Elizabeth would rather not tread upon his kindness any further, his small household is prepared to receive a dragon at a time when the fort is not, and must become the place of deliberation.
The moment James steps into the courtyard behind his home, his creased and dusty dress coat folded over his arm, he is assailed with three simultaneous exclamations:
“What news?” says Governor Swann.
“Did they catch the pirates?” says Elizabeth.
“Is Tempest well?” says Scylla.
“A moment, and I will explain all,” he says, voice strained and expression haggard. The Swanns straighten and quiet down, listening intently, leaned forward in various states of anxiety.

WTNV quick rundown - 145 - The Veterans
Featuring the voice of Mark Gagliardi as as John Peters (you know, the farmer?)!
Read the rest of my rundowns here, including live show and novel rundowns.
Fake it till you make it. Mic it till you like it. Book it till you look it. Welcome to Night Vale.
More Veterans from the Blood/Space War have arrived, landing in John Peters (you know, the farmer?) field. This includes John's brother, James Peters as well as Admiral Junior Blais, Sergeant Dan Christensen and his twin brother Drew. They say that the galaxy is under threat by the ruthless Polonian armies of Star System Lacaille 9352 and that's what they're fighting the war about.
The Polonian's are three times the size of humans with hundreds of sharp teeth up and down their boneless limbs. They have only one eye which gives them bad depth perception but it also shoots lazers. They have already completely destroyed the planet of a species which only speaks via dance - two members of which accompany the human veterans and are allies to them in the war.
There is an extremely lackluster attempt at supporting the financial, emotional and physical burden these veterans carry.
Senior Strategic Advisor Jameson Archibald at the Intergalactic Military Headquarters admits that he still has no idea what the Blood/Space war is about and lost all the money he kept getting from the government and not using in an intergalatic war in a faulty tech start up. Donations from the Bake Sale and Sheriff's Secret Police are received gratefully but since the Polonian's are so close he decides that it's probably too late. He then rolls up a $100 and eats it like a Snickers bar.
The Polonian ships are now visible in the sky. Harrison Kip sends Cecil and e-mail stating that in 1993 he found crashed ships that look exactly like the ones in the sky which had corpses of creatures matching the Polonian's in them whilst out on an unrelated exhibition. He was then reprogrammed to forget it but seeing them has recovered some of the memories and he feels he can recover the rest. However, he is then reprogrammed again and forgets it all. Cecil is then also reprogrammed for talking about it.
Luckily it seems the army of Polonian ships simply vanishes anyway. There one moment, gone the next.
Weather: “No Good Day” by Windows to Sky
Dan and Drew were born in 1912, both became tax accountants, had wives and children, donated to the Old NV opera house and were avid sports fans - even starting the first ever semi-pro Sand Hockey league. Dan passed away in 1994 due to liver cancer and Drew died of a heart attack a week later. Despite this both men when they return look to be in their late 20's and are entirely unable to reconnect with their middle-aged grandchildren or get jobs due to being legally dead.
Junior Blais, who is 50, says he was born in 2022 (this episode was written in 2019) to Oliver and Linda Blais both of who say they don't plan on having children making him either an accident or dramatic change of heart. He was badly wounded and has many 3rd degree burns that require grafts but clearance for them in NV involves getting clearance in Red Mesa and it's taking forever.
Jim Peters was honourable discharged from service and is decorated with many chevrons and medals. John Peters tells us that his brother used to play catch with him and show him where to get discounts on sweets and drinks. John is now 60 and was only 15 when his brother left, Jim is 22. John wants his brother to stay but Jim says that The General has a plan that will work and that they need him. John makes an attempt to make him stay but knows it won't work. Jim dons his space suit and leaves, already haggard with the horrors of war.
Meanwhile the NV Scorpions, the wheelchair basketball team that Janice is captain of, won their semi-final game against Cactus Park HS. They will playing Pine Cliff Saturday afternoon. City Council says that win or lose they will hold a parade next Tuesday for the team which will feature a celebrity appearance by Lee Marvin who is turning 30 that week.
A large chunk of the moon is destroyed by the Polonians but City Council just plans to buy a new one.
Reprogramming is done by men in camo-suits using some kind of metal hat full of wires and such.
Stay tuned next for simultaneous panic and relief as you realize all of your emails are gone.  Good night , Night Vale. Good night.
Proverb: Develop your chi. Really work that chi hard. Get six-pack chi. Totally swole with chi. Roll up those sleeves and welcome people to the chi show.

Queer books, day 13/30
Tumblr media
All right, ready to dive back into the seedy world of M/M romance novels after yesterday's unnecessarily heartfelt diversion?
This book is like...James Bond meets and shags a Jewish Oscar Wilde. Also there's some plot about blackmail. It's set in the middle of the belle époque, so right around 1900, at a time when many noble families suddenly realized that they weren't quite as wealthy as they once had been but were still saddled with large country houses, trendy London homes, big payrolls, etc. (This is also the plot of Downton Abbey.)
Anyway, one thing I enjoy about KJ Charles is that she writes Jewish characters into her stuff. The first one I came across, in Band Sinister, was only a side character, but...I had this sudden revelation that I didn't really ever see Jews represented in fiction that wasn't set around WWII. In the same way one could get the sense that there are no queer people before Stonewall except for Walt Whitman and Oscar Wilde, it's weirdly easy to get the feeling that Jews only really existed from about 1929 to 1946. (And in the works of Michael Chabon and the film The Big Lebowski, which is the best film ever.)
Daniel da Silva is the Jewish character here--yes, he's Sephardic, which is both accurate for migration patterns (England got a bunch of Jews following the Spanish Inquisition) and unusual in itself, as Jews seem to be primarily northern European when portrayed in fiction. He's a poet and a spy, brilliant and mercurial, not much of a fighter but very good at what he does. He meets a guy named Captain Archie Curtis, who is a war vet who lost several fingers to a poorly manufactured gun. They solve a crime (and do sex--did I mention that? a lot of sex).
This is a sendup of Victorian/Edwardian novels like She by H. Rider Haggard--explicitly, Captain Curtis is like the nephew/adopted son of Sir Henry Curtis and his "friend"(?) Captain Good, who are characters in King Solomon's Mines. And it has a lot of tropes, if you are a trope-reading person. We get: big gay awakening, sex or death, arguably a kind of grumpy/sunshine thing, attack lesbians as background characters, and a whole last stand/never tell me the odds type of thing. Also, da Silva comes back in the Will Darling books as an older and wiser man, and I wish we'd gotten more of him.
I read this book last summer during a period of about 54 hours when we didn't have electricity. I should have been saving the power in my phone, but instead I was reading this. Eventually, I took the kids to their grandmother's house (because it was July and 90 degrees, and SHE had power) and finished reading this in her air conditioned guest room. No regrets. 10/10, go read it.

Bucky and Buck, two handsome blue eyed men I can't help but have a weakness for.
Flash Fic #2 (MCU x 911 Crossover)
[Takes place at the end of CA: Winter Soldier]
2014
What the hell.
