this got a bit long tho so i’m putting it under the read more for people who don’t care/are only here for the whump

OKOK. so i’m kinda in the starkid/nerdy prudes must die fandom rn but i know for a fact if i finished adventure time and started watching fiona and cake, that would quite literally become my entire personality for the next 3 months because simon and prismo (and marceline and princess bubblegum and all my other favorite characters) make me insane. but i haven’t done that because well. i’ve gotta write tllr yknow..

anyway, my absolute most favorite pieces of media of all time are undertale and deltarune guys. i cant put in words how much those games mean to me holy shit. as i’m writing this i’m sitting next to my jevil and sans and spamton plushie and they are saying hi. anywayyy yeah i was in the deltarune fandom for a bit it was fun. spamton is silly fucked up creature. jevil is my all time favorite tho

AND THE MAGNUS ARCHIVES… my favorite thing ever fr. y’all. LISTEN TO TMA SERIOUSLY YOU’LL PROBABLY LIKE IT!! it’s a horror podcast and it’s seriously the best fuckinf thing ever it’s so amazing seriously. it’s a bit hard to get into at first because season 1 is less story driven BUT HOLY SHIT. AHHHH ITS SO FUCKING GOOD. jon is one of my favorite blorbos ever and so is michael because he’s a silly distortion guy. just trust me and listen to TMA it will actually change your life.

also i love the amazing world of gumball so fucking much. i wasn’t allowed to watch cartoon network as a kid (idk why??) so i first watched tawog last year and holy shit holy shit it’s my favorite thing ever. rob. ROB!!!! ROB IS MY ALL TIME FAVORITE CHARACTER. SO IS MR SMALL. AHHHH!!!! anyway i love tawog i’ve drawn a lot of fanart and even wrote a 60k word fanfiction (about what happens after The Inquisition because that ending fucked me up) that i’ve Never and will probably never show anyone because it’s probably Not that good. but it was sooo Important to me back then. tawog just means so much to me it :))) it changed me as a person. nobody’s a nobody and everybody is weird like you and me.

i also really like hollow knight! i haven’t played it in a while but i was at 111% completion on one of my playthroughs (CURSE YOU PANTHEON 4). i’m also super fucking excited for silksong obviously and i will say this now: WHEN SILKSONG FINALLY RELEASES… i will probably go on hiatus here LMAO. sorry but guys. SILKSONG…. honestly same for new deltarune chapters. the second chapters 3, 4, and 5 release it is sooo over for me. i probably won’t post much here for a few months during that. but that’s fine!! i’ll never abandon tllr but sometimes some things are more important to my silly little brain :3

gravity falls quite literally changed my life in 2018. like i can’t even explain it, but it’s how i was introduced to online fandoms and fanart in general. dipper LITERALLY made me trans (not literally but pretty much). it’s how i started watching other amazing cartoons and series i love, it’s literally what made me get into drawing art and writing and stuff. it’s what made me start making ocs. it literally made me an artist guys. which is how i started writing. without gravity falls and it’s effect it had on me, this account might have never existed?? i’m being super dramatic but wowww. i was so autistic about that silly cartoon

minecraft i love. i’ve been playing minecraft for over a decade and won’t stop because it’s like, probably a special interest of mine? i’ve watch minecraft youtubers forever too, hermitcraft and the life series are my favorite. i’m a huge grian fan too, been watching him since the evo days. anyway if u play minecraft and wanna play with me sometime, feel free to ask!!! :D i love making new friends and playing video games with people!!! let’s make a world together!!!

also i like terraria and stardew valley, and animal crossing new horizons but i haven’t played that in a few years. hmm other games i like are oneshot game, NITW, omori, celeste, cuphead, fnaf (although i’ve only played the first 5 games and am super super behind on the lore), ori, dead cells, untitled goose game (this is for u anon), and probably more i’m forgetting! feel free to recommend me some video games and we can even play together :3

other series i love are the umbrella academy. soooo autistic about this show it’s fucking AMAZING!!!!!! klaus is my favorite character. anyway i also like what we do in the shadows. it made me super autistic about vampires (before i watched this show i kinda thought vampires were cringe IDK WHY I’M SORRYY). the netflix show lucifer made me insane a few years ago and is what probably indirectly inspired me to give Dew wings. i also like our flag means death, breaking bad, moon knight, and camp here in there (another podcast i HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend, will wood made the soundtrack!)

i LOVEEE FINAL SPACE!! avocato has been my pfp on this account forever and now i feel like i can’t ever change it (i don’t want to). final space is seriously amazing!!! but it was cancelled and basically got fucked over by the networks- infinity train style. idk, stuff happened and it was removed from hbo max so there’s not really anywhere to watch it (legally) except for netflix international iirc? but it’s getting removed from that too i think. super fucking sad :( it ended on a huge cliffhanger too BUT there is a graphic novel being made!!!! super excited about that!

other cartoons i like are over the garden wall (dressed up as wirt for halloween last year), the owl house, adventure time, regular show, steven universe, infinity train, bojack horseman, rick and morty, mlp, the midnight gospel, and so much more i’m forgetting. OH anime i like are death note, demon slayer (haven’t caught up yet on the latest seasons tho), and MOB PSYCHO 100!! vampire in the garden on netflix is really amazing as well.

this is sooo long but now i gotta talk about my favorite music artists. WILL WOOD (AND THE TAPEWORMS) IS MY FAVORITEEE. I ALSO LOVEEE JHARIAH!!! AND HARLEY POE!!!!! top three of all time. i also like toby fox obviously, and glass beach (LITERALLY GOING TO SEE THEM IN MARCH AND I AM SOOO EXCITED!!!), mcr, shayfer james, weezer, mitski, lemon demon, set it off, tally hall, gerard way, and probably more i’m forgetting. i also like musicals!! (i was in the spongebob musical earlier this year for school! i was larry the lobster :))

so guys. GUYSSS. IF YOU LIKE MUSICALS, GO WATCH NERDY PRUDES MUST DIE!!!! OR JUST WATCH THE ENTIRE HATCHETFEILD TRILOGY!!! i think this is it. this got super long but i’m super passionate about my interests so yeah. this is pretty much everything. one very important thing (literally my special interest) that i didn’t mention are my other ocs. i have wayyy more ocs that are completely separate from the tllr ones. i don’t wanna post about them here though, cuz they’re not whump related and i want to keep my main account separate from this account. but they’re my favorite blorbos in existence so…

Nine

Penelope enjoyed her little, quiet life. She had wanted to be a writer for as long as she could remember, but she didn’t want all of the attention that came with it. It had been different ten, maybe even twenty years ago. Most of the time writers put out their books, maybe did some interviews, and the world left them alone. But with the internet, it was hard to maintain any sense of a quiet life no matter what your job. A person could post a video of you that they took anywhere, and you could go viral. In both good and bad ways.

Her book series, The Gossip, was so popular that most of her marketing was done by fans. Girls posted fanart of the series, edits, and costume inspiration because the book took place at a private school. There were all kinds of podcasts going over every detail and every pop culture reference that Penelope included.

Her own, personal Instagram hadn’t seen any action except for the message that she’d gotten from Colin the other day. But a few days after the press release for Wallflowers had gone out, her phone suddenly wouldn’t stop vibrating from all of the notifications that she was getting. Enough so that it woke her up from the deep sleep she had been while using her arm as a pillow at her desk.

Penelope jolted awake and found herself staring at her phone. “What the hell?” she whispered, shocked. “What the hell?”

She looked at the notifications and found that she was tagged at least a million times in pictures of her kicking Colin Bridgerton out of her apartment. “Shit!” The article read: Mystery Woman for Colin Bridgerton?

Colin Bridgerton, who was previously linked to actress Marina Thompson, has been seen coming out of a mystery apartment. Sources say the redhead in question is Penelope Featherington, a family friend of the Bridgerton’s that Colin knew from high school. Penelope and Colin both attended the same school, Whistledown Academy.

Penelope took a deep breath. “Oh, my god. Oh my god.”

She grabbed the paperwork that she had gotten from Colin the other day and used the phone number that he had left to call him. She waited a few rings and then Colin’s voice was on the phone. “Penelope, are you okay? What’s wrong?”

“What’s wrong? What’s wrong? You bring chaos into my life and have the audacity to ask what’s wrong?”

“What are you talking about?” Colin asked.

“I’m talking about TMZ plastering my face online and now thinking that we’re sleeping together! You’ve got to delete it, please. If my mother thinks that I’m sleeping with you, there will be invitations sent out for nonexistent June wedding.”

Colin paused. “Are you really that disinterested in me? What happened to the Penelope that used to blush every time that I said hi to her in the halls? I’m feeling hurt.”

“You are ridiculous!” Penelope said. “You’ve met my mother. If you think that she won’t start booking reception halls, you don’t know Portia Featherington.”

