Superman: Earth One (2010) by J. Michael Straczynski & Shane Davis: A Review

Clark Kent is a reserved young adult, he's leaving his familiar Smallville for Metropolis, looking to find himself, build a life. With an anguished demeanor and sad eyes he navigates the big city unscathed, but never satisfied. There's a veneer of trauma to the story, Clark talks more with his dead father, Jonathan, than to anyone alive in the book. While his parents are pumped to have a superhero son, Clark just wants to give his mother a good life, after his father's passing, and to belong somewhere, anywhere.

This had so much potential bringing this different perspective to the Superman mythos, exploring all these heavier feelings we are more used to seeing in the origins of characters like Batman or Hulk. The thing is that while Batman and Hulk earn their angst, Clark's behavior feels unjustified. It's never clear how his otherness can be an obstacle, his abilities are always described as achievements, he's easily accepted everywhere he goes. He could be depressed and that would be interesting (what to expect when the most powerful being on the planet is not evil, but isn't hopeful at all?), but that is never really mentioned.

Clark's feelings are exposed in dialogues and monologues, but his wallowing seems out of place, his father's death is not traumatic, he had a healthy relationship with his parents, he's a genius, he's super strong, he can make a lot of money really fast, but hmm, I guess everybody always asks where is Superman, but no one ever asks HOW is Superman. He's just sad, and we must embrace this.

There's also a kind of mall goth / 2010s emo to this art style and dialogue, the moodiness, the angst, the aversion to primary colors, the Welcome to the Black Parade palette of the underdeveloped villain. As an emo kid myself, I'd probably have a much better time reading this in 2012, when all was new and darkness was inherently exciting. But now, as an elderly decaying millennial emo, I just feel like I need more than aesthetics to make me interested in a story, invested in a character.

The freezing cold take of "Clark Kent is the costume of Superman" was already old in 2010, this view was popularized by the Kill Bill vol. 2 movie, released in 2004, and it's an oversimplified perception of the character, one that considers certain aspects of his history while ignoring several others, lacking the nuance a character as old as Superman deserves. It's jarring to hear this coming from Clark's mother, at this point in the story he is not Superman yet, he doesn't even know if he will someday choose to wear the cape. When Martha says "the mask is what you'll have to wear the rest of the time" she's disregarding Clark's humanity, the life he lived so far, the bonds he might develop when he's not in Smallville anymore. All of this belittled in front of the bigger goal: to turn Clark into a Superman.

In the flashbacks the couple seem slightly manipulative, Jonathan and Martha's only subject with Clark is about him becoming Superman, which might explain why the boy feels so on edge, as if deep down he's trying to run away from this fate of becoming an all achieving force of nature their parents want him to become. It's his parents who give him the Superman name, the costume and the idea to become a superhero. Clark has so little agency in this story, acting resigned, his intentions vague, it's frustrating.

On a positive note, I really liked the fact that Superman destroys a giant spaceship on board his baby ship, (even though, how exactly he stops a world invasion happening in multiple locations with multiple vessels by destroying only one single ship is never explained), overall the baby ship was a nice touch, the science fiction logic of it was very interesting too.

Superman Earth One felt like a very hopeless post-9/11 Superman story, surface level deep, moody and often bleak, without any of the positive emotional impact of the character. The art is nice though and emo Clark is cute. But I need to cheer up now. Thanks for reading this!

This cape can amplifie and manipulate movement and enegry in a 360 mile radius around them. So they can turn the energy of snapping their vingers into a thunder bolt or fire Ball, or turn their own static Electricty into a forcefield. Or they can take a single stap and amplifie it to launch them acrose a city, or run so fast they seem to teleport etc. The main downside of this power is that they can't decrease movement or enegry so if you manage to hit them they are pretty much fucked.

Okay this has gotta be a Cauldron Cape cos that kind of range and output is absolutely nuts, like this is someone who could absolutely go toe to toe with the triumvirate.

So they can amplify and control energy, but can't decrease it....Which I'm assuming would actually limit their ability to use their mover powers effectively, unless they can actually control how the energy and forces affect them. It's no good being able to run so fast you look like you're teleporting if you can't stop yourself afterwards; but other than that they're an absolute powerhouse.

My initial thought was "Can they manipulate stored/potential energy, because then they'd be throwing Kamehamehas at problems" but then my brain started getting into gear.

This is a Hawaiian superhero, in fact no this is "THE" Hawaiian superhero. Managed to get a cauldron vial and came out with some insane powers, enough so that they are the entirety of the Protectorate team in Hawaii....The PRT had a budget and there didn't seem to be much point to hiring any other capes, just have this guy work double shifts and have a dozen or so PRT agents to foam up whoever's left.