With tense shoulders, his eyes scan all of the documents being released at large, catching glimpses of names and potential operatives every other second as it flashed by on the screen. He doesn’t recognise any of them, not the ones he is seeing at least, but even so, it fills him with a sense of dread that the fact remains true.
The agency has been compromised.
Eddie, where's Eddie —
“Fuck. Fucking fuck!” For all the times he’s heard the other swear, it has never been with this amount of urgency, which tells him just how screwed up the situation is.
Before the panic could set in, Buck watches as his employer’s hands move even quicker to divert the constant stream of data, separating them into categories his own eyes cannot hope to follow. The display is enough to jolt him out of his shock, and he manages to squeak out a strangled “Tony.“
A hologram popping up in his face answers him back, showing him his husband down at the lobby of the tower, face grim and Christopher in his arms. The man is already armed, a sidepiece clearly visible on his belt, and it fills Buck with a surge of relief to see them safe and unharmed within the building.
They're safe, thank fucking God.
As soon as he comprehends the image, the screen then plays a footage of the captain facing off against an unknown adversary. The change in scenery disorients him, but before he could question it, the video changes to another security camera, and he sees the now unmasked figure running past in a blink.
He already knows what he has to do right as the billionaire tells him, “Find him, Buckaroo.” The older man tosses something at him, and he catches it without a word, trusting that it is in his best interest to just accept it.
This is the man he owes his family's lives to after all.
In the next moment, he breathes out, and his eyes gloss over as the light in the room slowly dims out. JARVIS’ voice chatters in his ear even as the everything else fades away, giving him everything he needs to complete his jump.
Next thing he knows, he’s in some alleyway in Washington, face to face with the Winter Soldier, their two shades of blue meeting in the afterglow of his powers. Unbidden, the voice in his ear reports, “Scan complete. 94% match. New Designation: James Buchanan Barnes.”
His heart thunders at the name, and the cube in his hand glows white.
“Found you.”
2012
“Leave. It’s not safe.”
The haggard voice begs at him, but he doesn’t move to comply. Carefully, Evan passes the needle through the thick skin, holding back his tears as he does. Stitching up injuries had never been a skill he thought he needed to use on someone other than for himself, but he is glad to be of some help to the person he’s looked for most of his life.
“Leave,” the man says again, followed by a string of Russian he does not care to understand. “You’re bleeding – stay still,” he grits out, ignoring the other’s heavy gaze on him.
A gentle hand cups his cheek, and Evan shudders out a gasp as the cool metal touch skin. His eyes however, remain on the wound.
His hands don’t stop moving even then, and only when he is finished closing up the wound does the man attempt to speak to him again. Evan finally looks up at the other, and sees the pain in their eyes as they look at him, struggling to let the words pass his lips, “Thank you.”
Then there’s a light prick to his neck.
He doesn’t remember much after that.
As his consciousness fades away, he faintly cries out to the man without a name, desperation and betrayal lacing his tone. His hands instinctively reach out to touch the other’s face as he tries to commit every minute detail to memory in case they ever meet again, if they ever will.
And then darkness claims him.
Evan does not wake in the morning, and dreams of the other leaving before the day breaks. He dreams of fingers combing through his hair, hears the familiar melody of a lullaby from his childhood, before they both simply vanish and disappear.
When he does awaken, it is with a curse on his lips, frustration boiling under his skin at yet another failed attempt. With a resigned groan, Evan lies himself back down on the bed, and glares at the empty ceiling with a scowl on his lips. His next words echo inside the empty room, with no one but himself to hear.
"You can't run away forever... dad."

The following twenty-four hours pasted by in a blur; Francis reuniting with old acquaintances, travelling to James Clark Ross’s home in Buckinghamshire, meeting his family, endless questioning, eating a hearty meal. Finally, just as he was feeling like his entire body was completely drained and only just managing to avoid sleeping in his clothes by the time he made it to the bedroom Lady Ross had prepared for him; he fell into a deep sleep.
Earlier, he had met with Lady Jane Franklin; trying his best to explain what had happened to her husband but finding himself lost for words. She had promised to meet with him again soon, seeming to understand how weary he was and that he was in no state to get into the particulars of her husband’s passing after the long voyage, especially in front of the large group of people who had gathered around them at the Greenhithe dock.
Then he had even been reunited with Sophia, who seemed almost brought to tears as she looked at the haggard face of the man she once knew. His heart felt a twang of sorrow but he had to admit that the expedition had changed his priorities. The woman seemed like a stranger to him now, he was no longer that love sick man he had been when he joined the expedition. Perhaps something had changed when he had been forced to give up the drink or when he realised that the entirety of the expedition’s survival was now on his shoulders. Either way he had shed that skin many months ago. His heart had been hardened to the woman who had twice rejected him and he didn’t want to even contemplate a third attempt. It seemed like a bad dream now. He no longer wanted the life that marrying Sophia Cracroft had promised to him.
Moreover, unacknowledged, even to himself, was the new found intimacy he had felt out there on the ice. He had discovered a love deeper than he had ever thought possible. He had grown closer to the crew in those harrowing months than he had ever been to any sweetheart. Truth be told, it was with James specifically, that he had felt this new found emotion the keenest. Something about facing death square in the face, not expecting to live more than another day or two; all pretence and convention was quickly dropped. There were no more barriers between them, any kind of dignity was no longer possible to maintain. He had seen into the other’s soul and he into his. After everything, he liked the man he got to know. They had hung onto each other like life rafts and Francis knew he would not have made it out alive without James.
It wasn’t until the next afternoon, (Francis had overslept until noon in a comfortable bed) after he had ate a late breakfast, that the captain was finally able to sit down at the desk in his bedroom and begin to write a letter to James.
Dear James,
I am writing to you from the home of my dear friend James Clark Ross who offered that I might stay with him and his family as long as is needed. They have been very kind to me and I owe them a great debt. I do not wish to impose on their hospitality for too long, however. It is an odd feeling being back on dry land and although I feel an immense sense of relief, I am feeling like a fish out of water. I know that you, of all people, understand my position. No-one else can understand what we and the men have been through.
I was able to have a few words with Lady Jane yesterday and promised to meet her again soon so that I might explain what happened to Sir John. I have not yet found adequate words to explain the unexplainable. Perhaps I can count of some of your talents in that department?
At this point Francis wanted to charge straight into his feelings; explain how bereft he felt that he was no longer by the other man’s side, that he wasn’t sure he could function on his own. He stopped himself. He wasn’t sure how the other man would respond and he was afraid if he said too much it would only make him more vulnerable than he already felt. He knew James relied on him too, but he was with his family now, his own blood. Surely, he did not feel the same keen sense of separation anxiety that the redhead did? With a sigh, he continued;
I hope it is not too much to ask that I take up that offer for a visit to Brighton. I do not wish to impose on your brother and his family but I feel as though the sea air would do me good. Perhaps in a week when you have settled? I enclose Ross’s address and look forward to hearing from you.
Always yours,
Francis.