Colin muttered something under her breath and Penelope couldn’t make out what it was but knowing Colin, it was probably something inappropriate. “You really want me to call and tell them what? That we’re not dating? Teen Penelope would be so disappointed and----”

“Fuck.”

Penelope furrowed her brows together. “Colin? Is everything okay?”

“Marinas engaged.”

Penelope coughed. “Oh----I’m sorry.”

“Pen, I can’t do a press tour for this movie getting asked questions about Marina all of the damn time.”

“The movie’s going to take a year to write and film anyway. What’s the big deal? By that time, she’ll probably be married and popping out babies.”

“Come on,” said Penelope, “what’s the big deal? You come from one of the richest families in the world, your mother has been called America’s mother, and you were one of People’s Sexiest Men alive on your eighteenth birthday and four years running after that. You’re fine.”

“Come on, Pen. Do me a favor. We can pretend to be dating. Anyway, I need someone to do research for the role.”

Penelope made face. “It’s a teen drama and you are basically going to be Nate Archibald. There’s no research to be done.”

“Really? You don’t think that the people who have waited forever to see Lulu Rochester’s debut, best-selling novel adapted deserve the best, most accurate portrayal of all of the steamy scenes that everyone loves so much?”

Penelope paused. “Are you asking me to be your intimacy coordinator?”

Colin chuckled. “No, there’s a whole lot of work that actually goes into being an intimacy coordinator. I’m asking for you to help with research purposes, you know.”

“Research purposes?” Penelope said.

Colin paused. “Yes, research purposes. This is the first time I’m going to be the leading man. I want to make sure that I do it right. I know it’s a book for teens, but it’s important to me. This could be a great launching pad.”

“And in order for it to be a great launching pad, that means that the two of us need to practice the sex scenes?”

“I do want it to be Oscar worthy, y’know?”

Penelope snorted. “The only films that win Oscars are depressing films about married, white people going through divorce or World War Two dramas. Maybe a World War One movie depending on who’s naked in it. This is a teen drama movie for Netflix.”

“Yeah, but it’s basically Cruel Intentions, only the main character is a plus size lead. No one is going to take this movie seriously if you don’t.”

Penelope scratched her head. “I’m not the author. It’s not my job to take it seriously.”

“I mean, if you could give me Lulu’s number, I could easily hook up with her instead.”

“No!” Penelope blurted. “No. It’s fine. I mean, I’m her assistant. It’s my job to help her get the very best of everything. I’ll…. I’ll help you with whatever you need.”

“Good,” said Colin, “then, we won’t worry about the TMZ pictures?”

Penelope sighed. “How do you do that?”

“Do what?”

“Always get your way.”

“I’m that good.”

“You’re annoying is what you are.”

“Bye, Pen.”

“Bye, Colin.”

The call ended and Penelope had never felt more exasperated in her life. Her heart was racing and she forgot that this was what being around the Bridgerton’s felt like. There was always something dramatic going on. That was why it was so intoxicating to be around them. She only hoped this wasn’t going to end up like the last time.

What is the Series About?

The Divine Trials is a story about connections, empathy and love. It’s also a story about cool magic fights, familial trauma, and angels and demons (because they’re super aesthetic). When I started writing this series I felt very alone and isolated. So, I decided to write a story where someone feeling the same way got to go on an adventure in a wondrous and intriguing world, accompanied by a cast of fun characters. This series is the result, and I hope that Enoch’s story will resonate with others feeling as lonely as him. And if not his, then perhaps the journeys of those he meets along the way. After all, everyone we meet is going through a journey of their own, and the inhabitants of the Three Realms are no different.

No one is meant to be alone in this world, and if you’re willing to look, you’ll eventually find people that love you. You exist, so you’re worthy of being loved. Though on the surface, this is a series about people facing villains, having magic battles and stopping world-ending disasters, at its core it’s simply about people in pain healing through the love of those around them

Okay, but what is it about?

In a fantasy world split into three realms, a Scribe with prophetic powers finds himself dragged into the conflicts of angels, demons and gods. Visions of danger and destruction plague the dreams of a young human named Enoch Augnium. To protect those around him, he must face off against people blessed with magic abilities; track down Remnants of the gods that existed before the world itself; and stay true to his belief that every life is worth saving.

I don’t have a Kobo Tablet or device, can I still read the digital version?

While using a Kobo device is the easiest way to read the book, you can also read it by:

Is the eBook being sold on any other websites, like Amazon or Kindle?

Due to many publishing sites being based in the US (making payment more difficult because I’m Canadian), or requiring you to publish through them exclusively, right now it’s only available through the Kobo store here.

I’m interested in purchasing a physical copy of the book. How do I do that?

Physical copy orders can be made through the Etsy shop here! There’s also a link to all versions of the book on our Important Links page. If you aren’t able to use Etsy, you could also message on any of the series’ social media accounts and we could figure out payment/shipping that way. Etsy just helps streamline the process.

I ordered a physical copy of the book, when will I be getting that?

If you’ve ordered a physical copy, chances are I’m currently in the process of purchasing shipping stuff and getting it to the post office. The delivery day itself will depend on scheduling availability or mail times, but I’ll do my best to get it to you ASAP!

How much is a physical copy?

Base price for book one is $25 CAD (plus shipping). This price is based on the printing costs for the books themselves. There may be some changes in price for future editions/books due to a change in print location for the next batch. I’ll try to keep things as low as I can for you though.

Does an autographed copy cost more?

Nope! If you’d like your physical copy signed, just let me know which name you’d like me to use!

Am I allowed to do fanart, fanfiction and other fandom-related creative stuff about the series?

Yes! In fact, I highly encourage tagging this blog if you do! I’ll try to reblog any fanart or cosplay stuff here, but unfortunately I can’t read or share any fanfiction or writing related creations. While I hope that fans of the series won’t do this, there have been instances where fans have accidently predicted canon plot points through their fanfics, and then accused the writer of copying their ideas when the writer was simply doing what they’d originally planned to do with the story. Some of these incidents ended up as actual lawsuits, so to avoid that situation altogether I can’t read any fan content. That being said, as a writer myself I wouldn’t dream of discouraging people from writing, so even if I can’t read it, feel free to write things for each other!

If any other questions seem to pop up often, I’ll add them to this list down the line. Thanks for taking the time to read these!

As much as this has been something weighing on my mind for a while, I've tried not to complain too much about it because I don't really like to rant or complain about personal problems in public. I’m also aware that this really is a small problem in the larger scheme of things, that a lot of people have it much worse than me, and that this has all been going on for years anyway and ranting or getting worked up about it won’t help anything. But after seeing two people get harassment recently over the apparent sin of drawing Ken/Miyako fanart (one of which was done somewhat as a present for me), I’m going to have to ask that you guys forgive me for needing to rant this once.

It’s not a secret among people who know me that I write fanfic for Ken/Miyako and naturally enjoy the ship. I’m aware it’s canon, but whether it’s canon or not would have had no bearing on whether I shipped it (case in point, my other go-to is Takeru/Daisuke, which I’m well aware never had a chance in terms of being official at all); it came more from my preferences in ship dynamics I like. I’m a multishipper who likes many things, but naturally, it being my go-to for writing means I happen to have a particular attachment to it. But the problem is that even so much as talking about it basically makes you a walking target for people -- especially Daisuke/Ken fans -- to come harass you.

Ken/Miyako is canon, and that alone will probably make a lot of people tell me “you spoiled brat, you know how many people would kill for their ship to be canon? You don’t get to complain.” I suppose I should feel lucky for that, but as a trade-off for getting what amounts to table scraps that barely mean much in terms of official content, I constantly have to worry that even so much bringing up the ship within the fanbase will result in people wanting me dead. Considering I don’t even really care for the idea of the series itself becoming thick on romance anyway, I’d much rather ask for people to please stop harassing or even threatening me or people I care about than I care about romantic canon or whatnot.

Of course, I have to add the usual disclaimer that I'm aware not all Daisuke/Ken fans are like this. In fact, I'd say most of the ones I’ve met have been really very gracious to me, and I like the ship myself too, so I’m happy to discuss it with them, and if you’re a Daisuke/Ken fan who hasn’t been doing this to people, I really apologize if you’re reading this post and feel like you’re being thrown under the bus. But unfortunately, the few who aren’t willing to be forgiving of me are enough to make me and any friends who want to post it constantly afraid of getting people mocking and insulting us for the sheer act of posting it. It’s basically the same thing that happens with Takeru/Hikari (and I’m also sorry to the other lovely fans of that ship who might be reading this); it’s a popular ship that quite a few people in its fanbase is convinced would have been canon if not for that damn epilogue, and therefore is infamous for harassing any ship that “conflicts” with it. In this case, because Ken/Miyako is canon, it’s basically the Public Enemy #1 ship for that crowd, and even though I consciously know in fact most Daisuke/Ken fans are very kind, meeting one encountering my posts unfortunately leads to that reflexive reaction of “please don’t kill me please don’t kill me please don’t kill me I’m sorry I’m sorry I’m sorry I can’t do anything about the epilogue I just want to write fanfic”. I won’t ask you to like my ship, I won’t even ask you to not hate it, but I’m begging you, please, I can live another day without a “reminder” of why my ship is trash and yours is superior.

