Hiii, I am so sorry for reacting so late, I have just been really busy with exams and stuff. Anyway, here is the post about Candida Aureus. I will also post about Alternaria solani, but at another time because I am still occupied with my exams.
This post will focus more on the fungus itself, rather than the effect it has on humans.

Candida aureus
Candida auris is a type of fungus that grows a yeast and can cause candidiases in humans. It is most often contracted in hospitals by patients with a reduced immunity.¹ The fungus can enter the blood causing fungemia (the presence of yeast or fungi in the blood) and cause serious infections.² These infections affect the bloodstream, central nervous system and the internal organs.¹
C. auris has attracted attention because of its drug resistance. It was discovered in 2009 and has seemed to spread globally in the past 15 years.
Identification and microscopic features
C. auris was first described and identified in 2009 after being found in the ear canal of a 70-year-old Japanese woman at the Tokyo Metropolitan Geriatric Hospital in Japan. It is a species of ascomycetous fungus of the genus Candida that grows as a yeast. It forms smooth, shiny, whitish-grey, viscous colonies on growth media.¹
Microscopically, cells are ellipsoid in shape.¹ The cells are approximately 2.5–5.0 micrometres in size and are arranged singly, in pairs or even in groups. C. auris does not form hyphae or pseudohyphae. Although, if it is grown under high-salt stress and depletion of heat-shock proteins, it can result in production of pseudohyphae like forms.³

Origins and emergence of the species
DNA analysis of four distinct but drug-resistant strains of Candida auris indicate an evolutionary divergence taking place at least 4,000 years ago. The common leap among the four strains into drug-resistance might be linked to to widespread azole-type antifungal use in agriculture. However, explanations for its emergence remain speculative.¹

Another possible explanation for its origins and spread is suggested to revolve around seawater. Molecular biologist Auke de Jong explains the correlation: ‘Because this fungus has a very high tolerance for salt, which is a substance many fungi cannot cope with. The sea could be a plausible route for the global spread of Candida auris; it may have been spread across the globe by the currents.’ ⁴
Vaccine development and treatment
As of June 2024 there is no human vaccine against Candida auris, however experiments involving the NDV-3A vaccine have successfully immunized mice against the fungus. This vaccine also improved the protective efficacy of the antifungal drug micafungin against C. auris infection in the mouse bloodstream.¹
Treatment can be complicated because of its multiple drug resistance and it easily being misidentified as various other Candida species.¹
Highly adaptable
Molecular biologist Auke de Jong also talks about how C. auris is a highly adaptable fungus. Besides its high tolerance for salt, it can also survive relatively high temperatures and commonly used disinfectants. The actions of mankind have accelerated the fungus’ adaptive capacity. Through the large-scale use of fungicides in agriculture, we have accelerated the adaptation process in this fungus. This contributes to the development of an fungus that is rapidly building an increasingly stronger resistance to the substances with which we fight it.⁴

common laboratory bacteria ranked by smell:
Streptococcus anginosus: sweet and butterscotch-y. a favourite of all techs.
Candida albicans: a yeast. smells of rising bread dough and beer. some isolates produce this smell stronger than others, and more odorous organisms are sometimes shared among staff to enjoy the smell
Pseudomonas aeruginosa: sweet, like a fake grape flavour. reminds me of my childhood. sometimes compared to tortilla chips. always pleasant to encounter
Proteus vulgaris: not commonly liked, but i would describe its smell as akin to chocolate cake. others might call it fishy. a controversial fave
Staphylococcus aureus: on blood agar, the smell is reminiscent of that of unwashed human skin. reminds me of smelling people, which makes me like it
Coagulase negative Staphylococcus: similar smell to S. aureus
Klebsiella pneumoniae: a rectal smell somewhat like E. coli, but with more of a "wet dog" funk. i don't hate it
Haemophilus species: mildly unpleasant. a moist and musty smelling genus
Escherichia coli: the ambassador of the world of bacteria smells like you might expect bacteria to. i would not describe the smell as fecal, but certainly rectal.
Enterobacter cloacae: much like E. coli, but just noticeably worse. like you left your E. coli plate in a nasty bathroom
Fusobacterium nucleatum ACC 25586: QC for anaerobic jars. smells of rotting pumpkins, acrid flatulence, and bad breath all rolled into one. i refuse to work with it on benchtop