With that, he sent the letter off with the express post and hoped that it would reach James by tomorrow morning. He immediately regretted the fact that he would have to wait a week to see James but he wanted his friend to enjoy being with his family and didn't want to impose on that. Afterwards took up his pen to write to his own family back home in Banbridge.
in some ways, the day of their return to england is more battering than any horrors faced in the polar north. james is exhausted by its end—before its end, he realizes, as conversations continue at the same pace around him—and hears himself asking to be taken home before the true necessity of it registers with his conscious mind.
upon return, he’s expected to be palatable. he’s expected to make a grand show of joining the families on the dock, his scars and thousand-yard stare made entertaining by his energy and charm; dimmed somewhat, they may suppose, but there.
‘ william, ’ he says after a few moments of quiet between them. james holds his elbow but looks elsewhere, either to chase one of an overwhelming many voices, or to avoid showing his brother his desperation in full. when their eyes meet again, he says nothing more, and william thankfully interprets it as the call to rescue it is.
they travel by stagecoach to brighton with plans to arrive before late evening, having departed from the port early. james makes conversation with william for not one hour before he’s forced to rest or risk spilling tears, for how much he’s missed him. he props himself against the inner wall of the coach and wonders, with each subsequent hour that passes, if the journey will be too long for francis.
by dark, they reach the house, and william gently rouses james from sleep. it occurs to him after a beat of disorientation that he’s to speak with elizabeth and meet the younger william, which must pass over his face with terror, if his brother’s huffed laugh of a reaction is to go by.
‘ it is late for a social call, ’ william says, a hand on james’ more functional knee. ‘ elizabeth will see you. you can meet your nephew tomorrow. ’
james sighs and nods, appreciative to his marrow, and follows william from the coach, slower now that the aches have had time to settle. he feels ridiculous as he approaches the door, swimming in his clothes and bent over a crutch, his hair cut short and patchy, a few teeth gone from that winning smile.
elizabeth is even more beautiful than james remembers, if made marginally less bright by the sight of him. she embraces him carefully at the door and touches the hair he’d wanted to hide seconds prior, as if to say, ‘it’s proof of your healing.’ as if she knows every detail at a glance, and from that can intuit just what he needs.
their son meets him warily the following morning, and james gives his best performance yet: he shows little william his missing tooth upper and tells him he’ll have it replaced with gold, like the pirates from his bedtime stories. his eye, too, may bear a patch sometimes. ‘ with me as protector, you’ll never have to be frightened again, ’ he says with exaggerated gruffness, and billy hugs him around both knees, causing james to yelp like a wounded animal.
guilty as he feels for thinking of anything but his family's tireless care, their unconditional affection and presence, he spends much of his time waiting to hear from francis. he drafts a letter of his own before remembering he can only guess where to post it, and that given all he’s asked of him, the other should be allowed the first move.

Peacemist: Nicer Post – Inspector Spacetime
A spin-off series, Peacemist: Nicer Post, began airing in 2005. It starred Captain James Haggard (played by Anglo-Irish–American actor Jamie St. John Bamber) and was significantly more family friendly than the contemporary Inspector Spacetime.
Jokingly pitched by the producer as "All Bug-Eyed Creatures Great and Small", the show chronicles the misadventures of Captain James Haggard trying to fit in with the quaint, bucolic Welsh hamlet of Wylf-y-Fwddoch while conducting paranormal investigations on behalf of the Peacemist Institute.
In the premiere episode, Captain Haggard remarks upon his arrival that the organisation has sent him to a "nicer post" than his previous one (i.e. bombed-out postwar Vienna in "The Cambiare Machine").

Shortcut, Pt. 1
Note: I never set out to write this stuff down, but, y'know, sometimes daydreams stick around, and the people in them become actual characters. That's what's happened to me with Jon and Niphka. This is the obligatory disclaimer that I'm not a native speaker, so please excuse any weird phrasing. I'm really not a fiction writer, but these characters have become important to me so I feel like I owe them.
A traitor's prologue
“Jonathan P. Williams, I hereby convict you for mutiny against your captain and your king. Your punishment will be enacted shortly.”
Everything had started so smoothly. Jon’s first few days as a rigger on the HMS Triumph had been a dream come true. Not in every way, of course. His work required physical strain and, furthermore, an indifference to heights. While the tall, lanky man had received snarky comments along the line of “How’s the weather up there?”, he generally wasn’t one to seek out the thrill of the edge. And no one would have ever suspected that he would voluntarily set foot on a ship. Or crave the rough life of a sailor.
Following the captain’s damning words, Gregson and Doyle each gripped one of his arms and pulled him down to the prison quarter. Jon tried to go easy on his injured leg, but the two men dragged with along without regard. They pushed him into the dark room, making no attempt to hide their glee.
“Sorry, no last meal for mutineers,” Doyle snarled.
“You might have time for another beauty nap, though. Get your chances up for the angels to take you with’em!”
Gregson slammed the door shut. The laughter still echoed in Jon’s ears after there was nothing more to hear.
Sighing, he pulled himself onto the narrow plank bed. He fumbled a candle stump and matches from his ragged, wet coat, his fingers trembling. It took a few attempts, but the small cone of yellow light cut through the dark and illuminated his haggard face.
How had things turned so sour so soon? Despite the rough conditions, he had enjoyed every second on board. The smell of the open sea was unmatched and satisfied a longing he had chased after for his whole life. Not even Doyle and Gregson could take this from him. The two had picked him out from the very beginning; two brutish men inflating their egos by tormenting the inexperienced loner. He could have arranged with the comments about his neatly combed, mid-length hair and neat appearance. He wasn’t that great with people anyway.
But then he accidentally stumbled upon the true mission of the HMS Triumph. Not to patrol the Southwest Sea, but to travel upwards to the north on the continent and invade Millersby, A small, peaceful port city. And his hometown.
This would have upset anybody, but Jon didn’t have the time to draft a plan. Gregson and Doyle had caught him and made it very clear that he would not get out of this. No words were needed. The kicks and hits said enough. Jon’s final hopes of blowing up this conspiracy had vanished into air when he realized that the ship’s captain was the head of the invasion. And here he was.
“Six days,”. He examined his lower leg. The stench of sweat, saltwater and blood made his eyes tear up.
“Six goddamn days!” he yelled. “That’s how long I’ve made it as a sailor. Amazing. Wonderful. Perfect.”
His chest was tight, the pain of his sobs a distraction from what he could see in the flickering light. His ankle looked bad, really bad. Well, he wouldn’t have long to suffer from it.
Jon grit his teeth and forcefully swallowed his sobs. A way out. I need a way out.
Or maybe he should pray? A hysteric wheeze escaped his mouth. This was it, might as well try.
Please, just- If anyone is listening, please get me out.
But which God would listen to him? He had nothing to offer. His eyes locked onto the flame, the warmth emanating to his face. He took a shaky breath.
“Jonathan P. Williams,” he quietly recited. “Son of James and Catherine Williams, brother of two. Learned carpenter, recently rigger on His Majesty’s Ship Triumph. I promise to the Gods that I have been a good man, that I have done no harm to others, man or animal. I seek in my dying hour the grace of those who lay their eyes on me to judge my life’s deeds.”