Not helping this is the fact there’s also the section of the fanbase that will accuse you of being heteronormative for not portraying Miyako as a lesbian, which is baffling considering she's gushed about boys more than she's gushed about girls in the canon narrative. I don’t want to fight, so I don’t want to get into a whole argument about how that could actually conversely be bi erasure, and I certainly don’t feel like anyone like that will be convinced if I start unpacking the intricacies of my own personal life story, relationship with orientation, and preferences in my ships and ship writing, but that’s how it is. It’s just never been a fun experience liking a ship that happens to be het and having to hold your breath hoping that someone doesn’t want you dead for being heteronormative trash this time for once. You'd think this really shouldn't be a big deal, but after I and other friends have gotten things ranging from anonymous harassment (a big reason I don't have anon asks on right now) to public shaming to violent friend cutoffs, I'm just really tired.

I don’t know. I don’t know what’s the purpose of this post, since like I said, I doubt this will change anything, but I just needed this off my chest.

like.... the tv series? No... I’ve drawn dc comics fanart before, though. But it’s been years since I’ve been really into it. I like jumped ship like 10 years ago when the New 52 happened LOL.

He’s just fun to draw... hats, glasses, guitar, a good shape... but I don’t think I’ll rly post those until I can hide them in another big sketchbook pdf.. probably Jan 2022. Stay tuned........ These are all sort of related to backgrounds/painting so I grouped them together even though they’re pretty much entirely separate questions.... ANYWAYS

a) How is it working as a BG artist? Is it hard? What show are you drawing for?

I think you’re the first person to ever ask me about my job! Being a background artist is great. It’s definitely labor intensive but I think that could describe pretty much any art job (If something were rote or easy to automate, you wouldn’t hire an artist to do it) and I hesitate to say whether its harder or easier than any other role in the animation pipeline. Plus, so much of what truly makes a job difficult varies from one production to the next, schedule, working environment, co-workers etc. But I will say that I think while BGs are generally a lot of work on the upfront, I think they’re subject to less scrutiny/revisions than something like character/props/effects design and you don’t have to pitch them to a room like boards. So I guess it’s good if you don’t like to talk to people? LOL

A lot of my previous projects + the show I’ve worked on the longest aren’t public yet so I can’t talk about em (but I assure you if/when the news does break I won’t shut up about it). But I’m currently working on Archer Season 12 LOL. I’m like 90% sure I’m allowed to say that.

c) What exactly do you like to draw most [in a background]?

@kaitomiury Lots of stuff! I really like to draw clutter! Because it’s a great opportunity for environmental storytelling and also you can be kind of messy with it because the sheer mass will supersede any details LOL.

I like to draw clouds... I like to draw grass but not trees lol,,, I like to draw anything that sells perspective really easily like tiled floors and ceilings, shelves, lamp posts on a street etc.

d) Do you have any tips on how to paint (observational)?

god there’s so much to say. painting is really a whole ass discipline like someone can paint their whole life and still discover new things about it. I guess if you’re really just starting out my best advice is that habit is more important than product. especially with traditional plein air painting, I find that the procedure of going outside and setting up your paints is almost harder than the actual painting. There’s a lot of artists who say “I want to do plein air sometime!!” and then never actually get around to doing it. A lot of people just end up working from google streetview or photos on their computer.

But going outside to paint is a really good challenge because it forces you to make and commit to lighting and composition decisions really quickly. And to work through your mistakes instead of against them via undo button.

My last tip is to check out James Gurney’s youtube channel because hes probably the best and most consistent resource on observational painting out there rn. There’s lots other artists doing the same thing (off the top of my head I know a lot of the Warrior Painters group has people regularly posting plein air stuff and lightbox expo had a Jesse Schmidt lecture abt it last year) but Gurney’s probably the most prolific poster and one of the best at explaining the more technical stuff - his books are great too.

e) Do you have tips for drawing cleanly on heavypaint?

@marigoldfool UMM LOL I LIKE ONLY USE THE FILL TOOL so maybe use the fill tool? Fill and rectangle are good for edge control as opposed to the rest of the heavy paint tools which can get sort of muddles. And also I use a stylus so maybe if you’re using your finger, find a stylus that works with your device instead. That’s all I’ve got, frankly I don’t think my drawings are particularly clean lol.

f) Tips on improving backgrounds/scenes making them more dynamic practicing etc?

Ive given some tips about backgrounds/scenes before so I’m not gonna re-tread those but here’s another thing that might be helpful...

I think a good way to approach backgrounds is to think of the specific story or even mood you want to convey with the background first. Thinking “I just need to put something behind this character” is going to lead you to drawing like... a green screen tourist photo backdrop. But if you think “I need this bg to make the characters feel small” or “I need this bg to make the world feel colorful” then it gives you requirements and cues to work off of.

If I know a character needs to feel overwhelmed and small, then I know I need to create environment elements that will cage them in and corner them. If a character needs to feel triumphant/on top of the world then I know I need to let the environment open up around them. etc. If I know my focal point/ where I want to draw attention, I can build the background around that.

Also, backgrounds like figure compositions will have focal points of their own and you can draw attention to it/ the relationship the characters have with the bg element via scale or directionality or color, any number of cues. I think of it almost as a second/third character in a scene.

Not every composition is gonna have something so obvious like this but it helps me to think about these because then the characters feel connected and integrated with the environment.

Some more general art questions

a) Do you have any process/tips to start drawing character/bodies/heads?

I tried to kind of draw something to answer this but honestly this is difficult for me to answer because I don’t think I’m that great at drawing characters LOL. Ok, I think I have two tips.

1) flip your canvas often. A lot about what makes human bodies look correct and believable is symmetry and balance. Even if someone has asymmetrical features, the body will often pull and push in a way to counterbalance it. we often have inherent biases to one side or another like dominant hands dominant eyes etc. you know how right-handed artists will often favor drawing characters facing 45 degrees facing (the artist’s) left? that’s part of it. so viewing your drawing flipped even just to evaluate it helps compensate for that bias and makes you more aware of balance.

2) draw the whole figure often. I feel like a lot of beginner artists (myself included for a long time) defer to just drawing headshots or busts because it’s easier, you dont have to think about posing limbs etc. But drawing a full body allows you to better gauge proportion, perspective, body language, everything that makes a character look believable and grounded.

Like if you (me) have that issue where you draw the head too big and then have to resize it to fit the proportions of the rest of the body, it’s probably because you (I) drew the head first and are treating the body as an afterthought/attachment. Sketching out the whole figure first or even just quick drawing guides for it will help you think of it more holistically. I learned this figure drawing in charcoal at art school LOL.

oh. third mini tip - try to draw people from life often! its the best study. if you can get into a figure drawing/nude drawing class EVEN BETTER and if you have a local college/art space/museum that hosts those for free TREASURE IT AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT, that’s a huge boon that a lot of artists (me again) wish they had. though if youre not so lucky and youre sitting in a park trying to creeper draw people and they keep moving.. don’t let that stop you! that’s good practice because it’s forcing you to work fast to get the important stuff down LOL. its a challenge!

b) I’ve been pretty out of energy and have had no inspiration to draw but I have the desire to. Any advice?

Dude, take a walk or something.... Or a nap? Low energy is going to effect everything else so you gotta hit that problem at its source.

If you’re looking for inspiration though, I’d recommend stuff like watching a movie, reading a book, playing video games etc. Fill up your idea bank with content and then give yourself time/space to gestate it into new concepts. Sometimes looking at other art works but sometimes it can work against you because it’s too close.

Also something that helps me is remembering that art doesn’t always have to be groundbreaking... like it’s okay to make something shitty and stupid that you don’t post online and only show to your friend. That’s all part of the process imo. If you want to hit a home run you gotta warm up first, right? Sports.

I should probably compile everytime i give tips on stuff like this but that’s getting dangerously close to being a social media artist who makes stupid boiled down art tutorials for clout which is the last thing i want to be... the thing I want to stress is that art is a whole visual language and there are widely agreed upon rules and customs but they exist in large part to be broken. Like there's an infinite number of ways to reach an infinite number of solutions and that’s actually what makes it really cool and personal for both the artist and the viewer. So when you make work you like or you find someone else’s work you like, take a step back and ask yourself what about it speaks for you, what about it works for you, what makes it effective, how to recreate that effect and how to break that effect completely, etc. And have a good time with it or else what’s the point.