His hero name is "King Kamehameha"

There's actually not many villains in Hawaii, but King Kamehame has stopped multiple natural disasters and is basically being kept in reserve by Cauldron at the time of Worm starting in case one of the Triumvirate dies. He's one of the most powerful people on the planet but he wants a quiet peaceful life and is generally happy to be 'The backup plan'

Sunday 5th May 2024 - An Epilogue

Africa has been a real eye-opener for us both. It's been a place of contrast, bright colours, heat, friendly peoples, despair and triumph, poverty, wealth, political challenges ahead.

People travelling to South Africa naturally think of game reserves, but we have found a difference in these. There are the private game reserves that are contained behind a fence; if you put animals in that albeit very large area, those are the animals that you will see, apart from the ones eaten by others that is. Then there's the National Park approach where animals move freely from area to area, even across state borders. These are more natural but you don't know what you will find. But what is most rewarding is the opportunity to stand back and study the behaviours of the animals because it is a raw interpretation of all species including human beings. The interactive actions within a group, the exclusions, the challenge of the young males, the mourning of the dead, all points to similarities across species. We were told how a female baboon will hold onto her dead child for a week, mourning. An elephant who broke off an ear of a dead companion and carried it away also in mourning. Elephants will pass and pause by a fallen comrade. Animals will act in unison and concert for both protection and also to hunt.

Then we have seen the poverty and despair especially in Zimbabwe. An immensely rich country but riddled with corruption at high office. The people talking in despair of ever finding a way out of the current difficulties of corrupt politicians, eye watering inflation and unemployment. Opportunities that should be fair and available for everyone and a way out of squalor. Some of the most deprived dwellings we saw in South Africa we were assured were occupied by Zimbabwean people having fled the life they have had at home. But at all times the people we spoke to from SA, Botswana and Zimbabwe were delightful and so pleased we were there with them and so pleased also to talk of their lives.

The train journey was fabulous but it highlighted the difference in circumstances more perhaps than any other part of the trip. We were enclosed within our cocoon; the train being at that moment our world, one of opulence and wealth now voyeuristic to their world outside of it. The small children running after the train down the track reaching out for anything we might throw to them was symbolic in every way to the inequality of the two worlds and the distance between us increasing due to the speed of the train, so also perhaps we see how these two groups of humanity, here in the 21st century are growing further apart. It was interesting that a few black people told us that things were actually better for them during the years of apartheid, not because of the inequalities clearly, but because for them there were jobs.

Then of course there are the Americans! We met up with two lovely ladies from Philadelphia; one of whom said she would vote for her cat before she would vote for Trump. We got on so well with them during our time at Chobe. Other Americans sadly we didn't. But what a year this will be and what outcomes can we expect? SA elections end of May, US in November and UK sometime. Apprehension in SA, despair everywhere for possibilities in US and resignation in UK.

Then there's the food. The spices. I have eaten crocodile (tastes a bit like chicken), kudu, ostrich (lovely) and springbok (national animal!) Enjoyed every single meal. Train food was gorgeous. Fantastic spices.

Our route started in Cape Town; a great city especially the Waterfront where we stayed. Quite a cosmopolitan place, international but very friendly and our first introduction to Africa. The Garden Route took us as far as Port Elizabeth and into the Shamwari Game Reserve. If we had returned home after the Garden Route, we would have said well that was nice but not too special. But Shamwari started to change that view. The Reserve was such an excellent introduction to the big 5 and the location, facilities and professionalism of the rangers was outstanding. Chobe National Park in Botswana for our next safari took a different format with the emphasis on viewing from the Chobe River. We were able to spot animals from a different perspective entirely and gave us a feeling and liking for Botswana and her people. We really loved this place. Then entering Zimbabwe and seeing the staggering force of nature in the form of the Victoria Falls, fed by the mighty Zambezi River, with 300,000 gallons of water per second crashing over the precipice. Our time was running out, but before we returned we had the terrific five day Rovos Rail trip from Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe to Pretoria in SA taking us to yet another game National Park, then Bulawayo to see the grave of Cecil John Rhodes; an inspirational person from the late nineteenth century. And then the final jewel in the crown, Pretoria, a surprisingly interesting place; a city that is one hundred percent Africa.

Great trip, much to reflect on and hope for what comes next...... Some people say Africa gets under your skin like an itch. Only time will tell if we need to scratch it.