Jon had never really believed in higher powers, but his parents would be appalled if they knew he had skipped on these final words. And at least the verses had slowed his breaths and steadied him.
Gregson and Doyle would lead a calm, collected man to his death.

The 2022 Tired Pirate Rankings
(last year it was satans)
happy FUCKING friday my good bitches and arthropods, let’s do this thing \o/
Tumblr media
11. Captain Barbossa
Pirates of the Caribbean
people, this man is on the edge. look at that face. he is Haggard. and goddammit, all he wanted was to taste an apple ;_; and to be in a franchise that didn’t kinda suck
Tumblr media
10. Jim Jimenez
Our Flag Means Death
Has been tired for twenty years. No longer remembers what it feels like to not be tired. Had a quest, at one point, then just kinda ran out of fucks to give. Can’t even have sex without being interrupted by some bullshit. Isn’t a mermaid.
Tumblr media
9. Captain Hook
Peter Pan
One of the most famous literary villains of all time. Decades trapped in a horrible nightmare realm where chaos reigns and demon children cut off your appendages mean that he’s at that stage of tired where you don’t feel tired anymore; you feel like you want to and CAN kill God. Captain James Hook no longer even needs to sleep. He simply sits bolt upright for seven hours and contemplates shrimp colors. He doesn’t believe in rest. He doesn’t believe in reality. All is clocks and crocodiles and VENGEANCE.
seriously though, check out this shit:
“Who are you, stranger? Speak!” Hook demanded.
“I am James Hook,” replied the voice, “captain of the Jolly Roger.”
“You are not; you are not,” Hook cried hoarsely.
“Brimstone and gall,” the voice retorted, “say that again, and I’ll cast anchor in you.”
Hook tried a more ingratiating manner. “If you are Hook,” he said almost humbly, “come tell me, who am I?”
“A codfish,” replied the voice, “only a codfish.”
“A codfish!” Hook echoed blankly, and it was then, but not till then, that his proud spirit broke. He saw his men draw back from him.
“Have we been captained all this time by a codfish!” they muttered. “It is lowering to our pride.”
They were his dogs snapping at him, but, tragic figure though he had become, he scarcely heeded them. Against such fearful evidence it was not their belief in him that he needed, it was his own. He felt his ego slipping from him. “Don’t desert me, bully,” he whispered hoarsely to it.
My dude is struggling.
Also his death scene, dear sweet god:
He had one last triumph, which I think we need not grudge him. As he stood on the bulwark looking over his shoulder at Peter gliding through the air, he invited him with a gesture to use his foot. It made Peter kick instead of stab.
At last Hook had got the boon for which he craved.
“Bad form,” he cried jeeringly, and went content to the crocodile.
Incredible. Flawless. We shall not see his like again.
Tumblr media
8. Oluwande Boodhari
Our Flag Means Death
“I’m gonna try and undo some of the damage from that interaction.”
This poor guy. The rest of the crew is dialing it up to 11 every hour of every day and the whole time he’s over here, getting on with things. He just wants to chill with his love interest and eat cake, but nope, he’s stuck managing the emotions of a cluster of raw feckless freaks.
(if he isn’t captain for at least part of s2 we riot)
Tumblr media
7. Elizabeth Swann
Pirates of the Caribbean
HER <3
Got into piracy by accident, found out how much everyone else sucked at their jobs, had no choice but to become the Pirate King to sort the stupid bastards out.
Tumblr media
6. Nameless pirate captain
The Color of Magic by Terry Pratchett
“Some pirates achieved immortality by great deeds of cruelty or derring-do. Some achieved immortality by amassing great wealth. But the captain had long ago decided that he would, on the whole, prefer to achieve immortality by not dying.”
Long story short: He met The Luggage.
Tumblr media
5. Captain Smollett
Muppets Treasure Island
“Hmm... hmm... gentlemen, may I see you in my cabin? Immediately?”
So smol(lett), so tired.
(yes I know he’s not actually one of the pirates shut up)
Tumblr media
4. Izzy Hands
Our Flag Means Death
‘Why won’t they do chores. Why won’t ANYONE do chores. Oh god we’re running out of rations. Oh god we’re going to be killed by the Spanish. What has happened. Where did it all go wrong. How do I fix it. Why is the captain eating marmalade. aaaaaaaaaaaaa’
Tumblr media
3. Anne Bonny
Black Sails
Yeah in fairness half the Black Sails cast is terminally insomniac and forever about to snap and start stabbing random passersby, but I think the crown’s gotta go to Anne, for having not only the Most girlfriend but also the Most boyfriend as well. Tfw you’re a seething cauldron of barely-contained frustration and violence and you’re still the most down-to-earth, predictable member of the polycule.
Tumblr media
2. Yondu Udonta
Guardians of the Galaxy
AAAAAH BABY BABY HELLO BABY HIIIII OMG IT’S HIM IT’S MY LAD IT
Ahem. Yondu! Space pirate (objectively the best kind of pirate). Blue. Cranky. Does whistle arrow murders. His adopted son backstabbed him, stole the loot and a ship, never calls, likes to piss off demigods, and is played by Chris Pratt. Worst of all, the robohookers stopped doing it for him a while ago. You can understand why his nerves are fraying.
Tumblr media
1. Blackbeard (Edward Teach)
Our Flag Means Death
Crossed the boundary between Tired and In Real Trouble Here some time ago. Luckily and heartwarmingly, his chronic unmanaged depression was cured with the power of loahahahahaha no. No, actually romantic love on its own just made everything so much worse.

Breaking Barriers
You are a Winter Soldier, used to being a hired gun anymore and nothing else. When Sam Wilson calls you to help with the Flag Smashers situation, you assume it’s just a job like everything else. He might convince you otherwise.
masterlist
Tumblr media
When you first see the call pop up on your phone, you’re not sure whether you should answer at all.
You recognize the name, you know who’s calling. You know who’s waiting on the other end. You also have a sinking feeling as to why they’re calling- you know you couldn’t stay dormant forever. You were a Winter Soldier, after all, and you would never be allowed to stay away from a fight for too long. No matter how much you wished you could avoid it.
In the end, you answer. James Barnes, as you suspect, is waiting for you to reply. He’s not alone this time, joined by one Sam Wilson. The Falcon, a possible Captain America, now an ally of the very man who once tried to kill him. Then again, if you were going by people who tried to kill him, you would also be on that list. You operated under harsh mind control, you lost every fragment of your reality and ability to think for yourself. You’ve only been able to recently claw back some semblance of control, and even that has been hard-won.
You had hoped that staying away from the fight, whatever fight it may be, would do something for you. After the war against Thanos, when you had fought your hardest only to die and be reborn into another fight, you had taken advantage of the time to relax. In a way, that brief death was one of the only true moments you had to yourself. In that instant, watching your fingers give way to ash and dust, you had thought for just a second that you would finally stop being someone else’s weapon. Then you had been brought back to life, and a gun had been shoved into your hands as you had been told to fight once more.