For the last one, I don’t actually believe I’ve ever addressed artwork as insp for stories/rp but I’ll say here and now yeah go ahead! TPN s02e05

Ha! I can finally say that I was right! THEY WERE SPEEDRUNNING FOR NORMAN. Am I happy about it? Of course not! But let’s start from the beginning.

Basically, this episode was the last turning point - they could either go for something amazing or fall into 6/10 at most. I don’t think you will be surprised how it went, in my opinion.

- So, we didn’t have major timeskip in the last episode, but in this one... oh, boy! Remember how I was hoping that they would show us how they survive after losing everything? How we might get new stuff? Well, I was wrong. But that’s not the for thing. We were lied about getting anime original. What we are indeed getting is “The Promised Neverland: The Abridged Series”. They are getting scenes that will go manga readers go “Ah, I remember! It was an amazing moment”, but all we are getting is an image without context and emotional bearing.

- Farm have been attacked - cool, but do you remember that anime onlies don’t know about mass produced farms? Because that’s an important detail. Well, at least that told me that Norman is indeed alive.

- The scene between Emma and Ray would be sweet... if it had any meaning. We didn’t seem them grow as friends. We didn’t see them travelling and fighting in Goldy Pond. We didn’t see them gain more respect for each other. So why should I feel anything about it? Look at the picture below. It’s still, it has no colours, you don’t hear anything, and yet it tells you a lot about their wonderful relationship. Anime failed miserably here

- You know what people who are running away do? Light up buildings that haven’t been used for ages because, yeah, nobody will catch them, right?

- And that just make me ask: where is Isabella? Why they gave her that amazing scene in the last episode if it doesn’t seem like she became a major threat. They have been on the go for almost a year, for heavens’ sake!

- Again, the scene with the old demon would be amazing if we got more from Emma in this season. All we got is: she is kind for everybody. THAT”S WHY GOLDY POND IS IMPORTANT! Because she needs to come out of her comfort zone! Because she realizes that sometimes kindness isn’t enough. That’s why her later acts of selflessness are so impactful - because despite everything she is stil herself.

- x2 Again, the scene with demons trying to save their siblings would be amazing if it was done better. Don’t expect the viewers to become invested because you show them suffering children. That’s not enough. That’s why worldbuilding is so important. To be clear, manga also wasn’t perfect in that sense. BUT! I think that attack on the capitol, killing of those who drunk cursed blood and Ayshe backstory are well written and make it all better. I’m just greedy and want more.

- Remember how this anime actually had good chase scenes? I’m waiting more Ray is Sasuke memes because it looked Naruto parody, not gonna lie.

- And now for the big one. Remember how in the manga you suddenly find out that William Minerwa is actually alive and is planning to destroy the farms? Children are taken to a secret hideout that became home to many cattle children. Emma decides to meet the big boss herself and then

Easily one of the best wholesome moments in the manga. But it keeps going!

So! Surely anime will give us something similar amazing, right? Right? Or, you know, you can just turn Norman into Robin Hood and make him take off his mask in the middle of a town filled with demons. But that would be silly because he is the smartest child from Grace Field, right? RIGHT?

Guys, I tried to stay optimistic, I really did... but this episode broke me on so many levels. It’s not just that they are changing things up. It’s that they take things away and don’t offer anything in return.

Anyway, I won’t drop this series because I appreciate interacting with this lovely community. I think that TPN fandom is really amazing and I adore talking to all of you. Fortunately, we still have manga, fanarts and fanfictions! On the topic of that, since I’m about to graduate, I will soon come back to my own post-canon fanfic. I honestly can’t wait because I didn’t have time to write anything in months.

So, in conclusion, TPN deserves more than that. It’s not a perfect manga, but that doesn’t stop me from loving it. And as for the anime... if season 1 is Empire Strikes Back, season 2 is Rise of the Skywalker

If Bruce Wayne really is a child abuser who hits his kids emotionally damages them, can't even tell them he's proud of them... and if all of said kids can't even get along, try to kill each other at every turn and are just a toxic environment all over, like.

What's the appeal of Batman, then, like at all? I got into the fandom because I saw people couldn't stop talking about how much of a great found family it is, with this brooding hero dad guy actually being soft and adopting every traumatized kid he sees, like. Honestly I'm a little bummed, I feel like everyone just lied to me and lured me into an idealized version of a fandom that doesn't even exist. How do I get out now? Do I just suffer and stew in my own rage in silence?

I won’t lie to you, a lot of stuff in this fandom is idealized. Tumblr has their own versions of each of the Bat Family characters that just doesn’t line up with canon. We indulge fanart and fanfic that make them seem much more of a loving and functional family than they really are. (The most exaggerated is Jason, who doesn’t often interact with the family at all.)

However, there is still family-ish appeal in the comics. There are many examples of the Bat Family interacting that have been the baseline for Tumblr’s idealization.

I can point you to a ton of actual comic panels that I’ve posted, or send you to @shamelessbatfamtrash for any specific scenes you want to find.

Batman and Robin (2009), Batgirl (2011), Batgirl (2000), some issues of Robin (1993), Robin: Son of Batman, Robin War, etc. (These are some of the ones I read/know about that have some family moments)

Bruce being an abusive father is a more recent thing. Most examples are in the last 10 to 15 years. It’s usually for the sake of drama and separating Bruce from the fact that he is a dad. (DC wants Bruce to be a hot, young, eligible bachelor even though he’s a middle aged man with 6 kids.) Before this, Bruce has mostly been a very kind and doting father to Dick, Jason, and really any child he met.

The reason why we all still consume Batman media despite this is because we can see who the characters are suppose to be, based on their ideals and character background. Family is too important to Bruce for him to take it for granted. Yes, he’s emotionally constipated and brooding, but he’s more than what recent comics are making him out to be.

For a better understanding of Bruce’s character, I think the Batman: The Animated Series captures his character really well. I definitely recommend watching it.

It’s also totally ok if you can’t bring yourself to like certain characters. DC is so broad, you can 100% find something/someone you genuinely enjoy. (And I like to read fluffy fanfics when I need a break for Comic Drama.)

Wuko in the Comics: Ruins of the Empire, Book 1 part 2

Welcome to my series of posts discussing Wuko in the Comics. In this post I'll continue to discuss RotE Book 1. There are some... interesting moments in the second half of this comic, including a very famous line that all but confirms canon Wuko.

Plot Summary

Fearing that Guan will use violence to stop the election, the Krew decides to bring Kuvira along with them to Gaoling, hoping that she can talk him down. When they come face-to-face with Guan, however, they discover he does not intend to use violence, but will run in Gaoling’s election. The Krew decides the best solution is to find another candidate with enough public support to defeat Guan fair and square; and they decide to ask Toph to run. It is revealed, however, that Guan does not intend to win fair and square. He’s planning to brainwash Gaoling’s citizens to vote for him.

Major Plot points in the second half of Book 1

We start off right away with the Sauna Scene. Everyone looks excellent. The ladies' sauna wear is lovely. Mako and Bolin have their classic swim suits seen in season 1. Wu is literally just wearing a towel. I found myself googling saunas and steam baths to see if it’s normal to wear swimsuits or just a towel, and everything I read said pretty much anything goes as long as you are comfortable, but I do find it interesting that everyone wears swimsuits except Wu. Maybe because he does steam baths more often and he’s just more comfortable in that setting? He seems pretty confident and not at all shy. I don’t have anything analytical to say about it, I just think it’s an interesting detail, that he doesn’t seem to have any hang-ups about being nearly naked around Mako his friends.

They are discussing Guan’s militaristic movement toward Gaoling, and tossing ideas around to handle the situation. Mako not-so-helpfully suggests using force with the united forces which Zhu Li shoots down right away, not wanting to escalate the situation. Wu agrees and wants to find a peaceful resolution. Korra, remembering her conversation with Kuvira, thinks she has the answer. She proposes bringing Kuvira along to Gaoling, which NOBODY is happy about. Asami is upset because she made it clear earlier she does not want to be in the same room as Kuvira, Bolin is distressed because Kuvira nearly had him killed when he defected from her inner circle, Mako points out that he nearly lost his arm taking down the mech, Zhu Li says she invaded republic city, Asami reminds everyone that Kuvira killed her father, and Wu boldly declares that we can’t forget she ruined his coronation… He quickly reads the room and apologises (character growth?).

Korra acknowledges everyone’s concerns and points out that she truly believes Kuvira can be an ally- she was their ally when Zaheer was trying to kill her and the airbenders; and when her spirit vine weapon ripped open a new portal to the spirit world, Kuvira thought she had died and Korra believes that changed her. Bolin points out that Kuvira is very persuasive and may have a good shot at convincing Guan to stand down. Everyone is convinced and declares their support for the plan.

Zhu Li orders Kuvira’s release and Korra brings her onto the airship taking them all to Gaoling. And, I’m sorry, this frame is like, the bitchiest collective look from Mako, Wu, Bolin and Pabu. I just love it.