She must have recently consumed one of her usual vast quantities of sugar... he hopes she's been eating well at the very least. The tension lining her face suggests to him that she's nursing one of her ever-present headaches -- is it worse this time around? Jing Yuan clicks his tongue, pushing himself up into a proper sitting position. "Sit with me." If she chooses to obey his request, she'll find herself cast into darkness as the heavy, cool cape affixed to Jing Yuan's shoulder is flipped over her head. "You're in luck, Lady Fu. I just so happen to be about to take a lunch break. You are welcome to join me; you are far too overworked as it is." (Something about the lilt in his voice might give her the inkling that he had decided on a break this very instant, and something deeper in his tone might sound -- despite him giving no apparent room for debate -- more like a plea, though it is difficult to parse and nigh impossible to pinpoint.) Comics this week?

Action Comics #1053 - Finally found a Metallo design that I like! Way Sandoval has the remnants of his skin clinging to his metal frame makes him look like one of the Flayed Necrons from Warhammer 40k, and I love it! With Lex shifting towards trying to "help" Clark, it's good to have another villain who does terrible acts and holds Superman responsible for them. Metallo turns a bunch of Blue Earthers into cyborg zombies? It's all Superman's fault! And I am a fan of Corben's path to villainy starting when he first encounters a gun, and now he's become a gun himself. But the real intriguing point for me this issue was Kon, Kenan, and Otho. Kon and Kenan express reservations about saving one of Metallo's minions. Clark advocates compassion for all, but those two clearly have doubts. Then at the end we have Otho seemingly attacking the Blue Earthers. Three members of the Superfamily are already chafing under Clark's authority. I'm excited to see how Clark handles members of his Family not being totally aligned with his approach and outlook. If PKJ is building up to a revolt within the Family, I can't wait to see the fallout of that!

Stargirl #5 - Weakest issue of the run, too much exposition for me. It's a mini Johns, you don't need to treat every issue like it's someone's first and do a big info dump. Sue me though, I like Boom and I am interested in how she is going to fit into the JSA. Anyone want to place bets that Hourman is recruiting sidekicks for a crisis in the future that will also tie into the War of the Four Legions I expect Johns to announce on Friday at Megacon?

Unstoppable Doom Patrol #5 - Good start! Has enough of the DP patented weirdness to *feel* like the DP, while also being recognizable as something set in the mainline DCU. Never could buy the Way/Derington run as set on the same Earth as the mainline capes, but this I can. Beast Girl is cute and Degenerate might prove entertaining if Cliff is around to keep him in check. Degenerate's attempt to act tough bouncing right off of Cliff's blasé attitude was funny. And really even if the writing had been bad, the Burnham art alone is worth the price. Seems like we're finally going to see Malluh move on from Brain and do his own thing with Immortus.

Detective Comics #1070 - One of Ram's weaker issues. Enjoyed the analysis of the nature of Gotham and the Vigil poking their heads in, but at this point "what if YOU'RE the real villain Batman?" is not a hard hitting or particularly gripping question.

Gotham City: Year One #6 - Best "Batman without Batman comic" since Gotham Central ended. All the same I would prefer this stay out of continuity, not really a fan of how King all but says Slam is the true father of Thomas Wayne. I don't like when they try to make Bruce into someone with oppressed minority heritage. I like that it's the story of a WASP billionaire who beats the shit out of criminals. Trying to smooth out his edges so he can be Twitter and Tumblr's "unproblematic fave"? Nah fuck that, Batman's at his best when he's a character that makes you uncomfortable and unsure if he can overcome the unsettling parts of who he is.

Waller vs. Wildstorm #1 - Not a Wildstorm guy so I have no clue who Battalion is or what's his deal beyond what the issue shares, but I love Lois here. We get to see rookie Lois who has doubts and fears, it's a different take on her from the norm which I enjoy. Also dig the Cold War setting, that period between the JSA going away and the new age of superheroes that Superman kicks off is prime setting for stories about civilians and non-cape metas.

Blue Beetle: Graduation Day #5 - Not really sure what the conflict with Horizon would even be at this point. They sent Beetles because they feared the Reach taking over Earth, Jaime has shown the other Beetles he's not a threat, unless the Horizon are bad guys after all, what's left to do?

Invincible Iron Man #4 - Good issue but... I don't buy this "rivalry" between Fei Long and Tony at all. Long comes across as a total poser and try hard that Tony takes apart with ease. The Mandarin or Justin Hammer this guy is not, even gets called out on how he's just rehashing old clichés. Doesn't come across as arch nemesis material, nor does he even really have a compelling reason to be feuding with Tony.

Sabretooth & The Exiles #5 - Didn't end anywhere near as strongly as it began, but I respect how it made no compromises about what a piece of shit Sabretooth is.

Planet Hulk: Worldbreaker #5 - Had high hopes for this mini but it sadly ended up being yet another example of why creators who have done seminal work before on a character shouldn't return.