It wasn’t their fault, of course. The Avengers needed help, you were there. However, there is something nice about being asked whether or not you wanted to join Sam and Bucky’s cause this time around. Yes, there are strings attached, as there always seem to be, but there have rarely been jobs without them. You know Sam Wilson is a good man, and Bucky tries his hardest to be one. Of all the fights to start, this might be your best one so far.
You meet them at a small airport in the outskirts of Latvia. You’ve managed to make record time on your flight, but even from your first few footsteps in the dusty tarmac, you can tell that you arrived too late. Seconds before you landed, you saw the videos trending across the world. You saw John Walker, that false Captain America, raising Steve’s shield like a barbarian and using it to slaughter a man who was begging for his life. You know what this means, and you know why you’ve been brought here.
Even without the video, you can tell that something terrible has happened. There’s a haggardness in Sam’s face, a weariness that seems to line his brow. You hadn’t spent that much time socializing with the Avengers, as even the world’s mightiest heroes tended to shy away from silent, potentially mind-controlled soldiers who tend to operate between the darker shades of gray, so you couldn’t claim to know Sam as well as his other coworkers.
This being said, you’d come to see Sam as someone who always knew what to say. You’d watched with grudging admiration as he plied the tools of his trade: soft knocks on the doors of people who needed to talk, gentle reminders that it’s okay to let one’s guard down. He’s tried them on you before, but they never really stuck. You didn’t know him well enough to fully go along with his talks, or he was still too wary of you.
You could hardly blame him- even Bucky Barnes was known first as a kind, courageous 40s-era veteran. No one knew anything about you; no files to prove your worth, to save you or damn you as someone worth the Avengers’ time. HYDRA had essentially erased you from history, and all the world knew about you is that you were one of the Winter Soldiers tasked with mindless killings up until Sam and Bucky had pulled you out. Even Bucky had Steve to back him up, but you had nobody. That is the way of the world, you suppose, not everyone has a protector. Some people have to pave their own way through.
Despite all this, though, it still shakes you to see Sam so worried. You didn’t realize how often you’d looked to him as a source of calm and reason until you saw him concerned. This alone is enough to make you lengthen your strides, closing the distance between you and the pair of Avengers until you’re standing only a few feet apart. Sam extends his hand without hesitation, and you try to match his trust when you take it.
“It’s good to see you, Y/N. You look well.” From anyone else, this would be a nothing, a pleasantry designed to get past the first few stages of protocol. From Sam, however, you feel something different. Like he might actually mean it, or know how to look for the good and bad in you. You’re not sure you were ready for that, or that you’re entirely displeased with the fact that he’s already looking out for you.
Sam gestures towards an awaiting vehicle at the far side of the airport, and the three of you begin walking. You nod once at Bucky, he nods once at you. Winter Soldiers, always knowing when to hold your tongues. Sam raises an eyebrow at this. “So the staring thing isn’t just him?” You smile inwardly. There’s the Sam you remember. Even this brief moment of humor, however, disappears quickly to be replaced by a look of concern.
“Judging by the fact that you’ve gotten here so quickly, I’m assuming you’ve seen the videos. John Walker has to be stopped before he does more damage, and we think he’s taken the super soldier serum. We could use your help in trying to get him to stand down or in taking the shield.” Even this last saying is phrased like a question. You can’t help but compare this to the way HYDRA or even the Avengers used to talk to you. Their speeches were always full of brief, harsh sentences saying exactly what would happen. You would fight, the enemy would not get away, you would stay until the job was done.
Sam, on the other hand, always leaves a way out, an escape route if you need it. You’ve already taken his call, already arrived in Latvia. There’s no chance you wouldn’t be willing to take on this job, yet Sam still checks to make sure you’re fully on board with the idea. This simple act of empathy is oddly heartwarming, and you find yourself trusting the man even more.
You nod at him, forcing yourself to recollect your thoughts. You’ve been a soldier for a long time, far longer than you should have. You can at least pull yourself together and not act like a starstruck teenager just because Sam’s the only one in years who’s truly looked at you as something more than a weapon. But it does strike like something different, doesn’t it? That’s why it’s so hard to push aside.
“Sounds good. Walker won’t come quietly, though. He saw those cameras and kept going, I doubt he’ll hand over the shield without a fight.” Sam tilts his head in acknowledgement. “I would be surprised if he did. That’s why we’ve got you, though.” You raise an eyebrow. “Backup?” Sam grins. “A friend in case we die.” Maybe he keeps surprising you after all.
John Walker, as it turns out, does not like the idea of turning over the shield any more than you had thought he would. It ends up in a fight, as it usually does. Sam and Bucky approach first, as you had agreed, with you waiting in the shadows in case Walker decided to come out with fists swinging. When things had looked particularly dire, you had jumped in, using your enhanced strength to begin forcing the shield away from Sam’s exposed head.
Walker had glared at you, recognizing you the same way he had Bucky. “You’re another Winter Soldier. You’d turn to criminals instead of staying on my side?” This last part is directed towards Sam, who stands up with a grunt. Something flickers in your chest at the sight of blood slicing up his face. “She’s not a criminal. She is an ally.” Sam says. You’re surprised to hear the honesty in his voice. He truly believes you to be a friend. He might be the first in a long time.
Walker turns back to you, attacking with renewed vitriol. “It doesn’t matter. I am Captain America. The shield is mine, even if I have to take down another super soldier to get it.” You shake your head. “It’s not about the super soldiers, Walker. It’s about making the right call. And I’ve fought enough super soldiers in my time to know that this is the right one.” You manage to wrest the shield away from Walker long enough for it to clatter to the ground. At the sound of ringing metal, the fighting momentarily stops as everyone- Sam, you, Walker, Bucky- turns to face it.
The din of metal on the ground fades away as it comes to a halt, and then everyone dives to either retrieve the shield or stop it from being retrieved by someone else. In a way, it kind of reminds you of the golden apples of immortality from the Greek Myths- one thrown, groups of mortals falling after them. The shield doesn’t just represent power as it does to Walker, it’s a legacy to uphold. The immortality of a name always seems to come with a legacy.
The fight ends with Walker unconscious on the ground, the shield finally returned to Sam. You watch as Bucky strides away after nodding one last time to Sam, then stand up yourself. Sam calls after you and you turn, seeing him silhouetted in the light of the empty door. The dark of the garage seems to hang around everything but him. It somehow seems right on him.
“Do you have a place to go? Somewhere safe? After this business with Walker, you’re going to get some unexpected callers.” You nod slowly. “I’ve been able to keep HYDRA off of my back for years. Disappearing without a trace is my specialty. I’ll be gone before you know it.” Sam considers this for a second. “What if you didn’t have to do that?” You cock your head at him, confused, and he takes a step forward. The light from the door seems to follow him in, reflecting off of the sharp white lines and metal details on his suit.
“There’s a place in Louisiana. Delacroix, near the harbor. I have family there. You can come visit, if you like.” You smile, feeling the refusal already rising to your lips. “I appreciate the offer, Sam, but if you’ve got family then I probably shouldn’t be there. I attend to attract trouble.” Sam shakes his head. “So do I. So does everyone in this line of work. It doesn’t mean you have to be on the run forever. Take a chance, Y/N. It might pay off.”