They initially plan to restrain her, but decide it’s pointless when Kuvira points out if she wanted to escape that she would have already. They arrive at Gaoling and there’s no sign of Guan and his army. Kuvira is certain he’ll be there, and points out that she needs to change so she doesn’t meet with him looking like a prisoner.

Korra and Wu go to meet with the election candidates. Their portraits are on the wall and it’s revealed that the candidates are both elderly magistrates who have been working in the local government for a long time. They are practically indistinguishable from each other, which causes Korra concern. Wu isn’t happy about it either, he was hoping the elections would bring in new leaders to take the earth kingdom in a new direction. Instead, it looks like nothing will change in Gaoling or the rest of the earth kingdom if things play out the same way. They are both disappointed but Korra is optimistic that this is the first election and over things will improve as they iron out the political kinks

Back in the flying machine, they give Kuvira an outfit of Asami’s that is…. Like I can’t put it into words. I’ve never seen asami wear it and that is a shame. The word that comes to mind is “Dapper”. Like is we saw Asami wearing it when they first introduced her character literally everyone would have predicted Cannon Korrasami and immeadiately said “yup Asami’s gay straight women don’t dress like that”. Slacks, a collared long sleeve shirt, with a grey vest over top. Just like, amazing. I am so disappointed we never saw Asami wear this. Someone point me to a fanart of Asami in this outfit that canonically belongs to her please.

Guan arrives and Kuvira tries to talk to him, which goes about as well as you’d expect. So she tries to appeal directly to his troops and urges them to surrender, and they all say in unison “Hail Commander Guan!”. So Kuvira decides to challenge Guan and beats the crap out of him in a punch that looks like something directly out of a WWII propaganda poster or something.

Kuvira is literally about to kill him by bending the metal collar around his neck when suddenly Asami electrocutes her with some device she had hidden in the belt she gave Kuvira.

Once Mako and Bolin drag Kuvira away, Korra attempts to reason with Guan and tells him she won’t let him interfere with the election. Guan then reveals he has no intention of interfering- he plans on running in the election! He immediately turns in all the necessary paperwork to be on the ballot. He informs the Krew that soon, all the upcoming elections will have Earth Empire representatives running and once they have power in every territory, no one will question the Earth Empire's right to rule.

They reconvene back on the airship, where Kuvira is detained in the platinum box. They explain to Kuvira that she was wrong to provoke him, but right that he is an excellent strategist. Mako then tells Wu that he should just call off the election. Wu replies “Mako, you know I love you, but I’m trying to encourage democracy. I can’t just go around canceling elections because I don’t like one of the candidates. We need to see how this plays out”

…

Yes. “Mako, you know I love you”

…

We’ll discuss that at length in a bit.

They decide the best path forward is to find a new candidate who is popular enough to beat Guan. Korra excitedly suggests Toph. Which, like, wouldn’t have been the first person to come to mind for me, but I guess she’s the only person they know who is originally from Goaling? But everyone seems on board, except presumably Toph because she doesn't like to get involved in worldly affairs… So Korra announces they will just have to convince her!!

We then cut to Guan's encampment, where he is discussing Kuvira’s actions with a Doctor Sheng, observing that Kuvira just isn’t the same, and that the Avatar has corrupted her mind. The doctor suggests they “recalibrate” Kuvira’s mind and leads him into a structure where she shows him their latest “recruits'. We then see Goaling citizens tied up in chairs with devices on their heads. They are being brainwashed to vote for Guan! Yikes!

Mako and Wu Scenes

The Sauna scene

The meeting that took place in the sauna was at the behest of Wu. He said he was very stressed out so he couldn’t miss his steam bath. I know there are lots of jokes about Wu being high maintenance because he needs his spa days or whatever, but he is in a highly stressful situation right now and we know that self care is essential to maintain one’s mental health and in order to perform one’s job well. I think this was an interesting way to weave together his seemingly superficial hobbies with his new maturity and responsibility. I really loved this scene for that (though seeing all the hot people in sauna-wear is a bonus).

Also there is a recurring thing where Mako is just offering the worst advice to Korra. He wants the United Republic, a completely separate Nation from the Earth Kingdom, to just.. March into another country and ‘enforce’ their democratic process??? Like…. If you know anything about world history and current events we know that is awful and wouldn’t be received well and would be a recipe for political instability and long term conflict. Thank goodness everyone is like Mako no. I’m pointing this out because, as much as we think of Wu as being immature, irresponsible, whatever, the reality is that he has a level head while Mako is actually giving the irresponsible solutions here. It’s a really interesting evolution from the infamous Wu meltdown scene where Mako was the voice of reason, but here things have reversed.

Also, I want to point out the moment where Wu backs down after he adds his grievance to the list everyone is giving (She ruined my coordination!), it’s kind of played for laughs but like… Wu has a totally valid reason to be upset on par with everyone else, considering Kuvira had him drugged and kidnapped…. Why wouldn’t he have said that? Well, the simple and obvious answer is- the writers wanted to make a “Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking” joke. But since us fans like to give depths to the characters that they deserve, maybe Wu is genuinely traumatized and just doesn’t want to bring it up. And maybe everyone knows he’s traumatized and doesn't want to bring it up, because no one else is like “Wu, did you forget she had you drugged and kidnapped???” They just give him a look and he’s like “LOL oops sorry should have said my thing first!!” maybe Team Avatar understands that it was a really scary moment for him and they just let him shield himself with humor.

I know it isn’t isn’t exactly a strong Wuko moment, but the bitchy look that Moko, Bolin, Wu and Pabu give to Kuvira in the airship breathed life into me for some reason. I’m loving how they look like a group of mean girls who were just badmouthing Kuvira before she walked in. I think they were having a nice bonding moment before this.

Mako, you know I love you

Ok. So after Mako casually mentions just calling off the election, Wu flat out says “I love you” to Mako. This is a line us Wuko shippers just DIE for. The full line is as follows:

Mako: I say you call off the vote, at least for now. Make it impossible for Guan to win

Wu: Mako, you know I love you, but I’m trying to encourage democracy. I can’t just go around cancelling elections because I don’t like one of the candidates. We need to let this play out.

So. Like, what the heck are we supposed to make of this?

I’m not going to dig too deep and force my own interpretations and headcanons onto you. This I love you could mean a number of different things. I just want to pose some rhetorical questions about it and the context to give us all some things to think about.

Is Wu flirting? Does Mako actually know that Wu loves him? Is this an extension of Wu’s many other instances of flirting with complimenting Mako (on par with ‘my big tough guy” while staring at his ass)? Has Wu said “I love you” to Mako before? How many times has Wu said “Mako I love you” before? Is this evidence of them actually being in a romantic relationship during this comic? Or is it evidence of romantic tension building? Is Mako just totally oblivious to the fact that Wu said I love you? Or did he hear it and his brain blue-screened from the shock of being blatantly told I love you? Has Wu just gotten fed up that Mako seems oblivious to all his previous flirtations and he just decided to up the ante? Does Mako love Wu back?!

Lots of questions. Lots of interpretations. But (as far as I remember) Mako has only said I love you to two people- his brother and Korra (I don’t think he said I love you to Asami but I could be wrong). And if you’ve read this you know that Mako’s relationship with Wu is not brotherly. We’ve never heard “I love you” from Wu toward anyone else that I can recall so I don’t think he makes a habit of throwing the phrase around lightly. Also, worth noting: Literally no one reacts to the casual “I love you”. Everyone just goes on with the conversation at hand. The next frame that we see of Wu and Mako’s faces together, Mako is SMILING at Wu.

So like, he’s clearly not uncomfortable with being told that Wu loves him. And no one else is uncomfortable with it either. So what gives? Are they together? Are they flirting? Is everyone else just like “yup Wu said I love you Mako nothing out of the ordinary here because it’s painfully obvious Wu is into Mako, let's move on, nothing to see here”?

Wu and Korra

One thing I LOVE about these comics is the friendship between Korra and Wu. During the series, Korra tolerated Wu, warming up to him a bit at the very end when he told her his plan to abdicate. But through these comics there seems to be a comfortable familiarity between them. A bit of teasing, loads of moral support, and not a hint of her (or anyone) being super annoyed by him. He also doesn’t hit on her or anyone else except Mako, which is a very refreshing character growth because it was very tiresome to watch him objectify women in the animated series.

Korra and Wu spend a good amount of time together as she accompanies him to Gaoling’s city hall. They seem very comfortable with each other, comfortable enough that the writers included a fart joke.

Korra reassures Wu when he expresses worry about the election being pointless, she steps forward somewhat protectively when Guan shows up- the entire scene with Guan, Korra is standing between him and Wu.

Basically I bring this up because I genuinely love the idea that Korra and Wu are close and friendly, that they have moved on from his cringy behavior from the series (I like to think he apologized to both her and Asami?)