I had to get another 12 vials of blood siphoned off, so it's time for another exciting installment in The Vampire Diaries, brought to you by the Anerican healthcare system.
Let's call this The Stigmata Phlebotomy Lab Strikes Back, shall we?
Content warning: blood, needles, medical incompetence
Recap: For those of you just joining us, in 2022 I became a statistic for the COVID + mild autoimmune diseases like arthritis can trigger "autoimmune dysregulation" studies. That means the immune system starts running around screaming THE SKY IS FALLING and attacking one's own organs in an attempt to flush out intruders. (Ew, I just realized, it turned my T-cells into MAGATs/Tories.)
Good news, the target was not my lungs.
Bad news, two words you never want to hear together from an ophthalmologist: "eye melt".
After many creative ($$$$) measures, what saved my eyes were eyedrops made from my own blood plasma, because we're resorting to medical witchcraft now. (Platelets, apparently.)
So. Vital Tears? Saved my vision. Trouble is, their phlebotomists are auditioning for Monty Python.
The Hostile Housecall Sketch. When I couldn't see to drive, I had to invite a vampire into my home, which was a little awkward for an introvert who's had to self-isolate since 2019. I'm sure my manners were rusty, but still, she was the most uncommunicative medical professional i have ever met, sort of an anti-dentist. I fumblingly suggested the dining room after she didn't reply to my "Welcome, I'm [name], this is my first time so I'm kind of nervous!" I realized afterwards that she never told me her name. I know she must have spoken at some point, but all I remember is stony silence.
Sterile Procedures? In This Pandemic? Next time I drove to the lab hoping to find a more friendly med tech. And I found one! He was very friendly while dropping all twelve vials of my blood on the floor again and again because he kept setting them on a rounded stool instead of a table. Quoth he: "Don't worry, it happens all the time. The last patient was nervous about it, too, but I told him not to worry about it!" I was not altogether reassured. Maybe I shouldn't have looked at those Health Advisory flyers on the way in warning about a drug-resistant candida aureus outbreak in county healthcare facilities.
Operation Stigmata. Today'a score: 5 phlebotomists, 9 rubber gloves, 3 glasses of water and 2 low sodium V8s before the appointment and 2 liters of water during, 7 cotton pads. 8 bandaids, ~15 disinfecting sterile swabs, 3 rubber tourniquets (sometimes 2 at once), EIGHT different needles and EIGHT different punctures, and 2 hours to fill 12 vials with blood.
I almost made it through without losing my temper — the last thing you wanna do is antagonize someone putting a needle in you— but after one particularly painful bit of windshield wiper subdermal probing, I finally burst out, "You're 90 degrees to the vein...I've never seen anyone do that before!"
Still, apart from that, I kept up my Model Patient persona pretty well. At the end, when one of the women said, "Thanks for being so patient," I replied with a firm, "Thanks for sticking with me... pun intentional."
I'm honestly impressed. Both elbows feel like I've been assaulted by Woody Woodpecker, but it took a dedicated team effort to outdo the phlebotomist who left me with major bruises and visible needle marks at my high school graduation 35 years ago.
Now, how to bribe the vet who draws blood from my cat into practicing human medicine without a license.

Patología: 04/08/2023: Apéndice ceal + ganglio + ileon distal: inflamación cronica granulomatosa con necrosis de caseificación. *ZN + PAS + Plata metenmina (-).
Imágenes: 09/08/2023: Ecografía abdominal: barro biliar sin complicaciones, ascitis. 01/08/2023: TAC abdomen contrastado + torax contrastado: hallazgos compatibles con tuberculosis diseminada de tórax y abdomen con obcsctrucción intestinal con segmento de transición en el ileon distal. Análisis y Plan de manejo: Paciente de 31 años, hospitalizada en contexto de TB miliar e intestinal, que genero obstrucción intestinal y necrosis de íleon distal, el 4/08/2023 fue llevada a lavado peritoneal + Eventrorrafia + Ileostomía + Fistula mucosa. Ya fue valorada por toxicología y psicología. En hemoglobina de control evidenciamos leve caida de 0. 4, en el momento levemente taquicardica, Ileostomia con debito de 800 cc, ya se encuentra con loperamida. El día de hoy encontramos a paciente estable hemodinámicamente, dolor moderado, afebril, refiere sentirse cansada, continuamos vigilancia.