With that, he leaves, disappearing into that window of light to the outside world once more. You watch him go, thinking over what he said. There’s a small motion from Walker and you glance over sharply, relaxing when you realize he’s still unconscious. Well, he’s going to wake up eventually. You might as well take a trip and see what you find in Louisiana.
Bucky ends up having the same idea as you, and the two of you meet up for the drive in. Once in Delacroix, it turns out to be fairly easy to find Sam- just follow the train of people congregating around one particular sun-bleached boat bobbing away by the dock. Sam’s gaze lights up when he sees you, and for some reason seeing his happiness makes you feel a little better about coming. You had always been taught that this lightness in your chest, this carefree feeling, was a distraction, something that would only serve to make you worse at your job. Yet why do you feel stronger now then you have in a while?
You don’t have that much experience with boats, but everyone around you seems willing to teach you. You’re not sure whether they recognize you as a murderous Winter Soldier from the news or are just willing to overlook it, but everyone seems ready to accept you as yet another visitor. You can see how this place shaped Sam- his unwavering kindness is present in every single face you see.
You end up working almost all day, and find yourself relaxing on the dock as the golden light of dusk starts to reflect out across the horizon. You hear steps echoing down the dock, and seconds later, someone sits down beside you. “I’m glad you came.” You turn to Sam with a slight smile. “I’m glad too. There’s a new kind of feeling here, something I haven’t had in a while. It’s good to get away from everything and just take a second to breathe.”
Sam gestures towards you in agreement. “That’s the thing. We can all be excellent fighters, but you’re going to wear yourself down to nothing if you stay on the battlefield for too long. We all have to give ourselves a chance to rest.” His tone becomes softer. “That goes for you too, by the way. You are worthy of taking a break.”
You force yourself to laugh. “I didn’t realize I was going to be having this in-depth of a conversation tonight. I would have prepared myself.” Sam gives you a look. “You’re trying to avoid the topic by making jokes. You’re forgetting that I do counseling for the veterans. You can’t use any of the old tricks on me.” You raise an eyebrow. “I can try.” Sam shakes his head, but he’s smiling. “It’s too late, I already know what you’re up to. The point is, your past can only take you so far. You have a right to a good future, and you keep running from it.”
You sigh, staring out over the water. “I just- I’ve done so much. I don’t know who I’m supposed to be without it. Bucky had Steve, had an entire museum exhibition where he could go read up on who he was. I don’t know who I was before the Winter Soldier program because HYDRA wiped it all away. Without something to fall back on, how do I know who I am anymore?”
Sam reaches over, gently wrapping his hand around yours. It’s a surprisingly comforting gesture, and you end up getting so distracted by it that you forget to move your hand away at all. “I know who you are. You are Y/N L/N, the Avenger who would never give up on a fight if she thought it was good. You have a drive unlike anything I’ve seen before, and you’re the one person I called because I knew you would always have my back. I trust you, Y/N, and I know that you will be able to find a place for yourself. You found a place with me, if it’s worth anything.”
You smile at him. It’s a full smile this time, unburdened by worry or fear of the past. “It’s worth a lot, Sam Wilson. To me, it’s worth everything.” When he kisses you, you’re not surprised at all. Just happy that it would be him to finally break down your barriers, and to convince you that you are worth all of the time and energy and love that he will have for you.

Maybe It’s Time
Pairing: a bit of Steve x Reader, but leaning towards Bucky x Reader in the end

Bucky’s eyes gently opened, hearing something coming from the other room. Something that has to have become a regular thing for him now for a long while. Your piano playing.
He recognized this piece more than ever: Debussy’s Clair de Lune.
He sat up gently on the edge of the bed, grunting softly while Alpine softly purred as she stirred herself awake. It was raining; a soft pitter patter of the rain falling against the glass windows accompanied with your soft playing would have been enough to have kept him asleep, his nightmares slowly fading away and going into the wonderful dreams that he had once dreamt of. However, tonight’s playing was different, for the once playful, joyous, and thoughtful tunes coming from those black and white keys have been melancholic for quite a while. Too long of a while. Tonight, something within Bucky Barnes compelled him to do something different from these previous nights. Rather than admire your playing from afar, letting your emotions run wild by yourself, he’ll make his presence known.
Alpine meowed, watching her owner slowly put on his fuzzy slippers (courtesy of you) before she fell asleep. Bucky smiled sleepily, giving her one more pet before quietly making his way out of his room, and into the dark living room in your guys’ shared floor. The sight in front of him definitely reflected Clair de Lune: beautiful, yet filled with emotion, filled with sorrow. It hurt him even more to know just why you were hurting.
You were restless. You were critical. You tried, you fought, you pushed, you pulled.
Yet it was never enough.
At the end of the day, you got hurt. You were thrown away, rendered useless to someone who you loved deeply and passionately. Someone who you devoted yourself to, thinking they’d dedicate themselves in the same manner. You remember that day clearly, feelings still fresh from a year ago.
You were still wrapping your head around the fact that you were part of the half who disappeared in the blip. However, thoughts were brushed aside as he smiled softly at you as Bruce got everything ready, coming towards you as you returned the smile on your face. You wrapped your arms around him, your soft eyes looking at him with love and devotion, as it always had. “Be careful,” you whisper into his lips with a smile. “I will, Y/N… don’t you worry.” He says with a smile nuzzling his nose against yours. “I just wanna ensure your safety, for your sake,” You reply with a giggle. “My sake or yours?” He questions with a much bigger smile. “How about we settle with both?” You whisper, your giggles ringing in Steve’s ears. He couldn’t help the long and loving kiss that was shared between the both of you before he went off to the platform.
You watched your boyfriend, standing in his suit, Mjolnir in one hand and the case of the Infinity Stones in the other, standing in the middle of the platform with a determined look on his face. You smiled even more, for Steve Rogers, being himself, has managed to save the world once again with the Avengers. You smiled alongside Bucky and Sam who were watching him disappear out of sight. “And returning in 5… 4… 3… 2...1…” Bruce counts down, only for you three to see no one back on the platform. You began to worry. Did something go wrong? What happened? Is he okay?
Your mind was laden with panic and it wasn’t until you saw a figure sitting alongside the lake, shield propped up next to him. Confusion laced your worried features, but the two men knew. Sam talked to him as you looked on in shock, mind still connecting things together. You shook your head in denial as you saw a wedding ring on his finger. At that moment you knew.
You weren’t enough.
You slowly made your way, deciding to be strong, heart wrenching when you saw this once burly, blond man now with wrinkles, haggard, and with a wedding ring.
“Y/N,” he says, but you cut him off, forcing a smile on your face, forcing your tears to not fall down.
“N-no. It’s okay… I.. I get it… I’m.. I’m happy for you, Steve.”
You hated it. You hated having to have your hand held by him one last time, a squeeze of hands quietly speaking of the terms that you both are now on. You were never his. Never. Peggy remained his one and true love that beat time and space. And who were you to argue? She rightfully gained her place. Maybe it was time for you to accept the fact that there was no room for you in Steven Grant Rogers’ life.