What this means for Wuko

If you are writing fic or just coming up with headcanon, there are two ways to look at the scenes. Either they are in a relationship, or they aren’t. You could easily just say they are in a relationship and are being quiet about it, because they aren’t ready to be fully public, or maybe because they are still figuring things out, or they are waiting for Wu to abdicate and move back to Republic City, etc. “You know I love you” is such an easy piece of canon content to make this your headcanon.

Likewise, one could say they are Not Together right now. Pre-relationship, if you will. Maybe they’ve danced around the idea, discussed feelings without actually getting together. Or maybe they are still clueless that there is a potential for a relationship. Wu might be putting out feelers to see how Mako responds to his flirtations. Mako might be wondering if he’s misinterpreting Wu’s affectionate touches and words. Lots of romantic tension, pining, each wondering if the other one has any feelings.

I also love the idea that Wu and Korra are friends and have discussed or will discuss Mako and Wu’s feelings for him.

So, in summary, Wu loves Mako. It’s canon. It’s right there in black and white. Make of it what you will!

Next post I will discuss Wuko in the first half of RotE Book 2. Wu goes on a life-changing field trip with Korra to meet Toph and confront a swamp-vision of his Late Great Aunt, while Mako gets captured and brainwashed by Guan. Wu and Mako are not together during these scenes but there will be lots of wonderful Wu backstory along with plenty of angst potential from the brainwashing storyline.

I was going to write more Dragon Ball headcannons, but I keep on seeing hate videos on the new PJO cast and I had to say something. I know that me ranting on tumblr won’t stop people from hating on Leah but I can’t help myself. So here I am defending her again.

Some in the fandom are just so mad about Leah being casted as Annabeth, and it makes my blood boil so much, because like… what did she even do besides not fit the exact description of what you want from Annabeth in the series? She was casted because the casting directors, and Rick Riordan himself, thought that she had the characteristics of Annabeth and would bring what they needed to the show. She already has an acting career, she’s clearly got some experience, but some of you won’t even see what she has to bring to the table. It’s not right, and I don’t care if you think that we have the right to be so mad about this, because we don’t.

I saw a video, where somebody said that Rick wouldn’t be where he is without the fandom. But have you ever stopped to think about the fact that, without Rick’s books, the fandom wouldn’t even exist? Because some of us are so entitled to our opinions and think that it’s okay to rage about the cast just because they don’t have the same skin color as they did in the book, and it’s beyond not okay. I literally could care less about how they look, as long as I get Annabeth calling Perssasy Seadweed Brain and Grover Goat Boy. As long as Leah acts like Annabeth, as long as Aryan acts like Grover, as long as Walker acts like Percy, I’m okay with it. In fact, I’m excited about it.

Leah has done nothing to this fandom. She merely showed up and was immediately shunned. All because she doesn’t look like Annabeth does in the books? You can stick to the fanart and not watch the show, but just remember, this same exact fandom watched the movies, disowned them because they were so bad, but didn’t get as upset about Alexandra Daddario being brunette because she was white. I know I said this in my last post about this, but I don’t care. I really don’t, and frankly, neither should any of you. If Leah gives us a good performance, I think she’ll do amazing as Annabeth. So just leave her alone and maybe watch the show before getting so upset about a POC girl being our female lead.

Earenis (Tolkien, technically complete): what once started as a not really serious persiflage of Mary Sues became much more serious very quickly. Technically complete, because the German text is complete (except for a few chapters in the third part), but I have to finish translating it. Earenis is half elf, half orc and the chosen one to stop a new enemy, a servant of Sauron (as I said, she should have been a Mary Sue, lol). However, thing don’t turn out quite as expected. Plus dragons. Always put dragons in it.

Fae barad - Foreign soul (Tolkien, complete): Legolas lands in modern day London and needs to find a way back in his time

Elrond’s diaries (Tolkien, ongoing, open end), simply as the title says. Currently in a state of reworking, I post as I go, won’t have a definite end

The right hand of death (The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivlion, technically complete): life and work of Lucien Lachance and how he started as a street urching and ended as one of the Dark Brotherhood’s most talented assassins; technically complete because the German text is long finished, I just have to continue translating it. If I may say so I still think this is my best text

Roots (Naruto, complete): founding of Konoha with focus on Hashirama’s and Madara’s relationship (because HashiMada is canon, you can’t convince me otherwise) and the problems they have to face in realization of their shared dream. Not all things go as smoothly as they wish for.

Adamantine (Naruto, finished): The AU, in which the Uzumaki women solve every problem Konoha ever had, simply because Uzumaki supremacy. Kabuto summons Mito and Kushina with Edo Tensei, but Mito breaks out of his control and together with Kushina take on the Juubi. The war is won, Madara never goes full on crazy and my OT3 HashiMadaMito finally gets some time together. Zetsu gets yeeted into the abyss where he belongs.

Krigsgaldr (Naruto, finished): the AU where cute little murder bean Izuna is allowed to live. Only three years after they got separated Hashirama and Madara meet again and plan to end the war. Because you just can't separate them! Heavily influenced by the aesthetics of Heilung (hence the title, which translates to war chant in Old Norse). Bonus for queer teenagers and nonbinary Izuna (Izuna, the character who’s completely made of anger and the rest is awesome projection surface, because Kishimoto tells us literally nothing about him). First part of my Butterfly Verse.

Butterfly Effect (Naruto, finished): Once Tobirama spared Izuna's life. Now it's Izuna's time to save Tobirama. As in the Kinkaku force gets their asses kicked by ferral Izuna. Part of the Butterfly Verse.

Until Eternity (Naruto, finished): Ghost AU, where Naruto ends up with the ghost of Madara (spice it up with Kurama), Sasuke with the ghost of Hashirama and Sakura with the ghost of Mito. Edo Tensei Tobirama is in there as well for some obscure reason because I write this.

Underneath the Silence (Naruto, ongoing): TobiMina timetravel fix-it, where Tobirama escapes the Kinkaku Force, but lands in modern day Konoha where Minato is currently Hokage. Nearly everyone he knows is dead and he struggles to find his place in this new world. And then Kyubi attacks, hupsi 😇

水の音 (mizu no oto): Sound of Water (Naruto, finished): Transmasc Tobirama invents transition and ends the war with it.

Unpublished stuff I’m currently working on

War in Eregion (Tolkien), this is probably not the final title. Technically the third part of my Angbang series, but can be read separately. It’s about Elrond trying to establish his spot in the politics of Lindon, Gil-galad trying his best as (not so) new king and Sauron worming his way into his enemies’ ranks

The Bliss of Valinor (Tolkien): second Angbang text about Mairon further establishing himself as new Lieutnant of Angband and spy for Melkor in Valinor

Ghost of Uchiha (Naruto), modern AU, Madara has a habbit of adopting little lost Uchiha kids (as in Obito, Itachi and Sasuke) and accidentially starts a collection (will be a bit more serious, than this description sounds, lol), OT3 HashiMadaMito, I’m throwing all my queer headcanons for them in this. Also cockatiels. Just because. And nobody can stop me from writing my own tiels into this!

Mirrors: The AU where Tsunade has to learn that her Grandpa maybe was not the person who she thinks he was. Aka suddenly she has to deal with a Sharingan. (Aka that's what's happening when I bullshit around)

Neon Dream: Cyberpunk AU of Team Minato, imagine a meshup between Cyberpunk 2077 and Horizon

Akatsuki!Minato: He defects from Konoha together with Kushina and his team and Akatuski happens. Just in a slightly different way.

Stuff I haven’t started yet but have (vague) ideas for

What if Maedhros found Eluréd and Elurín, because more kidnapdoption is always good, but add even more drama and hurt and angst. Will turn out a bit more bittersweet than Childhood memories. Will be multi chaptered and is in fact already fully plotted (wow, what’s wrong with me o.0)

Maedhros lives and goes with Elros to Númenor. The Lords of Númenor think their King an inexperienced kid despite the fact that Elros is much older than most of them. Maedhros teaches them otherwise. Plus some cultural differences, because Elros is, after all, raised as Noldo. Problably an oneshot (but who knows).

A long oneshot or a short longfic about Cicero and how he became the jester of the Dark Brotherhood and Keeper of the Night Mother. (You’re just a mean cutthroat if you betray his trust in his Listener and kill him! 😤) Based on his diaries.

A spin off to The right hand of death with the backstory of Vicente Valtieri and how he becase a vampire and ended up with the Dark Brotherhood. Definitely multi chaptered

Born to Live, second part of Roots, currently in a state of ploting, Mito will be focus character.

