Long COVID and ME/CFS folks, and disability allies:
I have something you can do in 15 minutes that will be very helpful to those of us with these disabilities!
The Canadian working group putting together recommendations for Post-COVID Condition (PCC) have released some bad recommendations regarding exercise as a treatment for Long COVID and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) to treat Post-Exertional Malaise (PEM).
The UK just recently managed to get these recommendations out of the NICE guidelines for ME/CFS, and we should try to prevent them from getting embedded in the Canadian ones for Long COVID.
They have a survey out until Nov. 27 at 11:45pm EST asking for public input. If you can manage it, please fill out the survey explaining why these are both bad recommendations. The survey is open to people internationally, and anyone interested in the topic. Please mark #2 and #8 as "Major Concerns" and provide a sentence or two explaining why (in your own words).
Draft Recommendation #2 - recommends exercise as a treatment for Long COVID, and only briefly mentions the existance of post-exertional malaise (PEM). Given how many people with long COVID meet the diagnostic criteria for ME/CFS, this is entirely backwards. PEM should be evaluated first and regularly thereafter and exercise should only be suggested once everyone is confident that PEM isn't present.
Draft Recommendation #8 - Recommends CBT as a treatment for PEM. This is recommending a psychological treatment for a physical issue, which is inappropriate. It also contributes to the long history of treating the fatigue in ME/CFS as self-inflicted. And is an activity that can also worsen or cause PEM.
The recommendations and links to their evidence charts are inside the survey itself, or you can open the PDF link on the first page and write your answers before copying them into the survey.
Survey:

Here's a blog post explaining one person's responses to the survey:

And here's one on the history of these "treatments" for ME/CFS and why they're based on bad science.

BC Conservative leader John Rustad assured anti-vaccine activists British Columbia would be open to joining other jurisdictions in legal proceedings inspired by the Nuremberg Trials that would be aimed at prosecuting those deemed responsible for COVID-19 public health measures and vaccines. “Nuremberg 2.0,” an idea popular among COVID-19 conspiracy theorists and the online far-right, is simultaneously inspired by the Nuremberg Code, a set of ethical principles on human experimentation, as well as the Nuremberg Trials that prosecuted Nazi leaders after the Second World War. Nuremberg 2.0 advocates typically call for those who created, justified or enforced public health measures — including politicians, doctors, academics, journalists and police — to be jailed and even executed for “crimes against humanity.”

Please consider signing this petition to keep masks in public hospitals.
Disabled and medically vulnerable people deserve the same access to healthcare as everyone else, and we can't get that until we don't have to risk getting sicker every time we need to get treatment. Masks should be a requirement in hospitals anyway, not just for covid.

So interesting how Canada has provided arms, training, military intelligence, and funding to the IOF for decades and during this latest wave of occupation atrocities and genocide, but people still are believing that Canada is somehow better than the US. Canadian military intelligence was key in developing the census data used to target as many Palestinans in Gaza as possible per strike. It was used to train their murderous "assassination factory" algorithm which is used to maximize kills per bomb. Canada's literally doing the same things and it's even doing the same propaganda of materially contributing to genocide while claiming to be working "behind the scenes" to stop it SO many of the so-called western governments are doing literally the exact same thing yet y'all think begging genociders to please stop by sending letters and calls is working if you think asking mass murderers to stop their actions can or will work, it's because you are willing to buy genocidal propaganda instead of rejecting it in favor of supporting militant action against genocide. It's telling that those voices most loudly and consistently urging & organizing all these petitions are white & unmasked in public. They're genociders who believe they're better because they don't like (some) war but they still like genocidal governments and committing genocide for personal pleasure.
Wear a mask and riot for Palestine.

I reblogged a long post and added it at the end, but I think this deserves its own post:
In Canada, you can request FREE (including shipping) n95/equivalent masks in several sizes including small/youth sizes from a charity: donatemask.ca. You can also request rapid tests, in case you can't find them locally anymore.
I have several friends who were able to get masks from there that they couldn't get elsewhere for $ reasons, and they shipped the masks pretty quickly too. They can also provide larger quantities of masks for community organizations (I helped a club at my university order over 800 masks, so that all of their events this term can be masked including a music showcase with several hundred people attending!). If you can't afford or find masks for you/your kids, it's really worth ordering some here.

No seasonal reprieve for COVID with cases rising heading into summer | CTV News
"We have to remember COVID is not gone. So, this is a little different than things like influenza where we see it nearly disappear in the summer. The last two summers, COVID has really hung around and as a result, we continue to see waves and upticks of virus throughout the year," said Craig Jenne with the University of Calgary's department of microbiology, immunology, and infectious diseases.

Canada Day is still such a problematic thing. Unless and until we treat first Nation communities with respect and inclusion and basic human rights supports and address race bias and the amplification that first Nation women experience on gender bias plus disabled first Nation person's experience over and above the usual nonsense (IE how with many disenfranchised and discriminated upon diseases like long viral diseases these communities are not even getting diagnosed). Also lgbtqia+ and two spirit first Nations experience an exponential amount of discrimination over and above the usual horror.
We have not yet met the bar of adequate on how we treat our first nation communities. The lack of addressing of gender, race, disability and disease bias within Canada must be recognized as being far over and above that difficulty for first Nation communities as well as people of color particularly, women of color.
It is nice to celebrate a long weekend, Canada has done some good things, but we think we're farther along our human rights accomplishments journey than we are. We have a long way to go. Until we do a Country-Wide *putting on of our big person underpants* and addressing bias in all of its forms within the education, bureaucratic, governmental, legislative, and corporate systems, I don't see how any of this changes, ever.
What's happening to me, the death March off a cliff of gender and disease bias is beyond horrific. But even in the midst of the difficulties I'm experiencing I can only think wow, how much harder it must be for racial discrimination on top of that especially for our first nation communities
The first 5 episodes of the podcast give you a synopsis of what's happening to me. And if you choose to listen remember how much worse it is for those POC communities (I'm not sure it's letting me properly post it via the link feature in Tumblr so I guess you'll have to copy and paste it if that's not clickable) https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/i-am-madeline/episodes/Ep--1---How-do-you-solve-a-problem-e110jks
Here's the latest episode, *Queen Of The Cranky Arses* https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/i-am-madeline/episodes/Queen-Of-The-Cranky-Arses-e2lbfaj
The GoFundMe has most of the news media article links and updates if you need more information(I think I put them in the pinned post of this tumbler as well. But honestly I'm so tired I can't remember). If you decide you'd like to donate the media pieces have links to the GoFundMe so you know that it's for real and it's me.
(but here's the last article for convenience sake https://ricochet.media/en/3991/Canada-MAID-policy-death-by-poverty )

It’s not hard to connect the dots between the anti-vaccine extremists, including Premier Danielle Smith, who now dominate Alberta’s United Conservative Party and the admission by a beleaguered Alberta Health Services that it is shutting down its long-COVID clinics in Calgary, Edmonton and Sherwood Park. AHS, once a model of how to run a modern integrated provincial public health-care agency, is in the early stages of being broken up by Smith’s government, which is bent on relitigating the 2020-to-the-present COVID-19 pandemic from a MAGA perspective that denies the reality of the disease, believes life-saving vaccines kill children and views public health measures as a totalitarian control mechanism. However the desire to shutter the seven long-COVID clinics was communicated to the cowed current leaders of AHS, it is safe to assume this reckless decision did not originate with health-care professionals at a time when medical researchers are still trying to unravel the mysteries of long COVID.