But that didn’t stop the hurt that still clouds your mind and thoughts. The remembrance of the hurt and the deception on your side of the story was still fresh. The repeat of the memory merely adds salt to your still fresh wounds. It’s been inside you since then, the neverending ache courses through you. So you play. You play the grand piano and its keys with your heart out on your sleeve not caring for the sobs that leave your lips, hands gracefully touching the keys of the piano, a slow crescendo coming in as the feelings of hurt slowly grow. Your eyes stay shut as your left hand starts to move more and more, right hand playing chords and the sorrowful melody. By the time the climax of the song arrives, you are sobbing even more than before, body shaking as the pain takes on a more tangible form on your piano. Your head is swirling, your body feeling like it was going to float, you were so clouded in your mind, until a particular man with a metal arm sat quietly next to you, putting you back in your space, where you currently were.
However, you stopped dead in your tracks, embarrassed that your best friend had caught you in this particular moment, so your eyes try their hardest to remain on the keys. You already knew that his ocean blue ones were staring at you. His metal hand carefully rests upon your right hand, lightly interlocking his fingers with yours.
“I’m not over it either,” he whispers in your ear.
Again, you cry, turning your body slightly to cling to his figure. Cries slowly turn into sobs. Hugging Bucky for dear life, you said the things that have been in your head for so long.
“B-Buck.. Why did he leave?! Why?! And when we just came back?! Why Peggy, Buck?! What does she have that I don’t?! What has our time together meant to him?! Is it because I’m not as skinny as her?! Is she smarter than me? Is she funnier? More humorous? Is she kinder? Is she-”
Bucky felt the same way. He knew how you felt. He felt that way about the punk too. He wasn’t thinking of Captain America, but Steve. The little kid from Brooklyn, the same guy who had asthma, who put newspapers in his shoes, who hid an extra key under a brick. He felt like he lost his place too. However, he knew how you felt was just as bad. He understood you. It pained him to see you crying. Admittedly enough, he only hoped that you look beautiful in his eyes despite your sobs and tears. A literal angel, he’d think to himself. Unfortunate that he can’t teach his best friend a thing or two about taking care of his girl. You were in pain for so long.
His hands cupped your wet cheeks and slowly wiped the tears with his thumbs, a tiny smile when he feels you relax to his touch, kissing your forehead to further soothe you. “Steve doesn’t know what was in front of the whole time, sweetheart,” he whispers.
“He did… apparently I’m only a substitute till there was a way. That’s all I am to anyone. A substitute.”
“I never thought of you that way.” He admits quietly, so quietly, that only you both can hear, causing you to look up at him in surprise. “H-Huh? But…” “I said what I said, Y/N… I mean it. You were, are, and always will be such a sweet, kind, and beautiful dame. There’s no kind like you anywhere here, not even Peggy or anyone for that matter can replicate what you have sweetheart. So who cares who’s skinnier? Who cares if one is more funny? In the end of the day, we knew you did all you could. It hurts. I know. But, you’re gonna have that one guy who is gonna treat ya like no man ever could. I’ll make sure of that.” He whispers, looking at you dead in the eyes with understanding and love in his eyes. A small smile finally kisses your face. Not a fake one, but a small genuine one. One that only someone like James Buchanan Barnes would notice. “That’s my girl.” He whispers and smiles, hugging you once again.
He pulls away, starting to play the first few notes of Clair de Lune, eyes carefully watching yours, an invitation. You shyly joined in, allowing yourself to take your place and playing a part. You and James couldn’t help the smile that goes on your faces as it starts to progress. You watched as both his flesh and metal hand graced the keys effortlessly, nicely paired along with yours as they also graced the keys, completing this song’s melody. What was wreaking of pain and sorrow turned pensive, calming, even providing a form of resolution. You guys smiled as you both played your notes louder and louder the two of you effortlessly mirroring each other, no need to say the dynamic, the mood, the notes to play, it was all unplanned, yet it still sounded beautiful. A giggle leaves your mouth, another genuine one for the first time, which causes Bucky to smile big, happy to see you smiling again. He watches as your guys’ fingers glide through the keys, hands sometimes weaving in and out harmoniously, never causing extra struggle.
“Thank you, James… I really really feel better after all of that” you say softly, letting yourself nuzzle your face into his torso, hugging the super soldier tightly. “You always know what to say to me. You always know what to do. Always have. Thank you,” You whisper, smiling softly as the man tightens his hold on you. You both chuckled when a yawn now leaves your lips, resulting in Bucky scooping you up bridal style. “Not a problem, sweetheart. I’m always gonna be here. M’not going anywhere I promise.” He says softly, yet in a determined tone. He vowed to himself no matter where he stood in your life, he was gonna make sure you were loved and cared for. He always wanted that for you. Always looked at you in a way he never thought he’d look at a woman. Even today the way he perceived you was the same: a kind, beautiful, giving, and optimistic person who was kind to anyone but herself. “Why don’t we get you to bed, huh? I think you deserve this to say the least.” He says softly, making his way through the hallway into your bedroom.
“A-Actually. Do you think I can just lay with you tonight?” You ask shyly. You felt comfortable in his arms. He made you feel warm, protected. You didn’t want to let that go. Not now. Of course, Bucky could not say no, so he carried you to his room, where you both met a sleeping Alpine perched on her cute tower. You smiled as he laid you down gently before he laid next to you, an arm wrapped around your waist. “Thank you, Buck…you know I’m grateful for you,” you murmured sleepily, nuzzling into the crook of his neck and relaxing. Bucky only smiled and rubbed your back for comfort. “Never forget I’ll do anythin’ for you sweetheart. Promise.” He whispers, sleep taking over him a bit quicker than a normal night. You smiled as you watched his breathing steady out, knowing he was asleep. You couldn’t help the grin from ear to ear before you slept yourself. It will take a while for this pain of yours to end, but… maybe, just maybe it’s time for you to stop looking at what’s behind and what’s beyond. Maybe it’s time for you to rediscover your worth, who you can love and who can love you.  Maybe it’s time that you trust yourself, for you are worth it all and you alone is a good enough reason to live your life as it should. And maybe, just maybe… you’ll see where the brunette man with a metal arm in front of you will stand in your life. Just one step at a time and one day at a time, you tell yourself as you slowly drift into dreamland. However, you were happy, for this was the first night you felt like you were enough, and felt that hope that used to reside in your heart. For once in a long time, you didn’t feel the weight in your heart anymore, for behind you, Bucky Barnes was right behind you carrying it right with you.

In Honor of Bogey
Born on Christmas Day at the turn of the century, the acting legend Humphrey Deforest Bogart is considered the greatest male acting icon of the Golden Age of Hollywood. He was an early Christmas gift to the 20th century and eventually was recognized by the AFI as the greatest male star of classic American cinema. This is quite a title to hold with all the great actors of the last one hundred years, so I wanted to take a little space in my analysis of the AFI top 100 to recognize this acting icon.