Implementing my hc, that Tobirama is Kakashi’s grandpa, into my Butterfly Verse, but I need a plot D: Why do I need a plot! T.T

*contains talk about chapter 139, so do not read if you do not want to be spoiled. Heavily anti er*mika. Also, I'll be using Aaron/Ellen, just in case*

Hi Hi !! fellow Mikasa and Rivamika fans, and anyone else who stumbles across this who was gravely disappointed in Mikasa's ending. I've been somewhat of a lurker, and I've enjoyed seeing the fanart, reading the fics, and all the theories and analyses, so thank you to everyone who has shared their content. I don't usually share my thoughts so publicly ('cause I'm always nervous I won't communicate all my emotions properly), but I have this idea and I'd love to share it, and might as well take the opportunity to criticize 139.

My Thoughts On Mikasa's Ending and Her Scarf

After chapter 139, I was thinking about Mikasa's scarf and whether I wanted to continue imagining her in it anymore, e.g. when reading fics or fucking fantasizing lmao. See, the scarf used to be her indicator; it was very much part of her person. And, in the beginning, it represented warmth and comfort. After the traumatic experience of seeing her parents brutally murdered, we can't deny that, in the beginning, that's exactly what Aaron represented for her (warmth, safety, security, and comfort). But, overtime, we've seen how the scarf has come to represent Mikasa's over attachment to Aaron.

Over the series, we see Aaron Yoghurt and Mikasa grow apart, and the infamous line: "I've always hated you, Mikasa" is the final nail in the coffin. In this arc, we see Mikasa's crafted image of Aaron begin to crumble ('cause he's a fucking mass murderer now), and we finally see her take off that scarf. Thus, separating herself from Aaron. And when she finally put it back on to behead Aaron, I had hoped it was one final 'hurrah!'; one last moment to tie to the scarf before burying it. And how fitting would that have been for the very thing that once tied them together to free them both?

But, no. As we all witnessed in the last chapter, the scarf is still wrapped around Mikasa even three years later. We have Ellen Dove's pathetic lines: "Even after I die... I want to be at the front of her mind for a while! Ten years, at least!!!", paired with the final lines: "Thank you for wrapping this scarf around me Ellen."

Now, what the hell does that say to a reader? I get everyone's defensiveness about how it's okay for Mikasa to grieve. But the main issue is Yams' storytelling and how that portrays and reduces Mikasa as a character.

There was this blatant contrast of every single person moving on, doing something with their lives. Then, there is Mikasa, crying at the graveyard of a dead mass murderer. The scarf clings onto her like shackles, not allowing her to be free and live life. Not to mention the fact that in the same chapter, Mikasa was shown to have 'freed' Ymir from her abusive relationship, only to revert to the same behaviour a few panels later.

I'm not gonna go much deeper into it, but we all were able to draw parallels between Ymir-Fritz and Ere*ika, right? It's disturbing, it's alarming, and so very harmful that Yams wasn't even careful with word choice in displaying an abusive relationship. Instead, he painted it in a good light. So, you can see how in her final goodbye just how badly this has framed Mikasa's character. Reducing her to a mourning widow of, once again, a mass murderer.

SO, HERE'S MY IDEA: A PROJECT/MOVEMENT/PROTEST

We, as a collective fandom (rivamikas and anyone who loves Mikasa and was hurt/offended/disgusted by her ending), could stop putting Mikasa in a scarf NOW. As we've all said, that crusty, rusty, musty, dusty, germ-infested, disease-bringing shit needs to die and stay dead. It's time we all say goodbye to it.

A movement of fanarts/fics/any other content of Mikasa burning the scarf, burying it, or simply showing her without the scarf and any other creative thing your mind comes up with. THIS IS A PROTEST of what that thing now represents. Being shackled to a pathetic mass murderer, clinging to a toxic love, living in the past, living for a man and not yourself, and not moving on or being happy. I think it could kind of be a way to allow ourselves and Mikasa to move on from chapter 139; a kind of CATHARSIS. We still stand with Mikasa and everything that is good about her, and will not allow that to be her ending.

And, sure, include Levi (preferably, holding her neck as he kisses the living daylights out of her, kissing her bare neck, and perhaps even a little conversation about the scarf). BUT, REMEMBER, THIS IS MAINLY FOR MIKASA, AND ALL THE WOMEN SHE REPRESENTS.

If you feel as passionately about this as I do, then include the hashtag #BuryTheScarfMikasa or #BurnTheScarfMikasa to all your future posts of Mikasa without her scarf. (I'd like to think 'Bury' is more gentle, while 'Burn' indicates rage lol)

(also, to note: I'm looking at post war and cottage core fanarts and a lot of you guys are already doing this! Guess I might be late to the party. If so, then I'd like to ask any of the artists and anyone in general: how much were you considering Mikasa's scarf when drawing/writing her? And what will you do now after reading 139 and this? I'd love to hear your thoughts. Also I'd also like to ask that you please reblog this to spread the word. Thank you for reading :)

Hey, y'all, Dad here. I know a lot of people are genuinely unhappy about Unus Annus leaving us tomorrow -- and it's a completely justified and valid way to feel, and you have my every sympathy. That being said, I wanted to take this time to write out some words of encouragement in hopes that someone might benefit from them. It's all written from a place of care and concern, and I'm gonna try and be as mindful as possible with what I say.

Consider this my eulogy.

We knew this was coming. I know it's easier said than done to let things we enjoy go, but we were given time to prepare. And that's not to condemn anyone who didn't take out the time to -- even when we know a relative is on their way out, whether due to an irreversible disease or just old age, the looming dread from the thought of their last moments with us isn't the same as the sometimes-piercing sadness of them actually being gone. Everything is finite: one day, YouTube itself will come to an end, as will everything else we enjoy and prioritize and invest emotions into. And, as painful it is to hear, there's even gonna be a day when your favorite creators will stop posting -- whether or not by conscious choice, whether or not with an announcement in advance.

Unus Annus is just a channel. Ethan and Mark are thankfully alive and kicking, and aren't gonna leave YouTube after they delete Unus Annus. Mark still has Markiplier, Ethan still has CrankGameplays, and they're still gonna collaborate and play games and meet up in-person in videos together. This is an event that's coming to an end, not people.

You don't have to say goodbye to fictional characters. There are so many characters that have canonically passed away that people still hold onto, and they keep their legacy going via fanfics, fanart, and the like. Unus and Annus being canonically gone doesn't mean we legally have to stop talking about them, drawing/writing about them, discussing their characters through headcanons, etc. Hell, in the context of Mark's pocket dimension, we don't even have to view them as fully gone. One of the most famous characters to be associated with Mark was killed twice in-Universe, but Darkiplier's still going strong, and Mark quite literally demonstrated that we, Y/N, are the reason for that.

The boys might even talk about Unus Annus in later videos on their own channel. I don't expect Mark to directly mention it, being the cryptid he is(I keep thinking back to the masks on his shelf he won't acknowledge), but that's neither here nor there. Again, they're not legally barred from talking about something that used to be but is no more. These videos will exist in memories now -- and that can be upsetting, especially for people like me who have a hard time remembering things -- but we unfortunately can't immortalize every good thing that happens to us. It's like graduating from school after a really good last year, or moving away from a town where you made a lot of meaningful friendships: you'll still be able to reminisce with friends, but just because you can't go back and experience the memory 1-to-1 again doesn't mean that it never mattered.

You can think of it as a happy ending. "Don't cry because it's over; smile because it happened", as the saying goes, and because you were there to watch it happen. Unus Annus was but a moment of beautiful, hilarious, Dadaist chaos that lived through the majority of a truly Hellish year, but just because it's ending doesn't mean it didn't help a good lot of us cope with some pretty pertinent wide-scale traumatic events. It was a beacon, a firework that sailed high in the sky and eventually had to fizzle out, just as fireworks do. But it was still beautiful.

Thank you, Ethan. Thank you, Mark. Thank you, Amy. I can't speak for everyone who watched the series, but as someone who had to give up a lot of big plans right when lockdown hit -- as someone who regularly struggles with keeping emotionally stable and most of whose happy moments have to be planned and actively implemented -- as someone who does indeed have the mantra of memento mori looming over his head, always trying to find things to tether his mind in an environment where it can often feel impossible to... you helped me breathe better this year.

I'll be laying a bouquet of gratitude -- eustomas, trolliuses, pink roses -- on your grave. 💟

You’re Good To Me- (Mature/4371/No Archive Warnings Apply/Unfinished); Aiden crawls from her grave and gets help from an unexpected source. Lots of healing and re-learning how to witcher again.

Fanart

Mama Cats- (Gen/No Archive Warnings Apply); A gift of fanart for Heronfem based on the newest chapter of A Beginners Guide to Exploiting the Kaedweni Tax Code For Fun and Profit. I can't recommend that fic more —it contains lots of Laiden, hurt/comfort, found family, banter, healthy communication, and healing. Read it because it's awesome.

