Broke: "Twilight's father's eyes were hidden because he doesn't remember his face/doesn't want to."
Woke: "His father's eyes weren't shown because he's actually the Shopkeeper."
Tumblr media
Call it a crack theory (someone else actually explained it quite well on this post) but I believe it enough to spend 5 hours on that drawing. Man just tanned a lot from all the gardening.

More on candide and her reptiles. I gave them some placeholder names.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you haven’t seen any of my other posts on this basically: the reptiles are from the lab candide works in before shadow gov which implants human intelligence into animals to use as weapons or to potentially take over the world just in case their clone project fails. No they do not speak but they have their own forms of communication that candide has learned. Is it a stupid idea? Yes, but so is creating clones of historical figures to take over the world.
One more note abt the reptiles: Argo was introduced to Eden as a juvenile and is very attached to her for a while. He wouldn’t be considered stubborn by the other scientists if he wasn’t by Eden’s side. They’re still buddies, eden just doesn’t like to leave the house much which is why Argo is shown with candide more in the show (I’m insane sorry lmao)

okay im gonna ask for three: not the bees
oh this one is SO MUCH more lighthearted lmao this is a oneshot where stede takes ed on a romantic date to a botanical garden during the height of spring when the flowers are in full bloom and it’s beautiful and fragrant and vibrant and there are bees everywhere and ed is so scared of bees.
its ok though bc there’s binoculars in the car and ed goes and gets those. and then grabs a table overlooking the area where they were before and puts his feet up and gets his phone out:
Heart plummeting—Ed was calling off the date—fuck, fuck fuck fuck—Stede answered with a noise that he’d hoped would pass as inquisitive hum but came out closer to plaintive whimper.
From the other end, Ed spoke. “Tell me about those purple ones I keep seeing everywhere. The little guys. There’s a couple you’re standing right in front of.”
Stede looked down at the cluster of grape hyacinth by his feet.
“Yeah, those,” said Ed. “They’re all over the place. Is that on purpose? Or are they just a nice-looking weed, or what?”
“Where are you?” Stede asked, now less upset but considerably more confused.
“I’m over here.”
“That’s very helpful. Thank you.”
“Look, just rotate yourself. I’ll tell you when.”
Stede raised his head and rotated.
“Other way.”
Stede rotated the other way. “Oh, I think I see you. Is that you? Hi!”
and they have a sort-of-long-distance date where stede infodumps about flowers and ed follows along from behind his binoculars and No Bees Get Near Him

Maestro Leonard Bernstein’s “Make our Garden Grow” from Candide is one of the most beautiful and stirring anthems ever composed.
The song holds a deep and inspirational meaning. The lyrics weave together the aspirations and determination of the characters to find purpose and meaning in their lives. Through the symbol of a garden, the song signifies the desire to create something beautiful and life-sustaining amidst the chaos and uncertainty of the world.
The opening lines, spoken by Candide, acknowledge the flawed nature of humanity and the world we inhabit. He states that they are not noble and that they cannot live in beautiful harmony because such a utopian existence does not exist. However, despite this realization, he expresses a commitment to do their best and live out their lives, acknowledging the limitations of their own abilities.
Jamie Bernstein, the Maestro’s daughter, has written, “the soaring chorus seems to be telling us that growing our garden is a metaphor for the flowering of mankind itself.”
This rendition, performed at BBC Proms in 2015, by the John Wilson Orchestra under the direction of John Wilson; Scarlet Strallen; Julian Ovenden; Louise Dearman; Lucy Schaufer and the Maida Vale Singers.