Tumblr media
He was a kid with a lot of potential and intelligence, but his parents were not very affectionate (according to him) and he grew up with a chip on his shoulder. He went to some prestigious East Coast schools but was expelled or left on many occasions and ended up in the Navy. He joined up following the end of WWI and was part of the time of American Military glory. He loved it. He even tried to re-enlist when WW2 broke out, but he was too old and was instead registered as a volunteer reserve with the Coast Guard. He didn't get started in films until 1930, but started stage acting after his naval service in 1921. He might have gotten his trademark scar on his lip while in the Navy, but he got in a lot of scraps so it is not really certain where it came from.
Scars aside, Humphrey Bogart was a very good looking person that just exuded the ideal of manliness for the time. He started playing roles of young impetuous men and moved on to gangsters and villains. He did some work with James Cagney in a film called The Roaring Twenties. He met many woman with his star power and brutish manliness, marrying 4 times over his life before finally settling down with the fabulous Lauren Becall in 1945. He was part of the famous "Rat Pack" of the 50s. He was just so cool.
Since this is part of the AFI top 100 review, I want to cover the four movies on the list he was in as well as a couple other American classics:
Tumblr media
High Sierra (1941) - Nominated for AFI Top 100 but not ranked
This was a big opportunity for Bogart because it was a leading gangster role written by his drinking buddy John Huston. The part had been turned down by some of the great actors of the time, including James Cagney. Bogart had been getting a lot of small roles and appeared in as many films as he could at the time (he is credited in 20 movies between 1937 and 1939), but this was a big break as a leading man. He worked alongside Ida Lupino, which caused jealousy issues with his wife at the time, Mayo Methot.
Tumblr media
The Maltese Falcon (1941) - AFI #31
This was a career starter for Bogart as the no nonsense anti-hero with a chip on his shoulder and a heart of gold. This film was also turned down by other more established leading actors (George Raft) because it was a remake of the same story that was done in 1931. He played the part of Sam Spade (great name), a detective in search of a bejeweled object while getting in way over his head. Bogie had a great smoky voice and his film noir narratives set the standard for the genre. It was also the directorial debut of John Huston. Humphrey Bogart was known for downplaying his work (such a hipster), but this was a film for which he openly showed pride.
Tumblr media
Casablanca (1942) - AFI #3
This was Bogart's first real romantic lead as an expatriate in Africa at the outbreak of WWI. As far as my generation is concerned, this is his most famous role and cemented the man as a Hollywood icon. This movie won Best Picture and got him nominated for Best Actor, vaulting Bogart past James Cagney as the highest paid actor in Hollywood at the time (half a million a year; that is nothing to sneeze at now much less right after the Great Depression).
Tumblr media
The Big Sleep (1946) - Not on AFI Top 100
This was arguably the most well known of the four movies that Bogart starred in with Lauren Bacall. His wife at the time, Methot, was jealous and was afraid that Bogart was cheating on her. He was. He and Methot got a divorce and he almost immediately married Bacall. Bogart also got a little bit weird at the time because he tried to sign up for the Navy and then bought a yacht, allowed use of it by the Coast Guard, and then patrolled around the California coast with numerous weekends around Catalina. The film was actually scheduled to be released in 1945, but had a bunch of scenes of sexual innuendo added in to play up the real life relationship of Bogart and Bacall.
Tumblr media
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1947) - AFI #38
This was a film that showed the genius of Huston's writing and Bogart's acting. It was a chance to for Bogart to show off his grittiness and willing to suffer for his art. He character was one of three greedy men with stake on a gold claim that was more than enough for all three, but constant fear of backstabbing (literally and figuratively) causes problems. The movie was filmed in the Sierras during the summer heat and Bogart looked pretty bad. The movie lacked a love interest and highlighted dissension amongst a group, so Huston and Bogart (an outspoken liberal democrat) were mentioned in the Un-American Activities trial that was looking for Communists. Bogart wrote an article entitled "I'm No Communist" and distanced himself from anyone accused, but still had a slight reputation for being outspoken about first amendment rights.
Tumblr media
Key Largo (1948) - Not on AFI Top 100 but nominated for AFI Top 10 Gangster Films
The last film that featured the couple. In this movie, their characters were stuck in a Florida hotel during a hurricane. It was another John Huston directed film noir and featured Bogart's character boating around and taking out gangsters one by one. There is a somewhat racist subplot of hunting down some wanted Native Americans that a known gangster pins a murder on. That aspect of the movie always bothered me. A real standout that somewhat upstages Bogart (interestingly enough with his help) is actually the gangster's girlfriend who sings a song for the group to earn a drink. She plays a great part as a woman attracted by the villainous lifestyle and then becomes trapped in an abusive relationship. Actress Claire Trevor, who Bogart liked very much and encouraged throughout the film, won Best Supporting Actress for her part in the story.
Tumblr media
The African Queen (1951) - AFI #65
Maybe the film with the most star power during the Old Hollywood Era, this film starts Katharine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart, perhaps the two biggest stars of American film. It was his first film in Technicolor and the role won him his one and only Oscar for Best Actor. The film was shot in the Belgian Congo and once again proved Bogart's toughness. This was again a John Huston directed film and it is interesting that both of the stars of the film had friends in very high places that kept them acting in great roles: Humphrey Bogart had John Huston and Katharine Hepburn had Howard Hughes. I want to note that, in my humble opinion, this was neither actors best work but they both were given a lot of credit for braving the elements and appearing on screen looking haggard.
Tumblr media
The Cain Mutiny (1954) - Nominated for AFI Top 100 but not ranked
This was the last film that Bogart was relatively happy with, although he had to drop his salary to get the part and he was bitter about it. The part of a paranoid captain earned the actor his final Oscar nomination, but it did not really bring the same satisfaction as earlier roles. Huston wrote Bogey's characters as a loner and an antihero with an internal warmth and humor. This character did not have the charm that exuded from Bogart, the person.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Humphrey Bogart continued with high profile roles like starring with Aubrey Hepburn in Sabrina (1954) and Ava Gardner in The Barefoot Contessa (1954), but he was starting to get sick from a life of smoking and drinking. He was also in his mid 50s and couldn't play that charming young loner that he was so famous for. He had started to come across as old and didn't have his youthful charisma. He really hated working with Billy Wilder and didn't want to be the distinguished older gentleman in Sabrina. He didn't want to work with Ava Gardner because she had just broken up with his drinking buddy, Frank Sinatra. These films were successful and Bogart was a true professional, but I would not call it his best work by any means.
Humphrey Bogart was a great actor and a true Hollywood icon. Through research and watching interviews, I don't think that he would have been somebody that I liked personally because he drank and smoked heavily while enjoying arguments and confrontation. He came off as a bit of a contrarian in his later interviews and that is something that has bothered me. Don't meet your heroes. It does not lessen his accomplishments as an actor nor does it reduce the number of great films he has starred in. Just because he wouldn't be my best friend doesn't mean he wasn't a great man. I still believe that he deserves the AFI honor of being Hollywood's most famous actor. Check out some of his works and see what you think.