Lady Laiden- (Gen/No Archive Warnings Apply); I drew my Fem!Aiden and Fem!Lambert as I've written them in my fics. Because I am a useless, useless gay bitch, Aiden has a dark curly mullet, a single hoop earring, green eyes, and a jawline carved from marble while Lambert has Merida-hair with lots of freckles and a distinguished nose.

Laiden Gets Laid (Again and Again)

Sweeter Than Pride- (Explicit/2524/No Archive Warnings Apply); Aiden is so fucking proud of her baby wolf... and all she wants to do is take her completely apart, as low as it makes her feel sometimes.

Collars Of Many Kinds- (Explicit/1830/No Archive Warnings Apply); Aiden hates Lambert's armor, specifically the ugly, flaking, fucking hideous collar. Her baby wolf deserves better than that, and she's damn well gonna get it.

Curiosity Killed The Cat- (Explicit/5142/No Archive Warnings Apply); Just a few months after the Ogre contract, Lambert is fed up to the ears with Aiden's brand of Bullshit, and now she has to do laundry on top of it. A little stress-relief is more than in order. Aiden desperately wants to learn more about the angry Wolf, and in trying to do so, stumbles headfirst into something she shouldn't have seen.

2022 Witcher Summer Camp

With Her Own Two Hands- (Teen/2678/No Archive Warnings Apply); On the Path, there’s little room for comfort, softness, and safety, a rule that holds truer than most, even when Lambert needs those things the most. After they get turned away at their usual inn for Lambert’s heat, Aiden spends the next year making sure her baby wolf will never have to spend another heat in a damp, cold, dirty cave again. Flint And Steel- (Teen/2848/No Archive Warnings Apply); Jaskier has a front-row seat to watch the two people he loves most destroy each other, and as much as he hates it, he can’t leave Ciri alone when Geralt and Yennefer are so destructive. The Art Of Threats- (Explicit/3433/No Archive Warnings Apply); Ivo sweating? Disgusting, horrible, filthy, awful, terrible, undignified, icky. He should kill Arnaghad for making them endure the cold just to throw them into the heat of summer, hairy as their school's namesake and completely unprepared. However...... Junod sweating? Digesting Chapter 138

Don't get me wrong, there were moments in chapter 138 that fucked me up (cough Connie and Jean cough), and I love the art. Eren and Armin’s fight and the final panel with Mikasa, which I want to dig into in a bit, are both especially powerful drawings. Overall, though, I feel much calmer after reading this chapter than I thought I would. I’ve been trying to figure out why that is, and one reason is probably that I expected some of it. The rumbling was going to continue, the explosion wouldn’t have killed Eren, and he was probably going to die in either this chapter or the next one.

But I also think that part of why I feel so normal is because I’m not thrilled about this chapter. Which is rare for me. I won’t say that I’ve never been peeved about a chapter, since I definitely have been and I just can’t remember the specifics, but it’s been a while. 138 is confusing, it’s disgruntling, and it didn’t pack as much of a punch as AoT usually does. I don’t hate it, but I’m also not here for it, and there are a couple specific moments that make me feel that way.

First, the titanization.

Like I said, Jean and Connie’s last moments cracked my heart, but even though that last panel of them standing together, watching Falco fly away, was beautiful and painful, I’m so confused about how the titanization happened. The chapter heavily implies that the gas which infects the characters comes from the Hallucigenia-worm-neck-thing.

Okay, bet. I can accept that the spine worm primed the Eldians for titanization. What confuses me, though, is that it’s not clear that the worm triggers the titanization. If anything, it looks like Falco did, which I don’t understand.

As Falco flies away with Mikasa and Levi on his back, leaving the other characters behind to become titans, Falco screams. After he screams, the Eldians turn into titans. It’s not clear what else could trigger the transformation. There’s no panel of, say, Eren screaming, and from past chapters, titanization is trigged by a scream, not because of exposure to gas or spinal fluid alone.

So, the chapter looks like it implies that... Falco screams?

Maybe that’s not what’s going on, but that’s what it looks like, so the titanization makes no sense to me. If Falco screamed The Scream, why? Screaming turns the people that he wants to protect and free, e.g. Gabi and his family, into titans devoid of autonomy. If Falco is the trigger, that also means the titanization was preventable, which is incredibly frustrating given that so many important characters were transformed.

Maybe someone could say this is a highly dramatized scream of anguish, and that the gas was strong enough to turn the Eldians through exposure alone. Maybe the worm is just insanely powerful. But that sounds like a cop-out, so this is a really confusing, frustrating scene.

The confusion about the Hallucigenia and its role in titanization is part of a bigger problem with this final arc and this chapter: Ymir and the lore.

The more I see of the Hallucigenia and Ymir, especially after the weird origin story last chapter, the less sense everything makes. I have a lot to say about Eren’s death, and I’ll get into it more some other time, but for now, I want to focus on Ymir’s reaction to it.

Putting aside how morbidly funny I think her presence is, why is she smiling? Ymir has either helped or controlled Eren, I’m still not completely sure which, for a long time at this point. She’s invested in him. His death seems like it would be a massive loss for her own objectives, but when Eren fails, Ymir just... watches.

Her smile definitely makes me think that there’s much more going on here than she’s letting on, but I also can’t figure out what the hell that “more” is. At this point, watching her react this way, I don’t understand what she wants or her dynamic with Eren. Last chapter’s lore confused me, too, so this chapter’s weirdness exacerbated my frustration with not knowing what’s going on.

Why this panel from last chapter confuses me is a whole other text post, and I don’t want to go off on a tangent, but basically, if she made the titans/ Hallucigenia to have an undying body, and if she meant to escape to a free world, whether that’s the paths or something else, she didn’t succeed. It’s also not clear to me whether she completely controls the thing in Eren’s neck, or if she only made it.

Ymir and the founding titan’s powers are massive components of the rumbling and Eren’s behavior. They also don’t make sense. After last chapter’s lore threw me off, I hoped that 138 and 139 might shed some more light on the titans’ origins and Ymir. After reading 138, I’m more confused, and I’m started to give up on trying to wrap my head around any of it. It’s still intriguing, but I’m increasingly frustrated, and it makes the series’ ending feel rushed.

Beyond Ymir, I’m not into the ending in general. And yeah, it’s because of That Final Panel.

Like I said at the beginning of this post, I LOVE the imagery. It’s so dramatic and macabre, and I’m excited about what fanart it might inspire. I don’t also love it thematically.

I’ve seen a lot of really vitriolic reactions to it, especially from people who dislike EreMika. For me, I’m just bummed about it means for Mikasa’s character.

One of, if not her greatest, defining traits for YEARS has been her love for Eren. Especially after Eren’s rampage in Liberio, it became more and more clear that her development would have to mean letting go of that devotion, or at least not let it keep her from stopping his plans.

Mikasa rejecting the dream and killing Eren fulfills that development, but the kiss undermines it.

The kiss is closure. A goodbye. It is also still a kiss on the lips, which, at least for me and in the culture I grew up in, reads as romantic. Since Eren is dead, it’s also unreciprocated. The scene is both as Mikasa letting go of Eren and perpetuating the same (recently toxic) devotion she’s had for the whole series.

I’m not saying that I don’t think she should have closure. It makes sense that, after such an intense relationship, her goodbye is going to be tender. Nevertheless, I don’t think that the kiss is the form that closure had to take. Even if it took the form of a kiss, I don’t think that it needed to be on the lips. It’s like Yams can’t decide whether he really wants Mikasa to lose her love interest or not. Or, by extension, to not be defined by Eren.

Over the years, I’ve gotten exasperated with how much Yams writes Mikasa focusing on Eren. This end doesn’t read like she breaks free the way she needs to. Saying “see you later” instead of “goodbye” right before she kills Eren also reflects her attachment, although the dream/vision/??? is a WHOLE different rabbit hole and that line is up for a shit ton of interpretation.

As you can see from the watermarked panels, I’m not using an official English translation, so maybe the official English pages might clarify some things when they come out. I doubt it, though, since my frustrations don’t hinge on interpreting slight differences in wording. It’s also true that this is a pretty raw reaction, so my opinions might still develop, and I might figure out some of the lore and confusing panels that I’m stumped on.

Nevertheless, this is how I feel right now, and based on what I’ve seen, I’m not the only one. If you liked the chapter, you do you. This is just my opinion. Everyone values and focuses on different elements of a story. Even though I just slammed the chapter for about 1400 words, I also liked some parts of it.

In the end, it still doesn’t bode well for the manga’s ending. An author doesn’t have to explain every mystery and ambiguity for me to like a story. Grey areas and space for interpretation actually make a series stronger, in my opinion, but only to a point. Right now, there’s just too much that seems out of reach. I don’t blame Yams for wanting to be done with the manga after, as of about a week and a half from now, 11 years. At the same time, when I read this chapter, it felt like it was written by someone who was ready for it to be over, and not in a good way. I’ll wait and see how everything ends, but so far, I think the ending is... kind of underwhelming, unfortunately.