#it's 1am and i'm depressed and don't want to go to bed#there's such an unbelievable amount of century-defining tragedy and horror in the world rn#and i know that’s always true but jfc we know about so much more of it simultaneously now#like i'm supposed to be chill and functional in the face of war pandemic climate change forever chemicals micro plastics and fascism?#and and and?#i'm supposed to smile and ask follow-up questions when people tell me about vacations to Hawaii#rather than shaking them and saying holy fuck stop doing that please learn about the ramifications and historical context of your actions#i'm supposed to smile and give a measured response when a new coworker asks my other coworker and me#when they can/SHOULD use generative AI *for work purposes*#rather than screaming and throwing articles at them about the environmental impact of LLM bullshit#and that's all large scale#that's not getting into the fact that there's a growing family chilliness over refusal to communicate about I/P shit#or the fact that my mom is dying slowly and hates it and is worsening her relationship with my siblings little by little#or the fact that I'm peeling away at my sanity trying to process a divorce and get healthcare for my cat and dental care for myself#or the fact that it takes hours of research to find DISH SOAP THAT DOESN’T KILL THE MICROBIOMES OF THE LOCAL WATER SUPPLY#(10/10 recommend 'blueland' for that if you're reading btw)#like i'm painfully aware of the back-patting level of efficacy that i have for buying different soap and going to the farmer's market#but there's only so much i can do so i have to try to do what i can right? but it's so little and everything is so much#and my mental health is a mess; the fact that my particular neurotype is known to get more volatile with age scares the shit oit of me#like it's this bad at 33 and it gets WORSE?#my job is great for personal privilege but so *so* meaningless and redundant#and how tf do i look at all of this and not feel fucking hopeless?#i can distract myself with my garden but the candide approach was myopic even in the 17th century so it's hard to justify now#I'm so tired#just... fuck man#tag rant#i should delete this but I'll forget if you read this far i hope it wasnt damaging to your mental health#i just had to let off the brain scream pressure somewhere

This Month in History - July Part 2
This month there are so many pop culture landmark anniversaries that I had to do 2 installments. For Part 1 read here. Here is This Month In History from July 16-31:
July 16, 1999: Eyes Wide Shut opens
Tumblr media
In July 1999, Stanley Kubrick's final film was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2014. Happy 25th EWS!
July 21, 1989: UHF opens
Tumblr media
In July 1989, Weird Al Yankovic's comedy about an underdog UHF TV station opened. Here is my piece I wrote in 2014. Happy 35 UHF!
July 22, 2014: Alvvays released
Tumblr media
In July 2014, the self-titled debut album from Alvvays was released. I've been lucky enough to cover this band's albums and concerts over the last 9 years. But this debut (my #31 album of the 2010s) spawned the near perfect single “Marry Me Archie”, my #3 Song of 2014 and one of the best of the 2010s.  In June 2015, I saw them live at Brighton Music Hall and was impressed by their dream-like sound. The band even signed my CD at the merch booth. This debut is the sound of dreamy indie poppers swinging for the fences in a big way. It still holds up! Happy 10 Alvvays!
July 25, 1989: Paul's Boutique released
Tumblr media
In July 1989, The Beastie Boys' magnum opus was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2019. Happy 35 PB!
July 26, 2019: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood opens
Tumblr media
In July 2019, Quentin Tarantino's look at the changing Hollywood of 1969 opened. I saw this opening week and loved every minute of it! It's like it was tailor-made for a film geek like me. I named it my #1 Movie of 2019 and it made my #10 of the 2010s. Just a few weeks ago I spoke with co-star Nicholas Hammond at Super Megafest about this film. Happy 5 OUATIH!
July 27, 1979: The Amityville Horror opens
Tumblr media
In July 1979, one of the earliest and scariest movies I went to see in the movie theater with my parents was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2019. Happy 45th TAH!
July 27, 1984: Ride the Lightning released
Tumblr media
In July 1984, Metallica's second album was released. It was a band refusing to fall into the sophomore slump! When I did my Top 5 Metallica Albums list last year, I ranked this at #4! Happy 40th RTL!
July 28, 2004: Garden State opens
Tumblr media
In July 2004 the voice of 20-somethings at that time film was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2019. Happy 20th GS!
July 30, 2004: The Manchurian Candidate opens
Tumblr media
In July 2004, Jonathan Demme's remake of The Manchurian Candidate was released. This is truly an underrated remake. When it came out it was updated to be about a Gulf War vet and a multinational company. It kind of got lost in the Summer movie shuffle, but over the last few years there's been some revisionist takes on it saying how ahead of its time this was and how amazing it was that in an election year, this slipped through the cracks of a major studio to make a movie with obvious references to Cheney and Halliburton. I picked it up on blu-ray a few years ago and it is actually a very smart paranoid political thriller. Demme was being underestimated since his last film was also a remake (The Truth About Charlie, an update to Charade). But as always Demme delivered! Worth revisiting. Happy 20th TMC!

Love me a character that at their core is selfish. Even when they do good things it’s selfish and personal but still genuine because they believe in what they’re doing even if they’re only doing it for themself.
Anyways I failed to make a charismatic and likable BBEG he’s a lower tier villain who gets semi-domesticated instead.
